    Chicken Sandwich (crispy, Buffalo style)
    Mark T.

When it comes to a neighborhood bar to grab a beer and watch the game, Coop's may work well. It has a divey neighborhood bar vibe and friendly service. However, at least as far as the chicken sandwich is concerned, the food was a terrific miss. I am a food guy - 9/10 times (or more) when I go out I will order something to eat. Therefore, I say if you're going to have food on the menu, do it at least halfway right. I will say the bread was done well, and I wouldn't not be surprised if it's baked in house or purchased fresh from a local baker. Yet, while it can be argued that bread makes up ~50% of the sandwich by volume, this does not count as halfway right. Nice effort, and thanks for the laugh. The problem lies in the chicken. Even though I had ordered it crispy instead of grilled, I think this was interpreted only as fried, not breaded. Not only do I believe it is hard to keep moisture in an unbreaded tender, but these were severely overcooked, dry, and tough. The Buffalo sauce also didn't quite do it for me. While I understand I have high heat tolerance, I also didn't pick up on that whiff of Buffalo when a fresh piece of Buffalo chicken is brought out of the kitchen. Taste-wise it was extremely mild, lacking and acidity; it did however have some sweetness. The execution was also not great. While Dave's can pull off a tender in a sandwich and not have everything fall apart, Coop's is not so fortunate. As there were two tenders (and therefore a valley) inside, it was near impossible to keep the veggies contained. I somewhat understand the thinking behind having them (veggies) be requested as opposed to included by default, at the same time this option seems to have been added as an afterthought. Finally, the fries are A-OK, they seemed fresh, were crisp, and I don't recall specifics on seasoning, I can tell you they were not over-seasoned, nor was I reaching for the salt. So, while if I want to catch a game that isn't available via my antenna, I can see myself here with a beer. Yet, when it comes to food, I think I will be passing.

    Fried Chicken Sandwich

Ugh not what I remember at all! I came here for the first time in years, expecting the same great food I had before. Maybe my memory is deceiving me but I was unexpectedly disappointed... My husband and I ordered the "drunken meatballs" to start. The sauce on the meatballs was the star of the night. It was a nice mix of sweet & savory with a hint of chili pepper flavor. The meatballs were small and uniform, which makes me think they were frozen and came out of a package. I understand this is not a gourmet Italian restaurant but if I'm paying for a meal, I expect more effort put in. Then I ordered a fried chicken sandwich with honey mustard. The sandwich was 2 chicken tenders thrown in between a bun. Not even a chicken patty. This made it difficult/unpleasant to eat. I gave up after a few bites. The honey mustard was literally honey mixed with French's yellow mustard - omg just no, no, no. I've never experienced anything like this. Just say you don't have it available instead of trying to make a horrible, last minute version. I know times are tough right now for restaurants but this was just an unacceptable meal. Can't say I recommend, unfortunately.

Unfriendly bar tender. Greek salad did not have any pepperoncini, olives or Greek dressing. Pizza was burned and greasy. Just gross.

Disappointed to be the only people at the bar not offered popcorn. Service mediocre - if you aren't a regular it shows.

We were seated right away at a table in the middle of the floor. Told that was best that could be done. Like eating in an aisle. After a few minutes we were asked if we wanted still water or not. Still, we said. Then if we wanted drinks, told her water would be fine. Service started to decline from there. Also no condiments come to the table, but water. We ordered bread and butter and a spice bag, but vegetarian. No bread today ran out. And no plans to bake anymore. We wait close to 25 minutes for our appetizers. Spice bag arrives and I had read rave reviews about this. Open it and its filled with chicken and french fries. Server grabbed it and told us, kitchen error. They would make another, be there in a minute or two. I asked would this show up with our entrees. No, be spaced apart. We waited over 15 minutes, it arrived. Was supposed to have cauliflower, peppers, onions and french fries. There was three pieces of cauliflower and no peppers or onions. What was there was tasty and well spiced. And as soon as we opened the bag and started eating, entrees show up. Fish and chips portions are huge and very nicely fried. Excellent crisp and fantastic steak fries. The Pizza #1, excellent tomatoed base and the crust had a good chew to it. I ordered the Beyond meat lasagna. Huge portion with a green salad and cole slaw. Cole slaw was creamy and very nice. Green salad was fresh but drenched in dressing. My fault should have asked for it on the side. The lasagna was disappointing. No seasoning, no garlic or onions or oregano. It was, I think a British version of lasagna. Ate about half could not eat more. No desserts, but drinks, tea and hot chocolate. Or I did not see it. Server apologized for the timing of the meals, the error with the Spice Bag and the lack of bread. She was sweet. Lots of sports being broadcasted, and a huge long bar. I would come for beer and soccer or football. If I wanted Irish bar food I'd be better going to the Burren. And parking is a challenge. They have a very small lot, we got lucky and found a spot. Hard pass on McGonagle's.

Understanding that we needed our bestie moment, I hopped on Yelp and searched for a "Good Chicken Sandwich" and at the top of the list was Kilroy's. As we were so close we decided to walk over as I could indulge in what the reviews were calling a "must-try!" Kilroy's sits on the side street, however it is super easy to find. The ambiance of the square as a whole puts you in High spirits as the street is lined with local eateries. Upon walking in, the ambiance is super chill and was perfect for bestie time. The design is simple, yet plays on the deep gray of the inside with colored accent lighting. The floor plan is open and presents the high table setup with the black table tops. As it was just us two, and the smaller tables were taken, we decided to sit at the bar. As soon as we were seated we were greeted by the smiling face of MaryKate. MaryKate welcomed us with excitement and truly set the tone for my Kilroy's experience. I told her that it was my first time and I was excited to experience the "5 Star Dive Bar!" We laughed as sge provided us with menus and proceeded to take our drink orders. As an avid Sweet tea drinker, I was hurt that they didn't offer sweet tea, however, MaryKate took a superior customer service approach and told me she could make sure I got my sweet tea... when she arrived back with my drink, her blend of unsweetened tea and simple syrup was spot on and I was in sweet tea bliss!! Scrolling the menu, the sandwich selection made it hard to choose as everything looked amazing. With a good chicken sandwich on the brain, I decided to order The Salem. The Salem consist of Grilled Chicken, Romain, Tomato, Bacon, American Cheese, and Chipotle Mayo on a golden toasted bun. I have One Word...WHOAAAAAAAAAA!!! The grilled chicken was perfectly seasoned and grilled. The chicken was tender, juicy, and had the perfect amount of char on the outside without having compromised the inside. The bacon was meaty and crispy. The level of crisp on the bacon provided as the perfect texture shift as it was layered between the chicken and freshly cut tomato. The chipotle mayo adds a flavor burst that heightens the sandwich and takes it from good to GOOD! However, even with all of that, we count discount the role of the bun. The golden toasted bun seals the deal as the buttery inside glued together all of the flavor profiles, while the soft outside entices you to bite deeper anticipating every layer of the sandwich from top to bottom. Oh yes, this is a chicken sandwich done right. Paired with well seasoned, golden crisp French fries, The Salem is a stand-alone champion as it makes you forget about the fries. LoL! However, the fries are def a main contender in the fight for taste bud attention. Overall, Kilroy's on the Square is my new go-to anytime I'm at my Bestfriends house. The Salem has the sun for now, however, I have my eye on The Wasp for my next visit. . Great food. Great service. Great prices. Great atmosphere. Great experience. Until my best trip to Boston, I'll dream of you, 'The Salem'.
