We went to the Crab Shack after looking at the reviews. Most of the complaints dealt with the ambiance, and we didn't mind a dive so we checked it out. The restaurant isn't bad, but the food wasn't great either. I had blackened snapper and it was a bit overcooked, more charred than blackened, I'd recommend sticking to the fried options. I thought seriously about the Swamp Combination (frog legs, gator, and catfish), and I'd do that if I go back. The floors need to be removed and refinished. Had to be 3 or 4 different levels and types of tiles. Very uneven and cracked. We thought our waiter was high as we had to repeat how to split the checks for a party of 9 at least 5 times. The food - we had onion rings- good. Jalepeno poppers - good. (Why I gave 2 stars) The clam chowder tasted good, but was kind of gummy. Husband had fish and chips - batter lacked flavor but was crunchy. Coleslaw - flavorless. I had the broiled seafood platter with pretty much only "butter" for seasoning (I put that in quotes because the "butter" that was served with my baked potato was butter-flavored spread. So not sure if they had real butter in the joint at all). The cheese for my loaded potato was velveeta? Or cheese wiz? Unsure. The size of the piece of fish was the smallest piece of fish I've ever had, like 3 inches wide and 2 inches long. There were 5 small shrimp and 5 small scallops. The best part of my dish was the rice, but as a diabetic I could only taste a bite of it. Also, I was unsure about tartar sauce being kept on the table...isn't that a mayo-based sauce and needs refrigeration? Had I been consulted on choosing a restaurant, I would have said no to this one as I usually don't eat at less than 4.3 stars for a reason. read more

This is a great local place with some serious history. If you're looking for a place off the tourist trail, this is a great find. We've never had a bad meal here. The blue crab claws are one of our favorite items on the menu! All you can eat fish night is incredible. The fish portions are HUGE! The staff was friendly, inviting, and warm. We were confused initially if we should seat ourselves so we did. The service was very helpful as we needed some suggestions to get started. We came here primarily because of the soft shell crabs which was excellent. The Cajun Gator Sausage was a good suggestion to try something new and wasn't chewy as gator bites can be. We enjoyed that app with the yellow rice. We were seated quickly, but the place had 5 other patrons in it and they were already seated at a table and the bar so quick is what we expected and got. Our order was taken right away and our drinks arrived soon after. The food was served in a normal amount of time for a more crowded restaurant, but not overly so and our server walked away. We asked for some Tartar Sauce and that took about 5 more minutes. I cannot comment on the taste of the clams because they were ice cold, but the fries were hot as hell. We never saw our server again. She never came to check in on us, refresh drinks or wonder why we weren't eating our meal. The crab cake wasn't good either and we didn't eat much of it because it was that unappealing. So after waiting over 15 minutes for someone to come to the table I got up and stood under the cashier sign where I stood for another 5 minutes watching our server go through the days checks. When she turned and saw me she said "Need something?" I replied "Yes. To leave. I need the check." Well that took another 5 minutes while she fussed with some stuff on the bar, went to the back, and organized a few to go boxes. Another woman come up to me and asked if I needed help. I told her I was just waiting for my check. She wandered off never to be seen again. Finally my check came and the server walked away. I signed and walked out leaving the uneaten food on the table. For an appetizer, we ordered the Shack Blue Crab Claws (fried). Unfortunately, they were out of our first choice, their delicious Shack Mullet Spread. The crab claws were very good. However, the seasoning was a bit too salty for my taste. For entrées, we ordered a daily special, the Monday All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry. It came with tasty cole slaw and their delicious shoe string French fries. The fish was crispy and not at all oily. We didn't need to order any more fish because it came with a HUGE portion. This special is only on Mondays! Overall, this was a great, filling lunch. The ladies working there were friendly and speedy. I can definitely recommend the Crab Shack.
