Wind Me Up Clock Shop - New Hermle clocks just arrived!

Everything about this experience has been outstanding and, in my opinion, unbeatable. Because…read moreRhinelander is a rather small city, there are not as many clock repair shops available as in Milwaukee, for example. I found this company by researching on the Internet. My request was, I think, a bit unusual: a friend, who had taken our grandfather clock apart and had taken the parts out of state to a repair shop where he lives, was unable to come back to the Rhinelander area to put the clock back together. I thus contacted Stacy, the owner of this wonderful shop, and told him of my situation; I then asked for his (hopeful) help in putting this clock back together. Despite having a very crowded schedule and a very wide-ranging territory, Stacy was able to fit me into his schedule. When Stacy arrived at our home, he immediately went to work on the clock, explaining every step to me and highlighting the details of this clock's manufacture. The depth and breadth of his experience are amazing. Further, Stacy treated this clock as if it were his own. Just as important, he was very patient, kind, and friendly with me, his client. Stacy's price was very reasonable, particularly considering his knowledge and experience. I wish we had more clocks to repair - Stacy is THAT good. He may do a bit of work on watches, but I'm not completely sure about that. I cannot say enough good things about Stacy. If/When we have any clock (or maybe watch) repairs that need to be done - and done correctly the first time - we're taking those items to Stacy, to the Wind Me Up Clock Shop in Rhinelander - and nowhere else. If/When the time comes that we need a new clock, we're also going only to him. Stacy mentioned that his wife had urged him to go into the clock repair profession full-time; after an extended period of time, he did that. I am thankful that he acted on her guidance. Thank you both for being such talented, kind, and friendly professionals and good people.

He even talked me through fixing some issues I was having with my cuckoo a few weeks after he got it up and running and followed up with a phone call to make sure his tips fixed the problem. I don't know what the going price is for clock repairs, but the cost seemed fair to me, he gives free quotes, and when he needed to increase the price of my repair (very slightly), he gave me a call to confirm before going ahead. I would definitely choose Wind Me Up Clock Shop for any future clock repairs.

I absolutely loved this store. I had no idea why everyone was complaining about "rude owners." Now I understand. Let's just put it this way. I've bought three different clocks from this store. Two out of the three broke within four months I'd purchase. The first one that broke, they fixed it no questions asked and did not charge me. This was about seven or eight years ago. That is what prompted me to write such a glowing review. I came back because I wanted a grandfather clock for my new place. Found a nice 6 foot grandfather clock made in 1911 that fit my budget and looked all original. I paid about $1000 for it, which in retrospect was WAY too much. But the gentleman who sold it to me told me he guarantees every one of his clocks for at least one year. I figured it was better buying a clock from a reputable store that I already knew and trusted versus trying to buy another clock on Craigslist or an antique store. Boy what a mistake. One night while I was winding it, the chain completely broke, sending both weights crashing down through the floor of the clock. Now mind you, I'm extremely OCD and very careful with my antiques. I've been collecting antiques since I was 10 years old going to garage sales and I know how to be careful around fragile things. I was winding the clock exactly how the gentleman at the store showed me how to wind it. I took it back to the store and he told me that this happens all of the time. The chains get weak over time and can often break without warning. He assured me that I was doing nothing wrong and stood by his guarantee that he'd warranty the clock for a year. I was ecstatic. Fast forward about two months. I finally get a postcard in the mail saying my clock was ready and that it's cost me $89.68 for the repairs. I was a little confused at first but thought maybe this was an honest mistake. Maybe they forgot it was warranty work - no biggie. After renting another uhaul and driving it to the shop, I saw the clock had been repaired and it was ready to go. He led me to the counter and asked me to pay the $89 for the repair. I reminded him that I bought this clock less than a year ago and was told they would guarantee it. Suddenly his tone changed and I saw his true colors. He told me that "the warranty covers a lot - sometimes $300-400 of work" but that he wasn't going to cover it because the of what I had "done to it" claiming the clock was "abused." He claimed that I had "yanked on the chain too hard" which caused the chain to break. Wow. Wow. Wrong choice of words sir. I had NOT abused the clock. I was very careful when winding it, making sure to follow every single instruction they gave me to ensure the clock would stay in its original condition. I'm very careful with my old things and I spent over a grand on that clock and treasured it. For him to come to me and tell me I abused the clock? But when I assured him I did not abuse the clock, he replied "I've been repairing clocks for 51 years and I know when a clocks been abused. I cautioned him that his store has countless negative reviews online and that he should consider changing his attitude. He simply replied "well I'm already so busy with the business I'm getting so I don't really need any more business." Fine. I came back the next day to talk it over with him once more. Once again, he was rude, patronizing, straight up called me an idiot for not knowing how to wind the clock properly. I asked him why this wasn't explained to me when I bought the clock, he insinuated that I lacked common sense and intelligence. He claimed I "threatened him" and kept talking as if he believed I was going to take him to court. I told him I'd just get my clock repaired over at Brumley's from now on. He bad mouthed that business and seems to think he's a god when it comes to clock repair. He said this is basically a hobby for him and that he doesn't care how he treats customers. I won't be returning ever again. I hope this place rots to the ground. There are FAR better places to get clocks repaired. In terms of purchasing them, buy at your own risk. You may end up with a lemon that has not been cared for while it's been withering away in this dusty old shop. There are other places to get clocks - even if you have to drive to another city. It's worth it to avoid the headache I've been put through.
