Word of mouth is invaluable. I took my coat here to get the zipper fixed because the boy took his smoking jacket here to have the lining repaired and now my friend is taking his coat here to get it taken in. How come no one has reviewed Cottage of Tailoring yet?! It's true, I messed up the zipper on my jacket because the other week, before it started snowing (of course), I was at Circus and, after a few whiskeys couldn't zip up my coat properly. I yanked the zipper and ended up messing it up to the point of no return. I asked around for home-remedies to my zipper-malady, but to no avail, so my broke-grad-student butt got thee to a tailor, and quickly so. The boy said that when he'd taken his smoking jacket to his usual dry cleaner on Indianola/Arden, they said that they would just be sending it to Cottage of Tailoring, and to just bring it there. Well, let me tell you. This place is a bit hard to find. But, it's worth it. They did a fantastic job on both his jacket lining and on my jammed up zipper. Tucked away near that Catholic shop and past BW3's in Graceland, Cottage of Tailoring is run, as far as I can tell, by a kind older gentleman (though he scolded me for trying to fix my zipper myself! I didn't mention the part about the whiskey...) and an all-business seamstress. It took about a week to finish my jacket, which I assume means they're busy, but it was worth the wait, even in the snow and cold we've had this week. For ten bucks, I have no more zipper issues and didn't have to buy a new winter coat... which was my huge concern, given my financial circumstances. I definitely recommend this place if you need alterations or fixings done... it was fairly priced high quality locally-based service. Score! read more

Walked in here 4 days before my event and needed my dress let out and hemmed. A friend had recommended this place after having good experiences for both her and her husband. The woman was so helpful! (After she politely scolded me for waiting till the last minute). She fit me right in and measured me on the spot... told me to come back in 2 days to see if the dress fit. She told me she didnt want to hem it until she knew it fit right so I wouldnt pay to hem a dress I couldnt wear. I really appreciated this honesty. I came back and my dress fit great! Then she measured for the hem and it was ready for pick up the next day! I was in such a rush I didn't even ask the price... and I was so worried about the arm and leg this was going to cost me that I almost fainted with relief when she gave me my total - very affordable for such a great deal of work on such a fancy dress. In my rush, I left my shoes there the evening before my event and didn't even realize I had left them until she called me and told me she would stay open an extra TWO HOURS so I could come back and get them. SO appreciated that extra level of service. I will definitely go here for all of my future tailoring needs. read more

It's no secret that I'm not very tall. Unfortunately I'm too tall for petite pants yet regular length pants are too long for me. It's a first world problem, I know, but sometimes you get tired of tripping over your pant legs. Cottage of Tailoring has become my go-to place to get my pants hemmed. I tried two other tailors in Columbus and was disappointed in both. One was incredibly rude and the other was overpriced. The staff here is friendly and the prices are great. I've had pants hemmed, buttons replaced and shirts altered. Nothing has ever been over $10. They also work with Pierce cleaners so if you drop your suit off to be tailored they will also have it dry cleaned for you if you like. Once I bought a pair of pants Saturday morning that I really wanted to wear that evening. They were able to work me in and only charged me a dollar extra! Little things like that are what make me such a loyal customer. The only complaint I've ever had is that sometimes my pants end up being a little too short but, in their defense, I always go in there wearing flip flops or tennis shoes instead of the dress shoes I plan on wearing with my slacks. read more

I specifically called here before driving from German Village in rush hour traffic to ask how much she would charge me to hem a $40 Halloween costume. I was told $10-12 and I thought wow that's great so I clarified I needed to pick it up the next day and again, she said $10-12. In person once I had the dress on, that changed to $30. I reminded her she quoted me $10-12 and she laughed. Not cool. I normally use shims but she is closed on Mondays so this was a good opportunity for them to earn my business and another good review. After being here about 6 times I think this is one of the best tailoring places I've been yet. I currently have a bridesmaids dress being altered as we speak. The staff is always very helpful and easy to chat with. The business is very reasonably priced. I had one encounter where my husbands jacket wasn't finished when it said it would be but they did it first thing when we went to pick it up. In their defense it was prom season and there was an overflow of dresses they were working on. It's exciting to see them getting busier and expanding. I would definitely recommend! read more

Alright, so I will preface this by saying that it's really hard to inspire me to get on yelp and post a review of anything. In fact, the last time I reviewed something it was also for a 1 star experience. Here is my situation. I travel alot and have a bag that has been with me for many years. Rather than buying a new bag, I decided I would just give it a face lift and add some patches of countries I've traveled to. In total, there were 6 small patches. (I will post photos later) In addition to the bag, I also decided to have a pair of old shorts sewn up with material that I provided (in two locations). I took my bag (and the shorts) in about a week ago to discuss the alterations and hopefully get them done. They agreed to do the alterations and wrote me up a receipt (which I later found had no price quote on it). I figured it could be no more than an hour of work so why should I worry about a couple dollars. Anyways, I arrived today to pick up my bag and the shorts and I was shocked when she told me it would cost 48.00 dollars! Ok, I get it, it's a custom service but seriously? For 50 dollars I could have gotten a new bag! I expressed my dissapointment but still gave them the benefit of the doubt that perhaps the difficulty of the material (100% polyester) or location (on the outside of a pocket) made this a more tidious stitch. Well, I inspected the bag and noticed that one of the patches was not sewn on properly, so I had them change it for me in the store before I accepted it. Guess how long it took them to remove and re-sew the patch? About 2 minutes. So to remove AND resew one patch it took about 2 minutes... As for the eye test quality of the stitching: they are all sewn on with a single thread (although the stitching is tight) and do not seem well enforced. It should also be noted that each patch only cost me 1.00 dollar or less for initial purchase. After considering the rough math of how 50 dollars of service was performed for these minor alterations, the sewing cost came up to about 5.00 dollars per patch! So 5x the actual price of the patch to have them sewn on a bag? This is fair? Ok, so if that is to be the price and we are going to call this a 'premium service' it shouldnt be much to ask that they are atleast sewn on in a sturdy manner. I even briefly discussed that I do some adventure traveling to the lady on the day I brought the bag in. She was curious about why I was having the Vietnamese patch sewn on to my bag, and we talked briefly about my travels in Vietnam. Anyways! I had also requested that they use black stitching so that they all match. She confirmed this specification with me on the day that I dropped the bag off. Well, the stitching was not all black. Some was white and some was green. Hmmm... still keeping my cool. Side note- OK! Those of you that are still with me (and hopefully don't want to punch me in the face for saying the word 'patches' about 10 times) should know that the shorts were sewn properly and I was happy with the two alterations made on them. Now back to point! I probably would have let this slide because I am pretty easy going. The more I thought about it though, the more it really sank in that I was taken advantage of. On principle alone, that pisses me off. Alot. I have lived all over the world and am quite familiar with bartering and being ripped off, this definitely felt the same as being charged 'foreigner prices' in South East Asia. Ok, I'm not in South East Asia, these minor services are more expensive in the USA, I get it. So again, I was leaning toward 'let it slide' / 'nevermind' but... ...I actually already had a previous experience (lets say 3 star) at this exact store with a suit jacket that was tailored (for a reasonable price) but barely even altered. After the jacket was tailored, I put it on and it looked and felt the same as if nothing had been done to it despite my request to give it a more slim and athletic fit. I just don't get it. If you are going to charge premium prices then your service needs to be premium quality. Super dissapointed and would not go back to them and will definitely share my negative experience (where relevant) with everyone I come across unless they reached out to me and made this right by atleast reinforcing the patches on my bag with black thread as agreed. I've had a few pieces tailored here and I'm always pleased with the work and the price. I've had several pairs of pants hemmed (usually like $8-10) and several simple dresses taken in or altered (usually $10-15). I also had a jacket altered to shorten the sleeves and be taken in on the sides. It was a fairly involved alteration and I paid I think $50 for it. It was so so worth it because the jacket had gotten too big on me but I wasn't ready to give it up and it was far cheaper to alter it than replace! Everything I have ever taken to them was ready when they said--usually in a week, unless you want to pay to get it faster. Highly recommend! read more

In less than two minutes, my puppy chewed the top of my loved down coat including part of the zipper. Having had Cottage Tailoring do other work, I took the coat there on a cold Friday night, explained what had happened, hoping they were going to be able to repair the damage. "Yes," I was told and would have it by the following week. Knowing the weather forecast of way below 0 that was coming and knowing others had repairs to be made, I asked them to call if they finished before then. To my shocked surprise (and me almost in tears), they called the next morning that the coat was ready. No one would ever know the damage that had been done - the coat was perfectly, and reasonably repaired! I was/am most apprecitive of their kindness...I was kept warm throughout the polar vortex and the snowfall and my puppy is still at my house! Cottage of Tailoring! What a great find! Yea, Clintonville! They did the most beautiful job hemming my dress for my Son's Wedding next month! She took her time with the measurements to be sure it was short enough so I don't trip! Can't remember the last I wore a long dress! She was easy to talk to and helped me find just the right length with the shoes on! They were able to accommodate my time table and I thought the fee was reasonable! My Sister also had her dress done there. Her Alterations were much more involved, taking in sides and collar and "Cross-Over Sash" in front. She did a lot of measuring and pinning. We were both a little worried! But, the dress is absolutely Gorgeous! The fit is perfect! The final result was wonderful!! This experience couldn't have been better! The asian woman here I think means well but she lacks great customer service. I had her do an alteration on my bridesmaid dress. I needed the bust to be brought in, it was too loose so I needed it to fit closer. She did a decent job, I think she should have brought it in a little more. She seemed hesitant to bring it in a lot at my fitting. The day of the wedding I had to pull my strapless dress up several times, I didn't feel confident.
