Death & Co is truly a joy for anyone who appreciates a good cocktail. Located in EV, it can be easy to miss as it is a dark exterior with no windows. My boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary so we got a reservation, and we had a great time. Service here was absolutely wonderful. We first got their Golden Cobra and their Shinebox. The Golden Cobra was so good. A hint of coffee, passionfruit, and bitters made the cocktail so enjoyable. Their Shinebox ended up being a lot stronger than I expected and so I kindly asked our amazing server if I could get a different one. He ended up surprising me with their Rosalie. Absolutely amazing. The bar also celebrated our anniversary with us by writing us a lovely card and giving celebratory champagne. Loved the ambiance here, stellar service, and absolutely phenomenal drinks. read more

I'd heard great things about this place, so I was happy to finally snag a reservation here. Death & Co give speakeasy vibes, it's extremely low-lit and pretty romantic. Their cocktail menu reads like more of a magazine than a menu, with lots of descriptions on all the cocktails they offer. I went with the "Crowd Work" cocktail, because I love melon and am a sucker for a cocktail with egg whites. It was tasty and well made, came out looking like a work of art. Service here was a bit hard to come by, which was surprising because the bar was half empty. It felt as if they didn't really want us there, and I struggled to be able to order another cocktail (I just went with a dirty martini, which was the right amount of dirty). We waited many hours to get in on valentines weekend after their system crashed. The bartenders were super nice after all that which was appreciated. Loved the atmosphere and service. However I will say that the drinks weren't quite as creative as I would've hoped. We went to the death and co in Denver and weren't impressed. We made a reservation on a rainy Saturday. The table was for two hours. It seemed like there was a wait for walk-ins. There's a wide selection of cocktails that are on the pricier end. I got the Masking Anna with cold brew, but interestingly it was clear in color. I preferred the other drinks like Leche del Tigre. Their cookies were actually very tasty. I rarely review a place twice. In fact, this may be my second time. However, certain experiences deserve a new review. Either a new visit has drastically changed your opinion or you're just amazed at the consistency. Besides, the fact that this place doesn't have a 5 star average is shocking. I can only imagine it's because of one of 3 reasons: (a) price, which you should know before coming in, (b) limited space, which is fair-you are on top of other people-or (c) wait, but you're in a speakeasy-drinks take time. Be patient. Anyway, solo again sitting at the bar. I will admit service was a bit slower than usual as the bartender kept getting caught in conversation. I wasn't feeling anything on the menu, so asked him to make me a whiskey, spirit forward, drink that wasn't on the menu, and what he came up with was St George and the Dragon. Side note, any whiskey drink with St George in the name is going to be good. This is the third such drink I've had. One I don't remember and the other is a single malt whiskey called Baller by Saint George Distillery. Amazing whiskey. Anyway, this did not have that whiskey in it, but it was redbreast 12 year, a peaty scotch, Benedictine and absinthe. Strong, and will knock you on your a$$, but this bartender is talented and it was balanced and fantastic. Once I polished that off, I went with a basic old fashioned. They use Elijah Craig small batch as their standard OF whiskey, and frankly, I would have thought I'd be disappointed as I don't care for Elijah Craig. But when I say this was a perfect old fashioned, it was absolutely perfect. Balanced, spirit forward, not too sweet or bitter. It was flawless. Bartenders name is Kyler. Yes, Tyler but with a "k". If you're judging a book by its cover, you would think he doesn't belong. Mullet, I think red hair, but too dark in here to tell, and a beard. He also has a feminine voice-and I am not judging, just describing the opposite of what I picture when I think or speakeasies I've been to. But, he belongs in competitions. An amazing bartender. I will continue to love this place. I have only ever repeated a few places in NYC. One was a pizza place in little Italy that I went to a dozen times before covid put them out of business. We had Death & Co on our list for our recent trip to NYC. We were seated at the bar, which makes for optimal drink mixing action. The menu is unique, and as someone who is pretty basic with their drinks, I told the bartender what I like and was in the mood for, and he made a drink for me based on that info. I had 2 - 1 was on their current menu (First Time Listener) and 1 was from their winter menu (I can't remember the name). Both were excellent. We also had the shishito peppers, which was a great appetizer. Pro tip: Make a reservation. read more

Death & Co is one of the coolest cocktail experiences you can find. Although there are now additional locations in Denver, LA and DC, the New York location in the East Village is like going to church for cocktail enthusiasts. The space is very New York. It's dark, quaint and dripping with cocktail cool. Don't be intimidated by their prowess of winning best cocktail bar in the world in 2010 because the bartenders are welcoming and friendly. D&C is known for their cocktail books and their first release is the cocktail bible. At least it is to me and my cocktail friends (photo #9). What's amazing about their original book is it educates you on how to build a bar and construct a proper well-balanced recipe. It includes hundreds of recipes that range from simple to complex. It creates a roadmap so anyone can make amazing cocktails if you simply buy the ingredients and follow the recipes. The bartenders are true craftsman. Watching them work is like watching an exceptional athlete perform at the highest level. Since the cocktail menu is vast, it's incredible to watch them make complex recipes by memory that have between 3 and 7 different ingredients. It takes amazing talent to hold two different sized jiggers in between your fingers on one hand in order to pour different measurements while pulling from what seems like hundreds of bottles meticulously organized throughout the bar space. I know I'm a cocktail geek, but it's very fun to watch. Most of the syrups, tinctures, bitters and some common liqueurs are stored in smaller clear, unmarked bottles. It's impressive to watch how dialed in they are. My first cocktail (photo #3) was Sister Midnight. It's a deliciously boozy rum cocktail that explodes with flavor because of the rum combinations coupled with yellow chartreuse and spiced pear. My second (photo #8) was Tripwire. It's another explosive recipe combining scotch, rum, pineapple and mole. It was amazing. If you haven't been, you need to make the effort to check out D&C next time you're in NYC. Maybe don't read this review if you don't want to hear about a cocktail bar from the perspective of a non-drinker. That said, I thought this was a cool place. Twenty dollars is a lot to pay for a mocktail, but the one I got was really good. It was the "Cabana Kid" and it felt like a true gourmet cocktail experience as much as a teetotaler can expect. My friends, one of whom has worked as a bartender in St Paul and has been required to study Death & Co's handbook, really liked their for-real cocktails. She got the Perfect Crime and commented that she wishes she could drink one every day. Meanwhile, I hooked myself up with a dessert cookie that was fresh and came with cold milk for dipping or sipping. They go hard on atmosphere here. It's windowless and completely candlelit. Notwithstanding some other reviews here, it wasn't overly busy when we came in at dusk on a Thursday night in April. It seems like the employees take pride in the reputation that's unfolding here; they were serious and knowledgeable. Not really a fan of this place--definitely overhyped. It's always packed, and there's always a wait. My husband and I came on a cold Thursday night in January, and even then, we had to wait 30 minutes just to grab a seat at the bar. The bartenders were nice enough, but there's this intimidating vibe, like they're annoyed with everyone, which wasn't super welcoming. The menu is huge with lots of unique drinks, but wow, the prices are insane. Most of the cocktails are $23-25, but be careful because some of the fancier options can go up to $45--yikes. The drinks themselves are pretty underwhelming. A lot of them tasted more like juice or barely-alcoholic versions of familiar flavors. For what they cost, I expected so much more. Honestly, there are way better bars in NYC where you can get amazing drinks for $19-20, and they're way more worth it than this spot. read more

This bar may be the best in the world! Yes I said it! My fiance and I went here one weekend. I had purchased one of their books in which I have mad many tasteful cocktails and it inspired us to experience the source of their genius. The bar is located discreetly. If there wasn't a staff member outside you could easily pass it. This isn't a negative remark. It makes fits the theme of their bar. Death and co is almost a speakeasy. It is elegant, dark inside, and unapologetic. One inside you feel as though you are in a secret lounge reserved for cocktail lovers. I was expecting a lot from this bar and they delivered! All of the cocktails were expertly crafted and I really do mean "expertly" in every sense of the word. The bartenders here are extremely knowledgeable. If all the cocktails we had, and we had many, my favorite was one in which i challenged the bartender. I ordered a lamb burger which was great and I had already drank and old fashioned so I wanted to try a daiquiri. Knowing the flavor profile of each of these two items, I thought they would clash but the bartenders assured me he would make something that accompanied the lamb well. The bartenders assured took some time to think about how he would create an accompaniment to my lamb in the form of a daiquiri. I was skeptical but when I was served my drink as I was eating the lamb burger, what he concocted was nothing short of genius. A daiquiri is normally acidic and sweet but this one was earthy and made the perfect drink pair to my lamb while staying true to the way a daiquiri is made. Amazing place to grab a couple of drinks. My friends and I walked into Death and Co on a Saturday night around 1:30am. We knew that we'd most likely need reservations and were not sure what to expect but we were lucky and they seated us in a booth immediately even though they close at 2am. This bar has a really nice, timeless yet mysterious ambiance.... A dimly lit room with small chandeliers, dark wood furniture, dark marble counters, and a varied selection of alcohol on display behind the bar-- it had immaculate speakeasy vibes. Since they were about to close, service was very quick! Our waiter brought an extensive menu of drinks and I liked how they were organized by "richness", starting off with lighter, and more refreshing drinks, progressing up levels of decadence and richer body drinks. All of us got different cocktails including: Lonesome Dove, Naked and Famous, Check Hook, and the Sneaker Hedge Edgy. The drinks came out in less than 10 min. Everyone was very happy with their cocktails. I had the Lonesome Dove which I loved-- I am a huge fan of mezcal drinks and this was perfect (especially after already having a few drinks that night). The drink was light and refreshing, had a subtle earthy smokiness to it but was balanced out by citrus elements. This was probably one of the most complex yet well balanced drinks I have had. The prices are a little higher than your regular cocktail bar but I think they are justified by the evidently high quality ingredients that they use for their cocktails as well as their nice intimate ambiance. I definitely do not think this is a place I could afford to frequent but agree it is worth experiencing once in your lifetime! Headed over to Death & Co for our last night in New York. Arriving at around 7:30 we were seated immediately in a cozy booth toward the back. Our server, James, was very friendly and knowledgeable about the extensive menu. I started off with the Beyonder which tastes like a Negroni and a black Manhattan had a baby, in the best way. Smooth and boozy with a little bitterness on the end. My SIL liked her Paradise Lost, which was citrusy and refreshing with a strong flavor of green chili at the end. We really enjoyed the fried chicken, chips and dip, and bruschetta with butter beans. The fried chicken was moist and well seasoned. It comes out as boneless chicken strips. The butter beans on the bruschetta were firm and tangy with vinegar, which balanced out the bread. I would skip the crudo. It was a bland with a strong fishy taste. Can't wait to come back and try more drinks on the menu! We were able to get $50 off our bill using a gift certificate via the inKind app. read more

"Top 50 World Bars", "Best Bar in NYC", blah blah, more blah, blah. When I finally got a chance to try it, it was just okay. Don't get me wrong. The drinks were solid. Except there weren't a lot of unique options. My partner and I ordered off the holiday menu which featured the most unique sounding cocktails out of the options available. The La Chingona was a unique spin on a hot toddy and the other cocktail which I forgot the name of was forgettable. The ambiance is decent but the whole experience seemed rushed from the moment you get your name taken at the door. They constantly remind you that you're only allowed 90 minutes at the bar, the bouncer is rude, and the bartender is entertaining but in a performative rather than genuine way. But what do you expect from a popular bar in Manhattan? Anything with a remotely good reputation is always flooded with people. For a 45 minute wait, and a 90 minute seating limit, the hassle isn't worth the reward. You can get better cocktails in the area for less. read more

Oh, a bucket list bar for sure. Death and co was at the top of my list in terms of must visit spots for my trip. After all, I own all of their books because they are so amazing. In any case, Death and co was quite the spectacle. Dimly lit. Intimate. Lively. You step inside and take a time machine 100 years ago to a prohibitionist style bar. The vibes are insane. The interior is crafted beautifully. The bar? Ornate. I grabbed 2 drinks: moonshooters (house special) and a paper plane (had to get a modern classic). The moon shooters was great. It's a tiki-esque cocktail that is incredibly balanced. A little bit funky with the cachaca. I am on a tiki kick and I loved the creative approach to a tiki drink while maintaining the essence of a minimalist, classic approach and presentation. Obviously, the paper plane was great. A modern classic with some amazing, robust flavor. The bartender was awesome. He was dishing drinks on my half of the bar with ease. The security and hostess were both wonderful and very welcoming! But unfortunately service and drinks were ok. The service was extremely slow, we were told the table would be available for 2hrs which is ample time but our order took almost 35 min for 2 drinks it kind of ruined the experience for us and the drinks were just average. I've been to the Death & Co in Los Angeles so I was curious to try the NY location, the original! This place seems quite busy, there was a waiting list so we put our names in and got a text about an hour later. It's just as dark as the LA location haha. Drink menu is a book organized from light and fruity drinks to ones that are boozier. I ended up getting a cocktail that I didn't love and they replaced it for me which was nice. I believe I ended up with Foxglove which I enjoyed. I found the staff and the air of the place to be a tad pretentious, like they know they're the best cocktail bar. Cocktails are pricey.
