    a hot dog and chips
    Keisha T.

I ate at his spot today and it was really good. It is right around the corner from my office so a nice little walk. Upon entering, the outside looked clean. As I entered, very small place and several people inside eating. The young lady who took my order was very polite and really good at discussing the menu. I ended up with the Pop's Hot Beef (Special) Dog with a bag of chips and a drink. Let me tell you, it was delicious! The place was very clean and there were no COVID precautions. The environment was very nice and friendly.

The best little breakfast spot! Amazing food and even nicer staff. We went before work one day and it was a great start to our day. We will definitely be back to try more!

Called in an order 20 minutes before I arrive got there in the order was not ready Ordered a BLT sandwich with extra mayo and that's all. Waited 15 minutes inside. 30 minute lunch gone. Customer asked female at the front counter to change her gloves. Bcus she in fact handled several debit cards, cash, the phone to take orders, and the grill utensils several times while I was standing there. This woman got a clean glove with the nasty gloves and just put the glove over the nasty ones. Omfg. I finally get my food and I have a scatter of greasy fries even though I didn't order them and my damn sandwich has ONE piece of burnt to crisp as bacon. $8 for one piece of damn bacon that I can't even bite through. I am pissed to say the very least. I absolutely loved the menu when I searched for places near my new job but this was UNFORTUNATE AND UNFORGETTABLE. Wasted lunch and nasty staff.

Pop's Hot Beef Special with fries

I got the Pop's Hot Beef Special with fries and a sweet tea. My wife got the Slaw Dog with fries and a coke. Both were fantastic. The hot dogs were juicy and the fries were cooked perfectly. The service was excellent as always. The girl at the counter is always fast and friendly. She has the best personality. The food came out quick and she served it to our table instead of us having to pick it up. The vibe is so cool here. They have great retro memorabilia and autographed comics and artwork. It's always such a fun experience. The price might be high for some for a hot dog, but I feel like the experience and service definitely make it worth it. I did not see any COVID protocols in place. Like much of the city, Pop's seems to be over COVID and back to full service business.

The overcooked 3 strips of bacon on the Pop's Bacon BLT with the less than hunk of bacon

I had a craving for a BLT and chose to order from Pop's. Looked at the menu and there are 2 types of BLT: $5.49 Breakfast BLT(no description) and $9.99 Pop's Bacon BLT (Hunk of Bacon, Lettuce, Tomatoes). Since I wanted a hefty portion of bacon on my sandwich, I opted to to order $9.99 Pop's Bacon BLT with chips. I receive my order and I am ready to dig in. To my disappointment, my sandwich had 3 little slices of overcooked bacon. I was crushed but I proceeded to eat it. it was bad. The tomatoes weren't fresh, wilted lettuce and crumbly toasted bread. So because I was so uneasy with the sandwich, I called to get clarification on what I ordered/paid for and what I received. The employee that answered the call was rude. I explained to her what I ordered and expected. She then tells me that the sandwich only comes with 3 strips of bacon. So I ask her to explain the difference in the Breakfast BLT and Pop's Bacon BLT. She tells me the only difference is the Breakfast BLT doesn't come with chips. So I am extra confused now. The description of the Pop's Bacon BLT states a hunk a bacon and that's not the case. The employee let me know that 3 strips is the max on the hunk of bacon blt. I asked her what the additional $4 was for and she stated the chips. The chips are listed on the menu for $1.99 a la cart. She concluding the conversation as she was too busy to be bothered by saying she will change the menu to reflect 3 strips of bacon for the sandwich. Pop's doesn't have to bother themselves with me having an issue with them any more as I will never be back. The entire experience including the food as lackluster.

My daughter and I had been looking for a black owned business and this place was one of their suggestions. This place was awesome and the food was delicious!!! I recommend it to everyone!!!!

I came to Pops with two friends on a recommendation. I was told that Pops had great burgers. You may not know me, but burgers are one of my weaknesses. So, I rushed over at the first opportunity. There isn't much seating in the restaurant, but it wasn't very crowded at the time we went. The place looks like it's been there a while. They don't seem too concerned with decor, but that doesn't bother me. Show me the burger. I ordered an original with a side of fries. One of my buddies did the same while the last got a couple hotdogs. The food came out and I became excited. The burger is a good size and the fries looked crispy and good. The burger tasted great. The bun wasn't my favorite, but it didn't distract from the meat. I'd get one again; however, I think I'd get bacon and cheese next time. The bacon looked like it would have been an amazing addition. My friend thought the hotdogs were ok. He wished he got what we got. I hear that others rave about them...but I'd probably just stick with burgers. I'll be back. Definitely a good option in Birmingham. Happy dining.

    Looks can be deceiving!

They take absolute care and pride in everything--even the eggs were extra tasty and their breakfast sandwiches....yum. Most of the pastries are made with sourdough (except danishes, cookies, muffins). And they are top notch. Tender, buttery, flavorful, no skimping on anything. Just plain delicious. Bought more to save for afternoon coffee. The Friday offerings of challah, rye, and bagels are not sourdough but made with great care--even the bagels are made using tangzhong and cold proofed for 48 hours. Even those who do not emote about food and those carefully counting macros and calories in our family were impressed, vocal, and eagerly finishing off all of the offerings, sweet and savory. The space itself is beautiful--clean, intentional, and unique--with visual nods to milling and baking traditions. You can see elements of the mill and wheat motifs in the background, which adds a quiet sense of craftsmanship and history without feeling staged. The pastries are exceptional. The baguette is crisp on the outside, tender inside--everything you want it to be. Every item feels carefully made, never rushed. What stands out most is the consistency and care. A true standout in Birmingham and absolutely worth returning to.

My friend ordered the chicken kabob entree but the man quickly told us it would be a 20 minute wait. I appreciated that he let us know since we were on a hour lunch break. He did recommend the lunch special alternative which she went with. I got the mushroom and Swiss burger. I absolutely loved the patio area. It's actually the only seated dining option since the inside is only big enough for ordering. Our food came out pipping hot which was nice! The burger and fries are a great portion for the price. I was a little disappointed that there was mustard on my burger. However that's my fault! It's clearly on the menu I just didn't pay close enough attention. I'm a huge mustard hater so that threw me off. The fries looked delicious but they were just a tad undercooked for my liking. Definitely not raw, just not cooked long enough. My friend enjoyed her food for the most part but it was nothing to rave about.

I used to frequent a bakery that was on this strip but I never saw this quaint little deli. The staff was pleasant as we looked over the menu. I ordered the chicken kebabs and my friend ordered the Philly with fries. Later he added a plain cheeseburger just to try it. He said his Philly didn't have much meat and he didn't care for the wrap. He thought it was going to be a traditional sandwich. However, my chicken kebab meal was flavorful and delicious. I didn't like the salad dressing that came on the salad, but that's just my particular preference. Everything was very fresh and was enough for two meals. I particularly enjoyed the outdoor seating on this nice Fall afternoon. We had differences of opinion on the burger. I thought it had a great taste-seasoned well, and fresh. My friend wasn't impressed and mentioned that it came out too fast to have been made fresh. I would love to go back and order one with all the trimmings to get a more accurate account as to how to rate it. I will definitely return to try more menu items.

While none of them have tasted quite as good since then (something about working up an appetite on the beach?), we still really enjoy a rare opportunity to eat at one. I knew we would be ready for lunch after a morning at a local museum, so I had researched possible venues earlier that morning. I showed my wife a short list and she immediately gravitated to Roly Poly. That would have been my first choice too. This one (the last one remaining in Birmingham, apparently) is in the Homewood neighborhood / area. It is located on a busy street with shops and plazas lining both sides. These look like they were built no later than 1950 but have evolved and been renovated as new tenants cycled through. We did angled parking on the street out front, but there may be better / easier parking on surrounding side streets. The only issue we had was backing out into traffic when we left; it took a few minutes for a gap. You enter and order at the counter. They have menus available there for you to check out. They have a rack of chips available, plus maybe other sides? I didn't look beyond the chips. You then sit down and wait for your order. I guess they have call-ahead too. Seating is along the wall to the right as you enter. There is a long bench the length of the wall with separate 4-person tables spaced along it, with 2 additional chairs each. Our order seemed to take a while, but it may have just been what we ordered (hot sandwich) versus other simpler orders getting filled faster. I got the French Twist, which is my favorite. I only got a regular and not a large, but I think I could have finished a large. My wife got something else, chicken-based I think. We both enjoyed this a lot. If I lived in the area, I'd probably stop in here semi-regularly.
