Cooper & Oak is a whiskey lover's dream. Sitting right on a main street on the East Side, this place hits you the moment you walk in. Floor to ceiling, wall to wall bottles, an overwhelming sea of whiskey that makes you want to slowly walk the room and take it all in. That is easier said than done. The space is classic New York narrow, with a main customer aisle only about three and a half feet wide and slim alleys on either side for the owner to move through and grant your whiskey wishes. The selection feels endless. Flights, single pours, doubles, rare finds, and approachable favorites, it is all here. What truly makes the experience special is the owner. He is generous with his knowledge, happy to answer questions, and clearly loves sharing what he has curated. One of the best moments, my wife asked for something sweet, wheated, and low proof, over a single cube. He smiled and said the hardest part of that order was the ice. No ice. Everything is served neat. A purist's paradise. Seating is extremely limited and there are no reservations, so get here early. Watching the locals roll in was half the fun. Everyone was greeted like an old friend, which tells you everything you need to know about this place. We wished we had more time to stay and explore, but another reservation pulled us away. Overwhelmingly beautiful and also very organized, my husband loved being able to try a variety of different whiskey. My cousin actually recommended this bar and I am so glad he did. It was the snazziest little library of a bar! I heard it's nicknamed New York's Smallest Big Bar because it is the tiniest bar I've ever been to, ran by one person, but has bookshelves full of whiskey, tequila, rum, and more! Even though there's only one bartender, Tomo Matsushita skillfully divides his attention, ensuring that each guest is attended to. He is funny and very knowledgeable and helps guide you through the options. Overall I love the warm and cozy vibe at Copper & Oak, it's a great place to try different kinds of liquor as they offer a plethora of flights. I do recommend that you be patient with Tomo and go with at least one other person since he's balancing his time with other guests it'll be nice to have company to chat with until he gets to you and your plus one. read more

Stopped by after getting a rezzie at DCP and the store definitely lives up to its name of Copper & Oak themes. Tomo has curated a wide selection of spirits and was able to give my well drunken buddy and I something new to experience (Weller bourbons are pretty awesome!) as well as more trivia info about finding this bottle overseas. Tomo was really knowledgable, coming around from time to time to share information about different types of drinks and the ones we were trying. He also gave us some lychee tequila on the house to try. Everything is smooth and pretty easy to drink. The atmosphere is lovely. The walls emanate an orange glow that creates a nice atmosphereThe space is small, but utilizes all of their wall space for their extensive collection of liquors, they have ladders to access the ones higher up. It got more crowded through the night. My friend said this place is really busy on weekends, making it harder to chat. This was my third visit here over an extended period of years. Each visit was very consistent. Great vibe, great music, great service from the Spirit Master, Tomo! He is extremely knowledgeable, and will make great recommendations based on your palette's preferences. It's a small and cozy spot on the Lower East Side, within walking distance to many other bars and restaurants in the area. I had a Japanese Whiskey Flight and I was very satisfied when my tasting was finished. It is definitely a unique experience. a great place to socialize with a friend or small group. Tomo is the sweetest / coolest bartender (he works Thursday - Saturday as a heads up). I loved the atmosphere (perfect for date night although I'm sure it gets busy fast and there's not too much seating). I ordered the New Born Japanese Whisky tasting flight ($36) and it was awesome. The third bottle is peated, so Tomo had some peat moss he showed us and explained how they smoke that to give that whiskey its flavor. He also let us try some small sips of Yamazaki (aged 12 years) -- I had no idea how premium this whisky was! And he gave us so much detail about the history of our whisky and taught us a lot. If you like whiskey this is it for you. It's a small space with an extensive selection. Go for a nightcap or maybe a relaxing evening.

The color of the back-lighting is appropriate, because this is a room of liquid gold, particularly if what you're prospecting is brandy, mezcal, tequila, rum, or especially whisk(e)y. And it's a gold rush too, with probably over 500 varieties of whisk(e)y, scotch, bourbon, both national and international. Seating is limited and fluid (pun intended), with only standing room on the left, one table for 2 in the back, and a row of chairs on the right. I found them to be uncomfortable and a little too close to the bar, but I'm not there for the seating! If it's crowded when you get there, wait a few minutes. Unless you're someone with a huge thirst and a heavily disposable income, folks tend to come and go after a few pours. Pours are typically 1 or 2 oz.. They'll leave the bottle there for photo ops, but don't try anything, there's surveillance cameras all over the place. You also get a fresh glass with every pour. That's probably because there's no room for a decanter of water, a spittoon and a dispenser of crackers. Which reminds me, they do have a very limited menu of snacks, but as of this review, 2 of the 4 snacks on their menu page were written in a strike-through font. The selection is amazing, everything from entry level potables through the expensive stuff. Everything appears to be served neat; I don't even know if you can request water or ice. Coming here is both satisfying and frustrating, both in good ways. It gives me an opportunity to try liquors I've wanted without having to buy the full bottle, but for each one I check off my list, I probably added another 3 or 4. read more

I don't really write reviews, or ever felt the need to go through with writing a bad review (especially for a smaller business). My friends and I came in on Friday night 3/10 and the staff here are SO rude. My boyfriend came in to use the restroom before we wanted to settle down and order some drinks, and one of the staff immediately came up to us and said "you guys are going to order some drinks right?". Both guys working do not know what customer service is. They could've simply offered us the drink menu and not be passive aggressive because they assumed we only came in to use the restroom. We felt pressured to purchase drinks after the staff came at us sideways. Not to mention, the other staff also made my girl friend that was with us feel extremely uncomfortable the way he approached her after she had an emergency and needed her partner's help in the restroom. Extremely unprofessional and a very unwelcoming place to spend a Friday night, would give this place 0 stars if I can. The only good thing was the whiskey holdings, but that doesn't even deserve another star because of our horrible experience. Do not go here! I am not someone who posts reviews often but my group and I left this bar feeling disrespected and scammed. Not knowing what to try, we asked the bartender on recommendations. With little help, my boyfriend decided on three different whiskeys for us to try. Without sharing the price he poured us three very small drinks and asked for our card to start a tab. After one round (which we did not finish) we asked for the bill. It was over $650. The lack of transparency in price and disrespect from the bartender was astounding. Tomo behind the bar is super knowledgeable, let him guide you and have fun trying stuff you may not be able to taste anywhere else! You can do pours in 1 or 2 oz size or tasting menus. Excellent bar! First off, it's a tiny sliver of a bar so I'm not sure how easy it is to get into on weekends. But their selection of fine liquor is excellent and the staff behind the bar are ever so knowledgeable that I always choose my drink after a conversation with the staff. Thanks to them I recently discovered an excellent sipping rum. They also host free tastings and I recently came in for a Yamasaki tasting series that was very informative and enjoyable. This is definitely the kind of bar you go to solo or with a special someone who appreciates the finer things in life. Their sister bar, Brandy Library is another excellent bar. read more

I had plans in the area but those fell through so I had to figure out something really quickly. I'm had Copper & Oak bookmarked but couldn't remember why but decided to give it a try. My bf and I walked in there on a Tuesday night. There was no one in the there so we weren't sure if it was open. Luckily it was. It's listed as a bar but it's really a tasting room. There are no cocktails or mixed drinks. Everything is served neat. The room is full of hundreds of bottle of liquor. The room is small so it could get crowded quickly. They have tablets that has the listing of everything they have by type. When we walked in we were handed the tablet without any explanation. It would have been nice to have been given an overview of where we were and how things worked. We scanned the tablet and decided to start with a rum flight. We were told what was in each glass and the bottles were left near us which was nice because we were able to refer back to it as we drank. We enjoyed our experience her. I came here with boyfriend to celebrate his birthday. He is a huge whiskey fan and we've been to multiple specialized whiskey bars in the past. We walked in and were seated quickly. The ambience itself is is beautiful with gold lighting, a metal/brassy bar, and the lining of the walls with different types of whiskey/bourbon. I really enjoyed the setting, it was intimate and quiet which was surprising because it was so small. I was worried about the noise level but it was totally fine. I do wish the chairs weren't bolted to the floor and we could move them closer so that I could have cuddled or held hands with boyfriend, given that it was a date spot. The variety of whiskey is impressive as well, there was a wide range of reasonably priced whiskeys and rare ones that I've never even heard up. We ordered a flight of whiskeys and had a very pleasant and informative conversation with the whiskey-tender who was knowledgeable on the subject. We discussed at length and he made a few recommendations based on boyfriends preference, which was wonderful. There are also a few other drinks such as wine if your party is looking for more beverage variety, but a few of the wines had whiskey/bourbon influences as well. Overall, a really great experience and I do think we will come back. One star off because when the doors open, gusts of wind blow through and that's really uncomfortable if you get cold easily. read more

What may be important to you... 1) this place is really all about experiencing the liquor as it is bottled, if your looking for cocktails, this may not be your place. 2) the seating is really cramped between the bolted-in bar stools and the bar you can sit at... for those of you who are even mildly overweight_ think tighter than an airline seat on Spirit. In fact, only reason for not giving the 5th star is due to the seating... they'd do better unbolting the chairs and removing some of them I think. read more

Whiskies galore! Or maybe whiskeys since we're in the US... No matter the spelling, Copper & Oak has what you need. And with their bright orange lighting and copper plated tables, it's hard to miss. They have knowledgeable staff, a crazy selection, menus on tablets, and pre-selected flights. A friend and I split the Scotch flight, which was delicious, and got pretty peaty toward the extremes. After that, we migrated over to the port cask finished Scotches, of which they had a pretty damn good selection. The only thing to watch out for is that it's a tiny/narrow space. The "tables" are pretty thin and for full pours, they give out high-stemmed snifters. Tables aren't the most stable, so if, for instance, there's a group of 4 bros next to you sporadically leaning hard on the table, you may have a bit of an anxiety attack. Definitely try to grab an open seat if you spot it! Oh, and they're not just limited to whiskey. They also have tequila and brandy by the front! read more

The bar is small and cozy (only 6 seats with some additional standing room) and it's really set up to be a high-end tasting room for rare, hard to find liquor. They have an amazing selection of armagnac, whiskey, rum, etc. There's a laundry list of bottles here that you genuinely can't find anywhere else in NYC. They did not serve proper quantity and they add hidden charges that raised bill over 40 percent of what was expected. When I asked how final bill was so high they did not itemize bill. Great spot to try something new! This bar lined to the ceiling with bottles specializes in serving liquor neat like whisky, bourbon, scotch, brandy, or even tequila. One of which was from Africa's only commercial distillery, Bain's. My husband ordered the Japanese flight which Tumo had great notes and insights on. It was so interesting picking his brain, very educational too. As a part of his job he's been to multiple distilleries and definitely knows his stuff. We got there early enough to snag two stolls. There were other couples there at the time and Tumo easily balanced his time between us, was attentive, and kept our waters refilled. It's a cozy space that could get crowded easily. The right had a couple of stools anchored by the counter. While the left is standing only. You can tell a lot of thought has been put into everything, all the wood, the decor in the bathroom, the mini barrel lights on the counter, the lighting to highlight the bottles.. My only complaint I have is the width of the counter. It's the mother-loving Halle Berry meets Jessica Alba meets Grace Kelly of whiskey bars, it's so freakin' beautiful. Every time I show friends photos I took, they ask me if I did anything to enhance the photos. Nuh uh, mama don't play that way, son. That's all 100% natural beauty. And if you didn't have enough reasons to hate Ms. Whiskey Bar NYC even more, here's the thing: She's got substance!
