HOW ON EARTH DO THEY DO THIS??? After you've been to Cook Out, you'll know how much the big fast food chains spend on advertising. Because this place is very quietly serving up above-average fast food throughout the south. Yes, there's a potential caloric minefield here, but you can get out of here for five bucks without doing TOO much damage...or with minimizing the damage. This will never be confused for health food, but if you avoid the fried stuff it's not TOO bad in a pinch. The "Tray" is a sandwich and two sides. I've tried the hushpuppies (too greasy but tasty), the onion rings, and slaw. Frankly, I would double up on the slaw because it's that tasty. There are also weird things like a quesadilla and something they call a chicken wrap (as a side!) that I haven't tried because from what I've seen it is a chicken nugget and some iceberg lettuce in a small tortilla and not too appetizing. And for some strange reason, corn dogs. As a side. Go figure. This tray will run you a big $4.99, and includes a drink. You can't afford NOT to try it. Oh, and for another buck you can upgrade to a "fancy shake". There are like 45 flavors listed and I wouldn't even TRY to add one of these because a burger or chicken sandwich and two slaws puts me into a food coma without it. The regular burger is a pretty hefty piece of beef with the actual texture of a burger. I've had worse burgers at sports bars. Onion rings as a side are a sane portion of 5-6 rings, which is PLENTY, and they are real onion rings, not chopped/formed God-knows-what. The slaw is cold and just the right balance of sweetness and vinegar. Grilled chicken in the sandwich is kind of small and thin, so a bit dried out, but it is a bit of protein in a pinch. The burger is better, and you can get it however you want it (ketchup, pickle, grilled onions is MY way). They also have a chopped pork BBQ sandwich that I haven't tried. There was no signage that the restaurant was out of coins. My order came to $10.93. I paid with a $20 bill and the cashier gave me $9 back while announcing without an apology "I don't have $0.07." When I inquired as to why she kept my change her response was "What's the big deal? It's only $0.07." I was very disappointed that some manager put a young black girl at the drive-up window in charge of stealing from customers. That's what stealing is, taking money from someone without their permission. I tried to educate her on interest and how $0.07 from every customer would add up to a substantial amount of money but she closed the window, turned away from me and proceeded to talk about me to the workers in the restaurant. I know because they each glared at me through the glass. I decided that this type of ignorance was not ready for enlightenment today and left with my milkshakes which were a treat for my family. I will not return to this restaurant and you should think twice. If tips are needed then out out a jar like any other respectable establishment. read more

No food, No help, No refund from the manager here who was working on the night of 7/24/22. Our hush puppies melted through the styrofoam and were loose in the bag. My husband brought them back, which was so uncomfortable for us and we don't like to bring food back. The manager was really mean to my husband and to the cashier working. He refused to fix it or provide a refund. He said he would give him a refund but walked away and wouldn't come back. When my husband asked the cashier what the managers name was the cashier was scared to answer so he let it go. After an hour wait--the manager left us with no food and no refund. The lady taking my order was nice and I ordered what I always get, cheese burger with cheddar cheese ketchup and pickles and usually something from the creamery. The last few times I have gone they always seem to add mustard, and they did this time so I complained and they remade it, then I got my float and there was no foam and barely any carbonation (I used to work at a cook out and had to make floats and shakes all the time and I get floats often so I know how they're supposed to taste) I knew the co2 tank must have been going empty so I tried telling the lady that the soda was flat, another lady came out from the kitchen, took the cup and threw it in the trash can like she was agitated, quickly and sloppily made another one and stuck in front of my face and said "see there are bubbles, soda's not flat, ice cream makes it go flat."(It still looked like the last one but I didn't feel like arguing with her so I just left) and the way she was acting , for all I know she could have spit in the thing out of spite. read more

Cook Out is unfailingly there for me when I need it at 1 in the morning after a night of bowling. This particular location is nice because of the indoor seating, which means that, unlike a typical Cook Out, you don't have to struggle to eat your food outside as you battle the cold or the wind. Or both. The interior of this Cook Out is not too clean, but clean enough. Service ranges from poor to straight-up rude, and food comes out either quickly or after 35 minutes. There is no in between. I'm not going to say much more since the name Cook Out has made for itself speaks for itself. Even though everybody knows that it's terrible for your body and that you ought to hit the gym the next day, it's worth it because it's delicious and comforting. One thing we are definitely not short on in North Carolina is fast food chains selling burgers and fried chicken. With that being said, I love Cookout. And I was especially impressed with this one in particular. I am a very seasoned Cookout customer, having eaten it for many many years of my life. The best deal to get here without a doubt is their trays. One main menu item, two sides, and a drink all for about $6. If you're a burger person, their burgers here have a pretty good flavor. They can be messy sometimes, unless you're into that. They also have hot dogs, quesadillas, and more for your main menu item. My favorite side items are the chicken wraps and quasadillas. All the quesadillas come with meat (chicken or steak) and a really good sauce in the middle. But Vegetarians rejoice cuz you can get it without meat (I used to do this back when I was vegetarian). The fries are also seasoned with a special salt, which makes them an outstanding choice. First time at Cookout? Get a milkshake. GET. A MILKSHAKE. The milkshakes here are life changing. They have fruity and sugary flavors, but the best part is that you can mix any amount of flavors in any quantity. My personal favorite is the blueberry watermelon mix milkshake, but watermelon is only a summer seasonal item, so I can only get it once a year. This is one of the *cleanest* Cookouts I've ever been too. This is probably because it's new, but they still do a great job of maintaining the place. It was built in the new style of Cookouts that the company is pushing, with a new look and indoor seating. Down points are the long line at the drive thru, which can be grueling, especially at night with cars loaded with drunk people. Also, at the drive thru, they're really not that great at handling multiple orders, so sometimes it's a gamble if you're going to get the food you ordered or not. read more

I rarely want to sit the 10-15 mins it takes to go thru this locations drive thru. I ordered a cook out tray w hush puppies, chicken nuggets and a sweet tea... The sandwich was good. The nuggets were as well. The hush puppies tasted like they were cooked in fish oil. And the sweet tea tasted like the water had been run through a garden hose. I'm mostly upset about the sweet tea. Absolutely disgusting! Idk what kind of water filters they're using or if some of their brewing equipment is rusted out? Can't believe there aren't more 5 star reviews of this place. It's clean and service is quick. What else can you expect from them? This is probably the best bang for buck (and dare I mention "healthy" fast food?) money can buy if you're looking to indulge on burgers+fries+milkshakes and not break the bank. No mystery meat here, chicken is chicken and beef is beef. I believe this location only opened up in the last year or two. One of my cousins goes to the blue devil school down the road and we've always gone to the cookout on Hillsborough. But this new location also has seating inside which really amplifies the cookout experience in my opinion. I've yet to eat at a bad cookout and this one is no exception. Service is quick, people are nice, selection is plentiful. One AWESOME thing I've noticed at this place is that they really load up your coke/cheerwine floats with ice cream (or I've just been lucky). I've been to plenty of cookout locations where they just put a single scoop of ice cream in and then the coke/cheerwine and then top off with water/ice. I know this because whenever I freeze the float for later, there is always a sizable layer of ice that forms whereas I pretty much always end up with an entire cup of ice cream here. Who doesn't love cook out!? Every time I go, the drive-thru line is SO long but they move everyone along so fast that I never wait more than a few minutes. I have never gone inside this cook-out but the food is always tasty, served piping hot, and fast. Usually this cook out be on its game. This previous visit has me questioning coming back. My family and I went to this cook out because of convenient location. I ordered a chicken quesadilla with REGULAR double fries and a huge sweet tea. I made it to home to realize that I received Cajun fries, no problem I used to work in the fast food restaurant. I went back and they corrected my order. I then proceeded to order a milkshake. I ask the lady for a Oreo milkshake, "we don't have Oreo". Ok how about M&M " we don't have M&M". Mint chocolate chip "okay". She made the milkshake, I barely made it out the drive thru to notice something was wrong with my milkshake. I proceeded to open my lip to my milkshake and it was soupy. I turn around and ask for a refund for my milkshake. Im not sure if it was her first day but I believe you should give customers what you would eat, I'm pretty sure the lady don't want no soupy ice cream. This particular Cookout is slow, because of the long lines, but I think it's because it's a new location and the next closest Cookout is across town. They had a friendly staff, and the food tasted more fresh...I wonder if that says something about the other Cookouts in the area. But it was great as usual! read more

I had the Cheddar Style Burger with Onion Rings, a Shake and a side of styrofoam. Con: I can see why they say Cheddar "Style" in the name of this burger, because it's not real cheddar cheese. The burger should be named Nacho Cheese Burger. -The meat had a weird taste like it was on a propane grill. It has a very gas like taste. -Holy styrofoam batman. Talk about NOT environmentally friendly. Everything you buy is placed in a styrofoam container. The trash is filled to the rafters with styrofoam containers. Get trays like all the other fast food places or get biodegradable containers. Pro: What flavored shake do you want? They probably have it. The shakes are pretty incredible. -The onion rings are a little over cooked, but I like them crispy. -The service is pretty fast, but I guess that's what you should expect from a fast food restaurant. This has to be my favorite Cookout. I am willing to drive the 15 minutes to get there when I have tons of other options nearby. They do the classic Cookout food really well. My orders always come out correct and quick. This is one of the few that has an inside seating area which is very convenient. Adequate and totally identical to every other CookOut I have been to in two other states. Service was fast and friendly. Food is decent for fast food and the long list of milkshakes is impressive given the setting. I don't eat much fast food to begin with but CookOut is on the list. The only real ding I can come up with is the noise from the drive through. Cookout has good milkshakes and malts, with a surprising variety of flavors. And this store has a seating area. They're open late and were packed with college kids from Duke and UNC. The food is good if you're looking for burgers, shakes, etc. You could sort of classify it as fair food on demand. I used to eat here all the time until I got severe food poisoning from their chicken strips (I know it was that because of the type of food poisoning and what I had eaten in the last 24 hours). I had to have IVs etc and was in severe pain. Despite my love for their food, something went wrong with the sanitation or preparation. I've never been so sick in my life. We finally got a dine in cookout. Yay. However when we ordered the food the girl forgot to give us one of our drinks and then when the food came one of our orders was wrong. We ate it anyway. The pick nick style seats aren't child friendly for anyone below the age of 4. My 3 year old slid off the seat hitting his head on the wall behind him onto the floor. But wasn't hurt. Cook-Out is one of the true gems of NC, and ever since this location opened up, I have been making regular occurrences. The shakes are the best around. Where else can you mix as many flavours as you want? IMO, the Watermelon one is hands-down, the best. And the food is very filling when you have a craving for unhealthy but delicious food. I am still amazed how cheap it is at the same time. And there's not many chains that you can order a Big Double Burger tray with a side of a Chicken Quesadilla and a Bacon Wrap. I love that this is a sit-in. Though it can get busy on a late night, and the shakes don't come out the same time as the rest of your order, the staff is nothing short of professional, and very friendly. read more
