    Fries
    Chase F.

I was in Birmingham this week and was walking around looking for some sort of local place to eat at and came across this place, Crafts. I checked the reviews and to be honest they were mixed. I was feeling like some fried chicken and since I was in the south I thought I'll try to this place. This place is sort of off the beaten path along with some other restaurants. The store front looked nice. I was suprised by how big the inside was. I walked in and this place was huge. Maybe 30 tables? There were a lot and unfortunately it was pretty empty but the place was clean! Maybe I came in an off time. The menu had all sort of stuff on it from salads to sandwiches to fried chicken and chicken tenders and so on. It was a good selection. The person taking the order was extremely nice and patient. I couldn't decide if I wanted the traditional fried chicken or the tenders. I picked the tenders with fries and a sweet tea. They gave me a number and I sat down. It took probably 10 min to get my food which meant they were actually cooking it fresh. My food came and it was a lot of food. I ordered the 6 piece tender and I should have got the 4 piece. These were thick hand breaded tenders. The coating was crispy, and it was very well seasoned. These were not bland at all. The fries now were awesome and something I never had before. These were almost like potato wedges but were spiral. They were thick, with a lot of surface area on them so they got very crispy on the outside but really tender on the inside. It was amazing. To top it all off as well the person taking my order gave me 10% off because it was my 1st time there. Which was nice. Overall this place is a go again. The food was good, the wait staff was amazing and nice, and the restaurant itself was clean.

Breakfast Sausage Burrito and breakfast Chicken Burrito with tots (included) and homemade salsa.

My boyfriend and I went for breakfast today randomly, not knowing what to expect. Craft's exceeded all expectations. I think everyone should give it a try! Ms Cathy (I think is her name, I'm sorry I forgot!) provided the most outstanding and thoughtful service. We ordered the sausage breakfast burrito and the chicken breakfast burrito and split a coffee. She brewed a new pot even though we came right toward the end of the service. The portions were insane for only $6 per meal (because tots are included). It was warm and delicious, especially topped with the homemade salsa and filling. We both brought home leftovers. They're unfortunately not open on the weekends, because most of the foot traffic is from UAB. Send these folks some love!!!!

All in all I will say this place is good. It just needs a few tweaks. For instance, the fried okra is just OK. It has not much seasoning, but luckily the sauces that you can dip add in a majority of the flavor. The chicken bites themselves they are quite big for the price so can't complain about that. Also, just an FYI the chicken only comes in two flavors (which isn't bad, I would just expect a chicken place to have a little more variety in flavor ) However, they were Luke warm not hot not necessarily fresh. Although they did not come as hot as I would like them too they still were quite tasty. Also, why do I have to get a biscuit. I would prefer it if I could substitute the biscuit for a smaller proportion of another side because I don't want a biscuit. But if you like biscuits like that good. However, this biscuit was rock hard, and was not warm at all. And had no flavor. Will I be back? MAYBE, will all of my food be hot? Unsure. The service was fine, very nice workers. The restaurant was very clean and neat. Nothing negative to say there.

Half greek salad with grilled chicken added. Delicious and great price!

Great food and fast service! Large portions! Definitely recommend! I will be back to try more items off the menu!

3 piece tender with fries. Sauces are Dat Sauce and Honey Hot Sauce

The restaurant is extremely clean and nice. I ordered the 3 piece tenders with fries, and it comes with a biscuit. I was recommended to try the Dat Sauce and then I picked the Honey hot sauce since I generally like Hot Honey. The cashier was extremely friendly as well as the kitchen staff. It's also nice that UAB employees and students get 10% off! I had a 7 minute wait since they were cooking the chicken fresh, which I appreciated and didn't mind. The food came out hot and remained hot on my walk back to the office. The fries were great, they are a mix between wedges and curly and I would honestly get just fries. The tenders were HUGE and had a good flavor. I did like the Dat sauce but was not a fan of the Honey Hot sauce mostly cause there wasn't much of a honey flavor and was mostly just hot. The biscuit was soft and good. I would definitely recommend this place!

Honey Hot Chicken Wrap with Mac and Cheese
    Jamie R.

The facility was clean and the staff were cordial. However, the food itself was subpar. The chicken wrap I had was relatively dry with little to no flavor. I could pass on the mac and cheese. It just wasn't for me. They were training new staff when I visited so service was understandably slow. Probably won't be back.

Hot Bites from the starters menu and Mac 'n' cheese!!

Soup changes daily and this day was chickpea and chorizo. Nothing life changing about it but it wasn't bad. We walked into a small, dark, crowded dive bar and ordered amongst several other people after waiting in line shoulder to shoulder with other customers. I say this not to complain (because with a crowd like this on a random weekday, they're obviously doing something right) but to take your kids in car seats (‍) with caution. Crowds in small spaces stress me out and it would have been even worse if we'd had the boys with us. I'd also highly suggest going on a day when you can sit outside. There's very minimal seating inside. They do have a lovely, spacious patio that also feels like a garden with plenty of trees for shade. However, they make it clear they don't want dogs there. Parking was horrific. A narrow street with cars on each side. We barely fit through it. If there wouldn't have been an open spot on it, I'm not sure what the next option is because I didn't see anywhere else and this street only held so many. I would dine here again because the sandwiches were fresh and delicious and they obviously know what they're doing! I was pleasantly surprised that they had prosecco as well. Just heed my few warnings and you'll enjoy as well!

My friend ordered the chicken kabob entree but the man quickly told us it would be a 20 minute wait. I appreciated that he let us know since we were on a hour lunch break. He did recommend the lunch special alternative which she went with. I got the mushroom and Swiss burger. I absolutely loved the patio area. It's actually the only seated dining option since the inside is only big enough for ordering. Our food came out pipping hot which was nice! The burger and fries are a great portion for the price. I was a little disappointed that there was mustard on my burger. However that's my fault! It's clearly on the menu I just didn't pay close enough attention. I'm a huge mustard hater so that threw me off. The fries looked delicious but they were just a tad undercooked for my liking. Definitely not raw, just not cooked long enough. I used to frequent a bakery that was on this strip but I never saw this quaint little deli. The staff was pleasant as we looked over the menu. I ordered the chicken kebabs and my friend ordered the Philly with fries. Later he added a plain cheeseburger just to try it. He said his Philly didn't have much meat and he didn't care for the wrap. He thought it was going to be a traditional sandwich. However, my chicken kebab meal was flavorful and delicious. I didn't like the salad dressing that came on the salad, but that's just my particular preference. Everything was very fresh and was enough for two meals. I particularly enjoyed the outdoor seating on this nice Fall afternoon. We had differences of opinion on the burger. I thought it had a great taste-seasoned well, and fresh. My friend wasn't impressed and mentioned that it came out too fast to have been made fresh. I would love to go back and order one with all the trimmings to get a more accurate account as to how to rate it. I will definitely return to try more menu items.

While none of them have tasted quite as good since then (something about working up an appetite on the beach?), we still really enjoy a rare opportunity to eat at one. I knew we would be ready for lunch after a morning at a local museum, so I had researched possible venues earlier that morning. I showed my wife a short list and she immediately gravitated to Roly Poly. That would have been my first choice too. This one (the last one remaining in Birmingham, apparently) is in the Homewood neighborhood / area. It is located on a busy street with shops and plazas lining both sides. These look like they were built no later than 1950 but have evolved and been renovated as new tenants cycled through. We did angled parking on the street out front, but there may be better / easier parking on surrounding side streets. The only issue we had was backing out into traffic when we left; it took a few minutes for a gap. You enter and order at the counter. They have menus available there for you to check out. They have a rack of chips available, plus maybe other sides? I didn't look beyond the chips. You then sit down and wait for your order. I guess they have call-ahead too. Seating is along the wall to the right as you enter. There is a long bench the length of the wall with separate 4-person tables spaced along it, with 2 additional chairs each. Our order seemed to take a while, but it may have just been what we ordered (hot sandwich) versus other simpler orders getting filled faster. I got the French Twist, which is my favorite. I only got a regular and not a large, but I think I could have finished a large. My wife got something else, chicken-based I think. We both enjoyed this a lot. If I lived in the area, I'd probably stop in here semi-regularly.
