I had the opportunity to patronize Slide Cafe this past weekend. It was Valentine's Day weekend, so I expected a longer wait time. I decided to order on-line to help minimize the wait. My order was placed 10:26 and would be ready by 10:41 a.m. The email stated to come to the pickup counter once my order was ready. I arrived at 10:40 and looked for a pick-up station but I didn't see that area to directly go to. I found an "order here" area with individual kiosks that allowed for ordering prior to sitting. I walked near the bar and was greeted, asked did I have a to-go order and my food was bagged and ready as promised. Service and speed were on point. The previous location was smaller, so I was excited to see the newer location. The popular of the business has grown in the Birmingham community so it's grand to see the business elevate upward as well! The decor was amazingly designed, with black and white colors with an accent of yellow. This instantly created a warming spirit from within. There was ample seating, some located near the window which I loved. The remaining seating areas were spaced out great and even had a seating in a separate section that could host a wedding party, baby shower or birthday celebration. The restaurant offers a different ordering vibe, as mentioned earlier with the kiosks. There was a host present to assist with menu explanations, suggestions and order processes. I think this is smart, to prevent people from order errors and skipped bills, allowing the customer to be directly in charge of what the kitchen sees. There are plenty of options like, sauce on the side, omit and add items during ordering. There are some menu items that are specifically crafted by the chef so no modifications can be made to these items. However, so many items are available that something that may be wanted may be purchase a la carte. The kitchen receives the order electronically and the guest is given a number to place on their table. There are servers to bring the food to the table as well. The owners are the final point of expediting, which is brilliantly done. They provide the final quality control before the meal reaches the guest. This remains me of Gordon Ramsey service because it doesn't meet Chef Racquel's standards, it's not going out! With a name like Slide Cafe, the menu does include different brunch or lunch slider options, like steak and eggs (steak=brisket), chicken & waffle slider and break-fast slide with bacon and Conecuh sausage! How about a burger, grilled chicken or crab cake slider if breakfast is not on your mind. Omelets, breakfast platters (small or large), seafood options like shrimp or salmon and grits, pork chop & gravy, signature hash skillets topped with various house-made sauces and vegan options as well! Bottled soda, tea and lemonade were available as well as a full bar for mimosas and mixed drinks. They even have a soul food menu on the weekend with whole fried okra, lamb chops, jerk oxtails and more. I think that is perfect to take home if you come to dine in for brunch! Now, let's take about the food. I ordered the Catfish and grits, Chicken and Gravy slider w/ a fried egg and cheese and a House Lemonade. My total was less than $30, which I feel is ok with the amount of food provide. The slider was packaged in a Styrofoam container. The Catfish & Grits were accented nicely with garnish is a plastic meal-prep container, perfect to reuse for something else. The slider, yes, amazing any day. They are called sliders, but they really are sandwiches! The chicken breast was seasoned in and out, fried beautifully, crispy and juicy. The biscuit was definitely homemade and moist, fluffy, yet firm to hold everything together. I ordered the gravy on the side, which came in a 4-6-ounce bowl and used a dunking action to indulge. The gravy is homemade, rich and peppery. 10/10! The lemonade was not just powered Country Time lemonade. There was a real tangy and not overly sweetness to it. I drink some of it down and added water and it still had a nice flavor! Now, let's talk about the main course, the Catfish and Grits. This was definitely the start of the show for me. The fish is REAL USA farm-raised catfish, not that swai fish people sale as catfish. The fish was fried to perfection, crispy, flaky, seasoned and just right. I was nervous that the Cajun roux would make the fish soggy, but it was like the fish batter was perfect to still remain its texture. The Cajun roux was fire, with the perfect balance of peppers and onions. THOSE GRITS: Smooth, silky, cheesy, perfectly salted. I did NOT have to add any salt or pepper to anything. I've waited a few weeks to give this review for several reasons. I wanted to make sure I was no longer upset once I shared my experience. My girlfriends and I came to Bham for the weekend to enjoy a concert. We were all traveling. I was born and raised in Bham, lived there for 35 yrs until I married so I was looking forward to seeing what new places my hometown has now. I never visit unless it's a family situation & never get to enjoy a sit down restaurant while in town. One of my girlfriends picked this place in advance before we made it to Bham and we saw the location while grabbing dinner Friday night once we all arrived. She was very excited to try Slide Cafe. She also lived in Bham for years while attending school so it was nice for us to see new places to try. Once we arrived the hostess (JB) explained the process to us and we were seated. I ordered a Coke Zero. The hostess brought everyone drinks to the table and I noticed I didn't have a Coke Zero but a Diet Coke and every drink except the coffee was bottled. Coke Zero and Diet Coke are not the same but no problem. Just inform the buyer what they're paying for in case they rather choose something different. While the hostess is delivering our drinks + (1) coffee...he's holding the tray incorrectly, he leans with the coffee still on the tray, and the coffee falls, the lid comes off, and coffee is spilling continuously. It's now burning the hostess leg running into his socks and shoes but it's also spilling into my friend's purse that was positioned in the chair the hostess was standing over. Hot Coffee has filled her purse, ruined everything inside including her Air Pods, her wallet, and everything else inside. Here's where I become appalled....No one came to discuss this matter until 30 minutes after the incident. It was an awful feeling. We waited and waited and it only made the (4) of us more and more upset. We had not gotten our food yet because this happened as soon as we sat down, only our drinks were served. By the time the Co-Owner decided to come over, it was pointless. She showed little to no concern about how she would correct the incident nor did she show compassion to a woman just like herself. They decided to pay for her food. We wouldn't be there if we couldn't afford our food! She offered to clean her purse but did not think her air pods were damaged or her purse should be replaced. The coffee had so many grinds at the bottom of the cup as if it was the last of the coffee poured and it was also all over her things inside the purse. This experience was awful for all of us. The way we were treated is what made the incident 10 times worse. Had someone walked over to us immediately to help us understand the incident was NOT her fault and apologize on behalf of what happened and showed sensitivity to a woman who just had her things ruined, I would have shared a great experience in spite of what happened but that is not the outcome. I lived in Bham for 35 yrs and I watched places open and close often. If this management doesn't understand that this is not how you treat customers then this too will be another place that opened and closed. If I ever visit Bham again, I will never visit Slide Cafe! BTW, my Salmon was very dry. Salad was nice but after such as awful experience, none of us could enjoy our food even if it was good or bad. read more

First time here and was greeted by the host. She was very kind and directed us to the kiosk to order. The food and drinks came very quick. I was a bit disappointed. I ordered lamp chops, rice & gravy, and macaroni & cheese with a mimosa. The chops didn't come with any type of sauce and were very charcoaled surprisingly despite the outside one was very pink on the inside , chewy and in my opinion far from done. The sides of my entree are probably what saved the meal and they were still not overly great. The drink was ok as well. The total was about $46. Despite food coming out quick it would've been nice for someone to come around to see if anything was needed. Not sure if I will try this for brunch again. SLIDE is a cute cafe on Birmingham's South side. It appears to be very popular so it does get crowded during their business hours. Even though it was crowded, seating took place rather quickly. Once seated, you then walk up to the kiosk to browse the menu and place your order. You enter your table number and pay while at the kiosk. My food and drinks arrived shortly. The food was good and I'm looking forward to exploring other items on the menu. It was a cool vibe. read more

I have eaten from Chef Raquel's food truck and other restaurants before, so I know her food is top notch. However, this was my first time eating at this current location. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted and asked if we were first timers. We were then escorted to the kiosk where our orders would be taken, given a number and showed where our table was located. The host explained some menu changes and proceeded to allow us to finish our order. I opted for the Salmon Hash...my guy ordered the Big Breakfast. Both of us opted for bottled drinks. I'm not sure if I remember an option for either orange juice or Coke in any other form. I'll return to that later. The decor is beautiful. Whoever designed this layout is a star in my book. Pictures just don't do it justice. Very classy without seeming pretentious. A lot of time, money and effort has been sowed in this restaurant and it shows. There is ample seating throughout, window seating, bar seating, and a separate section that would be ideal for an intimate group outing or someone celebrating a special occasion. Soft R&B music made for the perfect ambiance. The food is cooked to order so there will be a short wait. The restaurant informs you of this online and there are signs posted that tell you this again. That's never a big deal to me because I appreciate freshness. The Big Breakfast was brought out first. And it certainly was big! It's enough to feed two or 3 people! Well worth the money charged for it if you're sharing or like leftovers. The biscuit was a little hard, but the replacement that was brought out after we mentioned it to a server more than made up for it. My salmon hash arrived shortly afterwards. I'm a picky salmon eater but taking one look at my dish, I knew it was prepared just as I wanted it to be. The salmon was well done without being dried out and full of flavor. The eggs and potatoes were perfection and the sauce on top was just the perfect touch that pulled everything together. Chef's kiss! I enjoyed every bite I could eat! It was a lot of food and I ended up having some to take home for later. I would definitely order this dish again when I want to splurge on a delicious breakfast entree. Which brings me to the cost. While I think the prices were fair for the dishes considering the amount of food we received, this is not a breakfast we could afford weekly. This would definitely be an order that I reserved for special occasions. However, I'm sure there are more affordable, everyday options to pick from. I will revisit soon to check out those options. Now this is brunch!! My girlfriends and I stopped by this location and we had zero regrets. The food came out hot and fresh, and the drinks were nice, flavorful, and super delightful! Ty greeted us at the door and checked in with us throughout our visit--she was so sweet and attentive. This new location is definitely bigger and brighter, which made the vibe even better. The only thing I didn't love was the kiosk setup. I felt a little rushed with a line behind me, so I couldn't really look over the menu. We are not local-we were in town for a wedding and wanted an easy place for brunch in a group before getting ready for a wedding. I don't think I would return based on our one experience. You order on a screen and are assigned a table number. I do not love this style of ordering as someone with food sensitivities who typically needs to alter my order and ask a few equations. It was also kind of a confusing set up for ordering with multiple screens to click through-easy to kiss something. Portions are comically massive. Like way too much food. Almost no one in our group finished their meal. My husband ordered a biscuit sandwich and there was 3 pieces of fried chicken stacked in a tiny biscuit. He had to deconstruct it to be able to eat it and then you just friend chicken with no sauce with what reminded. That is not appealing. He said it tasted fine but the rest of our table all said their food was over seasoned. I ordered French toast and it was fine but nothing special. The syrup had a flavor to it. I can't remember what it was but it wasn't for me. I'm sure it's something done specially or in house but it just was not for me. A note that everyone had was that the sausage in particular was way too over-seasoned. Like to a point that it was inedible. They also forgot our waters. Then they forgot straws. There was no salt or pepper et the table we had to ask for it and they brought out an literal oil of little salt & pepper packets (like what you get a gas station) Lastly there was a guy who I assume may have been the manager who was also functioning as the greeter who was quite loud. We were seated very close to the door and stand so there was no getting away from him yelling at everyone he spoke to. Not angrily just he had a very loud and high pitched voice. There is also almost no soft surface in the space so the overall space itself is quite loud so all of it was just a lot. He also came around and asked for good reviews which kind of turned all of us off. We actually had a conversation about it. All in all I'm this place was a little too much for me. SLIDE Cafe was amazing. Immediately upon going in, i was greeted and attended to promptly. They helped me understand everything on the menu and make sure I got the brunch I wanted. I am visually impaired and had a bit of a concern with some steps in the restaurant, but the staff helped me up and down the stairs without issue. The food itself? Some of the best brunch I've ever had. I like simple things made well, and the chicken, egg, and cheese sandwich is most definitely that. Savory and crispy chicken on a bed of jam, honey glazed over a buttery biscuit, and eggs and cheese all roughly held together--it'd be a challenge to eat it with your hands, no shame in using a fork and knife like I did. I also had a side of potatoes, which were perfectly crispy, well-seasoned, and delicious. All washed down with the southern classic that is sweet tea. When Slide Cafe first opened, it quickly became one of my favorite brunch spots in Birmingham. The food was always great, the service was amazing, and the owners were incredibly friendly and welcoming. I became a regular because the overall experience felt personal and consistent. Since moving to the larger space across from the original, it feels like something has changed. The atmosphere doesn't feel as warm, the staff hasn't been as friendly, and the food portions seem noticeably smaller while prices have gone up by about $1-3 per item. I've ordered lunch twice recently, and both experiences were disappointing. The fries were extremely overcooked -- so hard they were almost inedible. It's frustrating because I know how good this place used to be, and I genuinely want to see them succeed. I'm hopeful they can regroup, improve consistency, and get back to what made so many people love them in the first place. read more

I visited Slide Cafe for the first time and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. I ordered the ribeye steak and eggs and specifically asked for the steak to be cooked medium. When my plate arrived, the steak was clearly well-done. I voiced my concerns to the server, who took the plate to the owner/chef. The server returned and told me the chef said it was cooked medium and would not be replaced. The steak was undeniably overcooked. Another server stopped by my table and I asked her opinion--she agreed the steak looked well-done. She told me she would speak with the owner but never returned. I waited 15-20 minutes for the owner to come to my table and address the issue, but that never happened. I was told by the a server if I wanted to voice my concern, I needed to go up to the counter to talk with the chef. I'm the customer, I'm not coming to you ma'am! What frustrated me most was not only receiving a steak that was not cooked to order, but also the complete lack of accountability and customer care. As a first-time visitor, I expected at least some effort to correct the mistake or acknowledge my concern, but instead I left unsatisfied and disappointed. Sadly this is why some black businesses get a bad reputation because of businesses like this one. I'm very disappointed because I had been looking forward to patronizing this establishment and for this to be my experience. Came in for brunch on a Sunday and the place was busy! You're greeted at the entrance and order through the kiosk which makes ordering easy (plus see pictures of items you're ordering). We ordered 3 sliders which was enough for 2 people. The brunch sliders are piled high! You could tell a lot of thought went into curating this menu. The sausage was perfectly cooked and the sauces on the sliders made them even better. The favorite was the Sunrise biscuit slider. We also appreciate the complimentary mimosa with our meal. The food was phenomenal. The peach cobbler waffles was amazing. The flavor packed with the right acidity and sweet toppings. The waffles was fluffy and airy. The steak was a nice quality and the flavor will have you holding your fork for more. I had the scrambled eggs with the potatoes. The eggs was cooked fluffy and the taste was a down home southern grandmas kitchen. The skillet potatoes had that oven baked crunch. The ambiance was well lite. The service was top tier. My peach cobbler waffle was good but the potatoes were cold and hard, the eggs were dry, my friends steak was grossly overcooked and they refused to replace it or offer a substitute. We probably won't be coming back. Waitress was nice but chef seemed to have a little attitude when questioned about the steak. We went on a Sunday for brunch and it was super crowded. Had to it at bar. Wanted to order a coffee and orange juice once we were seared and was told we would have to wait in long line at the kiosk. After a long day of two friends grocery shopping and realizing neither one of us had eaten any breakfast or lunch we decided to eat a late lunch which ended up being my breakfast, lunch, and dinner lol. So yeah we were hungry and since this was on my list of new places to try and was in route of us heading home we stopped by SLIDE Cafe. Side story here this was on a Saturday and when we Googled to get the address and it said they were closed. I called the restaurant and they said they were open. I let them know of the issue and they fixed it and also confirmed to us that they are open till midnight. SLIDE Cafe is black owned by a LGBTQ couple with head chef Raquel Ervin who appeared on Food Network show Chopped. Got to meet her and her wife once we got there and both were very nice and we shared a good laugh about Google saying they were closed. The inside and out side of this place was beautiful and they definitely make sure you don't miss them. The menu is huge but not overwhelming with everything cooked to order. First up was the Smokehouse: burger slider with white American cheese, smoked bacon, lettuce, and white bbq sauce. This was so good and had so much flavor had this had some grilled onions it would have blown me to the moon. But still a great burger! 8.5/10 Next up the Chicken Pesto: this is what Caitlyn Sebastian ordered and I had the chance to try a bit of it and when I say that bite was all I needed to know that I wanted to order this again from now on! It had seasoned juicy grilled chicken, white American cheese, smoked bacon, house made pesto aioli, and lettuce and tomato. My only gripe with this sandwich was it had a but too much aioli on it for me but I can always go back and say light sauce. 9.5/10 And finally the Buffalo chicken sandwich: simple really hand breaded seasoned chicken breast deep fried with their house made sweet Buffalo sauce, pickles, blue cheese, and house mad Sriracha aioli. It was pretty good you'd think with all those sauces it would be to much but actually balanced well but the blue cheese does get lost a little. 8/10 The fries were really freaking good with the perfect crisp and fluffy inside and was seasoned perfectly as well. I was legit addicted to them! 10/10 All in all this was a great experience and I can't wait to go back. Everything all together gets a perfect score from me and I suggest you guys get to this place asap! 10/10 I completely forgot about the Lemonade they make in house as well. SLIDE Cafe 2012 Magnolia Ave S r3, Birmingham, AL 35205 Alright y'all it has been a while but I had lunch with my bestfriend the other day at SLIDE cafe and it was a nice experience. For those who don't know where it is, it's the restaurant located right above HUSH Lounge. When you walk in, there are two kiosk stations that you can order from. Now for a second we thought they were closed, so don't make the same mistake we did... just go ahead and walk in. The kiosk has several sliders that you can choose from along with sides and beverage options. The combos come with one slider and you can add additional sliders if you'd like. Now come prepared to spend a coin if you want to try multiple sliders because it can get pricey I ordered the classic, 12 hour smoked brisket, and the chicken bacon ranch. The classic was just a regular cheeseburger slider and it was delicious. The 12 hour smoked brisket was very good and comes with a brown sugar glaze on it that sets it off the chicken bacon ranch was good as well but if I get it again I'll probably take the ranch off and add ketchup. That's just my preference. I also tried the "Not just chips and dip" for an appetizer and it was good as well. The chips are topped with six cheese spinach dip, grilled chicken, diced tomatoes, and onions. I would definitely order those again! The lemonade was very good! Whenever I see lemonade in one of those little bottles I just know it's gonna buss down! Oh wait, the fries.... SLAPPED I love a good potato and they did not disappoint. I came here for the first time yesterday and was absolutely taken back! After living in the south for so many years and looking for a proper Southern breakfast w no success, I can finally stop looking! This joint had the heartiest food, and every detail, down to the perfect mix of saltiness and spiciness on the chicken, to the crumbly buttery biscuits stacked with three different types of meat and sweet jelly, and the maple syrup that had cinnamon undertones to it, I was blown away. I had driven past this place a few weeks ago, and it immediately caught my eye. It really stands out. Then about a week later my friend Christian and I came to get lunch here. The inside is impeccably clean. The workers are all so nice too. You order on the giant ipads when you walk in. I ordered the Retro Slider and substituted the slider bun with lettuce. I love breakfast food and the Retro slider being topped with an egg and hashbrown is what won me over. I tried some of Christian's 12 hour brisket slider too. They were all delicious! I had this place bookmarked for a while to try & a friend of mine highly recommended it so that confirmed my visit I brought my husband here for his birthday for lunch & we both got the classic slider with fries & a lemonade (BOMB) first off the customer service was great very welcoming and accommodating the young lady that waited on us explained the menu & showed us how to order on the kiosk which was kinda a hassle if you're in your late 40s & can't see well lol nevertheless our food came out pretty quick and seasoned to perfection my only complaint would be the price they are a little pricey considering you're only getting one slider but I totally understand (inflation) we should've ordered a extra one with our combo I hate I didn't get to try their spinach dip but I'll be back to handle that read more

the experience was not what I expected. The food was overly sweet and the drinks were very strong and bitter. When asked for an exchange, I was met with rudeness. I was told that she couldn't do an exchange because of "personal preference." I just feel like as a customer, my needs are supposed to be accommodated and I didn't receive that. This was my first time dining and it was a great experience! I was a little shocked that instead of being seated and ordering, we were to order at a kiosk and then wait for the food to be brought out. The complimentary mimosa was also a nice plus. The restaurant was very busy and crowded as it was a Saturday during brunch time and we ended up sitting at the bar due to a lack of seats. The food was absolutely delicious though!! read more

very unorganized I must say. Food was good, but you have to order your food on a kiosk and you can't modify anything. They give you a number for your table but have to walk around to look for numbers. Some drinks were never received and they do NOT do refunds, so you either have to accept your drink 30 mins later (after waiting 45 mins) or you are out of luck. They need a better system as far as service because it is very overstimulating. No one knows what's going on. read more

Inspired by chef's upcoming Food Network appearance and wanting to support a black owned business in honor of MLK day decided to try something new and picked up lunch for the family. I chose the XL and Smokehouse, wife got the PB&J with a side of French fries and son got the 2AM & 6AM. I liked both of mine equally, the XL was a bit messier due to the extra toppings but I would still get it again. Wife really liked the blackberry jalapeño jelly on hers (we all did) and would have liked to have a bit more. Son is a big fan of breakfast type burgers and was pleased with both of his. You order by using some touchscreen menus allowing you to customize your burger. I inadvertently selected the no bun option on my wife's order. Fortunately I checked my receipt and noticed in time to let the staff know and they were able to correct before it was prepared. Had I not checked, it would not have been discovered until I got back home and she would have been very disappointed. I would recommend the staff confirm the to go orders when giving to the customer since the boxes are sealed to prevent similar issues because I have no idea how I selected no bun. While slightly more expensive, overall I thought it was reasonable. I don't expect quality ingredients and really good food for fast food prices. I plan to return at some point. read more

Visited Slide Cafe for Easter Brunch today and loved every part of my experience! The staff was super helpful and patient. They explained the ordering process and ensured we got our food just like we wanted it. Chef Raquel and her staff were super nice and genuine in their interactions with us. Chef Raquel even stepped out for a moment to get a quick picture with us. She was so down to earth! The food was absolutely amazing and super tasty! The house lemonade was PERFECT! I think the catering side of this business has been around for a while but just recently the owner had a Grand Opening for the food truck. I have been wanting a burger and just so happen I went on their Facebook page and saw they would be at Siluria Brewing Company in Alabaster (07/24/2020), perfect!!! I was able to check out the truck for the first time and enjoy two Classic Sliders (ground beef, cheddar cheese, lettuce, pickles, tomato, onion, and mayochup) with fries. Pretty good and satisfied my taste for a burger. There are several other slider options on the menu as well as chips and spinach dip as sides. I really enjoyed my food (the seasoned beef on a buttered bun, awesome) plus hot fries. I was glad to see them in the area. Next up is the Crab Cakes slider. I heard it's really good. read more

My experience at the Slide Cafe was not pleasant to say the least. You're asked to pay before you eat which was a red flag. However I chose to take a chance due to the versatility that we have adapted as a society and the way one can dine. You're prompted to order your food on a kiosk. I love steak omelette I make them myself and always order one from IHOP which absolutely delicious. However, I didn't have the same experience at this establishment. The omelette unexpectedly came with sweet heat sauce. When I asked to possibly get my dish modified not refunded but modified. I was told that there is no way my dish can be modified due to cash efficiency. Per, my past experiences with other establishments the customer is always right and should be accommodated if they are spending money within said establishment. I've never experienced this before. The drink was also not so great my drink was not mixed well whichever created a very bitter taste. When asked to modify this I was left with no accommodation. This was my first experience in Birmingham and Slide cafe. I can say my experience was not pleasant and I wish it was. I will not return to this establishment if I ever visit Birmingham again. read more
