We tried their miso oyster mushroom croissant - it was good, Cara Cara pistachio cream - the pistachio left an aftertaste which I did not like, jalapenos pretzel croissant - good, plain croissant- good. Not the type of bakery you can go in and sit and relax, more of a grab and go environment. The pastries were unbelievably delicious, so flaky, so full of flavor, absolutely delicious! Incredible. One of my favorite bakeries of all time. I ordered two items: the jalapeño croissant and the pain aux raisins. Both were fantastic. The jalapeño was perfectly flaky on the inside while retaining an almost custardy interior - just how I like it. The pepper gave it a good spicy kick, which could be too much for those who aren't accustomed to spice (it was almost too much, even for me), but it was so delicious, I loved it. Now, the pain aux raisins - ooh lala - it was SO good, it was even better than the one I had in Paris! You could really taste the golden raisins, and it was just sweet enough - not overwhelming. After we overslept for our original brunch plans, a quick Yelp search redirected us to Mel. Do not trust the GoogleMaps directions! They led us to this back alley entrance when we could have easily entered from Warren Street. This place had a long line when we arrived and no indoor seating but it's right next to a little park with picnic tables and some additional seating in the park. In addition to providing coffee and pastries, it seems they have a little market space here too with lots of local goodies. It was cute! I ended up getting the pistachio croissant (which iirc was twice baked!) and my husband got the corn cookie with blueberry jam. It was the perfect brekky to tide us over until our lunch rezzies and fuel our morning walk around Hudson. This place was INCREDIBLE!!! My friends wanted to try this bakery back when they were in NYC but they sadly closed before they could. We all finally got a chance to try it in Hudson and loved it! The four of us ordered 9 pastries to share. I also ordered a chai latte for myself which was so good. Among the pastries, my two favorite savory ones were the garlic knots and shishito, sweet corn and cheddar pastry. My favorite sweet pastry was the raspberries and sweet corn cream. Fabulous product, awful communication. Website popup said to email an order, and I did at least a day in advance. Waited in line to pickup order which I had my doubts it would be there. Turns out it wasn't. Counter person told me that I would need to order at least 36 hours in advance (I think I had), and then they charged me for the wrong two pastries. They told me they had refunded the first erroneous charge, but didn't. After 30 minutes online and on the phone with my credit card company they refunded me more than I should have been. Since Mel hasn't even responded to the order I sent in almost a week ago, I don't feel bad. I don't imagine they will respond to my email this morning either about being double charged. Mel has been on my list for a while - I mean, a twice James Beard Award nominee in my backyard?! Yes, please! I visited on a Friday afternoon and loved the park setting outside the bakery. Carbs & coffee - 2 legally addictive substances are available here at Mel in a variety of forms. There's been a lot of hype surrounding this 2024 James Beard award semi-finalist (bakery category). I finally made it here and doubted that it could live up to the hype. Oh ye of little faith. One bite of their ham and cheese croissant was all it took to make me a member of the cult. It's hard to explain but I think our palates understand when someone crafts our food. Their cultivated knowledge and skill is in the food. Back to the croissant. The initial crunch of puff pasty giving way to an airy middle layer then the substantive salt of the ham intermingled with bits of caramelized cheese; it's good stuff. Now imagine it still slightly warm from the oven. Yeah, you get me. I'm not proud of this but I housed that croissant in less than a minute in the relative privacy of my car. The same can be said of the sourdough baguette. Simple yet so satisfying; the differing textures of crunch and chew and the tang of the dough are worth savoring. The place, as one could imagine, was busy. Word gets around. Their staff, however, has its system in place to bring order to what could otherwise be a chaotic space. It's clean in there, some merch available (aprons?, bagged coffee) in front, a display of baked goods near the rear of the store, a menu of coffee/espresso drinks above the display. We got here 30 minutes before closing and pretty much everything was sold out, so we got one each of the remaining items: a rye chocolate chip cookie, a zucchini goat cheese danish, and a pistachio almond croissant. If the leftovers were THIS good, I wonder how good everything else was. The cookie was perfectly chewy on the inside and a little crispy at the edges with melty chocolate chips. The danish was excellent, possibly my favorite of the three. The pistachio croissant managed to be crispy with perfect lamination despite the filling, which also had a citrus note that helped balance the sweetness. I would absolutely recommend this. read more

I'm honestly shocked that Mel doesn't have more reviews because it's so good. I was worried that there wouldn't be a lot of items left when I went after reading some reviews, but all the items I wanted to try were still available. The tomato pie slice is to die for. The bread was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft in the center. There's also so much tomato sauce. It's super filling. It had the perfect amount of savory and acidity. Forget about getting a slice of pizza somewhere else in the neighborhood. This is a perfectly satisfying alternative. The buckwheat banana bread with toasted pecans was so fresh. The top had a sugary, spiced crust which provided a nice textural contrast to the moist, soft bread. I loved the pecans embedded in the bread but wished there were more. There were hidden chunks of banana inside. It's not the best banana bread I've had, but it is still really good. Yet another great bakery just opened on the Lower East Side, just a few steps from both Michaeli on one side and Partybus Bakeshop on the other (and the best of the best Supermoon another few blocks up). We tried everything they made at a Dame popup a few weeks ago, but only tried a few things today as they were sold out of most pastries by 11am. What we did try was excellent though - the Meathook Ham & Cheese Croissant and a nice crusty Bialy. Had this place in my bookmarks for quite sometime. I'm a fan of almond croissants, was really intrigued to try the pistachio almond croissant. I was expected to be blown out of the water however I thought it was just standard. I got the pistachio almond croissant and also a regular croissant. Both croissants that I received were on the small side. The pistachio croissant had a nice texture and was filled, however, the filling was lacking a straight-forward pistachio flavor which I was was expecting.
