We ordered two vegetarian pies: Mediterranean (with a garlic parmesan base, fresh baby spinach, red onion, feta, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, light mozzarella cheddar cheese mix and Italian herbs) and Premium Veggie (with onions, broccoli, spinach, garlic, eggplant, peppers, mushrooms, pizza sauce and mozzarella cheddar cheese mix). We got thin crust and extra cheese on both. The crust was lovely -- nicely thin and crispy with just enough heft to support the generous toppings, and enough bready goodness so it wasn't like eating a cracker. The toppings were all fresh, cut in perfect bite sizes, and not over-cooked. Cooley's Kitchen is a cute little place with friendly service. There were about 6-7 cozy booths for eating in. BYOB. While visiting my daughter and her family in Enfield, CT, we searched for a place to eat and do take out for our 3+ hour journey home. A quick search on Yelp brought us to this wonderful gem. We stopped into Cooley's Kitchen while visiting family in Connecticut, and somehow it already feels like part of "home" for us. Jen helped us find a table near the back during dinner rush, which ended up being perfect. Low traffic, quieter, and right by a beautiful sunset. As disabled guests with a power chair, sensory overload can happen fast for us, especially in busy restaurants. Whether intentional or not, both Jen and Aaron seemed incredibly aware of the environment around us. Several times when the sun started shining directly into our eyes, one of them would naturally step into the light while checking on us so we could keep enjoying our cheeseburger grinder without getting overwhelmed. Small thing maybe, but it mattered a lot to us. What stood out most was how human everything felt. Not forced "customer service." Real care. Jen sat and talked with patrons and you could immediately tell this is a place locals genuinely love. Friends, families, regulars. Everyone seemed comfortable there. They checked in with us based on timing and body language, not because some policy told them to stop by every few minutes. Even the thumbs up from across the room felt personal and warm. We had a chance to talk a little about the restaurant too. Hearing that this was Aaron's dream and that they've been building it together for the last two years honestly made the experience even better. You can feel the passion behind the place. Aaron being a chef and Jen helping build the community side of it makes the whole restaurant feel alive in a way chain restaurants never do. Every time we come to Connecticut, we stop here...usually more than once. Truthfully, places like this are part of why we've started looking at Ellington as somewhere we could someday call home, even all the way from Iowa. Good food matters. Tried again, decent food but still some stumbles Saw a bunch of good reviews roll in, so decided to make the trek here and give them a fair shake. Sometimes quality gets lost in delivery, so I went for a dine in experience to get it as fresh as I can. Place was quiet, was only myself and 4 staff. Staff were engrossed in conversation, was a slow night. Seated myself and eventually ordered meatballs and a sausage Taormina. After about 35 minutes, everything gets delivered at the same time. I took pics and dug in. The meatball was much better this time around. Soft, almost too loose, but flavorful. The sauce was still really good, and it was coated in cheese rather than being buried in it. That was a solid bite. The soup and bread were good but lacking. The soup needed seasoning, it was creamy with plenty of sausage bits in it, but lacked any semblance of flavor. The garlic bread was soft and crisped nicely. only one side looked toasted, and it had some garlic flavor but it was very subtle. Both needed salt, which helped. The sausage Taormina is a dish I have no frame of reference to, and it was okay as a dish. The pasta was cooked well, the sausage was nice and charred, there was a large portion of pasta, and there was plenty of butter. The issues were that the olive oil and butter didn't really stick to the pasta. Pasta was cooked well, but water was not salted. The garlic was nowhere to be found, and the Italian seasoning and Parmesan was lightly added. Meaning that it was a big plate of buttered noodles with little flavor contrast to help it along. The broccoli was a little firm for my taste, and very much an afterthought. Easy enough fixes. Salt the pasta water, use salted butter and saute garlic cloves in butter. Fully drain pasta then saute pasta in butter before tossing in seasoning, olive oil, charred broccoli, then garnish with freshly grated Parmesan. None of that was done, but if it was it would've been a much better dish if they did. The staff at this location are not use to having dine in customers. Water was never filled, nothing was paced, was only checked on after I asked for the bill, and when it came to pay I waited 5 minutes till I gave up and paid cash. There is a potential here, but it's very much comfortable as the basic pizza delivery joint. In that way, it can be good for that if they focus on that aspect. It's not the best as a dine in location, but they do use quality ingredients and they can put out good food if they want. Good meatballs, good bread, but stick with the pizza and maybe the fried items. read more

Anytime we have come to Cooley's kitchen. Very consistent with quality and quantity. And yes you will get a higher quantity of food. Salads are hugggge. Small garlic bread is very large. My son loves their grinders and pizza. And the size of the meatballs are big.. we haven't had a bad meal. I normally get salad with grilled chicken and I have had the chicken wings. Most probably know Cooley's Kitchen as a great little Pizza shop. But if you haven't tried their entrees, you are seriously missing out! So, if you live anywhere near Ellington, Connecticut then you REALLY need to give this place a try. We live in Enfield, Connecticut and it's always worth the trip. Pizza (Meadowview Special and Pepperoni) and grinders (Ham and Turkey) for myself and guests two weekends in a row. So far it's very good. so...Here's the problem. Dead fridge not able to refill new one until 24 hours after a Wednesday delivery. Tossed everything out of the full fridge. What to do??? This little restaurant has a great reputation for all that it serves. When you're gluten free even a great restaurant can be very disappointing and there are some things you just can't find - but not here!! My first visit to Cooley's was for pizza. They did exceed my expectations! Pizza was delicious with the best crust in the area. My next visit was for a grinder - yes, a gluten free grinder! I've previously only had one elsewhere that was not worth eating. This was really great. Both my friend and I could only eat half because our grinders had good sized servings of tuna (me) and turkey (her). We both look forward to trying a gf pasta dish. The owners and their helpful daughter couldn't be more welcoming and friendly. They keep a very clean and comfortable dining room and unisex bathroom. Ordered the small calzone with 2 containers of marinara and got one but charged for extra. Food is good don't get me wrong. They have a great menu with many options. Service usually takes a little longer than your regular pizza restaurant 35-45 mins. They don't serve any side with your entree without a $4 up-charge and the dishes are already priced at 11-17 dollars making you expect some sort of side. read more

Wow! We were impressed. Ordered for the first time this evening and we will be back! We ordered 3 small pizzas for pick up for 5pm. We ordered on the slice app around 415pm. When I arrived a few minutes before 5, our pizza was hot and ready. We ordered half cheese/ half pepperoni and ricotta, a meadowview pizza (ricotta base, spinach, bacon, caramelized onions, etc), and a cheesesteak pizza. All 3 were excellent!! No complaints on any of them. The toppings were generous, the pizza was hot, and the crust actually has flavor. This I would describe as Greek style pizza. Highly recommend ordering smalls so you can sample their awesome flavors. It's 8 small slices so it's great for testing. My daughter (2.5 years old) loved the cheese! They did such a nice job renovating the inside and it smelled fabulous in there. I saw people dining in with delicious looking grinders and chicken parm. Staff was very friendly. First dry pizza I've ever had. I'm guessing the bread dough is purchased being so thin and comes from a freezer. That would explain the almost total lack of sauce and chewy crust and general lack of normal moisture. Somewhat strange after taste. Not sure if this from an oven that needs cleaning or the lack of sauce. Maybe the weekend help overcooked the pizza? Whatever the case I wouldn't recommend them. read more

I'm writing this review after our third visit. The first and second visit we dined in and the third was carry out. We have ordered the Meadowview pizza, sausage pizza, and plain cheese. They were all delicious and made with fresh ingredients! We've also had a salad, wings, and cheese ravioli they were great too. This is a great place to dine in or carry out in Ellington.
