Decided to try this place on a Tuesday around 4-5pm for the Taco Tuesday deal. Heard it was good so decided to try it out, besides it was a $5 deal for 2 tacos with chips, queso, salsa, and a drink. It's a bar atmosphere and I'm sure it get packed and lit at night or on the weekends but it was dead at that time. So we walk in and try to order. Immediately, the lady behind the cash register is unwelcoming and had an attitude. We were hungry so we went ahead and ordered our tacos. With the deal, they only offer either beef or veggie tacos. So we went with beef. She rings us up and asks where we were sitting. I admit, I misheard her, because she did not speak loud enough. So I thought she was asking if we were eating there, I responded with "yes." And she raises her voice at me, basically yelling "WHERE ARE YOU SITTING?" Now mind you, there was no one else in the bar.. it was just her and another bartender and maybe 1 or 2 other customers sitting dispersed in the restaurant, so the restaurant was not loud at all. The music was not loud either. So there was no reason to explain why she had that type of attitude or had to raise her voice like that towards a customer. She's definitely the reason why this review is a 2. They need to change the type of service they have there. Secondly, she gave my friend and I different sized drinks when we paid for the same meal. One drink was smaller than the other, which made no sense whatsoever. Thirdly, the amount of time we wanted for the food was ridiculous. For the amount of business they had at that time, we waited for approximately 30 minutes for 4 tacos and some queso, salsa, and chips. The tacos were decent. The tortillas were flour and delicious but the meat was not seasoned enough and super oily and greasy. The grease was soaking the whole taco. The chips were not flavorful and also greasy. The queso had a thin film over it. But tasted okay. The salsa was extremely watery and had no taste. It was an unpleasant experience and will most likely not be returning. But at least, now we know. I'm sure the place is fun for bar hopping and drunk nights though. read more

I love cool beans! Me and my friends come here at lest once a week. Today there was a bartender training (which is fine) and i asked for a Bahama Momma and she didn't know what it was and said they don't have that shot there and I corrected her and told her it was a drink (and I think might might have come off rude) so I was going to tip extra because i felt bad. I did not like the Mai Thai that I ordered and my friend that tried it said it tasted like a shrimp cocktail (probably from dirty glass ware) so I went up to the bar because I also did not liked it and exchanged it for a modelo instead. When I asked the bartender why she did not change the drink on my tab she said they charge me for the more expensive one and I kinda just looked at her in shock and her response was "not liking a drink isn't a reason not to pay for it" with attitude, which I know is not the case here because I have had friends send back drinks and it always gets switched. I did not catch her name but she had shoulder length kinda curly blonde hair and she was on the patio. I had never experienced service like this here I was really disappointed. Went to Cool beans for a marg bucket with my bf at the outside bar/patio. The blonde lady at the bar gives us our pink lemonade bucket and we sit down, and pour it into our glasses. We then notice that there's a fly in the bucket. No big deal it happens sometimes bc we're outside, so we just simply just go up to her and nicely ask for another one because of the fly in there. This bartender gives us the MEANEST attitude... breathes super heavy and seems bothered making another one again. She grabs the bucket and fills it with ice, and slams it SO HARD on the table in front of us some ice splashes in our eye. Then she takes our old glasses and aggressively throws the ice into the sink, and gives us the new bucket again slamming it hard onto the table the drink almost spills a bit. And then on top of all that, she gives us wayyy less alcohol this time compared to the first... l could see and taste the difference by a lot. I don't get what her issue was?? If she had a fly in her drink she would return it too. And whenever we initially walked up to the bar, she was just sitting at the side talking to her coworkers, and had to go back to her post to make our drink (twice) and as soon as we were done both times she went back to sitting and talking to them. She wasn't even busy. I guess we were bothering her by making her do her job. Horrible customer service by her. I saw another review talking about a blonde bartender being rude and I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same one. I don't get how people like her stay employed. read more

Absolutely love this place! Pitchers for $7 and other super cheap drinks if you're looking for a night out. Their food is also delicious although a little pricy! Had such consecutively poor experiences that I felt compelled to write my first yelp review.. 1. They hype up their divebrunch so hard, but come on guys... slapping a fried egg on or next to something and calling it brunch for weeks in a row? AND the whites are still gooey and runny? Gross. Whoever keeps coming up with those specials maybe just shouldn't anymore. Super slow coming out as well. 2. It smells like some FUNKY shit in there. Wtf is that? 3. Every time I have come in, I have been treated like I was an annoyance and not a customer. Two specific bartenders have made me feel consistently unwelcome. Don't know their names, but big tall stocky guy with gingerish/dirty blonde hair? And lady with short red hair. Service is lackadaisical and slow. 4. How TF am I gonna get cheese fries that come out without the cheese fully melted? Also, online it says their kitchen is open until midnight. I called in an order on a Friday night around 11:40 and was rudely told the kitchen was closed, like I was an idiot for even calling in. Well I will start with the fact that they do have a good value to food ratio. For $5 I was able to get one of their specials which included burger, fries, and a soft drink. With that in mind though, it was definitely a $5 meal, and some could argue that going to your local fast food chain would have yielded you the same food value minus the interesting atmosphere found here. What I realized was that people come here for the nostalgic factor from college, and that college kids enjoy a cheap burger/beer combo anywhere. They reason I give them a two is that the customer service was beyond ridiculous. The foosball table is clearly not working, but I still wanted it to, and inserted 50 cents into their main profit maker. Bare in mind that there is no sign that says foosball machine doesn't work. So I went up to the bar and mentioned it to them that the machine didn't work and if I could get my 50 cents back. While I would normally accept this as a sunk cost, the waiter just shrugged her shoulders and said not my problem. She didn't even put up a sign, I think it is an inside scheme to steal from college kids (and here I thought it was just government loans that were predatory). Cool Beans is indeed cool beans, and rice if you'd like. The atmosphere is cool, drink specials very cool, the patrons are cool but keep to themselves - not as mingle-able as Lou's. Generally the bar staff is cool, too. I finally found someone in Denton who knows how to make a, as he called it, "completely proper" Old-Fashioned, Don Draper style. Thank you! However he's the only bar tender there who knows how to do it so when he's not working I'm SOL. Another guy said he was busy with other customers when I tried to tell him what was in it. Well, fine then. I love the rooftop patio. Even if you can't find a seat, the railing gives a great view of the street for drunken people watching. Occasionally a band will be performing up there but on those nights I prefer to listen from across the way. I've heard the grub is delicious during the day but have yet to try it. What can I say! The outside of the building is very unappealing, we walked in and were only greeted by the smell of stale alcohol and cigarettes. We proceed to find a menu, albeit sticky. The walk to the top deck was somewhat scary. The wooden boards were falling apart and nails sticking out. When we reached the top deck there were only a few picnic type tables, which were gross and dirty. We walked back down the stairs and outside and no one from the the restaurant ever said hello or acknowledged us. I highly recommend making sure you tetanus shot is up to date before entering. Seriously what I would consider the BEST bar in Denton. I lived in that cozy college town for 5 years, trying several bars, and would highly recommend Cool Beans above all to anyone asking. First thing you must try is the food. From NOMMY burgers to grilled cheese sandwiches to tacos, this bar has an absolutely amazing menu that's seriously cheap for the quality it provides. $4.95 for a filling blue cheese and wing sauce burger with waffle fries? Yes please. That's better than Whataburger, my friends. I'm not sure I'd call it a 'dive bar', but it does have the welcoming atmosphere of one, with an array of regulars and cheap affordable prices. They have awesome specials every day and happy hours that make your wallet and face quite, quite happy. Most of the staff has been there for a few years, and know the place like the back of their hand. They're all really friendly, and usually get to know your name. I'd describe them as alternative, but in no way are they pretentious or hipster. They're just ... awesome. Best place to sit is on the roof. Where else can you drink beer and eat burgers on a roof with a view of Fry St? Nowhere else. I loved going to sit up there and watch the shenanigans going on around Halloween at the frat-rat bars across the street. So entertaining, yet I was up and away from the annoying dude-brah's. Also, they occasionally have eclectic musicians that play on the roof. I've never seen a bad show there, even though its always a surprise. From indie-electro, to folk, to jazz/blues, it's always been a fun time. This is one of the few bars you won't find dude-brahs, and one of the few you actually COULD find a date at. That's not why people go - but the patrons are so laid back and cool, it's definitely worth saying hi to a few of them. Tuesday nights are Trivia nights - go with a group of friends, or go up alone and join a group, and you'll have a fantastic time with a usually good soundtrack. Jackson (the manager so we were told) allowed an employee to get loud and angry into my friends faces. After being loud and disrespectful he continued to play tug a war with OUR pitcher. Yes, tug a war. He would not let go of our beverages and continued to yell at us to leave. When we asked for a manager they claimed they would rather not Management get involved. Cool Beans is my kind of bar. Slightly dingy (but not gross), cheap-ish beer, decent food, darts, and personality. As a warning, I mostly use Cool Beans for its food and the occasional lunch-beer (don't judge me). I especially like the cool bean burger, which comes with a big tortilla chip, salsa, and refried beans. The grilled chicken salad is also surprisingly good, it is enough to feed me, and I'm quite a big guy. They will honor most reasonable requests (inspired by my trip to Toronto, my friends and I once got nachos but with fries instead of chips... filthy but delicious). I couldn't tell you about the cocktails, I'm more of a food, beer, and neat whiskey kind of guy. It's your typical Fry St. bar, but with a roof. I believe Thursdays are LIT night. They have concerts on the roof on occasion and celebration Oktoberfest with Lucky Lou's and Riprocks. Now that the new apartments have gone up on Fry, Cool Beans is bordered by them in the back and on the side. I'm waiting to see how this will affect the concerts and if people will cause problems from the apartment balconies. read more

And I get it, your clientele is comprised of so-called hipsters and under age college kids, but at 5 pm on a Friday did you REALLY have to scan our id's and make us sign a TABC agreement, bartender girl? As some have mentioned before, the deck on top of the bar is really great, although sometimes there's a lack of seating. Anyway, great view of Fry/Hickory from up there. Food is pretty good as well. Wow! About the only word that can describe this delicious concoction the chef has created in the donut burger. It's a Hypnotic donut sliced in half with a smashed patty, cheese and caramelized onions. Simple, elegant, and most importantly TASTY!! We ordered a side of the cheese fries to go with and they were top notch too. If the rest of the menu is anything like my small sampling I can't wait to come eat here again. Reading the reviews it seems some people complain about the bartenders, but they are probably people who were cut off or denied service because what they want violates TABC rules. If you want the bar to stay open, then don't ask them to do something illegal. If you argue or berate them, like the guy I saw the other day, you are going to get kicked out, and you deserve to be. From what I've seen, the bar tends not to attract frat boys, so there is less drama than usual for a bar in a college town. They also host dart games and trivia. If you want good food, inexpensive drinks, friendly service, and relaxed atmosphere, this is a great bar. read more

UGH, I'm so torn. This is by far my favorite bar in Denton. They have great food, cheese fries with REAL cheese on them, veggie-options (refried bean tacos are amazing) and such a cool little set-up. The only thing is, they need to freaking fire their entire staff, and rehire. Multiple times my friends and I have left discussing how rude the bartender was. We're social people and we tried to make the job easy for the bartenders, and have conversation as well, but damn. Some people are just not friendly it seems. Normally I don't stray far from the square, but a friend convinced me to go to Cool Beans for "Beanstock" (an all day FREE music festival with some really fantastic bands) and now its my Fry St. home. The bartenders are really friendly, but also badasses. I've seen some of these chicks kick out guys twice their size. Also, the door girl always has a smile on her face and makes an effort to call everyone by name. Finally, Cool Beans is where I had the best margarita I have tasted to date. Seriously, I've searched for an equal margarita, and have yet to find one that compares. The only problem...you have to know who to ask, and I can't remember who made it. read more

Cool Beans is a nice little dive bar where you can have a food and drinks cheap. I normally order a burger and fries when I stop in there. They have some TVs and arcade machines in the back, and a foosball table. The roof has another bar area where live entertainment can play when the weather is nice. Otherwise the band normally plays in the front room. I have it 3 stars simply because I normally just stop in and grab a bite to eat. I've only listened to a band play there once or twice and normally prefer the bands playing at The Garage (formerly Muthers) better. read more

On the back wall of Cool Beans is a crudely painted hamburger. If you have a hamburger painted on your wall, one would assume you are going to have incredibly good hamburgers. The hamburgers are mediocre. They serve a frozen patty with frozen fries. And because it's a frozen patty, it can't be cooked to order. Well done burgers are only good from about three places in Dallas, and unfortunately Cool Beans isn't one of them. And then there are nachos. The nachos were OK. Sub-par flavorless taco meat with canned beans and some toppings. I mean, it's bar food. If you're stoned, or have lowered expectations, or you're already drunk, then this food is probably delicious. But I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. But at least it's cheap. And there is beer. Good, cold beer. Go for that. read more

It was a sad day when they closed off that extended section directly across the bar. I mean, we need to make room for that Walgreen's for real. Took advantage of the nice weather and decided to try the Bean Burger. It was freaking delicious, I tried it with the waffle fries. The only thing is that it's a bit over priced, maybe because it's more of a bar than a restaurant but I paid $9.50 plus the tip. The place is definitely not kid friendly because smoking is allowed, which is why I waited for the nice weather to be able to eat outside upstairs. The bathroom has not been cleaned in years my kid had to use the facilities and I kid you not there was puke all over the toilet and wall. I didn't try anything alcoholic so can't tell you about the prices or drinks. The guys in there will not greet you when you come in, but he was friendly and knowledgeable about the food. He was more of a bar tender than a server, but either way he was nice. I will definitely go again, I'll just use the bathroom at home. read more
