We visited again for a late lunch for my son's birthday and let me tell you, EVERYTHING from service to food was amazing. Our waters were never empty. My Paloma and dirty martini were fabulous. My daughter ordered the pot roast grilled cheese, zero complaints. She absolutely loved the onion jam. My two youngest had the kid's tenders and a full salad. Again no complaints. My husband and I shared the crab stuffed flounder. Absolutely delicious. The 5 grain risotto was creamy, the seasoned veggies had the perfect bite to them. The fish was perfect cooked. My mother had the BLT. That thing was STACKED with thick cut perfectly crispy bacon. My son and his girlfriend each had the hot honey chicken sandwich and the Nashville hot chicken. I walked by 940s Kitchen for over a year, not realizing what I was missing, until today. And I have been missing something special! It's unassuming from the entrance, but it's in a historic square in Denton, so I know it's going to have charm. And charm is the right word for this restaurant. Exposed old brick walls, the kind you know have experienced much over the past 100 years. The decor looks like a step back in time (but modern) almost like you're walking back into the 1940s. It's gorgeous! The food was super good too! I had the eggplant sandwich and I enjoyed every bite. The thing I really like about this restaurant is all the vegetarian portions along with the normal staple meat options. It's a wonderful menu. The staff was in point - very polite and friendly. My wife, daughter, & I were looking for a nice spot for lunch and stumbled upon this nice looking restaurant. The inside has some cool art and just overall a good vibe. My daughter ordered the kids grilled cheese (not listed on the menu), I ordered the Steak Huevos Rancheros (suggested as the waitresses favorite thing off the brunch menu), and my wife got the BLT. The kids grilled cheese ($6) is a great price, and comes with fries. We asked to switch the fries out for fruit but they ended up bringing both fries and fruit which was fine. My daughter enjoyed the fruit and grilled cheese. My Steak Huevos Rancheros ($12) was decent at best. The steak was not very good. It was a little tough, not much flavor, and cooked well (I wasn't asked how I would like it cooked). The salsa and sauce in the dish has a nice spiciness to it. Eggs and potatoes were ok. My wife enjoyed the BLT ($8 which is a great price as well!) but her fries were soggy and not hot which leads us to the service... Our waitress was nice, but she disappeared for long periods. My daughter ordered her grilled cheese and a water with a top. 5-10 mins later she comes back and says she's been looking for a top for the water and then wanted to confirm if my daughter wanted Grilled Cheese. I figured at that point the food was already ordered. I asked for hot sauce when ordering my dish, when the food was ran to the table there was no hot sauce. By the time the waitress came to our table to check how the food was or if we needed anything I was almost done with my plate. My wife was almost done with her BLT by the time she was able to reorder the fries to have them hot and crispy. They did remake her fries and they were good. I like 940's it's definitely my first choice but my wife is in love which is why I gave it 4 stars and not 5. I usually go for a drink, I'm not very thrilled by the food but the drinks are very good. I usually get a strawberry whiskey sour and it does the job everytime. The food is decent I would definitely purely encourage everyone to try it on their own. The vibes are nice and laid back with good music playing most of the time. Travel Eats: Denton. In town for a conference and my colleagues and I picked 940's Kitchen & Cocktails from the Yelp app for drinks and dinner after our presentation. The place had a very unassuming storefront that housed a bar a few stand alone tables and a wall of booths. We grabbed a booth and was approached with a fun looking cocktail menu and a separate happy hour eats menu. We ordered cocktails and a couple of appetizers. We ordered the Chips and Dips plate- which you got to pick your dips- we chose the Queso and the Elote. The queso was good (but nothing different)...the Elote was delicious and was a great bite. They gave us an order of the Bruschetta, not really sure why, but who's gonna knock a free app. The bruschetta was good and had avocado and red pepper which gave it an appealing green/red visage and it was served on a wooden platter that has a balsamic drizzle. It was a good bite as well- made even better as it was a comp. Finally, I ordered a Tenderloin Grilled Cheese (no picture, sorry...I blame the cocktails). The grilled cheese had slices of pork tenderloin and a nice cheese lend melted perfectly onto classic buttered bread, topped with grilled sweet onions and grilled. It also tasted pretty good, but probably could have had a bit more cheese as the tenderloin dominated the bite, where a nice cheese pull would have the perfect way to finish that bite. Ridiculously bad service. Sunday evening, early evening, Maybe 3 tables sat, and 5 people at the bar. So the restaurant is basically empty at 5:30pm. We walk in and get behind a group of 5 with one dad holding a toddler in his arms. We all wait. And wait. Finally hostess who has been strolling about shows up and seats the family ahead of us. Then she seats us. She brings water, to her credit. But then walks away without asking if we want drinks, food, nothing. Just strolls away to the back of the restaurant. My wife and I busy ourselves fixing our crazy wobbling high top table by stuffing napkins under the table. Finally we get things semi stable. We talk about our kids for a bit. I interrupt the convo to walk to the bar to order a drink since it seemed like it may be a bit before our server returns. The bartender after a minute makes his way over and asks if he can help. I order a cocktail. He looks at our table and says, "Ok I'll get started on that. But she will take care of you." referring to our server. Just a curt little reprimand for taking care of myself. Reminding me I need to play by the rules in their house. Hey I can live with that. I play dumb and say "Oh, ok." And return to my seat. Wifey and I continue the convo. Minutes pass. Nothing. Wifey had her food order picked out. After some more time passes I look back at bartender buddy and he is shooting the bull with the 5 dudes at the bar. He could have made my cocktail 3 times in the meantime. I look at wifey and say, "let's go." We stand up to leave and I let bartender buddy know we are peacing out. He kind of looks over at the well as if he had started my drink. Naw. Nothing there buddy. Anyways, not a good outlook when a restaurant starts thinking they are better than their patrons. We wanted to like this place more than we did. We were first introduced to 940 during a Discover Denton tour. We decided to come here before a show and made a reservation ahead of time. The food was tasty and the cocktails were tasty, but the service was not good at all. We were seated in a booth away from the bar and main seating area, so maybe that's why it seemed like we were forgotten more than once. Our appetizer came out in an acceptable amount of time, but we waited over 30 minutes for our entrees. And my husband had to flag our server down to ask for the check. Maybe he was having a bad day? The food was delicious and that saved the 70 minute dining experience, but if you go here...try to avoid being seated at the dark booths in the back. The food was so bad. I used to love 940 and it was my go to in Denton. The Denton fried chicken was very dry, undercooked and greasy. The mashed potatoes were very thick and dry. Green beans were not seasoned. Asked for white cream gravy and they gave me brown gravy and said they were out of the white gravy. Also, the bartender didn't show up so I had to change my drink order to wine. I won't be returning as I have seen the service and food go downhill for a while. read more

We came in on a Sunday night. A few other patrons were at the bar; we opted for a comfy booth. We were sat immediately with a smile. The decor is upscale industrial. It has a nice vibe. Not too loud but not too quiet either. Definitely a pleasant place to have a date night. I ordered a tap cocktail flight since the waitress indicated that tap cocktails are what they are known for at 940's. The flight did not disappoint. The worst part was having to choose between all the awesome options. Presentation was gorgeous. The lavender elixir is very smooth with a sublime finish; it does not have the overpowering nature that many gin and tonic based drinks have. The rest of the flight was also very tasty, though I found the Sun's smoky mescal taste to be a bit overpowering. We ordered eggplant fries and the poutine for starters, along with a cup of tomato basil soup. My husband loved the poutine. I'm not a huge poutine fan but can say that it was done well with fresh ingredients. The eggplant fries had a surprisingly smoky taste--maybe due to the chipotle honey sauce. There was an interesting melding of textures that kept me wanting more. The jalapeño mustard went very well with the eggplant fries. The soup was coarsely blended and really was just a pretty basic cup of tomato soup. I probably wouldn't order it again. My husband ordered the Denton fried chicken for dinner and I had the house salad with fried chicken. The chicken was well seasoned but the breading was a bit thicker and too well done for my taste. I stole a bite of my husband's mashed potatoes--those were fantastic. Overall, the cocktails are worth the trip. The foods not bad at all. I was recommended 940's Kitchen & Cocktails by some friends from UNT and how their Denton fried Chicken was great. So, I ordered the Denton fried chicken dish, and it exceeded my expectations. As someone who isn't a huge fan of American food, I was pleasantly surprised by how well this dish captured what great American cuisine should be. The fried chicken was perfectly crispy and flavorful, the mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious, and the green beans were a nice complement. Everything was cooked to perfection! The service was also top-notch--our server, Tito, was friendly and attentive, making sure our water was always refilled and providing decent insight into the menu. As for the ambiance, it really has that "Denton feel." The decor is charming, with lovely paintings and nice furniture that fit perfectly with Denton Square. The bar area is inviting, too! Happy hour! Went with some girls from work. We were there on a weekday at 4pm... so my experience is based on a not super busy time. We had great service! So friendly and helpful. I don't see how anyone could be that attentive during busy hours, but it shows how they would prefer to serve without 500 customers. There were maybe 4-6 tables with people and a couple at the bar. Checked out 940 last night to celebrate a friend's wedding and had an amazing time. We were able to reserve a table and get sat once most of our party was there. Our server, Sydney, was so wonderful and welcoming! I checked out the drink and food menus and decided on the tenderloin grilled cheese, which came with a mix of American and Fontina cheese, sunny side egg, onion jam, and tenderloin. I asked Sydney about scrambling the egg instead of having it sunny side and she recommended that I get it cooked hard because it tastes great with the sandwich. She said she would check with the kitchen, and they were able to make the adjustment. For my drink, she recommended the berry basil mule. I was thinking it was going to be sweet, but combined with the basil, it had just a hint of sweetness that made it easy to sip and enjoy! Our food came out quickly, and we all ordered something different, so we got to try each other's entrees. My grilled cheese was not super heavy, and the combination of the American and Fontina cheeses was perfect. I love that I was able to swap out the fries for green beans. The green beans were amazing--garlic with a hint of sweetness. Everything was so good! The vibe was good as well. My friends and I were able to laugh and have a good time. I can't wait to come back and hopefully update with a more positive review. We came in on a busy Saturday so we sat at the bar. Hostess and bar tender were great. Especially the bar tender, super friendly and helpful. Helped us with our drink choices and food order as everything looked so good, we couldn't decide. We had a couple of cocktails on tap which were great, the bar tender even gave us a little tasting while we waited. Then we waited, and waited, and waited until finally leaving after about 45 minutes. Apparently the kitchen was short staffed, 3 in attendance not one of those being the chef, and nobody bothered to tell us. Many people walked out that night. What was even more unsettling was the fact that our drinks weren't even comped. We over heard other people getting their drinks comped but I think they just walked out. Right before we left, 2 different bar tenders went to check on our food, they said it wasn't even near to being next and other larger parties who arrived after us had already been served. Denton Chicken was overcooked, dry and unseasoned. Mashed potatoes and green beans were unseasoned. Mushroom ravioli had no sauce and no seasoning. Raviolis were overcooked. Chocolate cake was stale. We've been to 940's a couple times now and have really enjoyed it. It gets busy so make reservations if you can. The atmosphere can be a little loud but that's to be expected in an open concept space. The servers were helpful and came by to check on us frequently. The food was good. We tried the shaved Brussels sprout salad with goat cheese and apples. The poutine and fries had a tasty sauce that was somewhere between an au jus and a gravy. The pimento cheese dip was ok. I love a good caprese salad so we definitely had to try the caprese skewers and they did not disappoint. Our favorite dish by far was the mushroom ravioli, it was so creamy and earthy. New American with a HEAVY emphasis on Southern cuisine. I'd call it a straight up Southern restaurant, but there's a smattering of items like eggplant fries, poutine, or mushroom ravioli. Service wise, the servers and bartenders were frantically taking care of the bar patrons. So much so that I didn't get a menu or water till 10 minutes after my arrival at the bar. I don't hold any animosity, but I have to say it's not tip top. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with green beans, as well as a half order of the house salad. Their fried chicken cutlets is huge! It spills over sides and has a decent crunch to it. There's jalapeno listed in the aioli, but it's more of a tickle than anything spicy. Overall, a satisfying sandwich. The green beans were surprisingly good! Well salted with a good amount of butter, and what felt like a touch of soy sauce? The house salad was also great. People who are older may remember when the previous business was actually a bar/coffee shop owned by an older immigrant family, who called the place The Brickhouse Coffee Shop, which served beer and sold finger food to accompany it: Live Music flowed, with rock and roll bands playing most week nights. It's a time of change in our downtown Denton area and new businesses are emerging in the square, and further down the street on Hickory St. at Industrial St., where the iconic Dan's Silverleaf anchors an emerging strip center, where a taco shop at the far southern end. First time here did not live up to the hype. The ambiance was nice; basic but clean and organized. I enjoyed the music. I'm not sure if it's the normal choice, but this night it was 90's Rap. We were pestered with gnats the entire meal. The cocktails and appetizer were the best part of the meal. I ordered The Sun; if you like mezcal and tajin, this drink is for you. The lemon drop martini was very tart, but the sugar rim helped balance it out. The tenderloin Mac and cheese made it worth coming back for. It came out quickly. The Mac and cheese had great flavor and just the right amount of creaminess; it wasn't too runny or too dry. The tenderloin was extremely tender, though it tasted more like a pot roast. Still delicious! The fried onions on top added a satisfying texture difference and tied in all the flavors. The serving was enough of a meal in it of itself, so it's a great dish to share with others. My mom and I ordered two meals to split; the shrimp carbonara and the cuban (a special for the day). My mom told our server, Brooklyn, we were sharing both food items. She did not state to bring them out one at a time. The bread of the cuban tasted stale and was rather tough to chew. The pulled pork didn't have much flavor. Overall the sandwich was very dry. The fries were decent; nothing exceptional about them. Brooklyn never checked on us after dropping the food off. About 20 minutes after finishing the sandwich, Brooklyn finally came to our table. It was at this time I asked if the shrimp carbonara was still coming out. She gave a confused look at the table and stated she would check on it. After a few minutes she returned and stated it would be coming out shortly; no explanation as to why this occurred was given. The table next to us (a two top) received both of their dinners and finished them before we received our second meals. Another 10-15 minutes passed before the shrimp carbonara was delivered. My mom asked Brooklyn why it took so long for the second dish to come out. Brooklyn stated the kitchen was backed up with a large table. This would mean that the kitchen sent out half a ticket before completing the order, with an entire 20-30 minutes between each dish being served. What is more likely, and what I believed happened, is that Brooklyn forgot to ring in the pasta dish for whatever reason. She only rang in the appetizer and the sandwich, and when the kitchen completed that order it was sent out. After being called out on her mistake, she then tried to rush the order, but the big tables order slowed things down. It simply does not make sense for a kitchen to send out half the order before completing the ticket. Very disappointed that Brooklyn had the chance to be honest and explain her mistake, but decided to lie instead. Whether it was directly her mistake or not (which I 100% believe it was), it took at least 30 minutes for our second entree to be delivered- this warrants some kind of apology or comp in my opinion. The shrimp carbonara was nearly inedible. There was way too much pepper and salt. The shrimp was the only good part of the dish. The bacon bits were much too big. We didn't finish it. Brooklyn also did not check on us after dropping the food off. If you come here, limit yourself to the tenderloin mac and cheese. I will not be rushing to try this establishment again anytime soon, and I will certainly avoid Brooklyn as a server. read more

This place gives me whiplash! I SWEAR! We keep coming back to see if things have improved. Disappointed again! Service was extremely slow. My husband and I had both finished our drinks before the food arrived. Our server checked on us once right before the food arrived. The tenderloin grilled cheese was tasty as were the chicken biscuit sliders. But per usual the hashbrowns were rubbery. The chef should take note that this has been our test on whether or not to return here. Hashbrowns are pretty basic. And they are consistently bad here. Until we have word that management has changed or that the chef has changed, I doubt we will return. We just never know if we will get good service or if the food will be worth the $$. read more

I was very disappointed tonight. The first time I went here, about one year ago, it was excellent! Loved the drinks, service, dinner, everything. Tonight we had terrible service. All our orders were wrong and we had to go find someone to send our server. I sent my risotto back. It was rice and diced tomatoes in water. Runny, flavorless and just bad. Not creamy, no flavor, literally flavorless grainy rice and uncooked diced tomatoes in water. I tried salting it and that didn't help. I ordered that with added chicken: no chicken. Last year when I got mushroom ravioli with added chicken it was delicious. Pulled, rotisserie style roasted flavorful chicken. After the fact tonight I was brought a bowl of diced grilled tough rubber chicken squares, also flavorless. My dinner companions also didn't get any requested condiments and even the salad orders were wrong. Just a truly bad experience. Not recommended and will not be back. Sad. read more

Great place on the square! Their seasonal drinks were amazing! Definitely try their pumpkin and rum cocktail. Their burger was really good, just a little dry. I also had their risotto and honestly...it was kind of a disappointment, I'm pretty sure it was made with quinoa, so not a traditional risotto. Staff is polite and prompt, they were very accommodating with some of the changes we wanted to make. I didn't go for brunch but I've heard their brunches are amazing.
