Best little dive bar outside Birmingham. Great place to check out anytime but especially when out riding or enjoying the day.

I'm giving this place 5 stars, but not because it's a fine dining restaurant with craft cocktails…read moreand mixologists and a rack full of fancy wines. I'm giving them 5 stars because they're doing a 5 star job at what it is they're doing. Let me be clear....this is a dive bar/biker bar located in what most people would consider a very bad part of town. They keep the door locked and you have to knock and someone will let you in. I'm not sure why this is, but I suspect its to keep the nefarious types who may linger around in this part of town from barging in and causing trouble. It's a popular place for bikers. Like old guys with motorcycles who drink whisky and shoot pool. They do a bit of kareoke in there, they've got a few pool tables, a jukebox, and a tv or two so you can watch a game if one happens to be on. Drinks are ridiculously cheap...but don't go in thinking you're going to get Johnny Walker blue, or Don Julio. I believe Old Forrester was the top shelf, but hey...you order a Manhattan, and you drink it. It costs half of what it would anywhere else. Definitely a neighborhood place, with a neighborhood crowd. But the handful of times I've been here everyone was as cool as could be. Best beer in the house is Guinness, so don't get all snobby about your beer. This is the kind of place where you go in and fit in to what they're doing. Don't try to make them adapt to you. Its an experience. Go for it. A dive bar/biker bar in a seedy part of Bessemer. Get out there. Live the adventure. Meet some bikers. You'll be glad you did. Again, not 5 stars because they're a top of the line fancy place. I'm giving 5 stars because they're doing great at what it is they do.

The Nick is definitely not for everyone -- but it's absolutely an experience you'll never forget…read more After my friend (who was hosting us) passed out, my other friend and I decided to see more of Birmingham's nightlife. A friendly bartender at Up-Down Arcade Bar (another must-visit!) told us about this place, mentioning it's one of the few bars open 24 hours on the weekend. Naturally, curiosity won. From the jump, this place had character. There's a bouncer at the door, a makeshift elevated DJ booth to the right where you have to pay cash for a "membership." Don't worry -- there's an ATM conveniently behind the booth, ready to charge you a nice little convenience fee if you didn't bring cash. The membership lasts a year, but still, that was a first for me. Inside? Small. Crowded. Lively. And at 1 AM, there was a guy passed out in a chair right by the entrance -- with his dog roaming freely around the bar. I honestly couldn't make this up if I tried. The bartenders were solid -- fast, cool, and trying their best to keep up with the rush. There's a selection of local beers (pretty good ones too) and two pool tables... well, technically one, since they only had one cue ball. The pool sticks? Ancient relics. The bathroom? I'll spare you the visuals. Outside was much more breathable. There was a local guy named Walter -- from Georgia, of all places -- selling BBQ. Cool dude. The turkey wing was a little tough, but his attitude made up for it. Now, the real highlights? The people and the atmosphere. You've got folks eavesdropping on your conversations, tossing around racially backed jokes at me (that I politely corrected), a row of chain-smokers out front, and a woman openly asking for cigarettes or change that may have been homeless, but was definitely a crackhead and she so eloquently vocalized. It's a gritty and downright raw type of place, but somehow, it works. There wasn't any live music when we came, but I'm sure that's what makes this place shine more than it already does in its own unique way. I'll definitely be back for a performance night. Bottom line: Five stars because The Nick is exactly what it's supposed to be -- an unfiltered slice of Birmingham nightlife that refuses to apologize for being itself.

I went at 4:30'ish on a Tuesday for happy hour with some pals. Very slow time which was perfect for us. The bartender was very laid back. The customers seemed like regulars... familiar. Good drinks. They did the okra with flour instead of cornmeal and it was crispy on outside and soft and sweet on inside.. phenomenal. Raw plywood floors and dirt/gravel parking lot but reasonable and good af. Complete with Pool tables, electronic dart boards and plywood floors. We ordered a cheese burger, ham sandwich and fries. The Alabama Vs Kentucky football game was on two TV's and there were a couple tables of Alabama fans who were very enthusiastic. Heard a couple F bombs. We are in Alger so, whatever. Apparently, if Alabama scores, the waitress brings around a pitcher of something red and shot glasses. Everyone yells Roll Tide and takes a shot. Fun. We did not participate since we were on the motorcycles. Not a single mask was worn by anyone. We kept ours on as much as possible. All tables had ash trays. I think all the other tables were smoking. Which is a big turn off for me There is a sign in sheet when you come in the door. It appears this is more of a club than a public bar. See pictures. Food was good. I would come back, but not during the pandemic
