Worst Cracker Barrel we have ever been to. We had to ask for silverware and napkins, we waited over an hour for our food, as we watched other tables who were sat after us, get their food and leave. When we finally received our food, our waitress pretty much threw a handful of butter or our table and walked away. When we asked her take the food off of our tab that we did not receive, she seemed shocked. Our waitress never brought us any condiments such as salt, pepper, or Tabasco when we asked for it. They were busy, but seemed to forget all about customer service. They could have brought some biscuits or something while we waited, but when we inquired about getting some biscuits... we got the inquisition about if it went with what we ordered. We just had dinner there. Very disappointed. We waited almost 2 hours to even get food. We received our meals, no silverware, my food was cold, so cold the gravy crusted over, my husbands food was wrong. We asked for silverware, the serve left and took other peoples orders, delivered their food and drinks, my husband had to get up and get silverware for us, no drink refills, I would have sent my cold food back had the serve returned to the table. Server never came back until he dropped off the bill, that we had to ask him to fix on account of my husbands incorrect order to remove the add on that he didn't receive. So I picked to come here to eat last night because it's one of my favorite places!!! A bit disappointed in our visit last night. I got the 6 piece tender meal which only came out with 5. No big deal... carrots were a little cold, broccoli was very plain, my dumplings however were delicious!!! This experience was so traumatic for me that it's hard for me to relive it by typing this review... however I will do my civic duty and warn those who are considering eating here. From the moment I stepped through the door, I felt as if I weren't a priority to the staff working within the restaurant establishment. Nobody helped me to my table to my utter astonishment, though there were a plethora of open options in which I would have gladly partaken. After a lifetime of waiting to be helped, I eventually sat myself down at a table due to my skyrocketing hunger. I was helped only after I tracked a waitress down myself, and I promptly ordered my drinks, appetizers, and food. It was another HOUR before everything was brought out at the exact same time, drinks as well. I was beyond parched throughout the dining experience, and the poor environment of the establishment certainly didn't help in the least. To say the food was horrid would be a compliment... the chicken fried steak was covered in the chunkiest gravy I have ever laid eyes on. It quite literally had the consistency of jello. The steak itself was so unbelievably dry that I literally couldn't even swallow a bite, as my saliva couldn't break down the morbid, malicious meat. Furthermore, the crust was basically nonexistent, and the steak had zero crunch. I'm not even gonna mention the mucus that was found in my green beans... due to the dry heaving that will inevitably follow as I type this (yes mucus). Cracker Barrel is pretty steadfast in their ability to make you question what state you're in when you eat there. Travelers like us gravitate towards Cracker Barrel because it is one of the few constants in a life of ever changing scenery. When we are sitting at the creaky wooden tables in front of the big fireplace we could be in Abilene, TX or the middle of Ohio...so long as you don't look outside you might never know. This time was no different, with the exception of some minor details I could nit pick (my toast was NOT sourdough and our waitress was SLOW to get going but warmed up nicely) but it's good, hearty, huge plates of food and a familiar and comfortable atmosphere. Waitress had to be told to fill up my tea and take my menu and take used plates away. No sense of urgency with ANY OF THE STAFF! I was SO disappointed in this stop after driving 5 hours (and having 4 more to go). My goal is not to rage on the restaurant BUT to SAVE YOU FROM STOPPING ON A LONG DRIVE!! My meal took about twice as long as it should have & even getting my salad comped (as if that helped this terrible experience) can't take the place of crappy kitchen service and untrained wait staff. I stopped her with my 7yr so she could enjoy the country store & standard "kid food" and I could have a nice hearty salad. Our order was taken and my grilled chicken salad with no tomatoes arrived WITH tomatoes, about 100 giant croutons...and ZERO chicken. My server noticed as I was looking at it that it had no chicken. It was literally a bowl of lettuce, 2 deviled egg halves and a sprinkling of cheddar cheese. I was IMMEDIATELY regretting not stopping at the Chilis across the parking lot for an awesome salad. Server rushes back to kitchen for chicken...comes back with chopped up fried chicken. *sigh* It took me that long to unload all the JUNK (yes, I consider 100 croutons in a salad junk!) from my plate with the tomatoes. Back with grilled chicken - which looked burnt and I can't even describe what the plate looked like...let's just say it had a brown smear (from the chicken I'm sure) and it looked disgusting. At this point I'm STARVING and annoyed that I've added an hour to my trip for a terrible meal. I had to GET UP to get the manager to show him my plate. While he "fixed it" I continued to eat my big bowl of lettuce with cheddar...for another 20 min. I had to explain a few times what was wrong with the nasty plate of side chicken served to me 20 min after my salad got there. And I explained it didn't cost any less to eat at Cracker Barrel over Chili's and their presentation would never be so terrible. But let's get this clear - I was HUNGRY! I finally got beautifully grilled chicken at the end of my meal (I mean my giant bowl of lettuce). Was NEVER given the chance to ask for more ranch (it ran out long before the lettuce did, and I was ready to GO before the chicken ever arrived. Needless to say I didn't hold my brand-new server completely accountable and tipped him. After all, if HE doesn't know you don't serve that to customers...that's bad training. Overall TERRIBLE experience! Go to Raising Cane's or Chili's if you want solid, consistency with good food and service. As I left I looked over to the Walmart in the same parking lot & thought of the fact I could have purchased a bag of lettuce, a jar of ranch dressing & some shredded cheddar and eaten it straight from the bag and enjoyed it more. It's one thing when you get neglected by a waitress, you can always complain to the manager. Our waitress was great until our breakfast was late and we discovered it had been given to another customer by mistake. We actually saw it happen because an obviously new employee delivered it to the table right next to us and then they complained that the eggs were wrong. After about a 30 minute delay, we were fed. The manager said she was sorry, Sorry? That's what you offer a patron? What about some compensation for failing to train or keep an eye on a new employee. What about easing off of our check a little? How about a coupon for a a meal? Hell, how about a free cup of coffee? The management here has a lot to learn about taking care of the customer. We won't be back. Dave O. read more

We had breakfast here on Friday morning I gave it a 2 star rating because the food was mediocre. We'll start this review off from the moment we walked in . Once inside the ladies that host was very very friendly. She took our names for a table and was nice to give us a head up it would be a 10-15 min wait . We walked the store which was very well maintained and kept clean . Are table was ready 8 mins after we signed in a was seated . Our waitress came and took our order for drinks and gave us time to look through the menu. We waited about 15mins for our food ( give or take) I got the tenders with eggs and other items . The tender was hard and lukewarm . My gravy for the the biscuits was sold and cold and the biscuits where hard . The bacon was on the burnt side and we didn't see our waitress or the remaining time we where there . My son had sausage patty and they where still uncooked in the inside . My wife and daughter kept it simple pancakes , eggs and coffee for the mrs. I gave 1 star to the store , 1 star to the hostess and her out stand job she does. Our experience this morning started on a sour note when our server, Katelyn (wearing 4 stars on her apron) came to take our drink 'and' food order after we had been seated for at least five minutes. Katelyn seemed less than pleased that we wanted to enjoy our coffee for a moment before ordering food. She returned to our table with two empty coffee cups and asked for our food order. When I stated again that we'd like to have our coffee first, she replied, with some distaste, that it was brewing. We told Katelyn thanks as she turned without a word and skittered away. When Madison (with no stars on her apron) showed up at our table with a smile and friendly demeanor, we were surprised that Katelyn had deserted us. I can't say we were disappointed! Madison was a breath of fresh air for the remainder of our dining experience. The 's on the aprons must not have anything to do with customer service! I've never been disappointed by a Cracker Barrel until my experience last weekend. (I've been to so many in my life and travels.) I would give every other CB experience their deserved five stars, but this experience was awful. I'll never go to Abilene's CB again. Everything was just "off" to say the least. Nobody was friendly like usual cracker barrel and strange rock music was playing (I love rock n roll, but expect a level of calming Christian/CB normal when eating at CB). When seated, our server took a coffee cup off a table she was bussing (THAT WE WITNESSED?!) and poured coffee in it for me. It had a hair in it. I stated kindly that I would like a clean mug. She then pulled the hair out and told me it couldn't be hers because it was blonde like mine and not hers. Then she stared at me. I asked again for a new mug. (Awkward since I hate confrontation, used to wait tables myself so I'm extra kind to servers, etc!) Eek. Her body language was super annoyed to grab a "new one" around the corner. She told my friend they didn't do blackberry compote anymore for pancakes (even though clearly it's on the menu). The experience here was so weird for CB. I looked around and most people working there seemed to be working in slow motion and sad. Very bizarre. The two stars here are for the chefs who at least prepared a pretty consistent meal for what I expect at CB. read more

#319-2016: Cracker Barrel is one of those few things I truly do miss about Abilene and my Texas experience. I know I may sound insane, but it is the tacky and ostentatiously country (almost fake) feel that every franchise has within their restaurant. I normally am not a huge fan of anything country, but comfort food and large portions at these establishments make for a luxurious and decadent exception to the rule. I am a sucker (and truly miss) their whipped cinnamon butter as well as their complimentary biscuits and jelly. I have been able to sample quite a few different dishes and I particularly loved their okra and mashed potatoes. Their steaks were equally good whilst I didn't care much for their chicken or chicken dumplings. Beware of their sweet tea... it is cavity in the making. Just order unsweetened and ask for some sugar to make sweeten yourself (I personally had mine with none). Their gift store has a great variety of vintage candies as well as many knickknacks I find extremely expensive. All in all, if you feel like comfort food in the city of Abilene, this is the place to enjoy it. Service is not always optimal and attentive but it can get pretty busy and they at least make an effort. read more

Stopped to eat here on our trip and it was a pretty poor experience for a Cracker Barrel! The manager blamed the new server for our 30 minute wait on food which we found unprofessional, then did not handle my moms frustration very well either to only set her off more! We found out from tables around us that they were experiencing issues as well with mismanaged seating and waiting for drinks and orders. The table next to us (party of 8) was split up after waiting for their table that was given to another party! She informed us that service has been poor for a month or so and our experience confirmed it! Won't be stopping through there anymore as we pass through Abilene. read more

My family came here twice. Only because this was the only Cracker Barrel in Abilene. Note, according to other reviews and my own experience, this is notoriously SLOW location. I don't know if they don't have enough cooks or what, but I've been to other Cracker Barrel that was just as busy if not more, that had better service than this location. Food came out borderline cold, waited 25 minutes to even get a drink, waited about 40 minutes for food. And the waiter rarely came by. It wasn't great. We usually love the Cracker Barrel, but this proved to be loud, not very comfortable, and the waitress had an attitude the entire time. It was very, very crowded, so expect your dinner to be very loud. If you're not found of loudness, this isn't a place for you. The waitress was absolutely rude. When I requested ketchup, she rolled her eyes at me and didn't bring it for another ten minutes until I requested it again. Then, when she finally did bring it, she slammed it down on the table and walked away without saying anything or making eye contact. Also, I only got one drink refill while I was there - my glass stayed empty most of the time. The onion rings were overcooked and tough - and while the main course was alright, I would have been better off cooking at home, and I would have enjoyed it a lot more. I might try it again in the future on a less crowded evening, but never again when there's a crowd. Their waitstaff just don't have the ability to handle a crowd professionally. I left her a 5% tip. This is our second attempt at enjoying a meal here. The wait was an hour, but that's expected on a Sunday at midmorning. What isn't expected is to be asked to move to a different area when you're waiting in the store, then be directed to a very in-the-way area with a lot of fragile merchandise... we have three young children. Also not expected is undercooked (first visit)/overcooked (second visit) sirloin steak, skimpy servings of grits and gravy, and one employ that appeared to be so under the influence he couldn't properly lay out menus or install a booster seat. As expected, the coffee, sweet tea, and biscuits were tasty and in abundance. The wait staff was prompt and courteous even if a little frazzled and harried. I have a wife who has an insatiable appetite for pancakes. Cracker Barrel always seems to come through with delicious breakfast and brunch items served all day, every day. Lunch and dinner menu is available all the time too...but come on...we know we all want breakfast for lunch or dinner sometimes. This is the place to get it. Cracker Barrel does have a 'rustic' old time look to it, but the food and service are as modern as you would expect them to be. A great place to stop if you're traveling or if you're in the mood for comfort food. Be sure to save a little room for dessert and take some time to check out their 'country store' gift shop. She had a big top right next to us and never came over to say "hey guys I'll be right with you.", I'm a waitress myself and this was awful service. Cracker Barrel is usually always good, but this restaurant was incredibly slow. We came here for lunch while traveling back home. Although we had a seven people group, we saw so many people get their servings first. We had to wait quite a while for our food and drinks to be served to us. It took a long time just to get a refill on my drink. There weren't all too many people in the restaurant at the time and we were still slowly served. It took more than 20 minutes just to get the cornbread and biscuits! The wait would have been all worth it if the food was great, but they messed up on the food twice. I placed a to go order the night before and Had it scheduled for 8:30 AM the next morning. The order was over 30 minutes late and half of the ingredients/sides were missing. I got dishes that were supposed to have fruit, tomato slices, and potatoes all of which were not included in the bag. I didn't get 2/3 proteins. I pretty much got the eggs and maybe potatoes on all 3 dishes. I rarely visit Abilene and they offered to credit a meal at their location the next time I "stopped through". I asked to get at least a partial refund and my request was denied. Wouldn't bother ordering here again. When you go to Cracker Barrel you know what you're going to get, cafeteria quality food in a fun country atmosphere. Casual and comfortable, and with that usually quick because how long does it really take to heat up some canned green beans? That being said, this review has nothing to do with the quality of the food because our expectations were set low. We were seated with our small child under 3, and then waited an entire 10 minutes before a server even came to ask us if we would like water. It was morning and breakfast time, but also a Monday so not busy at all. By that time we already had our orders ready because we had waited so long. We were told that they were "all out of pancakes" at 9:45 a.m. which seemed odd, but whatever. (The time before that we went during lunch time on a Monday also, they were all out of mashed potatoes) our server was kind enough to bring a biscuit and egg for our child so she didn't have to wait long, which was great, however, my husband and I waited an entire 30 minutes for our breakfasts after our daughter was brought hers. Our server then said, "I thought they forgot all about your food!" (Yeah lady, we did too.) Our server never checked on us after she brought our food until she brought the check. What I'm getting at is if you have plenty of time to sit and wait and don't care if you get lousy service then definitely eat at the Abilene Cracker Barrel. For us, if we are required to wait a full 40 minutes to eat, we are going to need a more entertaining game at the table than those stupid pegs on the triangle. read more

We love cracker barrell. It's a good stick to your bones type of place, very country cooking. You know where potatoes in all forms are "veggies". We had lunch there today and the fried catfish was wonderful as always. Their chicken and rice is very good too, bit I hate that it's only made one day a week. I like to order that when I have a wish for my mom's chicken and rice and I can't get to it. The white gravy is terrible. I'm not sure why people eat it. I personally would rather eat white country gravy from a McCormick packet. And their pancakes are nothing like IHOP that's for sure, yuk. But everything else is wonderful. I've never had a problem with the staff. And I love that the older ladies work the sales floor they're super sweet and always want to know about your babies and your day.
