The staff is completely incompetent. They lost the sample I brought in so I had to drop a second one. My dog was recently scheduled for a neuter. They didn't provide a cone until I insisted then gave me a ridiculously too small one so I had to buy a different one. When I wanted him seen days later, the Dr disregarded my concern and said it was because he licked the area. Well duh but he's in significant pain every time he moves. I have not mentioned all of the scheduling issues I've had or the lack of communication I've experienced from them or straight up lies I've been told. Skip this place! read more

Horrible Doctor!! He literally pulled my poor scared puppy across the room by his neck. I ran through the door to grab my puppy to stop him and rudely yelled at me not to come in back by them! Then Dr.Sam looks at me and says, I don't like the way he's looking at me... as he's got a death grip on his neck with a noose. What kind of Vet is afraid of a dog let alone a small puppy?!! I was so sick to my stomach of the scene I had just witnessed I was on pins and needles till he got back. Afterwards puppy was so traumatized that as soon as we got home he ran under the bed and wouldn't come out for a day. Shame on you Dr. Sam! I'll spread the word of how awful you treated my poor scared puppy. I should've actually known better because before I went here a friend told me not to. He told me that Dr. McPheron took his dog in back to get his weight and ended up giving him a ton of shots without my friends permission that he had to pay for. Very good vet. He is knowledge, explains things to me very well, and reasonably priced. They do take the dogs in the back room to check them out. This makes sense to me. I do not need to watch the doctor examine my dog. If your dog needs surgery would you want the doc to do that in the room so you can watch that also? The office is clean and tidy, and I always feel welcomed. Since I started using McPheron Animal Clinic my whole family and close friends take thier dogs to Dr. Sam also. The only place I've ever taken my 11 year old Boxer. Two weeks ago I took her in for a ear hematoma, Dr came in looked at it & said she needed surgery: "it's the only way to heal a ear hematoma" Me: ok, I trust you dr, I'll do what you say Gave her antibiotics, set surgery date and sent us home. While at home the next day, she shakes her heard & breaks open the hematoma (blood everywhere), I call vet office: Dr said she still needs surgery, or else it will return I take her in the day of the surgery, dr walks in, looks at the ear and said: "No surgery is needed she is healing fine" Me: Ok, but you said without surgery, it will return Dr: "It's fine, continue to give antibiotics" I continue antibiotic treatment, but noticed that (what seemed like overnight) her hearing was gone, completely gone! I take her back in and dr seemed very dismissive when I pointed out that she can no longer hear, his exact words were: "Well she's 11 years old", then went on to recommend I take her to Purdue because there's nothing more her could do for her. All I know, is she has hearing when we took her in & now I have a deaf dog. read more

I saw this dr many years ago until he sold Bardens and the patients along with it. Within the past couple of years, I switched to him against my own judgment since they don't do the 3-year rabies shots... One of my dogs had renal failure and needed to be on a renal diet. Due to recent travel, I was trying to get a few cans of renal food from Petsmart and get other running done before the snowstorm hit. When I called asking if they could send a script I was put on hold and they told me there would be a $15 charge for a script or I could come in. I explained that I only needed a few cans until after the storms but they didn't care, I brought up they handle 3 of my dogs and they still didn't care. Once I was out of the store I called back to see if this was for real to which I was transferred to the office manager who stated she's always been on edge around me. Is it due to the fact that you have no areas for dogs that aren't pet-friendly? Is it due to me knowing I don't want my other dog to be sedated for every nail trim or do 3-4 laser pedicures a year as I don't need another animal with kidney issues? The bottom line, they chose to e-mail me my charts which I had to call back for as I never received them. The new vet told me they did not receive the rabies certificates either... sigh. Once received, they did not include previous charts that were sent to them and they noted that I give my oldest who has glaucoma marijuana which was against dr's recommendation. Of course, it's CBD which is hemp not THC from marijuana so whoever wrote this isn't even educated on the difference between the 2. Hopefully McPheron reads this himself so he will see what they have plagued my dog's chart with... Perhaps go to www.canna-pet.com so you guys can understand what I actually give my dog!!!!! When I was in there the dr actually told me if it makes her comfortable and I choose to do it then it makes her have a quality of life and he was happy with that. oh, he also missed a full tear in my 3rd dogs ccl... perhaps I should have ran sooner! Bottom line, it's not so much about the $15 charge as much as it's about them wanting to profit off dog food that was the final straw. Recpoinist called last week asking about prescription dog food from chewy I told her to cancel it. 85 came out of our account and food was delivered. Talked to chewy had to connect vet in regards to returning. Did nothing done then she proceeded to call me 10 minutes later to tell us after 10years to find someone else to take care of our dogs especially after we spent 160.00 2 days ago on our new puppy. I would give a less that 0 rating. I went to McPheron Animal clinic for 13 years since i got my puppy. She was up to date with everything. Last time she was at the clinic was a few months ago where she got a clean bill of health. Last Friday morning she looked like she had a stroke. She could not stand and keep falling over when we tried to help her. I called the office before they opened and left a message telling what was going on and that we be there at 8am when they opened. At 8:05 as we were in the parking lot, I called and said explained AGAIN what was going on and that now my baby was lethargic. The receptionist said she would talk to the doctor and get back to me. I told her we were in the parking lot and I was pretty sure my baby was dying. I told her i would hold. She got back on the line and said, "We are very busy. Doc said you could leave her here and when he got a chance he would look at her." I said you mean leave her there by herself and questioned what she had just said. I then told her no, I would never leave my dying dog alone to be seen when he got a chance and I also told her I would never step a foot in that place again as I was sobbing. I also told her that people don't care how busy you are when you are in their parking lot with your dying baby. We left, I called Coyne and explained the situation. They met us at the door and were wonderful. Immediately we were seen. Lacy had a cyst on her abdomen and liver. She was put to sleep in my arms about 45 minutes after we got there. I will never forget the compassionate care we received from Coyne. Saturday morning I went the website and emailed Dr. Sam about what had happened. As of this morning, Tuesday, I have not received any reply. This morning, I did receive an email trying to sell me some of there products. Now its to late for any kind of apology. Our family has been taking our pups do Dr. Sam for over 20 years. He is always compassionate and gentle with our dogs and us, as well. While our fur babies have not had any major issues, diabetes, heart problems, etc., the care he and his staff gives is exemplary. When it has come time to ease our pets' suffering, (one had a herniated disc in his back and lost mobility and developed pneumonia), he has helped our pups over the Rainbow Bridge in the most gentle way possible. They won't let you into the room to see the vet, your pet is seen in a separate room with you waiting, the techs (if that's even what they are) don't introduce themselves or tell you what they're doing, they aren't kind, and the place isn't clean. I would give a negative star if that was an option. I've been taking my animals to this office for many years. For the most part my animals have always been pretty healthy so it's always just been basic check ups. Let me start by first saying that I don't like the fact that my animal is never examined in my presence, they are taken out of the room and then the Dr comes in and speaks very quickly and moves you along. If your looking for a place to just give vaccinations and get you in and out this is your guy. He will stay on schedule, not spending much time answering questions. Friday I took my 10 year old lab in. I explained that he had a bout of diarrhea for a couple of days and went back to eating fine for a few days then no eating for a couple of days, then vomiting began. He's been obsessively drinking and even going outside and drinking from puddles which he's never done before. He's urinating for over a minute at a time. I tell the Dr. that I believe he's diabetic. Dr suggests that he might have a mass in his upper GI or an ulcer and suggest medicine to coat or band aid (his words) this ulcer which we don't even know if he has. My husband and I insist he do blood work. He does. We also mention a big weight loss, he tells us that this is the way he's suppose to look, with a nice flank. We said "he's lost 13lbs in just a few months". That seems like a startling weight loss. He gives us a can of prescription food and sends us on our way. We called Saturday morning and were told that his kidney levels were elevated. The start of kidney failure. We go in on Saturday afternoon because our dog is much worse. In our opinion he's critical. The tech comes out and takes our dog back and gives him fluids under his skin to hydrate him and if he isn't better by Monday they will hospitalize and push fluids for 3 days to flush the kidneys. The whole time we are asking to speak to the Dr, we have questions. He never comes out to the front . I say "so he's in kidney failure?" the tech says no his numbers are just elevated could be the start, but they aren't critical. Then why does he look critical? Again, they say take this food and try it. I'm now speaking to the receptionist Bonnie about my dislike that the Dr won't give use 5 minutes for questions and that if my dogs levels aren't critical, than why is he? Seems like the million dollar question. Needless to say we get home and within hours our dog is even worse. We head to North Central Veterinary Emergency Center in Highland and within the first 2 minutes without test. The Dr puts her face near his and says he's diabetic, I can smell the ketones. They immediately get the glucosometer and it's so high it's too high to register on the machine. So they run a blood panel and his sugar is off of the charts. His ketones are so high, he has pancreatitis and pneumonia and the kidney levels are elevated due to the diabetes. After two days of intense treatment all of his levels came back down to normal, but he just wasn't coming around. His body took a beating with everything that was wrong. On Monday our Buddy was euthanized. I'm not saying the Dr McPheron is the reason why my dog died, but I can't say he isn't either. My dog was 10, I was never offered a senior blood panel and for two years I mentioned his increased water intake Dr said that the joint chews he was taking are just loaded with sodium that's the reason for the water consumption. Today I get a sympathy card in the mail from them. It infuriates me. I decided to call, I wanted to know what his sugar level was from the blood work, Martha says "oh its HIGH well over 400". Why did no one mention his sugar on Saturday? They only mentioned his kidney levels. How do you over look levels this high? This man missed every sign and symptom imaginable. Either because he's completely incompetent, he doesn't want to screw up his schedule or he just doesn't care. Bottom line, I would never recommend this facility to anyone. read more

I just want to say that I had a terrible experience at this clinic and I thought other customers should be aware. I brought my 4 month old beagle pup in at the end of February because he was vomiting and having diarrhea. Turns out the breeder I got him from hadn't given him all his shots (which I was unaware of) and my dog had Parvo virus. From the diagnosis on everything about this place just sucked. The assistant came in and was so unsympathetic. Said my dog had a 50/50 chance to live and was basically like "oh well." Then asked if I wanted to treat or not. Of course I wanted to treat! Waited 30 something minutes for the doctor to see me because he was ARGUING in back with a vet tech because they didn't know what shots they had drawn up for a different patient. Which I could hear all about from my room! Then doctor comes in and gets MAD when my dog jumps on him! Because Parvo is contagious. I understand that, but other vets I went too were fully prepared with long robes to prevent the dog from touching there clothes. This doctor pushed my dog off and basically asked somebody to get it out of his face. Took my dog back to put him on an IV and he howled terrible while I sat in the waiting room and listened and cried. THEN I go to the front desk and BOTH of the secretaries gave ME shit about my dog having Parvo!!!!!! Like I was supposed to know better?!? It was my first puppy and the breeder assured me he had cared for him?! Sorry I trusted the wrong guy?!? Then, they never called me with check ups on my dog. I always called them. If I could've taken my dog somewhere else I would have. But this was the only place close who could get me in and keep him for the hospital stay. All I can say is that I hated this place. I would not recommend it. And I am so happy that my dog is healthy and that I'm taking him somewhere else. Terrible people. Terrible vet. read more

There are NO registered technicians on staff. Animals are handled roughly at times and are often so stressed they poop and pee all over themselves. He "fires" clients all the time if they even slightly disagree with his treatment. He has been heard in the waiting room and exam rooms yelling at his staff because of his temper. He talks badly about other vets. The only benefit is he is cheap but you get what you pay for. read more

Always searching for that special "Dr. Poll" . That vet you could trust who actually cared more about your animals well being apposed how much money they could charge you. Dr. McPheran is that vet who remembers your dog, who gets on the floor and rubs his belly, gives him treats and really tries to make a connection before he starts any treatment or exam. I've tried this animal clinic three times in the past 1 1/2 years and it has never gone well. The first visit was for vaccines for my three cats. Dr McPheron did not administer the shots in accordance with the most recent AVMA recommendations. I know he's been praciticing for a long time, so I let it slide, simply accepting that he's "old school." Then, I brought a new 8 week old kitten to him for vaccines and FELV/FIV testing. My kitten tested negative for feline leukemia and positive for FIV. Dr McPheron just showed me the SNAP test and didn't say anything else. My kids and I left heartbroken. After going home and doing my own research about FIV, I learned that SNAP tests for FIV antibodies and those antibodies can be passed onto kittens from their mother, resulting in false positives. The recommendation was to test at 6 months when the maternal antibodies are out of their system. Sure enough, when I had my kitten retested at 6 months (at Hanover Vet in Cedar Lake), he was negative. Huge relief but I was very unhappy that the information wasn't provided by Dr McPheron at the very beginning. The final straw was last week when my 13 years old cat develped a mass on his larynx. The only vet who was open when I could take him for an appointment was Dr Smith in Crown Point. After doing xrays, the diagnosis was grim. Within a couple days, my cat couldn't eat or drink, vomited blood and could barely walk. I called Hanover and Dr Smith for an appointment to euthanize but they didn't have appointments soon enough. I called McPheron and was treated with skepticism and contempt by the receptionist who answered the phone. I explained that my cat had a mass on his larynx and was slowly dying and that I wanted to put him to sleep. She put me on hold and then came back to tell me that they needed proof. I told her that I had the dvd of his xrays and she said "Well, we need records sent over." I was so distraught. Her insinuation was clear. She thought I was just looking to kill off my cat with no good reason. I told her to forget it and hung up. I ended up having to watch my cat suffer for two more days before I could get him in at Hanover. I don't recommend McPheron to anyone who genuinely cares about their pet and expects the staff to have a modicum of compassion, decency or respect when you've made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize. Hanover and Dr Smith are both fantastic clinics with amazing, compassionate doctors and staff. They will be the only vets that I allow to treat my pets from now on. read more
