Had to try some BBQ before I left the midwest. Stopped here for a Linner (lunch/dinner) mid afternoon, so we were pretty much the only ones here. We got 2 of the sandwich deals (sandwich+side+drinks). My friend got the brisket sandwich with seasoned fries, and I got the pulled chicken sandwich with sweet tater fries. The fries were great and we had no complaints. My friend misses her Phil's BBQ from San Diego, but I liked the pulled chicken sandwich. Plus here is their many different option for BBQ sauces. I had smoke stack nachos -- best of both worlds -- smoke stack meat was really good (juicy, flavorful). Tasted great with 2 different sauces: the TX and vinegar based ones (ahhh! Specific names are at a loss for the moment!!). Great BBQ! Get the nachos, they are amazing. The service is good too. The sauce was a little runny, but still very tasty. I wouldn't get the I-70 fries, they were limp and soggy. I tend to order the smokehouse salad with pulled pork (salad with whatever meat you want on top) or the Q deal (meat, side and drink) for brisket and sweet potato fries. The brisket was dry, ribs and chicken wings were tough, the sausage was okay. The portion size of size and meat and sides is very skimpy. I spent $40 on a very disappointing meal. Very impressed with their well-cooked but still juicy Beef Brisket and tender pulled pork. Great for lunch sandwich. Cannot go wrong with these two. The smoke turkey is also a decent choice for whit meat diners. Now the Smoked BBQ ribs. 10 hours of smoking produced very tender and fall-of-bone ribs. However, apparently, the quality controls of cooking varies every time I went. Sometimes it is very good, but some other times are under-cooked. Most of the meats are unseasoned or lightly seasoned. They will have to go with their 4 different in-house sauces. You got to try to find which one is your personal favor. For sure it is great place to dine with family and few good friends if they can have better controls of the smokers. read more

I've given this place multiple chances all through their drive-thru. If the inside experience is anything like their drive-thru experience I would have to say their customer service is horrendous. Not ONE time have I encountered a friendly person in the drive-thru, prices are out of line, and 3 of the 4 times they forgot something in my order. To be fair and balanced the food is pretty decent including the pie slices they serve. I have spoken to several other people in Manhattan and have heard the same things about poor customer service. It is by no means authentic Kansas City BBQ, but it's relatively inexpensive and the menu is expansive so you can fulfill your craving. There are only a few barbecue restaurants in Manhattan, KS, so even though the food isn't anything to write home about, Cox Bros is an okay place to get some BBQ and the price is right. read more

Visited Cox Bros while passing through Manhattan to visit family. We made it through the line right before the lunch crowd came in. The woman who took our order was friendly as were the rest of the ladies who delivered our food. I got the Smokestack sandwich which was yummy a couple bits of gristle, but that's to be expected when you're eating bbq. Hubs got pulled pork sandwich which he enjoyed. We liked the variety of sauce choices. Our kids enjoyed their corn dogs, but I would recommend having a mac and cheese without the kick for children who don't like spicy food. 3/5 Stars from me. Cox Brothers was okay to good BBQ, but far from the better BBQ places in the region (For that, go east to Kansas City). I had the Brisket, beans and fries. The brisket was a little dry and the taste made me think it has been sitting around for a while. It did not taste fresh. The portion size was ample and the meat was fairly lean (which may have contributed to it being a little dry). The beans were fantastic. Nice, large chunks of pork, with a hearty, smokey flavor. I was a bit disappointed in the available BBQ sauces. The "original" sauce was too vinegar-y. It tasted more like Memphis/Southern style BBQ. Not Kansas-style BBQ, at all. The other sauces were mediocre. The best of the group was the "jazz" sauce. It was tangy and spicy. For a restaurant of this time, and for the quantity and quality of food, Cox Brothers seemed rather expensive. Expect to pay somewhere in the range of $15 or more per person by the time you add in "extras" and sales tax. That wouldn't be bad for a more upscale place, but Cox has the feel of a fast food joint. If you want BBQ done right, stop by Cox Bro's when you see it. I had the Brisket and SmokeStack. Sides of baked beans and potato salad. I'm not gonna lie, brisket was pretty average, but that smokestack... 5 stars. Also, the baked beans were remarkably good. So there's my remark. They served it with a piece of toast, and they'll give you another piece if you ask to make yourself a pretty good sandwich. There is a small cart with onions and I believe peppers and pickles, but I don't remember, I just hogged up a pile of onions and ran to my seat, where there were 4 different bottles of BBQ sauce waiting for me. Sweetest to spiciest, basically. The BBQ deserves 4.259999999 stars. The price is what leaves it with an overall rating of 3. You get about $10 worth of food, and you pay $15. (but I gotta say, after walking in and smelling it, and seeing the food on everyone's plates, they could've told me $25 and I wouldn't have refused.) Good place to eat. I've always loved the food here and the quesadilla is outstanding but you lost a weekly customer tonight. About a moth ago, I ordered the Carolina pulled pork sandwich and found 4 pieces of nasty cartilage before finally just throwing out the sandwich . Tonight, I opted for the brisket sandwich and there was so much fat in the sandwich, it was completely inedible. I tried to remove all the dripping fat and wound up with barely any meat at all. The bottom of the bun was also soaked in grease and I threw it all in the trash. The prices are high and I expect some sort of quality in the product if you are going to ask those prices. Great place. Panera-style setup, where you order at the counter, but not at all "fast food." Perfect balance of price, convenience, speed, etc. I've done quick 30 minute lunches, but also hung out for over an hour enjoying the beer. Best BBQ in town for the price. Our family has been very strong supporters and customers of all the Cox brothers establishments. The last three visits to the bbq however has been disappointing. The food has been average to decent, but the help has been incredibly rude. This has not been just one specific employee, but the majority of employees. Today was so offensive that we simply left and went to eat at El Tapatio. I have had causal business lunches, family meals, to go meals and we've purchased several holiday meats for our families to enjoy. The past few times my rewards card has not worked. I would ask how do we remedy that issue, absolutely no response from any employee. Went online and didn't get any help. I have had it. They have lost my business for good. Still amazing! We've loved this place since they opened the doors here, and that hasn't changed a bit. The staff is always friendly and fast, and the food is excellent. Pulled pork, brisket, chicken, whatever is ordered is always a hit. The mac & jack is utterly fantastic - I want a recipe!! - and the meats are full of flavor and tender every time. We've had BBQ in a lot of places in the country, including the SE and Texas, and this is, hands down, some of the very best.
