The amount of protein in the skewers was simply pathetic, feeling like one segment too short. One piece was completely fatty, and another segment was part of a bony cartilage which I had to spit out. We also tried their milk skin yogurt. It was pre-packaged in a cup. The texture was nice and silky. It was slightly sweet and not sour at all as I had feared. But at $5.50 that's an expensive cup of yogurt.

The Chinese beef stew makes a great compliment to a bowl of steamy noodles with tender slices of beef flank and beef tendons (my favorite part). Noodle dishes can also be ordered Hong Kong style on a plate with broth on the side. We also get a dish of boiled vegetables with oyster sauce to round out our meal (usually baby Chinese Broccoli or choy sum). The menu has expanded since the last time we were here with new side dishes like curry fish balls and braised shiitake mushrooms that you can get over noodles or a la carte. Lao Bei Fang is the longest-standing, and likely the only establishment in that category. My staples are always their hand-pulled noodle soup (can't go wrong with either beef or lamb) and potstickers--always the first to get wiped out when I bring them to a potluck. The food was extremely filling and affordable when I was a college student, and now, as a grown-ass adult, it's nostalgic, unpretentious, still extremely filling and affordable in a dining scene where presentation and paying high prices seem to be the norm. Service is no-frills, order at the counter, and the people working here are kind and very efficient.
