The last few times my dinner was sub par. Disappointing since it has been great prior. I had liver and onions which was not cooked well. Raw batter on the pieces and poorly plated. It looked like a child had dished it up. A tale of two Gables. Went to this establishment two days in a row for lunch. Wednesday I ordered a turkey breast sandwich that was fresh from the bread to the lettuce and a huge portion of turkey. I exist because of Coral Gables. My mother and father were both there to listen to music in the 60's. My Mom Olga was dating Richard Pritzker. My father Daryl invited them to a party at my Grandparents Home that night. After that night they got together. They were married 1968-2000. I was their 1st born in 1974. My brother was born in 1982. We ate quite frequently at Coral Gables thoughout my childhood. After that I continued to eat there with my husband and my 2 children. They even hosted a private room for me. I suffer from a rare incurable brain disease, Moyamoya. It was so nice to have other Moyamoya patients and family together in a private space. The food is always fresh and delicious. Took my wife in for breakfast. Ordered biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash and eggs. The biscuits are like rocks, the gravy is a paste. They served the eggs and hash with a side of fried potatoes along with a combination of blueberries that should have went into someone else 's pancakes. While searching for a new breakfast spot to try this morning, I stumbled upon Coral Gables. This was my first time dining here and my boyfriend and I both tried the breakfast buffet. We found the service to be good and our overall experience to be about average. The price was fair, and the food was about what you would expect to see on a breakfast buffet. Not bad if you are in a hurry as they have ample seating and kept the buffet stocked. Pros: The fruit was incredibly fresh, the toast was delicious and the bacon was cooked well. We had breakfast here. Service was very slow. When the food came, I was given an incorrect omelette. We I told the manager and the waitress, the manager said, "It will be 20 minutes if you want the correct omelette the kitchen is way backed up." I ate the food in front of me, but WTF! Let's start with the good. The history of Coral Gables is amazing. All the big bands and top acts stopped by from the 30's to the 60's. MSU students famously came here to drink when EL was dry. There are stories about the great 60's football players like Bubba Smith coming to drink with teammates and girlfriends. Fast forward to today and this place is God's waiting room. The food was clearly made in house but my hot turkey sandwich and my wife's moussaka appeared to be microwaved as there were hot and cold spots in each. There really is potential at Coral Gables. They could get rid of half their menu items and no one would notice. Keep the waitstaff and update the menu and this place could be something again. read more

Just typical East Lansing fare. Not good, not hideous. Really good Manhattan to start, which was encouraging. My wife's wine was pretty bad. Discouraging. I ordered a Greek salad but got a house salad, which is fine. It was good. My wife's Caesar salad was bad. We both ordered chicken parm. Easy comfort food that should be hot and bubbling and delightful to eat. Chicken was juicy enough, but the pasta was lukewarm and hard, the sauce tasted like green peppers, and the cheese on top was barely melted. Kids' pizza was slightly undercooked. The locals fill this popular restaurant. I like coming here because it is one of the few places with a traditional all you can eat salad bar. The menu offers lots of diverse options from burgers to Greek and Italian food. The dining rooms are not fancy, in fact dated in a comforting sort of way. They have a full service bar with lots of tvs tuned into sports, especially Michigan State. We have never had to wait for a table because of the expansive set of dining rooms. The service is friendly. We ordered salad bar and the spinach lasagna roll. The salad bar is no-frill but fresh. Romaine lettuce, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers cheddar cheese, beets, bacon, sunflowers seeds and a number of other options to fill your plate for only $6.95. The had about 10 dressing options including an interesting garlic dressing. Their signature toasted Italian bread is included with both meals. The generous portion of spinach lasagna is served baked in a bowl with lightly browned mozzarella on top. The lasagna is piping hot with a tasty tomato sauce and lots of fresh spinach. You can tell the lasagna is freshly prepared. The meal is very filling and a great deal. They offer a kid's meal and provide the little tikes with crayons and a colorable menus. I went to Coral Gables for breakfast. It was Sunday so the restaurant was quite busy with the church crowd. The menu was limited because they had a breakfast buffet. I know, I know, buffets are supposed to be gross, the food cold, etc...but seriously, they do a decent job. They had a ton of fresh fruit and juice, scrambled eggs (both regular and egg beaters), bacon, sausage, toast in the french and normal varieties, pancakes, corn-beef hash, biscuits and gravy, really good crispy hash browns, doughnuts, and whole bunch of breakfast pastries. It was pretty much endless. The buffet cost about $9 which is my only gripe. Though the food was good, $9 seems like a steep price for a breakfast buffet. And sure, Sam M. called them out- this place is littered with baby boomers and the greatest generation. They flock to this place like it's a Buick dealership, but you know what, overhearing their conversations about church gossip and wool sweaters superiority to cotton sweaters is just part of the experience at Coral Gables. Really one of my favorite places for breakfast. They don't get a ton of business since IHOP is RIGHT across the street. The morning crowd is a bit on the older side, not a lot of students or 20 somethings frequenting. It has a nice quiet atmosphere and the service is always top notch. I typically order the french toast and american fries and absolutely love them every time. They do have a buffet on Sunday, I've always been a bit "so so" with the buffet. The food can be a little cold by the time you get to it, so I usually will still order my usual even when visiting on a Sunday. Two thumbs up, give it a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

The layout & set up is really nice; lots of Michigan State & Michigan Sports memorabilia hanging on my the walls. The burger I had was very good, I liked how the toppings were big & loaded, the fries were good as well. I ordered a well done cheeseburger I received a rare cheeseburger. The rest of our table all received there food as ordered. The waitress was very apologetic and took it back to the kitchen. The next burger was smaller and even more rare. The bar was very slow and didn't taste any alcohol. It is a restaurant that has a long history in Saugatuck but we should have kept walking. In the 20+ years I lived in Lansing area I had never purposely visited Coral Gables. I had heard about it untold times from other people. My Sis was in town and wanted to go there. So the whole family packed into our cars and we went. My first impression was Oh Lord its all Old People. 95% of the Patrons there seemed to be Senior Citizens. The Host seated us in the back. In the back was the bar and a dance floor area it looked like and also various tables with large screen tv's showing various sports games. Apparently the place has history and has been around forever. I learned it was essentially Italian & Greek American fare. Which is fine by me. As I live in Detroit I am used to dozens of Greek diners. The menu was quite extensive. There were many items which could appeal to many different palates. That is what struck me 1st and made me like the place right off. There was literally something for everyone... My Wife and I both had the Chicken Parmesan, my Mom had some Swiss Steak dinner, my Dad had some Cold Meatloaf platter, and my Sis ate some Personal mini Pizza. There's a small but decently spec'd Salad Bar in the middle dining room. Also cold and hot breads too. The prices all very reasonable. My Mom had told us the Chicken Parmesan was one of her favorites as CG's does not bread the Chicken Filet. I honestly was not paying attention to my sis or parents food, but My Chicken Parmesan was amazing!... It was One chicken breast with a ton of melted cheese. Side of Spaghetti with the freshest and slightly spicey tasting Marinara sauce. It was a perfect portion for me. After eating a huge salad, garlic bread and the Chick Parm I was stuffed. I will definitely make a trip back there again Either with just my wife or with also with my parents again. The Service was also spot on. I can't recall a single problem with anything there. First Impressions - I thought it was Half Old People Retirement Home Cooking and Half Ancient Sports Bar & Grille... It was Neither... it was just Good Classic Food. read more

There is absolutely nothing interesting about Coral Gables. No one is taking notes on José Andrés here. No one is discussing this in the Chowhound forums. Coral Gables is important to the history of my home town. This restaurant/bar/banquet hall has been there since dinosaurs roamed the earth. When my parents were matriculating at State, East Lansing was a dry town. Coral Gables, being oh, about 20 feet outside city limits was the nearest watering hole, and by all accounts, it was the place (the only place) to be. Times have changed. Coral Gables is a bit of an old folks home now. However, the place is as consistent and reliable as the Northern Star. You can be assured of a pleasant traditional American meal. The owner and his family are ever present keeping a close eye on the family business. Good on 'em. The best bet for sure is the Sunday brunch buffet. Pleasant. Very family friendly. read more

This is a biased review as I've had some of my best times at this restaurant, including my first dance, my introduction to live jazz, and the budding of one of my most meaningful friendships. That should give you an idea of the diversity of the restaurant's offerings, which include an intimate porch area, a large old-style dining room, a private group dining room, a swanky bar, an event hall, and a small arcade (not sure if these are all still available). The Gables has an important place not only in my heart but also in local history (look it up if you care). Also, its constancy over the years adds to the calming atmosphere. No one in the main dining area was under 60 years of age. The food was decent, and the service was good, too. The atmosphere wasn't my thing, because I'm not over 60 years old. Would I go here again? No, but that has nothing to do with the food or the service. Both were great. We visited Coral Gables on mother's day on the recommendation of a friend. We were told everything on the menu is good, they have a wide range of food, and they can accommodate a large group like ours. The recommendation was correct about having a wide range of food and accommodations for large groups. They have everything from sandwiches and wraps to seafood to steak to Greek and Italian choices. They also have a large side room for groups as well as enough space in the back to host at least four groups of 16. The desserts were very good as most, if not all, of their desserts are made fresh. The entrees, however, were all very bland. Each member of our party commented on the lack of flavor. At the prices they charge for their entrees I expected much more distinguishable flavor. I would also expect a higher level of service, yet we constantly had to ask for refills on beverages. While Coral Gables does have some appeal for larger groups and for desserts, I believe you can find places that have better lunch and dinner options at more affordable price, especially in an area like Lansing. read more

This place was a hoppin' joint in it's heyday! Even Chubby Checker played there, along with many others. Zoom into last night...we hadn't been there in many years, so said 'why not'? I'll tell you why not. They pride themselves on building their business as Il Forno (Italian for "the oven")...apparently they forgot to turn Il Forno on! We ordered pizza, well done, & it came out 12 minutes later. My first bite had refrigerator COLD green peppers, although the crust was almost hot. Not sure what the hell they're doing in the kitchen but this is no way to serve pizza!!! The only patrons there were an older crowd & I overheard another table complain to their server about something not cooked. We did take our pizza home & recooked at 400* for 20 min & it was all bubbly & pretty good...the way it should have been in the first place!! We had dinner last night about 8:00. It took about 45minutes to get out food. We asked the water a couple of times to check. I guess he made a mistake in ordering. The good wasn't very good. !y spinach pie was dry and over cooked. The rice was dry with no flavor. Other guest had lasagna which was dry and seemed to warmed over. My friend and I went for breakfast on Sunday. The restaurant is giant in size and was very full. We were seated immediately though on our way out there seemed to be a wait. It was an older crowd not too many undergrads. They have a breakfast buffet but my friend and I both opted to order off the menu. Not the biggest breakfast menu. I got the Eggs Benedict. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The entire plate was covered in hollandaise sauce. I was surprised it wasn't running off the plate. Not a delicate presentation at all. Their OJ was very mediocre.
