My first week in Kansas and I had the BBQ it was amazing, I will definitely be going back.

The BBQ quality had dropped past four visits. I order the ribs thinking they will be fall off the bone and they never are. Ribs also have no flavor. Tonight, the Mac and Jack tasted like it was in a hot well for four hours. Cox used to be the place for BBQ, I want to continue being a fan but continue to get disappointed. My wife and I have gone here on multiple occasions. We are from Texas and know all about great BBQ, and this is the closest it comes to getting some quality bbq in Manhattan. If you need fast tasty bbq, this is the place! The service is incredibly friendly and professional. Sometimes they prepare your food so fast it's ready in the time it takes to fill a fountain drink. The sauces are great, as are the nachos. This place hasn't let me down yet. read more

Average bbq. On my final visit i watch a worker pull a new brisket out and begin to scrap the bark off into the trash. I was in shock. When i asked him "wth are you doing?" He told me they were required to do that. Obviously, no self respecting pit master would do this. read more

I really like Cox Brothers. It's a unique atmosphere, and the food is good for the price. We usually get the pork platter with two sides, and 12 bucks is enough for two people. The food tastes great also. Sweet potatoe fries are my recommendation. read more

A very, very satisfying overall experience. This is a busy place; you order at the counter and find your own seat. The key innovation is that - due to the selection of BBQ sauces - the meat is presented to you as God intended, viz., not already smothered in sauce. This exposes Cox's not so dirty secret: the BBQ isn't actually that amazing. But it doesn't matter - paired with the sauces, sides, and desserts the whole thing works like a charm. Winning. Of the meats, the choice that had the most flavor were the ribs. You can eat them dry if you want to and that was surprisingly satisfying. The pulled pork and the brisket were perfectly fine without being drool-worthy on their own. Use the sauce, Luke. The roast turkey was well executed but similarly without star power on its lonesome. We didn't try the pulled chicken. Of the sides, the sweet potato fries were amazing. Best in class. Really fantastic. Also outstanding was the mac and cheese and - surprise - the broccoli salad thingy. "Accidentally" spill some of the broccoli salad sauce on that turkey and you have a real winner. Of the sauces, Carolina was this reviewer's favorite but the whole point is to get one cup of each and try them all. Dip the fries; knock yourself out. The walnut brownies for dessert were themselves small dense rectangles of excellence. Win. Ing. The one improvement here would be the drinks. More selection would be better. Something a little tastier than the fountain sodas would work well. How about some nice, homemade lemonade? The ice tea (or beer, if you are so inclined) is the way to go. read more

I took a chance here, was just craving BBQ and was told KC is known for it so thought, "I'm in the same state, close enough right"? Wrong. It offers drive-thru which should have told me something. The sauces were OK, nothing special, Cole slaw was bland and boring even though they add pineapple and the beans tasted like canned pork and beans. I thought about their pecan pie as the cashier stated they made it here but took a look and it was light with just a little layer of pecans. I'll admit I'm picky about my pecan pie, Grandma taught me how to make the good stuff. I plan on heading to KC for some real BBQ and hopefully it will live up to the hype. read more

Disappointed. I was not sure what to expect, since I had not heard any word of mouth about this place, but maybe now I understand why I was their only patron. I am a recently new resident, having moved from Memphis, so when I saw ribs on the menu with "traditional Memphis dry rub", I got excited! Unfortunately, I don't think that anyone from Cox's has ever eaten ribs in a Memphis Bbq restaurant, because there was only one spice in the rub, black pepper, and not much of that. Otherwise I tasted a good bit of sugar and maybe a touch of salt. Memphis dry rub traditionally has a blend of savory spices and I don't ever recall having sweet ribs anywhere in Memphis. That's usually the purpose of bbq sauce, if you choose. There's room for improvement, including to their red skin potato salad, which has the texture of cold mashed potatoes with just a few lumps. For their prices (everything is ala carte and overpriced for what you get) they should really be trying harder. Now I understand why the place was empty. read more

We took a day trip to Manhattan this past weekend. While taking in the sites, we noticed the Cox Bros. "genuine" BBQ. We scoffed at the use of the word laughing that if you have to use the word it probably isn't that good. We drove past and caught one whiff of the smoke aroma! My family and I went in and ordered a platter. Way too much food for 4 adults! More importantly, sorry about the scoff. Genuine is an understatement. As the saying goes, if it's really good BBQ you don't need sauce. I am still unaware of how their sauce tastes. It's that good! I would put Cox Bros BBQ up against any in the Midwest and Southwest. read more

My favorite place to eat in Manhattan by far. Although it is slightly more expensive compared its fast food neighbors, there is NO comparison. I feel the portions are excellent, I can usually eat the entire sandwich and most of the fries and feel completely stuffed. Although I always feel bad throwing away the fries since I feel like I'm throwing away a slice of heaven. Their food just melts in your mouth. My favorite is the Big Memphis with a side of Sweet Potato Fries. There's really no wait staff since you go up to the counter to order so no comments on them. The tables are usually kept really clean. The one complaint I do have is their drinks always seemed slightly watered down. I felt this way about their sweet tea on some occasions. read more

Cox Bros. is pretty good barbeque, but being from Texas, I have had MUCH better. It is also rather expensive. We have eaten there several times (there aren't that many barbeque places here in Manhattan, Kansas) and each time, something isn't right. The last time we got the "family deal" (price had gone up $5 since the last time we visited), the sweet potato fries and onion rings were almost burnt (their oil must have been VERY old) and they only gave us a TINY side of potato salad for a family deal that cost us over $35 !! Food is good however the salads we had were more like a side salad size. For what I was charged i was expecting twice as much salad. The salad was a little bigger than the small side salad you get at McDonald's but it was 8 times as much Would I go back? Like the food, but for the prices, the portion sizes are disappointing. Overall the food is good, as good as any BBQ you can get in the Manhattan area. I love the slaw when it's really fresh, not so much when it's been sitting a while. Today I tried the smoke stack for the first time, and loved the smokey flavor, the slight char around the outsides of the chunks of meat, and tenderness on the inside. I also like their Texas BBQ sauce, nice balance of spicy, tangy, smokey flavors. The food alone would have rated 4 stars on my scale. The only thing I really don't appreciate is the stingy food portions, especially meat portions, considering the prices. Maybe other customers are fine with the portions. In my case, it's the only reason I don't eat there weekly, rather than every month or two. read more

Solid BBQ for Manhattan. The pulled pork and brisket gave a good amount of smoke flavor, but can be dry. This can easily be fixed by adding a little sauce, but at least it's the over sauces poor excuse for BBQ they serve at Famous Daves. read more

Great meat. The beef I had was absolutely perfect, my wife loved the turkey. The sauces? tried 'em all and didnt care for any, but that's just personal preference. While we were finishing, my wife pointed out that the two young ladies cleaning the tables and the counter were laying thier wash rags on the floor and then using them on the counter again! Makes you wonder how clean the kitchen is. Got up and headed straight for the door. A young man thanked us for coming so we told him about the wash rags laying on the floor and then being used on the tables and counters. He said "sorry 'bout that" and then went back to his texting. One more thing. Watch out for falling dust. They have ball caps hanging from the ceiling and if you look at the dark colored ones, you'll see HUGE dust bunnies waiting to drop. Clean?? Best BBQ, atmosphere, and service in town. My family and I are well-travelled and restaurant snobs, and we love this place. Friendly, knowledgeable, hard-working staff. Clean, family-friendly, casual atmosphere. Food is great. They can guide you through the menu if needed. I've had the Carolina BBQ sandwich and wasn't impressed with the soggy bun. My wife went to Cox to pick up our order and when she got home we opened the container and I told her they must have given her the wrong order. By the way it was a 3 meat plater. When I called the Manhattan store a girl named Britney answered the phone. When I explained that there wasn't enough meat on here to make a good sandwich. She said that it is 3ozs per serving. So then when I told her that they had more meat on their sandwiches she said yes your right we put 5.5ozs on them. By the way my plater had 4 strips of brisket and 11 slices of sausage about the thickness of a quarter 3 slices of bread ( like I have bore bread than meat LOL ) and fries. I told her that this is BS and a rip off. I ask for a manager or to speak to an owner. She said that I can take care of this. I ask How? She said that I will send you a $20.00 gift card. I was still mad but because she was nice and pleasant voice I said that is fine but I will not be ordering anymore platers. She asked for my information so that she could mail the gift card that was a week ago and nothing. I only live about 4 or 5 miles from the store. It dose not take more that for mail for inter city. I have no problem with the food but $17.00 for 9ozs of meat is BS. I can go to Texas Road House and have a great steak for that price. read more

I really like the food and the BBQ sauces at this place and the staff is always friendly but I have noticed something recently. Their food portions seemed to have shrunk. The sandwich buns have gotten smaller (i.e - less meat) along with small-portioned sides including fries, o-rings and mac/cheese. The BBQ itself it a solid 4 stars. My problem is the price per portion. I know how expensive BBQ is and how much time and work goes into putting out a good product. I also don't mind paying for a premium for good BBQ. The portions at this place are by far the smallest I have ever encountered at a BBQ joint and the price is just as high if not higher. I choose to spend me hard earned money at other local favorites and save my BBQ fix for my trips to KC. If you want B+ BBQ for A+++ prices this is the perfect spot for you. I really want to like this place, I really do. We recently moved here from Kansas City where we were in close proximity to award-winning bbq. Being realists, we understand that not many BBQ joints can live up to Gates or OK Joe's, so were not expecting too much from Cox BBQ. Good thing, because it was not great. Pulled pork is decent, brisket is dry with not much flavor, and the chicken is very plain. I do like being able to choose from a variety of sauces which helps cover up the taste (or non-taste) of the meat. Fries have always been soggy. We have only used the drive-thru which, judging from the other reviews on yelp, might be our problem. The drive-through is very slow and we have received the wrong order or something was wrong with our order 5 out of the 5 times we have been there. We will probably go back because a girl's gotta get her barbecue fix every so often, but I will certainly not be too excited about it. read more
