They said that there was a 90 degree angle in the pipe and it was completely blocked, and they would need to cut the pipe and alter the angle for easier flow. They were both very kind guys! However, the master plumber said it would cost $3200! I said that was too much, and he said he'd discount me $400. So, I actually paid $2890. I researched after the job was completed and I was definitely taken advantage of. The rate for that type of job (not cutting into walls) should have been at least about $1000+ less. I'm very disappointed because I really wanted to believe they were being honest. UPDATE: I spoke with Elias and he agreed that the charge was too high. Without going into both in detail, after ruling out and confirming one possibility as not the issue, the other possibility turned out to be spot on. Unfortunately, this possibility forced the need to replace the unit. I do think the overall cost to replace the unit was pretty pricey, but the manager at Allen was kind enough to provide me with a 15% discount, which I hugely appreciated!! I started off having them do some plumbing work for me to correct issues identified during a water meter replacement. They did a great job so I quoted for some more work - a leaky toilet valve, replacing the main water shutoff gate valve that leaks by, and a spigot that cannot decide whether it leaks or no. They sent thorough quotes that gave me all the necessary information to gather comps (none of which were comparable in price or thoroughness). I decided to move forward with the water heater and leaky toilet valve (when it rains it pours; AC went out at the same time I needed this job) and Tim showed up right at 9. He was polite and respectful and got right to work. He brought the new water heater in on a dolly, appropriately strapped and used a part of the cardboard box to protect the unit from the ratchet strap. When he had to run out for a part, he let me know and went to get it. The water heater install and toilet valve replacement took around 3 hours. I did a goof and moved cash to the wrong bank account and didn't have my checking account funded on the day of service. I called and talked to Audrey while Tim was still on site and she said it was totally fine to write a check that would be ready to cash on Friday (it's a Wednesday currently). Customer service is top notch and a great example of why to keep using independently owned businesses when private equity and corporate options seem like an easier option. One consideration is that of the 4-5 times Front Range Water Heater employees have been at my house, none have covered their shoes. For service professionals entering a home in all weather conditions and going back and forth to the nasty crawl space, that's a level of respect to the homeowner that I hope for every time and rarely encounter these days. In 2025, I did not hesitate in calling them to investigate why my grinder pump for basement sewage and wastewater would not turn off. Within a few hours of my call, an experienced and knowledgeable plumber arrived. He investigated, and found that the grinder pump switch had failed. The unit was probably 20 to 30 years old - well before I purchased the property, and while the pumping was okay, the switch failure would not turn off the pump. He provided pricing for three different options. Other Yelp reviewers complain that the cost for their services was unexpectedly high. Yet, when I checked the average cost of a professional replacement of a grinder pump, the quoted pricing was within the national average. It was a little higher than the medium cost, but I understood the installation would be dependable. Given the cost for the unit was about $3,000, I inquired about financing, and the plumber quickly connected me with the company's financing partner. I was approved for the loan on favorable terms and we were able to complete the transaction within minutes. Given the late afternoon hour, the plumber promptly drove to pick up the replacement unit from a local supplier. He had the new unit tested and functioning within 45 minutes of his return. The new unit has a separate switch, which is the most common failure for these devices, and so the next repair in the late 2030s or early 2040s will likely only need to replace the switch. Sometimes it pays to shop around and find the absolute best pricing. Other times, when a critical component fails that affects the well-being of my family, timely, well-researched decisions are the only option. Of course, I'd prefer the price of this project would have been lower. But given the results, I am satisfied and know the new unit will likely last 10 to 15 years or longer.
