I don't even want to know how many chemical preservatives I ate in the dog on the right (Old Yallow)

The Dog House's website boasts that their philosophy is to serve their food "with fast and friendly service...come by any of our stores and see for yourself why The Dog House has the best hot dogs in town." I did. They don't. That is not to say they were bad. They were just decent. Average. And perhaps they are the best hot dogs in Durham. But that would be nothing to boast about. Things did not start off well when I was given disinterested, aloof service in place of the promised fast and friendly service. This set a negative tone, but I kept an open mind. Maybe the dogs would save the day. All the way: the slaw was good, but the chili was pretty bland. I upgraded one to the all beef wiener, which is usually a good decision, but it did not make much of a difference here. It is a lower grade of all beef to the point that their traditional pink dog, one of the tastier ones I have come across, was actually better. German Shepherd: sauerkraut and spicy mustard...it was good but not great. Old Yallow: this one is recommended by Our State Magazine. It is covered in liquid cheese product and bacon bits, and by bacon bits I mean the imitation bacon bits that have no bacon in them. My expectations were pretty low. But I confess that I did enjoy this hot dog. So maybe if you are in the area The Dog House is worth a try, but this will go down as another strike against Our State Magazine's List of top hot dog joints in North Carolina. They just don't belong on any such list.

I'm upset I didn't order two hotdogs! So good! Really nice gentleman working there too. Will definitely be back for more hotdogs!

The Ol' Yellow. Melted cheese, mustard, and bacon bits awesomeness.

This might be one of the easiest restaurants to spot. It's a great place to break your diet and comes complete with a drive-thru for this purpose. You can't argue with the prices here. I don't think you can break your pocketbook and go home hungry. In fact, I'm not entirely sure you can break your pocketbook here. While I prefer beef dogs to the pork dogs they serve here, the Ol' Yellow was fantastic and I wish I'd gotten a second one. The dogs don't have a snap to provide texture, but the bacon bits helped combat this significantly. The other dog I picked was a puppy dog, but being plain, the meat just didn't hold up on its own. Also, if you're not a fan of mustard, your menu choices are extremely limited. The apple turnovers are cheap and fantastic. They smell and taste like some treat you'd get at the NC State Fair.

This is just iconic. From the giant dog house to the pink, boiled hot dogs. It's nice for a change of pace. The chili and slaw aren't soaking wet so easier for stuffing in my mouth driving down the road. Cheese fries are just fries covered in a canned cheese sauce but it was loaded on for sure. It's a good place e when u want a fast dog especially if in Durham on Hillsborough Rd. It is what it is. Enjoy!

I was hoping I would not be disappointed. Downtown Durham on Parrish Street I do believe. I went there midday and there was a sparse lunch crowd already seated when I arrived. The warmly lit space presents nice aesthetic as you walk into the restaurant. A very chill and comfortable atmosphere. I love the bar and the mirrored wall nestled behind it. The spot is pretty laidback and very clean, but has a bit of a rustic nuance to it as well. I like that. The serving staff were extremely nice and helpful towards advising me in making my selection -- with me being a first-timer and all. I kept it simple...I chose the Classic Burger (pink) with pepper jack cheese, bacon marmalade, and as a side, I had to go with the Dirty Fries -- 'cause that's how I roll y'all. About the food: I have to say, the burger was staunchly built and crafted with artistry. Nice and tall with a seriously tasty bun encapsulating everything. Perfectly well-seasoned meat and the first bite was simply delightful. I noticed as I got towards the center of the meat, it was bit less juicy than the surrounding parts of the burger, but nevertheless still tasty. My Dirty Fries were delicious In the end; the experience as a whole was quite delightful and I would definitely like to go there again -- perhaps try a different burger to expand upon my experience with this place. Gotta try out That Bar y'all! I do recommend it for those who haven't had a chance to go by there to check it out.

There are five locations, 4 in Durham, and a very small location in Hillsborough - none have inside seating, though there is a very limited amount of outside seating in some locations. They offer six or seven specialty dogs, a sausage dog, just added chopped pork BBQ, Brunswick Stew, FFs, Baked Beans, and Fried Apple Turnovers, and they have just added an all beef wiener option - but with this very meaty chili (and they load it on), the screaming neon red Southern style wiener is best, imho. I love the dogs here, and we grabbed a couple on our way through Durham yesterday - as good as ever. Sure do wish they'd setup shop in Greensboro - the Chili Dog Desert of the Southeast.

Really, how can you mess up a hot dog? I ordered the bulldog which is a chili dog with a little bit of coleslaw sort of mixed in and if I hadn't been completely out of food, I would've thrown them out. Don't waste your money or time at this cute little stand. I was so excited, but it turned out to be a sad time. I also ordered fries and they give you a tremendous amount, but they are not seasoned at all and so even with ketchup, they are really bad. Coming from the Midwest, where brats and Chicago hot dogs are popular, I am sorry to say The Dog House offers something you'd scrape up off the dog run concrete after it rained.
