Of course you can have a book shipped from any OC library to one close to you but I was curious about the Tustin library, never having been there. I walked in and my first impression - it's HUGE. An enormous lobby with a large children's section to the right and a larger adult area to the left. The library was neat and well organized - I found the book within a minute. So I browsed around a bit and ended up getting a couple others too. On my way to check out my books I passed a classroom full of computers, and it appeared as though some sort of class had just adjourned. Other reviews mention it is a bit noisy here but I honestly didn't experience that on a weekday afternoon. Since I did self-checkout, I didn't interact with any of the librarians so I was unable to impress them with riveting conversation about the Dewey Decimal System.

when the irvine libraries split from the ocpl system, i ended up switching over to tustin since…read moreit's the closest location to me now. the location itself is really nice. it's in the civic center, so you've got the community center and police department right there, and there are a bunch of food and drink spots across the street if you want to grab something before or after. there's plenty of parking outside, but even then on busy days it can get full really fast. there are also bathrooms available but you need to ask the library for the code to access, as i believe it changes daily. they also have a security guard who stands by the door. inside, the library is super spacious, but it's not the quietest. i wouldn't really recommend it as a study or focus spot if that's what you're looking for since it can get pretty loud, especially with kids. there is a separate quiet room, but it seems more geared toward teens. i do wish the books were organized a little better. sometimes it feels like a maze trying to find something, especially not knowing if it'll be in teen/young adult or general fiction. i'm also not the biggest fan of how the manga is set up since it's split into two different areas and i'm not really sure why. that said, the staff has always been super friendly and helpful. i also love that they have a rotating table of themed recommendations. right now it's ren faire reads, but they've done things like blind date with a book for valentine's and other themed picks based on different time periods too. overall, it's a very nice facility with a wide selection of books, from new releases, manga, kids and teens books, etc.

And a super cute little bookstore connected to the library just to the right down a few steps, very dog, friendly extremely people friendly, and the price of the books are extraordinarily affordable. I found several. Some of them are for me and a few for friends that I know will appreciate the good reads.

You will probably not find a quieter place to study at UCI. Each floor is equipped with study tables and desks, for students and the casual reader alike. Computers are also available for those without laptops. From what I have seen, UCI updates these computers every few years, to keep up with technology advances that newer software demands. The library has several locations where you can fill up on water and use the restroom. But it is best to navigate the library yourself to find these locations, because sometimes it is easy to get lost. My favorite places to study are the fourth and fifth floor tables, across from the giant windows facing the trees and walkway. People don't usually talk, so you can enjoy some quietude on these floors. If you need to take a break from your studies or reading, take a walk outside and enjoy the architecture, or the sculptures outside depicting the life of intellectual labor. One thing to note is that due to the scandal Dr. Ayala was involved in, with regards to sexual harassment, UCI decided to remove his name from this library. For now, it is just called the "Science Library."

Their Friends of the Library section is decently stocked, but what sets this location apart is they also sell cards! Many occasions - holidays, get well soon, just because - it's really cute. A few other things that makes this library unique: 1) They have free seed packets for bee-friendly flowers; 2) There's a scavenger hunt for kids - if they find everything, they can pick a small item out of a container to take home; 3) They have a play kitchen and market and a few tables where kids can do different activities; 4) Their selection of audiobooks for both kids and adults is pretty impressive. They also have a monthly calendar, some newspapers, and brochures, along with staff recommendations and board games to check out. Very cool!

Having driven by it countless times but never having a reason to stop (because until recently I've worked nextdoor to a library) I finally decided to check them out. They have an abundance of parking. Inside, there are a few computers for patron usage, one of which I used to sign up for a library card. With a library card you can check out things from the library as well as have free online access to Overdrive and Hoopla for ebooks. Staff were very friendly and helpful in answering a couple questions I had. Shelves were well-labeled for their little collection of books, audio books & DVDs (yes, they still exist). The children's section had a few play areas amidst the bookshelves and seemed very inviting for a youngster. In fact all of the patrons I saw here were moms with kids. They seem to have a lot of programs for children. For families in the area this is a wonderful library.

The good: There is a HUGE selection of medical textbooks, journals, periodicals - as one would imagine. The staff here are friendly and warm. There are multiple study nooks scattered throughout the library space - with plenty of outlets as well. The bad: Internet is almost non-existent here. I tried the guest network, then swapped to my mobile hotspot device (literally a device that acts as a mobile router/modem), and then finally, my phone's data - and had trouble staying connected for longer than a few minutes. I later confirmed with the service desk clerk that this was normal - and that internet is spotty because of the building and nearby communications equipment. Parking - is not free here. You pay a nominal fee even if you get your pass validated. I mean this is generally a space for students, staff and faculty - so those groups likely have their own parking permit anyway. It's also closed on the weekends - which is usually the case for most libraries anyway, however, one would expect it to be open somewhat considering that it's on a hospital campus. There is a side room called the Research Lounge, containing two nap pods, computers, printers, chairs and a charging station - that was open 24/7 - you need a UCIMC badge to gain access. Note: The restrooms located next to this library require key access after 6pm.

Maybe it's just my phone provider (T mobile), but I had no phone service there. Even when linked to the free public wifi, I could not even browse the internet. Cons: *NO FREE PARKING. Unless you park at the mall adjacent to the hospital, you are most likely going to park in the parking lot structure. That means paying the fee. *COMPUTERS ARE FOR STUDENTS ONLY. At least at the time when I went there, I saw a sign that says computers are for UCI students/employees only and they will need to see UCI ID to verify that. *HIDDEN LOCATION. Most people won't even know that there is a library located in the hospital. It's awesome if you like peace and quiet, but could be better promoted to increase publicity.

Large section of children's books, a locked counter area with the gift and special books, and smaller sections for arts, biography, cooking and health, crafts, dictionaries and foreign language works, history, literature (classics in their own space), metaphysics, religion and spirituality, science, science-fiction, DVDs and CDs, ranging from $.50 or thereabouts to $5.00 or so (may be higher though I didn't personally see any which cost more than that). Pay by the bag (think grocery-store sized paper bag) at the counter, then go back outside and load up from any of the carts (*excluding the marked as no-go for bag sales). I found *so many* titles I've been looking for, as well as fantastic hardcover art books on Andrew Wyeth for $2 and $1 (inside). Most were in very good condition while some had torn dust jackets (not a big deal to me because all the spines are intact). My husband also branched out from his usual interests and ended up choosing an entire bag worth (normally he finds 3 decent tomes at *other thrift stores we visit). You can sign on to be a Friend ($15 individual, $20 family, progressively more) for a year, engendering perks, so consider joining! Or volunteering: their Tuesday person is moving on and they especially need help that day, though wouldn't turn you away for other days. Bring your cheery personality, your willingness to stock items, and love of reading. I love this place so much I'm prioritizing it as my go-to stop for books. Thank you!!
