Stopped by Cottage House Restaurant in Cleveland and this place is exactly what you want if you're looking for a solid, no-frills Southern breakfast. First off, the setup is super easy. You walk in, grab a tray, and you've got options. You can go through the hot bar and get served right there, pay, and be on your way... or order off the menu, sit down, and they'll bring the food to you. Very simple and efficient. The inside is spacious with plenty of seating, and there's also outdoor seating if you want it. Parking is easy too, which is a big plus, especially compared to the chaos you'll run into closer to Helen. Food wise, I always judge breakfast spots by the chicken, egg, and cheese biscuit... and this one held up. The chicken was tender, the biscuit was soft and fresh, and overall it was a solid start. The surprise for me was the hashbrown casserole. It came out good, but once I added a little salt, the flavor really popped. Definitely worth getting. The pancakes were also done right... nice crispy edges with a soft, fluffy inside. That's exactly how pancakes should be. Menu wise, they've got everything you'd expect from a Southern breakfast spot... biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, country ham, pancakes, omelets, and even lunch style items like burgers and plate meals if you come later. They also have a Coca-Cola fountain, which is always a win. Service was friendly, especially for early morning, and the whole place just has that comfortable, old-school home cooking feel. The atmosphere is very poor. Everyone seems to be doing their own thing. Too many workers. A lot were just standing and looking around. A lot of flies. People DO NOT WANT flies landing on and around your food. Nothing kills the mood to relax and eat than a flie that keeps flying around and landing on your food. Great brunch after church. First time in here for a meal. Love the buffet style concept where you can be served fresh hot food all the time. Service is very efficient and spot on. Choices for Sunday brunch was very good ham,fried chicken, baked chicken, chicken tenders and I think pulled pork. Plenty of veggie options to choose from. Rolls or corn bread good options with your meal. One meat and two veggie options less than $10.00. I had the fried chicken, Mac &cheese and green beans. Chicken was excellent and very moist, M&C could have been cooked a little longer to melt the cheese more. Green Beans were okay did not jump out at me. My wife had the fried chicken also with mashed potatoes and collard greens. She loved all of it. Overall a very good meal and enjoyed the restaurant. They have standard menu for different days of the week. You can also order from the grill and have breakfast. Nice country feel in the restaurant enjoyed the way it is set up. For the life of me I can't figure out how this restaurant got a 4.5 rating. Two of us ate there today about 2:30 PM for the first time ever. The food sits in bins under warming lights for who knows how long and servers dish it onto plates for you. I had fried chicken, 2 legs, as they only have legs and breasts, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, cornbread and iced tea. The food was barely warm and the chicken was quite greasy with very little flavor. A good southern restaurant should have great iced tea, too, but again, not even close. We both declined dessert as it looked as if it had been sitting in those cases for several days. Also, no real butter to be found. Just that whipped spread that doesn't have a trace of milk or cream in it. No ambience inside, just several wooden tables everywhere and a few booths with torn seats and backs. The floor was pretty dirty and the whole place could benefit from a good cleaning. This is a first and last time for me as this restaurant does not even come close to real home cooked southern food. read more

Sorry, hate to be the one to do this but I am a foodie of sorts. I love southern cooking, cause I'm a true GA peach, but this just wasn't that great. I really wanted it to be. The only "fruit" in the fruit bowl was grapes. Eggs were just eggs. The hashbrowns were burnt on the bottom. I wish it was better. The staff was nice enough and the place was clean. If it was possible to give this place less than one star I would. Terrible. Food was terrible, dry, overall bad. You shouldn't expect too much for inexpensive food but you should expect more than what you're given here. Someone with me ordered Mac and cheese and they came out and took his back from him and said one of their coworkers said it tasted "funky" They said they'd bring him some from a new batch out, they never did. The pulled pork is literal baby food. Shouldn't even be called pulled pork here, maybe "blended pork". Overall not clean, tables dirty, only one bathroom stall for each gender and they can't even manage to keep that clean. Did I mention it smells like mildew and must inside too? Tried this place for the first time today. At first I was very hesitant from walking in and grabbing a tray school style. I was completely wrong because it was a blast going through the line and seeing all the different foods and veggies. The food I got was fried chicken, mashed potatoes and Mac n cheese. All of which were very very good. The mashed potatoes were not instant and the roll was so soft. However the only faults I found were was in the chicken and macaroni and cheese. Both were abit overcooked and dry. The noodles were very mush on the macaroni but was very flavorful. I'd definitely try this family style place to eat dinner with friends or family. read more

Called in a to go order well over an hour before closing time. Explicitly repeated that I needed white cream gravy on all orders of the mashed potatoes. One order had a small amount, and the other order had an indentation for gravy but NO gravy. Pinto beans tasted like someone dumped about 4 times as much salt as needed. Went inside to pick it up as the drive through was backed up. It was so cold inside from the drive through window being constantly open that I was glad that I was taking to go. We have been going to the Cottage House for years, but recently their food has left a lot to be desired. Yesterday we went with friends and my husband and I had fried flounder. It was not only cooked from frozen but was overcooked and had absolutely no flavor. The broccoli casserole was just not good. The best things I had were the blackeyed peas and the banana pudding. I have dined at Cottage House many times and now I return with friends and family for the wonderful dining experience. The staff are always polite, cheerful and courteous to me and everyone that I have taken as guests. The food is always very tasty and has the flavor of a home cooked meal that you can only get there at Cottage House. The have delicious fried or baked chicken, meatloaf, catfish, salmon patties, chicken livers, sliced ham, pot roast (+$3) and many scrumptious sides like squash casserole, broccoli casserole, Mac, green beans, and wonderful desserts each day. Their menu is not the same everyday so you better go online to check depending on which day you choose and Saturday they are closed take a break to rest and recharge I feel certain. The ambiance of the place is a cottage style dining room that holds many varieties of groups/parties and on nice days you can dine outside on the front porch. They also have a drive through window for breakfast, lunch and dinner so if you are in a rush it's easy to get it to go! It's a 'meat & 2/3' kind of place, but also has a menu--hot bar is open all day I think. Service is fast and friendly. Clean and tidy restaurant. They seem to do a good bit of drive thru also! We enjoyed our meals and will eat there again. read more

I've been here twice now. The Tuesday brisket biscuit is pretty good. I was in the drive thru at 9:50 am at the near end of breakfast service. Brisket was tasty but not as moist and tender as I like brisket. Had on another day the chicken strips with mashed potatoes and sweet potato casserole. The strips are hand made and good. Mashed potatoes pretty good too. I want to come back and try the hamburger steak and the chicken fried steak, I hear they are good. Need to plan my travels around the daily menus. read more
