This place is over-priced and over-rated. I heard rave reviews about their chicken salad. It should be called "mayonnaise salad" because there was a pound of mayonnaise and huge pieces of shredded rotisserie chicken and nothing else, no carrots, no celery, just chicken and mayonnaise. If I wanted a chicken sandwich I would have bought a chicken sandwich. This was anything but chicken salad. Got their "freshly cooked" ribs, the meat was all fat and inferior-tasting. Got ham salad, had an off taste, it had dill pickles in it. Looked and tasted like dog food. This place is a joke. Inferior products, high prices, and an unfriendly manager. Steer clear! read more

I like the store although it's all around too expensive for my budget. I had to ask for a further markdown on plants they were selling at the end of the season as they were still overpriced & dying but they did accommodate although they were still tight about it. I was literally shocked at the cost of their already cooked meatloaf in the small aluminum tray. A half of the tray which is a very small amount costed $10.00. I don't know if they made a mistake on the price or if that's what they really charge as I was too busy to follow up on it. So for one small aluminum tray which is a tiny loaf pan, that comes to about $20.00 according to what they charged me & it didn't taste that good either. A very strange recipe as I've never tasted anything like it & I'm a Baby Boomer that knows how to make meatloaf. At Hog Wild you can get an entire meatloaf dinner w/vegetables & potatoes, bread for $13.95 & they give you 2 huge chunks of meat. read more

County Fair is a great local grocer that is a staple in the community. They offer a wide range of groceries and high quality meats. Some prices can be a bit higher but consider convenience in that it's centrally located. If you make a request they will bring things in, like now they have an organic section, Ripple kids and an assortment 9f ethnically diverse staple goods. read more

I've been shopping at County Fair for years. I like the fact that they hire a lot of neighborhood kids. So, I was rather upset with my experience recently. I stepped up to a check out line with a cashier and bagger. Both girls were chatting away; they never looked up and completely ignored me. I picked up my items from the counter and moved to another cashier. When I did so, I heard the bagger clearly say derogatory things includng the F word. What is going on at County Fair? read more

This family-owned grocery store is the bee's knees! My mother must stop in here at least once a week, and I'm with her most of the time nowadays, so I've been quite on quite a number of visits here. There is a great selection of organic produce, an in-house bakery, deli, and a butcher. The shelves are well-stocked, the aisles are sufficiently wide, and cashiers and stockers are friendly. Yes, prices on some items are high, but that is the result of the lack of buying power of a small business. I love that they have a variety of wild-caught fish, organic chicken, and house-made gourmet burgers, kebabs, etc. There is a hot bar, salad bar, and rotisserie chickens and bbq ribs. They have been in business for decades, hire local teens/youths, and raise funds for families in need in the neighborhood. How is that for a good business model?! read more

STAY AWAY FROM THE MEAT DEPARTMENT. My family has lived half a mile from County Fair since 1967. It is the ONLY store my 94-yr-old mom patronizes. (NOT ANYMORE: Sorry, Mom!) While I shop several grocery stores, I enjoy the friendly, clean environment at County Fair as well as the convenience, so I still make it part of my rounds. For well over a decade, the master butcher at County Fair has provided me with ground beef fat for my family recipe Christmas pudding. We've even exchanged pleasantries. I always give him several days' notice and he has always come through. This last Christmas, 2019, things took a weird turn. The butcher apparently is suffering from some memory loss, because when I submitted my order, he claimed to have no recollection of ever providing ground beef fat for me, or anyone, ever. He was very brusque but agreed to grind up an order and asked that I return a few days later. (This was Memory Lapse #1. ) I did so, and he had forgotten my order completely. (Memory Lapse #2). He was mad that I had shown up--though I was extra polite since it was clear he was overwhelmed with stress--and stomped around grabbing meat trimmings from counters. Then he handed me a package of ground fat/hamburger: it had so much meat it was bleeding. In the past, he has been able to properly provide this, and the ground fat is virtually white with maybe a few tiny specks of red. We had to throw it out--there was too much meat content to even use in our bird feeder, unless we planned on attracting vultures. He also used a profanity when he saw me (the Lord's name in vain) which I found immature and offensive. I couldn't understand how a butcher who has, in the past, done a fine job with his products would lose his skills so abruptly. This package would have embarrassed an apprentice butcher on his first day of work. Because of our long relationship with this store, I called the manager the next day to share my experience. I told him I no longer had time to make the recipe and did NOT expect a replacement, but I thought he should know about his butcher's odd behavior. Imagine my surprise when the manager scolded me for being demanding (my once-a-year request with several days heads-up using scraps on hand). Then he spoke to the butcher and informed me that the butcher did not recognize me (Memory Lapse #3). This butcher has NEVER done a less-than-excellent job in the past and has NEVER been rude. There is something going on with him, I'm not sure what, but instead of having a concerned chat, the manager wants to punish the customer who was given an unusable product. The manager even said--this shocked me-- "Are you even a customer?" because "Michael" didn't recognize me. Seriously? How many thousands of dollars per year does my family have to spend at this place to achieve customer status? And wouldn't you want to provide good service and product to even a first-timer so he or she WOULD become a regular customer? Guess not. I have had mostly good experiences with County Fair and the owners do a lot for the community. One year, I purchased gift certificates for my kids' teachers at Clissold, for the restaurant Joe Bailly's. I did not know that Bailly's was going to close for good the following weekend, and the property had been sold to County Fair. I had purchased $70 of useless gift certificates, at the time a definite sacrifice for us. But when I called the owner of County Fair, just to ask if he knew whether Bailly's had another location planned, he very graciously said he would honor those certificates as store certificates because he didn't want me to give worthless gifts. I have told many people that story as an example of a business owner who goes above and beyond with customer service. {However, I also admit that I did take a break from shopping at County Fair in the 1980's. I had an apartment in the Pullman neighborhood but still banked at Chesterfield, across the street. An employee named Chris refused to honor my check for groceries (I always paid by check and never passed a bad one) because he "didn't believe that Chicago had a street called St. Lawrence". He was a foreign person so he possibly was not familiar with Chicago streets. The cashier (who DID recognize me) was extremely apologetic, but I refrained from shopping at County Fair until I moved back up to the immediate area. And since then, no problem until this last Christmas.} I realize that holidays are stressful and that everyone has a bad day once in a while. But to have a succession of bad experiences at this one establishment within a week does not speak well for the business. Maybe these independent grocery stores have had their day, and customer service would be more reliable at a chain that takes pride in customer satisfaction. read more

I have to start the review off by saying the staff here are so very nice. Just top notch. Well when you 1st walk in the are greeted with the smell of fresh popped popcorn and you just can't just walk away with out getting a sample. And on the weekends you can get fresh made guacamole make just how you like it right in Front of you. How cool is that ? The store is set you very nice with fresh fruit and veggies. And if you need your fruit cut up nicely and put on a tray. Just place your order at the fresh fruit counter. And did I mention that they also have a salad bar. And they also have a nice meat selection. And you can also get a meal to go if you are not in the mood to cook. And the food is pretty good. The fresh made steam table is a great choice. I enjoy walking around this store and enjoying all the great deals that they have every week. Great store for folks who shop close to home and who have high disposable incomes. Prices are typically 25% more for a typical market basket, compared to other local options. Produce, meat, deli items, Billie Burgers, and (small) rotisserie chickens are expensive. \ Staff are accommodative, and lines are usually short. The owners generously support many local charities from their profits. I'd prefer they support neighbors with average incomes by lowering their prices. read more

Let me say that this worker Ian is super helpful. Every time I have been in there and I see this kid, he is busting his ass working during this pandemic. I would give 5 stars but I am worried that these workers like Ian do not have the protective basic gear provided to them. That is very upsetting. I love County Fair! The produce are always fresh and they have a great variety to choose from. The salad bar and deli counter are awesome. LOVE, LOVE,LOVE the salmon and seafood salads. Everything about this place is great. Overall, it's the vibe and the details...yes, the vibe seems to matter in a grocery store.

County fair is good for quick run outs, but there is now way you can do all your shopping here and keep a roof over your head. They do have things I can't find at FairPlay and Petes, their meat tends to be on the better than most side, but the regular prices can be quite absurd. They will special order things for you (like ground veal, and I happily buy all of it) and there is no extra charge for special cuts, or the deboning of a leg of lamb. What is no good are the way the store obviously price gouges. It was plainly evident when Dominicks closed.....well it was almost criminal. Produce varies greatly, more often rotten the next day (making Petes look good) on things like lettuce, a few times bagged potatoes and onions. Yesterday it was a bag of oranges, three rotten and moldy at the bottom. The produce manager is beyond mean to his employees in public. There is no excuse for that. Deli is ok, what scares me (for those that can actually see over the counter) is they use the same slicer for meats and cheese, leave the nellies turkey breast out on the slicer all the time, rarely clean the automatic slicer. There has been more than one occasion that I've smelled raw sewage in the deli, rain leaking from the roof onto the work tables. They don't cover the salads in the case at night, and I've never seen the salads turned. The old man is a jerk to customers and employees in public and needs to retire. The rest of the front end managers are great. It is nice to be able to find Irish groceries there on regular basis. Organic produce selection is nice. I can get Swiss chard here before I can get any from my garden. All in all, it's not my first choice, and likely never will be. read more

County Fair has the best meat and poultry products. We always try to get these from County Fair. Very good grocery variety for a friendly neighborhood store. Less stress in this store than the larger chain grocery stores. Basic needs are always available here. Love the salad bar. The double baked potatoes are the best. Great wine selection. read more

Great quality, high prices. If you're willing to pay more for better products, this is the place to go! Their bakery, deli, and butcher are the best. Better than Whole Foods, better than Trader Joe's. They sell muffin tops and I usually leave with some. Their salads are fresh, their chicken salad actually has large pieces of chicken breast in it, not the catfood stuff that comes in cans. Their Italian sausage is better than S&T in Mt. Greenwood. Their pork chops are very fresh, as is just about everything I've bought from here. Oh, and they bake their own roast and corned beef for the deli. You can get very rare to well done roast beef lunch meat! For the basics, like canned veggies, frozen stuff, etc., I go to Aldi if it's not crowded. It's the same stuff, just 1/4 the price. For produce I go to Pete's Fresh Market (when I can put up with the people that shop there, it's a different crowd lately). If I don't feel like dealing with morons blocking the aisles with their carts and yelling to each other from 5 aisles across and scowling at you if you politely ask them to move, I go here or Dominicks at 115th & Kedzie for the basics, and pay the high prices. read more

This is one of the things I miss most about living in Beverly. County Fair has a great selection of fresh produce with some organic selections. Their deli is decent and I loved their fresh mozzarella. They even have a hot foods bar that if you're in there late enough, they sell for 1/2 off. Packaged foods are expensive so skip those. This place is so neat, organized and the produce is fresh! I love that it's close to where I live. The only thing I wish was that they offered more miscellaneous coupons. Sometimes it gets a little pricy here for me. They do offer $5 coupons when you spend $100, but I wish they offered some for items instead of the amount of dollars you spend. That's my only feedback. Shopping here is like taking a time machine back to the early '80s. The decor is dated and everything seems to run the old fashioned way. But hey if it works for them, then stick with it. All the local old timers love this place and I'm a fan as well. Think of it as the place where grandma goes to get all her supplies for baking cookies and making Sunday dinner. Okay maybe not that idealistic, but still a great place. The selection of fruits and veggies is pretty decent. The meat section is great where everything is fresh and reasonably priced. The one drawback is the frozen and packaged goods. They are a little high in that aspect. And did I mention, I love at checkout your groceries are bagged in brown paper bags that have demented cartoon-looking fruit and veggies on the side. So awesome. read more

What a cool grocery store! We grew weary of the garbage cuts of meat that Dominicks and Jewel have been offering and the produce at those stores leaves a lot to be desired. So the wife headed over for the shopping one weekend and we love the store now. The store is set up very nicely. It's quaint and not too "big box" either. We have really had bad luck with the meat at other stores and we've been very pleased with the meat here. We got our St. Patrick's Day corned beef from County Fair and it was the best corned beef we've ever cooked. Ribs are quite good there too. They have fresh hot food there as well and when I'm really in the mood for a meal and don't feel like cooking, the pre-made fare there is wonderful. It has a very "home cooked" feel to it. They have turkey and stuffing, stuffed cabbage, corn, sausage and peppers amongst of variety of other great food! The spirits and alcohol area is very good too as they have many different kinds of beers and microbrews. Nice wine selection too. Mind you this is a grocery store, not a liqour store, but for an impulse buy of a decent 6 pack, they have some nice off the wall brews. The only drawback to the store is that it is a little higher priced than we would like, but I guess with gas prices being the way they are, everything is a little bit more pricey. Cactus Gelato? Guess what? Went there on 3/16/3020 to grab corned beef...clerk was stocking single wrapped rolls of toilet paper on otherwise empty shelves. It looked like what the would use to stock their own employee restrooms. Sign said $2.00 per roll!!!! Price gouging is not only illegal - especially in these times, it's disgraceful and disgusting. This is a great local grocery store that sells specialty items that you have to drive to various places to get. The produce and bakery sections are always fully stocked with the freshest items. Even walking through the entrance demonstrates this place is special, with smells of freshly popped popcorn and baked cinnamon rolls. After seeing Calumet Fisheries on "No Reservations," I checked the smoked salmon price, and saw that it was wayyyyy expensive. But then I remember walking past some smoked salmon chunks in County Fair about a year ago, and not wanted to trek so far east, I checked County Fair. They had it. And it was delicious! And very fairly priced at 10.98/lb vs Cal Fish's 15.29/lb. Although some of the other everyday grocery items are a bit overpriced since this is a locally owned business, I don't mind paying a bit extra for the quality of their specialty items and fresh produce/meats. Plus, now there's a new Home Run Inn restaurant right next door!! read more

There are a lot of options for groceries in my neighborhood of Beverly but County Fair is BY FAR the best. Jewel, Walmart (yuk), Target...can't hold a candle to this Southside staple of stability. Sure, there's not a HUGE selection and the pricing is quasi-competitive but what they lack in variety they make up for in service and charm What a great business model: Employ young workers, provide great working conditions and exceed your customers expectations. Take note big-box grocery stores: I MAINLY go to County Fair because I have yet to wait for more than ONE person in the checkout line in front of me! They ALWAYS have enough registers open and ALWAYS have enough staff to work them. That is the main reason I keep going there. read more

Yup, I live and grew up in the area, and even tho money is tight, I shop here regularly for the basics. Produce & milk especially. Had to go to Jewel the other night, late and on the fly. Taught me again why I shop local at Co Fair. the broccoli I got at Jewel isnt going to keep long..... Also, the Baffes family are very hands-on, and receptive to regular customers requests for specific items. If you buy it, they will stock it. Plus, the Billy Bucks can accumulate, and you get a return on your dollars if you save a bunch. Its good to see them doing so well, expanding the building and the variety of items stocked. We're lucky to have this place in the neighborhood. read more

Let me preface by saying that my goal is to bring awareness to the community of the owner/management and how he treats employees at this place of business. We've lived in the 60805 community since 2002 & we believe that every day you should give it your best effort. My Son was raised in the community & is a very decent young man with NO issues ever of being a malcontent. He is a part time college student & has worked part time jobs in Palos Park in Orland Park with a customer base that is extremely demanding. I too am in the customer service business so my Son truly understands that we have to go that extra step on an ongoing pace. He was recently hired at this established just very recently-he was profiled not by the base of his character, but the color of his skin. He thought he was bringing a level of value & experience into this work place, along with forming some memorable relationships throughout this Holiday season. It didn't matter that Mr B didn't have to train Him- hold his hand, & realize that he had a solid employee to help support his business. Instead he spied in him every 10mins checked in with supervision to all what he was doing. He constantly asked his co-workers if he was doing something wrong, they did their best to support him. He was reprimanded when he had to use the restroom & was told he had to wait to go on his break moving forward. He took his lunch off the premises & was asked where he went for lunch by Mr B. & didn't approve of this. My son unfortunately felt this was not healthy work environment & he felt he had to quit. He spoke in confidence with 1 individual & the message was that Mr. B "felt" my son was a hoodlum. All he had to do was check his references from his previous employers to validate his work ethic & character. It's going to be 2019 soon. You'd think we'd be over this.
