It's late in the season and he explained all that he COULD do (if I wanted), but was very honest and explained that the weather was likely to take care of the issue on its' own. We've not yet had a visit from Jesse, but I called him to ask about some dog ticks we found on our bedcovers following a visit to a wooded area. Another regional company, which I had called first, recommended that I have them out for a $195 visit and enroll in a $109-per-month follow-up service. Part of the service included controlling for ticks in our yard, even though we were certain we picked up the ticks during the previous weekend's travels. The person on the phone gave no answers at all about the ticks, whether they could lead to an infestation, etc. After we texted Jesse a picture of the ticks, he identified them and said tick infestations are rare, we should wash our sheets in hot water and dry them on high heat, vacuum thoroughly, check with a doctor to see if there are any health concerns, and call him if we were still seeing ticks in a few weeks. I also mentioned our having seen a few cockroaches around the house. He gave similar advice: it's late summer; if you're not seeing more than a few, don't worry; and call back if you start seeing more. He even gave advice about duct-taping over the flashing in our vents if they had pulled away from the wood. I think the two negative reviews represent folks who misinterpreted his bluntness as a bad attitude. I found him to be straight to the point, knowledgeable, and honest even against his self-interest. So a long story short: I was prepared to spend money on two different; Jesse talked me out of it and instead gave me helpful free advice. This may have cost him some business today, but we now know whom to call if we have any bug problems in the future. read more

jesse, spent 15 minutes on phone with me making recommendations about terminte inspection companies and how to proceed if they find termites.... and he doesn't even do termite eradication anymore. the information was very helpful on next steps...and i appreciate him spending the time. for that i highly recommend anyone talking with him about any pest problem they might have.... i trust he'll let you know, if it's something he can do or not. told him i appreciate him building his business that way.... and that i'd use him in the future, if there was an opportunity. he said, that's why he does what he does..... great guy! read more

We have used Crabtree Pest Control since moving to Durham three years ago, first in our rental home to get rid of cockroaches, and now in the home we own to deal with ants, particularly fire ants, in our backyard. I can't say enough good things about Jesse Crabtree. He is not only an extraordinary exterminator, but an educator and a kind-hearted generous soul. Every time we have occasion to interact I learn about how to get rid of the current pest issue as well as how to deal with it in the future if the issue recurs. Every time Mr. Crabtree comes to our home I feel like I got a great deal more than I paid him for. For example, today, I learned a great tip about getting rid of voles, even though we were dealing with an ant problem. He also treated the ants and didn't want to charge me because he said it was a small problem! At the rental home, he didn't just spray for roaches, he taught us how to exclude them from entering our home in the first place. We followed his directions and it basically eliminated the problem. He has also identified weird bugs for me via email, and is prompt in answering email, phone and text. Over and over, he has put my mind at ease! I find Mr. Crabtree to be practical, ethical and very knowledgeable. I will never use another exterminator as long as we live in this area. Well, I can't actually speak to their services but I called today just to get an estimate and the man who answered the phone was too impatient to even answer my question. All I got was a "Hello?" when I answered, so I politely explained that I was interested in their general pest control services and also what they offered specifically for termites, and the gentleman barely let me finish before he interjected "we don't do termites" Umm. Okay, I was hoping to give you money to get rid of other things? I've called several of the other pest companies on Yelp and they at least pretended they were interested in my business! Will write a review on the quality of the actual service once I've settled on one, but these guys are out of the running. read more

Jesse is an extremely professional and honest business owner. He makes it a point to work with your schedule to come out, tells you everything he's going to do, and does it. Had a small group of tiny furry visitors to the house. Mr Jesse came out within 24 hours and treated the house not only for mice but roaches as well (didn't ask but much appreciated!). His prices are better than most of the big chain stores (although he does send his bill and gets paid via snail mail fyi, though not a big deal at all). Some reviewers have said he is rude or curt on the phone, but this is a misperception: Jesse is bluntly honest. He will tell you exactly what is wrong with your house that facilitates pests, whether he can help you or not, and gets to the point quickly. For you sensitive types I suggest just dealing with it bc he is actually a nice guy, does excellent work, and charges a better-than-fair price. Personally I find t refreshing. Use Crabtree Pest Control if/when needed and you will NOT regret it!!! read more

Crabtree is a small, mom-n-pop, business with a helpful heart. The owner has been nothing but knowledgeable and kind. Yes, he can occasionally talk over you but it's not in a malicious way. I found that if I closed my mouth and listened he was already covering what I was asking or going to ask about. We have a mouse or two in our place. He laid out bait, made sure that our dog couldn't get to it, and that we were alright with anything that he needed to use/do. He's told us what we should fix to keep the pests out. When inquiring about the bugs I've encountered (I'm not from this area of the country... at all) he was more than happy to explain what they are and how to deal with them. I hope I don't need him for much else but if I do.. I'm happy to have a prompt and helpful company to call upon. read more

Jesse came out after I told him that my wife had seen a few large roaches in the house in the last few months. He inspected the house and showed me where there had been some activity in the attic and under the sink. He recommended that we not pay him to do anything, that in this area that number of the big roaches at this time of year is inevitable. He showed me where some gaps are that I should fill to keep them out. If the problem gets worse, we will definitely call him. He's an honest man, and I can't recommend him highly enough. He could have sold us his service but he did what was right. That's very refreshing in this day and age. In contrast, I called another company who wanted to sign me up on an annual contract on the phone without even seeing the place. read more

Jesse came in and within five minutes told me that there wasn't much he could do about our roach problem. Our house is just too perfect for them. I really appreciate that kind of honesty from someone, and it shows they actually want to help rather than just get paid. He even told me that he wasn't going to charge me, because there wasn't anything that he could do that I couldn't do myself. And then he told me how to do it! Check! Check! I called CrabTree Pest Control because I had an insect/rodent issue, wasn't sure of the causes and definitely didn't know how to solve it. Great service. Had a suspicion of either mice, rats or squirrels and Mr. Crabtree told me that he'd be happy to come out to determine what the issue is at no cost. Once we determined that it was mice, he even offered to 'just pick up some kill at Lowes' - instead of taking him up on his generous offer, i asked him to spread some bait so that it was worth his time to come out. Look no further! We have wasps in our attic that have been finding their way into our bedrooms. Jesse called me back within minutes: he sat on the phone with me for 20 minutes patiently listening and then explaining what the situation likely was and why it was unlikely he could help because of how wasps act this time of year (and told me any other pest control company would be scamming me). Gave suggestions for what we could do, offered to come take a look around at no charge, and had me text a picture to make sure they weren't hornets. After realizing that no other pest control service would even get out of their truck for less than $100 (at least) Mr. Crabtree came by my house the day after I called him for a free evaluation of a couple hornet's nests and a general outside sweep. He was friendly, knowledgable, honest, and gave me all of the advice I would need to take care of the few issues I had myself as well as recommendations for general habitat control. He did give me a quote on taking care of the nests himself and his numbers were way below the competition. Crabtree is as good as it gets, when it comes to expertise, customer orientation, results, value for money, and trustworthiness. Mr. Crabtree has been courteous and professional whenever I have called (perhaps the negative reviewer who had a bad phone experience may have had a poor cell connection?). He has provided us service three pest problems, he has taken the time to understand the full scope of the problem and to talk extensively to educate us on the cause and the possible solutions, including the risks of various chemicals and how to manage the risk. He has actively tried to help us save money by showing us both insecticide we can apply ourselves as well as other steps we need to take as part of a solution -- e.g., removing damp wood that carpenter ants feed on, keeping drains plugged to prevent roaches from entering from the sewers. He's pretty clear that the customer needs to do their part if his interventions are going to work, while other exterminators we've called just apply a formulaic, expensive chemical treatment while trying to convince us to subscribe to a treatment plan. Not only does Jesse really provide a free consultation, he even wouldn't accept $ when he determined that we would be best served self-treating the problem and showing us what we needed for the job. I can't recommend Jesse strongly enough. If you're looking for a knowledgeable, trustworthy exterminator, this is your guy (especially if you have pets). I contacted him to ask for help with a triple threat situation -- fleas on my cats, and mice and roach droppings in my kitchen. He called me back right away and spent half an hour talking me through all my questions and concerns and giving me the confidence to go ahead and try to solve the problem myself before spending money on an exterminator (seriously, he spent half an hour talking me out of using his services, which is just above and beyond amazing). He gave me tons of information and DIY options to try, and really had mine and my cats' well-being and best interests in mind. Mr. Crabtree saved me $85, or $150, depending on how you look at it. He quoted me a charge of $85 for a one-time ant treatment. Other exterminators in the area charge $150 for the same service. I had another company treat the house for ants earlier this year but they wanted to charge me for a full service to come out and re-treat when the ants came back. Instead, I put out some ant bait and called Mr. Crabtree about a week later when my teenagers said they saw more ants in their bathroom. Mr. Crabtree carefully inspected the exterior of the house and found no ant trails. I took him up to the bathroom and we couldn't find any ants. I guess the bait worked. Mr. Crabtree said he'd be happy to spray the house again but advised me to save my money and call him back if I have another pest problem. So he spent at least half an hour inspecting my house and teaching me about pest control and didn't charge me a cent. read more
