My daughter has wanted to learn to surf since we moved here in June. I called many places in the more touristy areas like Mission Bay and they seamed alright but when I called Coronado Surf Academy I knew this was the right choice. Teevan was the one who answered the phone and was extremely friendly and very helpful. There was no BS over the phone just great help. I paid $80 forger first private lesson which was 1.5 hours almost all in the water. Tyler was her instructor and was great with her. She said it was her best birthday gift ever. What I like as a parent was the fact they took time to answer all my questions. I was ready to pay for another lesson right there but instead of being greedy they suggested she practice what she learned then come back for another lesson which would be $60. I also love where they teach, not many people and very easy to get I and out. Came back today to rent a board $20 for 4 hours and they had it waiting for her. Thanks guys! read more

I am so glad we found Coronado Surfing Academy. The instructor was excellent, kind, patient and just all around wonderful. My daughter was able to stand up on the board fairly quickly and the smile on her face was priceless. On top of that, she wanted to rent a board to surf one last time before heading home, we couldn't find anyone with a board and wetsuit because it was a couple of days after Labor Day. Someone from Coronado Surfing Academy met us with a board and a wetsuit so she could surf. I really didn't think their level of customer service existed anymore. I can't say enough good things about this place, they are truly a great company, every person I was in contact with was excellent. Great! I called last weekend to arrange for a surprise private surf lesson for my boyfriend for this weekend (Father's Day weekend); keep in mind I live in the Bay Area, and he lives locally. While arranging this I spoke with 2 gentlemen and they were both friendly, informational, and helped to make this an easy transaction for me. The lesson occurred this morning and the feed back was great! After the lesson my boyfriend called and said he had a great experience and, having surfed only (sort of) 5 times prior and one prior lesson in Costa Rica, he "finally GOT IT". The instructor that I had was cool. They try to keep it simple on instructions and let you do it on the beach before trying the water. Once in the water they do their best to walk you waste deep battling the waves and they slowly turn you around and let you know when you'll surf. After your lesson they give feedback and let you go. Overall, the instructors were great and their surf academy was great, and I'd recommend it to all ages and newbies or any other skill level. read more

Booked a lesson for me and my 8 yo daughter and 6 yo old son on a recent December day. They had two instructors to keep everyone busy and safe. The provided wetsuits made the cool water bearable. My 8 yo and I spent the entire time in the water while my son preferred to take breaks on the beach. The instructors were particularly great with the kids and everyone had a great time. We tripped upon this company as in Coronado for a few days and son really wanted to surf. I called them and from the moment I called I was impressed. Sarah answered the phone, and the owner, Tevan (spelling?) was awesome of outlining what to expect. We met on the beach and my son wanted a boy instructor, so we met Wade. Wade immediately interacted well with my son who is on the spectrum (I never said anything and wade immediately knew), they both left to the ocean after some instruction and my son (age 7, a day before he turned 8), was having a blast. My husband and I pulled up a seat on the beach and watched and took pictures. I would highly recommend this venue and if in San Diego again definitely will be back. I can't say enough good things about Coronado Surfing Academy. My husband and I scheduled a semi-private lesson together. Neither of us had ever surfed. Teevan was very accommodating when scheduling the lesson. He was responsive and professional, but also very laid back. Teevan was also our instructor, and he was an amazing teacher. He answered all our questions and shared so much extra info. He started with the basics, but as we progressed he taught us more advanced things. Decided to learn to surf and CSA made it simple. Took a group lesson for $60 and got lucky as there was only one other student. So we got plenty of attention from Emily, who had both of us up and surfing in less than an hour. Not sure what size they cap their group lessons at, but if you want to get plenty of instruction and assistance, I'd recommend spending the extra $20 for a private lesson. Teevan is very responsive to inquiries, and scheduling is a breeze. I rented a board and wetsuit from him a couple of times after the lesson, and he couldn't be easier to work with or more generous. I am already comfortable taking the drop and now looking to buy my first board. The only negative I could possibly come up with is that the gear does have a bit of wear and tear on it - but that's kind of to be expected from rental gear that is used to teach newbies to surf.
