We've ordered here twice in the last couple of months (just moved nearby). First time, I was surprised by how little meat was in our orders. We frequent both Costa Vida and Cafe Rio, and are very familiar with the food. Our second order today had, somehow, even smaller portions of meat, maybe two bites in an entire salad? Seems like if you want any meat at all, you're better off ordering a kids quesadilla with meat -- one of those had more than our two entrees combined. I ordered a chicken quesadilla. The tortilla and meat was put on the grill. And forgotten. The employee lifted the cover off - the chicken was in the middle of the tortilla. She added a little bit of cheese and folded it over. Whacked at it with a knife to cut it into four people. She took no care to spread out the chicken and so the two end pieces had no chicken and the middle two had too much. The chicken was hard and crunchy - overcooked. If she had only taken a little bit of care in making it but no she was too lazy. They weren't even busy. I love the decor when you walk in this place. Bright colors and fun designs. Like a cute surf shop but with food. They have TVs with surfing videos. Turquoise, yellows, orange. Fun, fun, fun. Order at the counter. Burritos, bowls, burgers. Go down the line and tell them the ingredients and when you get to the end you simply pay for your order and then find a seat. We have always been avid Cafe Rio customers, however, Cafe Rio's quality and cleanliness has degraded over the years while Costa Vida (no matter the location) is consistent in their quality and cleanliness. Because of this, we have now switched to being avid Costa Vida fans! It's nice to know that whenever I go to a Costa Vida, I can expect it to be clean, the food to be fresh, and the drinks to be stocked. We love their house-made lemonades and horchata. The only thing that we wish for is a less expensive kid option. I feel like $0.75 a $1.00 is a much more fair price for the tiny kid's al a carte cheese quesadilla rather than $1.49. I've been going to this location for the last couple of years and it's ALWAYS a pleasure. The service is quick, friendly and efficient. The food is DELICIOUS. I normally like Costa Vida and love their kids meal chicken quesadilla. It's just perfect when I'm not super hungry. Tonight I got dinner for my family and I got the kids chicken quesadilla. So we called Costa Vida catering and placed an order. They asked what time we wanted it delivered and for how many people. They had more options than other similar restaurants and were very friendly. The food showed up right on time and the delivery guy brought it all in and set it up in our kitchen ready to serve. He was very careful and made everything just right. Don't get the queso from this one it's super runny and has a weird sour taste to it. Also burritos are very hit or miss with mostly miss. I can only speak to going here in the evenings. Possibly could be because all the teenagers are working and they prolly could care less about the food they serve from what we've observed. So I tried this for the first time today, I got a grilled chicken burrito and tried their various sauces picking their spiciest one for my burrito. The chicken burrito has a interesting flavor since their spicy sauce has a sweet taste to it and their chicken almost has a teriyaki chicken flavor to it like Waba Grill. Costa Vida is pretty American with it's flavors and isn't a authentic Mexican restaurant by any stretch but that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable. I've loved Costa Vida since it's inception. It has always impressed me with the cleanliness of the staff. Like when you ask for gluten free, they ask "preference or allergy". If it's allergy, the employee will wash their hands and change their gloves. It's always been much cleaner than Cafe Rio. But it seems that they have fallen prey to greedy shrinkflation. The last three times we've gone there, the amount of meat we get on our salads is abysmal. We're talking about a 50 cent coin sized portion of pork and about 4-6 pieces of steak. If this was just one time, I'd chalk it up to the employee, but this seems to be pretty consistent, which makes me believe corporate or the franchise has told the employees to add less meat. The salad was delicious, but I just can't justify paying $8 for a small salad with so little meat. read more
