It was the perfect place to enjoy the Drake, their take on a Manhattan - Drake's Few whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters. Love the inclusion of a solid local whiskey. Also on the menu is bookbinder soup, a delicacy from a bygone era. Love how they also provide a small vial of the sherry that you can add on your own. Having lived in Chicago for almost a decade, it's fun to still be able to find places you've always meant to get to but somehow never did. A drink at The Drake has been on my list probably since seeing "Risky Business," so it was a treat to finally get there. The hotel itself is gorgeous, and stepping into this Prohibition-era bar is indeed like stepping back in time (until you get to the TVs that is), from the decor to Bob the bartender who has been there for 31+ years. Service is what it is, but there is an interesting, immediate familiarity between staff and patrons, many of whom are locals. That said, it's nothing particularly extraordinary, in fact it's probably overpriced. The mixed drinks are generous in their alcohol content, though it's mostly all well spirits. The wine pours are generous as well. The food looked pretty good, the gentleman next to me was raving about his crab cake. In the end, I feel like this is a spot everyone should come to once, particularly in this area during the holidays. It's a small glimpse of an old Chicago that is few and far between, and a worthwhile stop for an hour long nostalgia trip. read more

Staying at The Drake and this restaurant is conveniently located inside. We chose to grab a late dinner here one night and it was easy to get a table for 5 without waiting. We were immediately helped and well tended to throughout the meal. I opted to try the Cran Sparkle and it was delicious. I ordered the shrimp cocktail to start and couldn't believe how big the shrimp are. Everyone at my table enjoyed. For my entree, I ordered the beet salad and added grilled chicken. It was SO yummy. A HUGE salad. I couldn't finish it. My nieces ordered from the kids menu and loved the hot chocolate. They provide a carafe of additional hot chocolate to go with the first pour, so my nieces were happy filling their mugs throughout the meal. Feels like it's always 9pm. If there were windows, I don't remember them. Jimmy makes the best classic martini in Chicago. The Gold Coast is basically an old fashioned and it's a good one. We were there on a late Saturday afternoon after shopping and having a staycation kind of day. Casual, comfortable, not too crowded. I don't know about ordering a full meal here, but you'll want appetizers to soak up some of that liquor. You should not plan to drive anywhere after your visit. If you get the executive pour martini, think twice about walking anywhere. Fries are excellent. Mozzarella sticks are not the usual fair, and nicely done. read more

I want to start by saying I almost never leave 1 star reviews. I worked in restaurants for a long time and try really hard to look for the positives when I go out. However, sometimes there any. My family and I were just wrapping up our annual holiday trip to The Drake (we've been coming for 15 years). I had a short window while my husband got a car and a hungry kid. Coq D'or was the only open restaurant at The Drake at the time so we went there. We waited for almost 15 minutes for our server(I had to ask 2 different staff members to get her). Someone brought us waters in the meantime and I saw other servers look at us so we didn't exactly sneak in. I ordered us a grilled cheese to share when our server finally showed up and kept us with waters, not knowing how long the food would take and when my husband would be back to pick us up. Our sandwich came out fairly quickly, but was, unfortunately, the worst grilled cheese I've ever had. When I got our check, I noticed that she'd brought us a children's grilled cheese (I didn't know this was an option as I'd looked up the menu on line while waiting). It's possible that the food was so bad because it was from the children's menu- I've noticed since having kids that some restaurants serve their trash food to kids. We were starving and our server never checked back and I didn't want to drag my son and stroller and infant through the bar looking for her. I left her a note on the back of the credit card statement (with a 20% tip), which I've posted along with my review. Although from how I observed other tables were treated, ours was an isolated experience, I will never eat in this restaurant again and recommend others think twice before doing so as there are many other options in the area. read more

Service was hard to describe. We had our drinks on the table and a man came by and are you all done can I take these. We had not received our food. One of our orders was 1/2 grilled cheese and tomato soup. We were told that it was a tomato bisque. When it arrived it was tomato sauce not soup. Cool little place at the bottom of The Drake hotel with an old school feel and plenty of history. The service is pretty solid, but for such a neat bar, the drinks were definitely a bit underwhelming. While there is definitely something to sticking with the classics, when the ice waters down your Old Fashioned, it takes away from the end result dramatically. The shrimp cocktail was awesome. One of the best cocktail sauces I've had outside of St. Elmo's in Indianapolis. As for the well-known Bookbinder Soup, it wasn't anything great. Contrary to some of my fellow Yelpers I absolutely LOVE the decor at Cow D'Or!!! I LOVE the history you can see and feel as soon as you go in! Service is absolutely fantastic! I was seated right away and water also came right in. Reason for my 3 star review is exclusively the food I ate. I ordered the lobster roll and the bread was cold and the lobster had no seasoning. It was a good amount of lobster, but I had several pieces of shells in my roll. And that is just not acceptable from any restaurant, but particularly not from the restaurant at The Drake. I will definitely come back because of the ambience and the staff, but will be ordering something else. read more

I was staying at The Drake and decided to check out their evening dining option. I came in around 9:45 PM on a Monday and this place exuded a vibrant energy (even though the lighting is dim). The whole bar was almost completely full and the restaurant still pretty packed but we were seated within minutes. Their drinks are excellent and definitely boozy, everyone in there seemed to be having a great time. I appreciated the vegetarian option for their burger as well as other vegetarian options listed on the menu. Their fries were also very crispy and hot. I've always considered The Drake to be the epitome of the classic Chicago hotel, and I've always found the Coq D'or a classy throwback bar. We popped in for a late dinner last night (and to watch the Bears Hall of Fame game, which they quickly put on the television for us), and the experience was incredibly memorable. The utterly professional service by Jimmy and Polo is very inviting and charming, and they sold us on sampling a rye and a gin made specifically for The Drake. Both were excellent. We shared fish & chips and a cheeseburger, and you would be hard pressed to find better anywhere else. This is a fantastic place, and I can't speak highly enough about it. Been wanting to come here for the longest and we finally made it. We had a fantastic experience. Not sure if it's always self-seating, but this time it was and we grabbed the last table available. And side note, the chairs are so comfortable. You immediately get a sense of how historic this building is which, I love. Definitely made me wonder about who all has been here over the years. Not sure if I would call this a "hidden gem" but I don't really ever here anyone I know talking about coming here. Our server was Elvis and he was just great! Well versed about all aspects of the menu and was very prompt. We settled on trying the clam chowder and the soft pretzel. If this was all I had I would be coming back to try the rest of the menu. The clam chowder had the most clams I've ever seen in a soup at a restaurant. The pretzel was HUGE and so, so soft. The beer cheese and mustard were also super tasty. For drinks we got the Gold Coast which is their old fashioned and the Cranapple Sparkle. This old fashioned may have moved into my top 5. It also helps that they serve it with 3 cherries. we just moved across the street and have come in two or three times and we're delighted until the last visit. Our server was a female - I don't know her name and the restaurant was not very crowded. However, there were five of us and we waited and waited and waited for her to take our order. Some of us ordered bookbinder soup and others had a more substantial entrée, the soup was brought, and because we didn't want to drink it cold we started eating before the others were served their food. We had to wait so long for the second round of food that we had finished our soups and were sitting and sitting and waiting for the rest of food to be delivered after we finished our friends were going to visit our apartment across the street, but we didn't have time because it took forever in a day to get the bill. I'm a member of yelp and I'm very conscientious about reviews so rather than right one. I called the Drake hotel and left a message for someone to call me back about our unhappiness with the entire experience. Please also note that we know that homemade rolls are usually served with the soup and we only received crackers. My husband also had to ask for ketchup for his french fries and also had to ask twice for that. Our usual server is Elvis, who is great but we don't know what happened on the day that we went and lack of responsiveness in getting back to us shows no interest in who is more important - - - i'd love to have a response from someone about our recent experience because we'd really like to come back, but you have to pay more attention to your customers. Normally, we are treated to great waitstaff, like Christina, who go out of their way to get the customers what they want, which befits a restaurant at Chicago's Drake Hotel! Unfortunately, I returned last night w a friend and was heartily disappointed about the passive-aggressive service offered by José, a waiter who offered a dismissive and unhelpful attitude. He Aggressively denied that I could get a drink (Honey Trap) that had just been taken off the menu last week. Fact is, Christina made that happen for me 2 nights before at the bar! José also wanted to shut us down and bring the check without offering to let us see the dessert menu. We had to ask for it. Scott, the manager, sets a very high standard for service. He remembers us from prior visits. He has an excellent sense of humor and he really shows genuine care for customers.
