I have all shots and everything updated as I had to bring my cats to another clinic due to the fact I could not get in here a bit ago. Always brought in with no prob as long as they were up to date with shots. They always are I told employee. New policy now they need a exam now just to clip toe nails? $$$$$$ No more Coyne for me. We have been taking our "Little Guy"...Langston, a long-haired Chihuahua, to Coyne since we moved to the area. Our kids also bring their Little Guys (a Chihuahua and a Yorkie) to Coyne as well. Since our Anniversary is July 1st, we usually go on vacation at this time, which means that Lang is boarded during the 4th of July. Coyne does an excellent job of having the dogs listen to calming music which drowns out all of the noise outside. They also get "cuddle time" (human contact) on a regular basis. We also take him there for his check ups and for his grooming. The young lady who cuts him does an excellent job! We love Coyne because of their professionalism, customer service, and care for our pets. I highly recommend them! read more

Horrible office manager!!! All they care about is.the money. took dog in for busted dew claw, wanted it removed but oh "No, let's try this 1st" 3 visits and $1300 later still has infected/busted claw. mind you the vets were GREAT they wanted to work with is as far as money. however I got an estimate in the am, but Dr called me back and estimate DOUBLES!! I go into and am visible upset /mad. office manager comes in with attitude right off the bat it gets heated and she says I'm talking bad to the vet, when in reality I was talking to her that way. I kissed the butt's bcz all I car about is my dog but say nice and calmly as I'm walking out the BBB Will be hearing about her. She follows me out to the parking lot after we scream at eachother in the lobby she gets in my face and tells me they won't see my dog anymore. The staff was very rude and I told me I owe them money on a plan that comes outta my account every month. A friend at work took in a mama cat and her 5 kittens that had been dumped to fend for themselves outside in the middle of nowhere. I took in 2 of the kittens(I may be taking in one more)and needed to get them seen ASAP for their wellness exam, vaccines & dewormer. My regular vet couldn't see me for over 2 weeks. Thank god Coyne provides walk-ins!! I was told the wait was an hour & a half long but they were able to see me within about 30 minutes. Staff was polite, kind & caring. Please do not take your pet here. On a visit for a different reason, the Coyne vet informed us that our dog needed an eye "debridement" under anesthesia. The procedure traumatized our dog's eye and we had to take her to a specialist from Purdue, who informed us that our dog had a common autoimmune issue treatable by eye drops and steroids--and that the vet from Coyne should have never subjected her to a debridement procedure. Our dog's eye is permanently damaged because of the Coyne vet performing an unnecessary debridement procedure. We should not have trusted Coyne with the care of our dog and will always regret doing so. read more

This is my first visit to Coyne Vet in Portage and I think it will be my last. In response to the message back from the manager. You talk about transparency, then one of the 4 employees that were up front might have mentioned that. I didn't know that there was only one doc seeing pets until I was called into a room. So maybe they should be a little more aware of who had been waiting and advise them of the situation at hand instead of chit chatting and basically ignoring everyone in the waiting room. read more

Years ago the facility in Portage was run by a Dr Lemmer (may be misspelled) . At that time the place had a wonderful caring atmosphere, and it was a pleasure to bring our pets in. By comparison today it is like deliberate chaos. They stopped taking appointments when Coyne took over so you never know if you will wait 15 minutes or 3 hours. Even if you call ahead they will always tell you it is a good time to come in and then you walk into bedlam. We will never set foot in the place again. To us, it looks like their only motive is profit, and it shows. I am sure someone is making a lot of money since they enlarged the place to board pets, but at what cost to the animals. read more

This place is a total nightmare. Our dogs have been going to daycare and getting vet care here for the last year and a half (we were suckered in to the vet plan for a 12 month contract) and while we weren't happy, they do basic care for the dogs and they are safe for the day, plus that discount was enticing. What can I say, there aren't many options in the area. ***this is very important*** They advertise "multiple play groups across different sizes and temperaments" which you will hear as you wait 15 minutes on hold to get in contact with the front desk. This is not true, it hasn't been true the past year and a half we have been going to this location. Every time we inquire we are given the normal staffing issue line, and I get it, we are all short staffed. It's been 18 months, let's remove the advertisement because at this point it is a blatant lie. Shortly after we joined the year vet plan they peddle, our large dog started having "behavior issues" and was removed from daycare after 6 months of being there (no issues were reported in the daily report cards up until the day he was kicked out). Oddly enough, whenever we have attempted to make a boarding reservation they only have availability for our small dog, which is very concerning to us as we specifically request our dogs be boarded together in the same kennel as they are bonded. I won't even get into the wait times to check in and out, I realize they are a non appointment based clinic, that doesn't mean it should take 20 minutes to drop off and pick up dogs from daycare. read more

This was my first experience with this establishment, under the unfortunate circumstances of our pet passing away. I called them for assistance on cremation. I was not an established customer, however I was treated with such kindness and empathy. The staff member that helped me brought me into private room to explain the process, and was so patient and caring. Another local company actually took care of the process, and I was surprised that the cremains were turned around in 24 hours, with a call from Coyne that they were back. I was able to pick up my precious pet on a Sunday, thankful for their hours. Thank you to the staff here for treating me so sympathetically with such patience. I'm not sure if I'm ready to have another pet in the near future, but if I do and I am still living in the Portage area, I will surely use Coyne for our needs. read more

I love this clinic. The vet that I saw was Dr. Rudman. She saved a dog of mine many years ago. Shes very kind and takes the time to listen to you about your pet. my Persian cat had scratched all her hair off down to skin behind her ear. With in a day after Dr Rudman seen her, she stopped scratching and in a week her hair is growing back. I am so glad I found her again. I plan on taking my aussie in to see her soon. She is the Best. Cat owners, please keep in mind this is a dog prioritizing vet. I would not bring a cat here. Their communication skills are abhorrent. First visit they performed an exam. They would not do it in front of me and took my cat to the back. Why, I'm not sure. My cat is the opposite of poorly behaved at the vet. Very friendly and laid back. So...weird. Scheduled a neuter for him (just adopted him) and they told me he would require bloodwork to make sure he'd be ok. I'm cool with that. Caution is good. Problem was, the soonest they could get him in was almost a month. Fine. I asked if they could at least call me when they wanted to do the bloodwork and I was told it was no problem. They would call me. Never received a call for the bloodwork. When I brought him in for the scheduled surgery they asked me if I brought a stool sample, something they never informed me they needed, and told me he now needed more vaccines before they'd perform the neuter. Bordetella and Distemper. Ok cool, but maybe don't bomb that on someone last minute? He finally gets his neuter done, had to bring him in almost 2 hours before they opened btw...I check in at about 10 minutes before noon, pay the bill, and am left waiting for over an hour for them to bring him out. I'm starting to get apprehensive. Was there a problem? Is there a reason he's not being brought out? Problem waking up from anesthesia? They literally *forgot* to bring out my cat after being paged. I stood right at the desk when the page was performed. After waiting an hour and watching half a dozen dogs go in and out of the place I had to remind them I was there and to give my cat back. It took another ten minutes for them to bring out my normally mellow and super sweet ginger tabby...who was now trembling with fear and yowling. I've never seen him so terrified. He loves people and will fearlessly greet guests and children. I don't know what they did, but I will NEVER use this vet again. They didn't even apologize when they brought him out and practically dumped his carrier on the bench before ignoring me and going to the back. First and last time I will be using Coyne. My dog was misdiagnosed twice by the same doctor. I had to take him to another vet. Hopefully his eye infection will be cured without permanent damage. I called the office manager about it and was offered my office visit back. Really? All the money I spent there and now another vets charges. I emailed the practice manager with no response!! One star is even too much for this place. I hate it here but I'm locked into a stupid wellness program for my dog. They do not take appointments, so everything is walk in. The wait times are insane, sometimes 3-4 hours for a doctor. Today is 40 minutes just to update shots. Services are overcharged. I have been taking my dog to coyne in crown point, but we now live in Valpo so portage office is closer. I took our cat in tonight to the portage office due to him vomiting and not eating for a couple days. He is by no means a people cat, however the entire staff was great with him. We saw Dr. Rudman and she was open and honest about prices and what would be the best path for my cat. So grateful they are open late as well because I could not get there until 6:30. read more

We had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Sarah Peiss at Coyne Veterinary Center this past weekend. We accompanied our elderly mother and her cat for an evaluation due to illness which resulted in sudden paralysis of the cat's hind legs. Dr. Peiss demonstrated genuine care and compassion for our mother and her cat. She was patient and kind and allowed plenty off time to let our mom talk about her cat, what she had observed leading up to bringing him into the clinic and the care she was providing him at home. Dr. Peiss examined the cat best she could despite it's condition. She thoughtfully explained all of the options to our mother and was open to questions and concerns that she had. Unfortunately the difficult decision to euthanize the cat was made. Dr. Peiss and the staff at Coyne Veterinary Center demonstrated professionalism, sincere kindness and concern for the decision that was made and walked us through the process start to finish. We were so impressed with the capable and knowledgable staff tending to us and our cat's needs. While it was a very sad day, Dr. Peiss made all the difference in our experience. We highly recommend Coyne Veterinary Center, especially the care received from Dr. Sarah Peiss. read more

Took my dog in for an allergy issue that was never resolved. The only reason I took him to this clinic was due to the fact that I live in Portage and not in Dyer anymore. I not only over paid for the doctor to persistently tell me that my dog had fleas, she tested for fleas and never saw any! Yet she insisted my dog had fleas. I paid for a flea coller and flea medication I did not need in the month of November, and on top of that they charge for follow up visits. I'll be driving the long distance to Dyer, I don't have time or money to be throwing away for a veterinarian to be guessing what might be wrong with my dog. read more

This clinic is no longer Portage Animal Clinic, It is now Coyne Veterinary. Large chain of vet clinics in Chicago metro area. Took our kitten in to be spayed, and because I had a voucher from ICS for a reduced rate they tried to sell me every service from soup to nuts. Also tried to avoid numerous services that were included on the voucher. Had to watch them like a hawk. Never cleaned her ears which should be done to control ear mites. Also hit me up for an additional $30 fee for a surgical iv catheter. I also have 3 other cats that will no longer be going back there. Too bad for Coyne! read more

BEWARE! I recenty adopted a 4 year old dog from a local shelter and took her to the Portage Animal Clinic. I expected $51.00 for a wellness check in seven days as agreed to by the shelters guidelines. WHAT I DIDN'T KNOW WAS THAT JACKIE, A CLERK WOULD BE SURE MY DOG WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM ME. WHY? In a few short days I already came to love her so much! She went to work with me and was with me 24/7, she was so happy and had a good home. Because I couldn't spend the 300. to 600. in charges they wanted to hit me with THAT DAY! *The Vet himself told me the dog was fine...but I indicated I was concerned about her left eye as it looked blurry. I asked if it was infected, he said "No," I asked if she had vision and could see, he said "Yes." He said she may have had an eye injury years ago and looked into her eye with a lighted scope. He asked if he could perform a 300. occular test that day and I said not today, I couldn't afford it. My dog had been biting and chasing her tail, but was not anxious otherwise, she was gentle and rarely even barked. He said she may be anxious and had "Happy Tail" from being locked in a kennel at the shelter. The vet said dogs have their tail cut off...shorter and shorter...and this scared me! I have only had two dogs in my life and each lived for 13 years....from MY experience, I felt I needed to give her a couple of days to get adjusted to me and her new home and we could see if she stopped. He bandaged her tail and applied a salve, that the smell of it would deter her from the habit. He prescribed barbituates, "dog valium" which I found out about when I checked out later. He also precribed an eye drop even though her eye was not infected. The bill for the medications was another 100. or so a month, so I told the clerk I would need to pick up the medicines in a week or so once I got paid. I decided to get her rabbie booster shot that day for 18.00 on that 300. visit as another visit would have been 51.00 MORE to get her rabbie tag. Just moving back to this area I wanted to check out other vets, as I was not comfortable with this one and get a second opinion....the prospect of cutting off my dogs tail and putting her on barbituates was too much to take lightly. I sent in the paperwork to the shelter, said that BELLA was doing great and had some issues. The shelter personnel called JACKIE at the Portage Animal Clinic and she told them that I refused medical care for BELLA and that she was very sick and needed medical attention...and that I wouldn't even get her the shot she needed. THIS IS A LIE. Based on THE VETS REPORT and the fact that I was taking my dog to work with me everyday where I stay overnite often as a Nanny in Portage, where there is a fenced in yard that has been safety checked and not keeping her in my duplex in Lake Station, where there is also a fenced in yard (where I LIVE to help with my parents medical care I was informed by the SHELTER that I had to return BELLA to them within the HOUR or the POLICE WOULD ARREST ME!!!!!!! The shelter said the medical report and the fact that I wasn't keeping BELLA in Lake Station all the time and taking her to work with her in Portage, meant they could arrest me for FRAUD! Can you believe THIS?????? I cried buckets of tears and BELLA was very upset too. I am so upset about this I have retained a LAWYER to fight and INVESTIGATE this decision, there has to be more to this. I can't help but believe that THIS VET and the Shelter are somehow connected financially? This is so difficult to UNDERSTAND? WHY? They indicate in their mission statement that they are a PARTNER in your pet's care. HOW UNTRUE!!! BEWARE!!!!! read more

I took my puppy there for the first time and they made me feel so welcomed. The staff and the doctor was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. As a first time pet owner with a 7 week old pup, my husband and I had lots of questions and they gave us all the answers we needed. It was clean and nicely decorated. The service was also fast. I love it, and Dolce(my puppy) was comfortable as well! If you have animals this is a great place to take them. read more

I took imy daughter's friend (17 years old) and her cat to Coyne because no one in her household was able to take them. Unfortunately, the cat was very ill and had been for some time. His labs were off the charts and it was apparent that his kidneys had been shut down, possibly for days. Dr. Dendrine (Dr. Dittmer) was absolutely wonderful with this obviously devastated young lady. She explained the severity of the issue and never pushed for treatment that she knew was not going to save him. This young lady would have gladly spent every last cent she had made in the past few years at her part-time job, but Dr. Dendrine got on her knees, held her hands, and explained that no amount of money nor treatment was going to make him completely better ever again. Too much damage had been done. His body temperature was very low and he was already in the process of passing away. She sat with us for a long time, compassionately sympathizing and explaining the euthanasia process. Gave us time alone to digest the situation. We were there about 3 hours in all. When it was time, she again got down on her knees, wrapped the cat in a blanket, and gently took away his pain. I was so impressed that I transferred care of our cat there when she needed to been seen a few weeks later. I can't recommend them (especially Dr. Dittmer/Dendrine) enough! read more
