Yesterday was our 20th anniversary and we chose Country Boy Cafe in Athol, Idaho for brunch. The primary reasons for choosing were great food and excellent service. Our expectations were beyond met in both arenas. My wife had the Country Bene and I had the Firehouse Bene. This was our first experience with both. They were excellent and we were especially blown away with the Firehouse Bene. Our server did her job perfectly. She should be training servers across the nation. In fact, the service was just about as amazing as the food. The atmosphere is a bit quaint, but we prefer it that way as we find it more comfortable. This is a generous rating because the service was so attentive and kind. I wish I had just come for the service and not had any food. That would've made for a delightful way to spend the time. Unfortunately, I had the French dip and he had the crispy chicken salad and both were underwhelming. And by underwhelming I mean I didn't want to eat any of it after having one bite of each. In particular, the meat on the French dip was grisly and poorly cut, the crispy chicken had no flavor, and the blue cheese dressing was the worst we've had, must've been from a very inexpensive food service giant jug. We were headed back to Spokane from Sandpoint when I got a wild hair and pulled off into Athol to look for a breakfast spot. Country Boy Cafe was not far into town and we pulled in. This cafe is the definition of a local spot. Everybody seemed to know each other and conversations drifted between staff and tables during our visit. The menu is made up of typical breakfast staples but there were a surprising number of variations too! I ordered the huckleberry pancakes with eggs and bacon. My wife had corned beef hash eggs and a biscuit and gravy. The food was delicious. The corned beef hash was the best I've tasted in seventy years. The meat was so fresh and tangy and the potato crisp. I have to comment on the bathrooms. They were incredibly clean, the tissue dispenser was set high on the wall near the bowl and dispensed easily. A must!! This small, local cafe is a staple to Athol, ID. It's nothing fancy, but is quaint and homey. I don't often care for the mom & pop cafes. I feel as though they are hit or miss with flavor, but the Country Boy brings on the flavor!! The potatoes are SO good. My husband ordered the skillet breakfast with all 3 meats and LOVED it. In all the years I've been here, I hadn't noticed Country Boy Cafe, but so glad we gave it a try! We had time to spare before a doctor appt and head the best breakfast, eggs done perfectly, bacon was so good and the portions are large. Our server was gracious, attentive and friendly. I ordered the chicken fried steak. It was much different from what the other reviews said it was going to be (see photo). The taste was bland (chicken fried steak, gravy, hashbrowns). The biscuits and gravy weren't worth the calories. The coffee was average. The portions were heavy. The service was average. No wait (Thursday around 9:15am). There were flies. The place looked clean. Prices were average (if the food tasted good). My kid ordered the pancake, scrambled eggs, and sausage patty. He said he would rate it a 4 star. It looked good to me. As you read these reviews please keep in mind that new owners took over the place in 2022. In my opinion, this place has improved dramatically since the new owners took over. Great food, friendly service with a smile, very reasonable prices. I have worked here recently as a cook and so I have the inside baseball on what this place is like. All of the staff are awesome people who support each other and work well together, and they are dedicated to preparing their meals consistently, and with professionalism. The owner is a really great guy and he definitely cares about both his customers and his staff. Had the chicken fried steak (CFS) skillet. It was the first time I had it this style, where the CFS was precut and layered above potatoes and below the scrambled eggs. Gravy neatly smothered the assembly. In the future I will get it separated (yes, they do offer it that way) as the CFS was lost among the potatoes. Overall a good meal though. Momma had the veggie omelet which she enjoyed, but she really raved about the biscuit quality. All in all, a good pit stop for breakfast or lunch. Absolutely fantastic - I had the "All the Way Up" Benedict with hashbrowns and my boyfriend had the chicken fried steak with a biscuit and gravy and we both devoured our meals and wished we could come back for more. Potatoes, as you might expect in Idaho, were the highlight of the meal. We went around late breakfast time on a weekday, and service was quick and friendly, with regular offers of coffee refills. Service is always great! Haven't been there in quite awhile, but the food just isn't the same. Portions are huge but the taste just isn't there anymore. Ordered a Denver omelette and it was basically just cheese and eggs. The ham and peppers were sparse, I mean you'd need a magnified glass to find them. The hash browns were greasy and undercooked, the peppers and onions were just thrown on top of them. The biscuits and gravy had no taste, very bland with no sausage at all and the biscuits were gummy. Very disappointing! We've been going there for the last 4 years and I'm sorry to say, besides the sweet ladies that work there, the food is not the same. read more

For an awesome breakfast I highly recommend these good people. The service was immediate, friendly and professional in a country boy sort of way. My young niece and nephew ordered hot chocolate and the young server asked them if they wanted a little whipped cream or a bunch? They both asked for a bunch and that was what they got. What it has going for it: - old school restaurant - some dishes were very good - plenty of parking What it has going against it: - dated decor - old dirty silverware - many sides over price for what you get So this place could definitely use a freshing up decor wise. Had steak and eggs, eggs were good but the steak was tough and tasteless. My wife had the stuffed waffles and she loved them. I was thinking of getting more eggs but at almost $2 for an additional egg, I passed. I can buy a dozen jumbo eggs for less than $2. Do I see myself coming here again....probably not. read more

Only one problem, we ordered it with just sausage and we got a burrito with no meat. Cooks fault. Our waitress was great and didn't even charge us for it. So we left a nice big tip!! Where to start.... while waiting for our table, a gentleman was walking out and said "what a zoo". That should've been our first hint. once we were seated, took 25 min to take our order. Three other tables were seated and orders taken before us. 3/5 orders were wrong. The table next to us had asked for Pepsi 3 times, each time being told the boss is swapping out the CO2 bottle. He was clearly not in a hurry as he was either sitting at his spot at the bar on the phone or chatting up the new employee. No urgency from him on anything except the few orders he barked from his seat. The food was pretty good once we got it fixed. The receipt was correct on what we ordered. I would call it a greasy spoon style with a tired and worn out interior...BUT their breakfast has always been fantastic, service friendly and fast and definitely reasonably priced. We have always been able to get a table right away but it's never even close to empty. Lunches we have only had once and I think I'll stick to breakfasts. read more

My family and I stopped here for breakfast after visiting Silverwood Theme Park. My Husband got the BBIT aka Best breakfast in town with the side of biscuits and gravy. He said the BBIT was delicious and definitely lived up to it's name. He would order that again. However the homemade biscuits were reminiscent of old shoe leather that had to be chiseled into pieces. My 12 year old daughter had the Hungry Farmers omelette. This omelette came with a side of Home fries and biscuits and gravy. She thought her omelette was delicious. She said she would order it again but swap out the hard biscuits for toast instead. She said the home fries tasted as if Jesus himself came down from the heavens and made these golden delicious chunks of potatoes for her. My 9 year old daughter got the French toast. Regular not stuffed. She loved the powdered sugar on top of her French toast. She said she would order it again. She said it was one of the best French toast breakfasts she has ever had! My 4 year old daughter had one pancake, one egg and one piece of bacon. She said hers was sooo good. It was as good as chocolate cake she said...;) Her bacon was extra crispy which we would not have liked but she lived it. I ordered the eggs Benedict. The eggs Benedict came with a side of home fries. The eggs, English muffin and hollandaise sauce was absolutely amazing. Comfort food at its best. The Canadian bacon on the Benedict was less than to be desired. I took it off and did not eat it. It was just a slice of lunch meat on each muffin. The home fries were delicious. Fried perfectly.
