tl;dr: sloppy balayage, but a skilled correction. Friendly staff and historically great reviews, so I'm hoping I had an outlier experience. However, I can't rationalize any extra stars, as these dye mistakes should have been caught (and never even happened in the first place)? I really wanted to like Crafted. It had a lot going for it: prime Hampden location, gender-neutral/length-dependent pricing, wind-powered energy, promising stylist portfolios, mere metres away from the Charmery... and yet my experience ended up being a bit of a headache. I have been getting balayge done on an annual basis and was very happy with Morgan's artistry (she's at Dryland in Canton - I followed her over from Scene 217). I don't know why I decided to mix things up when I had something that worked, but my friends had great things to say about Crafted and I decided to ~go rogue~ and take a gander. My first appointment was with Nicole Leadbetter, who had a fabulous-looking Instagram and promising client reviews. I briefed her on what I wanted (wanted to go blonder, but retain natural roots) and showed her two photos - one of the balayage pattern I wanted (gradual colour melt, with lots of fine sections) and one of the tones I was looking for (a warm "bronde" balayage Nicole posted on her IG). My previous balayage was about 50% grown out at the time, so there was a good 5" of virgin hair. For reference, my hair is naturally a light brown (prob level 5-6?) and is somewhere between a type 1/2a. Nicole quickly sent to work. She was affable and friendly, but in retrospect the service I got was largely inattentive - she was chatting with other staff and simultaneously doing another client's roots. Also, since I was scheduled immediately after another client, my appointment started about 15 min late and went up until closing (5 pm). As they were closing and did not have enough time for a trim**, I just checked the front of my hair (which looked as I described) and headed out. While she asked to take a "before," Nicole never asked to take an after photo... which may have been a warning sign. When I got home and inspected my hair more closely, I was aghast. There was a very noticeable horizontal cutoff wrapping around the back of my head. Underlying layers had abrupt stepoffs in the balayage line. Some of the balayaged pieces at my temples had dye splotches. Sections were toned unevenly - my upper pieces were a buttery, warm blonde but the underlying hair toned to a stark grey. This occurred on virgin sections, so it cannot be blamed on previous dye jobs. I don't understand how I could have been sent out without this noticed... Crafted does have dim lighting and it was dark when I was blow-dried, so I'm assuming the lighting masked it? However, when you have poor lighting in a salon, maybe you should find some way to ensure clients' dye mistakes are recognized? Fortunately, their staff were able to get me back 2 days later. Tiffany Rojas and Josh assessed my hair; due to the weird Line of Shame in the back, the balayage either had to be drawn over it or my roots would have to be painted down. Props to Tiffany for her colour correction job; she was very thorough and attentive. They couldn't get the grey colour out of the bottom streaks, so she painted more root colour on them and tempered my hair to a more netural "bronde" with blended sections of golden and ash tones. The final product is very well blended and multi-dimensional, so I would wholeheartedly recommend Tiffany. Just upset that getting to this point took an additional day of my time and the unnecessary double-processing of my hair. :/ **I attempted to book online, but it blocked only an hour for a balayage. When I called the next day, their receptionist recommended that long dye jobs be scheduled over the phone so they can block an appropriate time slot. I let them know I'd be wanting a balayage and a trim. However, when I showed up, I was scheduled only for a balayage. I'm assuming this was just some miscommunication. read more

I wish this salon was more upfront about pricing. I called to ask for a price range for balayage on shoulder length hair, but was told I had to schedule a consultation first. In person I was eventually quoted $290 for balayage, $250 for a partial balayage. This is without a cut. Tiffany was respectful and kind, but didn't seem very confident or knowledgeable, which made me nervous. She also said after the first treatment it may look brassy orange until I came in a second time (for another $290). read more

I thought the service, my stylist, and my haircut were all great, however, I thought the price of my haircut was not communicated well and was a bit steep for what I got. I went in and got my hair cut, shampooed, and blowdried, and I got charged 85$. I didn't find a price on their website or in any of the emails they sent. I wanted to tip my stylist, but that would be putting the final price at around 100$. The price makes me hesitant to book another appointment, which sucks cause I really like the place and would go again if the price wasn't so steep. read more

I knew I was in the right place when I walked in to hear a David Bowie song playing. Sam made me feel very comfortable and heard me out for what kind of cut I was looking for. She gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had! I really enjoyed watching her work and artistically cut my hair in a way that gave it soo much personality, movement, and texture! If these pictures aren't enough to make you think twice about visiting this salon, then maybe the following points will: 1. I spent $100 for a Great Clips quality hair cut. 2. Angelica never once shared the products she used in my hair . . . And when I asked for the product names, she didn't care to show me the bottle or offer them for me to purchase. 3. I entered the salon with very long hair -- Length at my waist -- and I asked for the length to be no shorter than 3 inches past my collarbone... as you can see, my hair is completely off my shoulders. Awful. 4. I am a brand new client and have never been to this salon...Angelica never once asked me for my name/called me by my name and she was completely silent for the majority of the service, until I started making conversation myself. It's normal to make new clients feel safe and comfortable with getting to know them or at least polite conversation. Disclosure: I am a licensed cosmetologist, and I didn't feel the need to tell her this, as I went to the salon as a hopeful new customer. After witnessing her techniques in cutting what is supposed to be a Long Bob, I was horrified. The graduation "wedge" should never extend past the nape/occipital area of the head. The communication was terrible and the consultation was very short. She clearly did not understand what I wanted and didn't care. I looked forward to this appointment for weeks. I've never had short hair before...always very long...and I thought Angelica would be an expert on curls, given her Instagram pictures, but I was deeply disappointed and I cried when I got in the car. I felt rushed to leave. I would never let a client leave my chair like this. UPDATE: I spoke with the manager, Shelly, over the phone. All I can say is this whole experience is unbelievable. As customer, I'm so insulted for being blamed by the salon owner for the stylists mistake, but as a hairstylist myself I am disgusted by the lack of empathy and respect. Although, I was given a refund, Shelly was very defensive and unsympathetic. I had to explain to her why it's important for a stylist to show the products used during the service to their clients, because she didn't agree that it was necessary. She brought up how this bad experience may have happened due to bad communication...so I then asked her if she thought it was my fault, and she responded with it COULD be my fault. I am dumbfounded that she would attempt to blame me or even make me feel responsible in any way for receiving a bad hair cut. So unprofessional and I'm really hurt and disappointed. Nice atmosphere and friendly stylists but not the place to go if you have curly hair. After reading rave reviews on Yelp, I decided to try this place out. I didn't have an appointment, but I walked in and was greeted by a stylist and told to wait for a few moments for another stylist to finish up. I told the stylist that I was looking for a curly hair cut, something along the lines of a "Ouidad" cut and she went to work. While she was cutting my hair, I noticed she was lobbing off particular sections and cutting chunky layers - not always the best technique for curly hair. After she finished, I was satisfied enough with the haircut and the service, but it wasn't exactly what I had in mind and I couldn't quite articulate how she should change it, so I simply said I was ready to pay. So happy to have found this salon! I recently relocated to the area and was sad to leave behind my reliable salon in California. I found this salon through Instagram and admired what I saw. Oddly enough, when I noticed that Crafted and my old salon both followed each other, I decided to reach out for an appointment. The scheduler was quick to respond to my email inquiry with upcoming availability and I completed my booking process over the phone with ease. The salon itself had a very chill, modern, and comfortable vibe. I was warmly welcomed by the receptionist who also noted that it was my first time and thanked me for visiting. Tiffany took me back to her chair and made me feel right at home. I have very long hair that has taken a long time to grow out, so it can be nerve wracking to ask a new stylist for "just a trim" and hope that they don't take too much off. She understood exactly what I was wanting, proceeded to take off enough to leave my hair looking thicker and healthier while also maintaining my length. I just moved and needed a new Hairstylist. I LOVE Alex. I have long hair with an uneven texture and she knows exactly what to to to make it more manageable from adding texture to fixing the layers. I have been to this place twice now and each time I have been very pleased with the service. I am pretty simple and just ask for the cut/dry service. Which they include a wash and dry service and always leaves my hair silky soft! They do a blowout as well and it's always flawless. As for my trims I ask for a certain length and of course they execute it to perfection. I never have trouble finding an open spot or parking when I go (although I only go on weekdays so that could be a contributing factor). Dawn is the best! I'm very particular over my curls and have only been going to Deva certified salons and stylists over the past few years. However, I needed to find something within my budget and I was so happy to find Dawn, who is just as good and for half the price. Dawn knew what I wanted with my hair better than I did. I wanted to maintain length but still cut off a good chunk of dead ends and have a bit of a change, and she did just that. I also wasn't sure if I wanted bangs, so she cut a little but told me to come back within a week if I wanted more and she'd do so for free. I did just that, and she cut exactly the bangs I wanted. Over all, Dawn is extremely confident and skilled in cutting curly hair. She was very respectful of what I wanted but also was helpful in advising what would look best for me. The front desk woman was very rude. I was 10 minutes earlier than my appointment to make sure I arrive there on time. However, she made me wait for almost 20+ minutes after my appointment. So in total, I spent 40 minutes to just to get into the salon. During this waiting time, she let me wait outside in a very hot weather the whole time. I knocked on the door to ask if I can wait inside. The next thing she did was UNBELIEVABLE! She saw and heard I was knocking on the door but wouldn't open it!!! Eventually, I called her but she still wouldn't open the door, keep ignoring me! Can you believe anyone would be this rude to anyone?!! Eventually she let me in because "the hair cutter is now ready for me" after almost half an hour! I argued with her for another 5 minutes but no apology for the entire time. What can I say? You can't teach someone to be polite if they are not. So the haircut itself was pretty good. The workers inside are nice and friendly though. Somebody should fire this front desk woman. read more

From the moment I walked in everyone was welcoming, helpful, accommodating, and friendly. All the other customers are walking out looking amazing and smiling. And they helped figure out a place my mom and baby could wait for me that isn't in the salon (it would have been super crowded). The haircut itself was excellent, and Dawn gave me tips along the way explaining better treatment for my hair (thin, curly, and receding in post partum way), suggested a different cut than the one i came in intending to get (which worked out well since i was trying to cover up the receding post partum hair situation), and while offering products for sale the salon carries, also let me know what products she uses and where to get them. Disclaimer: I've known the owner as a fellow rider and a Facebook friend. But I was not interested in trying out the studio until I really needed to as I was happy with my previous salon until recently. My experience here has been amazing. I went on a hair cut date with my girl friend who curled her hair couple of months ago and it was a big mess. With a heavy heart she decided to chop it all off and asked Angelica to do the necessary. Angelica worked with another girl there for an hour to save my gfs hair instead of taking the way route and chopping it off. She managed to do the impossible and keep almost 3/4 the length. You should have seen my gfs face. She's very very happy. My hair cut: I was in two minds about this place as I am very particular with my hair. I don't have a lot of it so I have to be careful with what I do have you know. I recently lost a lot of hair due to a medical condition. I always kept long hair but decided to cut it real short and needed ideas about a line in there. Khadijah was realively new there so I was skeptical about her. But she spent about 45 minutes carefully cutting my hair and discussing a lot of current affairs. She's very personable and really cared for the work she did. I ended up getting a beard trim and a line in the shortest hair cut I've ever pulled off. Me and my gf both left that place with a very big smile and a great look. We even tried the donut place next door and bought a donut as a gift to Angelica for all her hard-work. I highly recommend this place. Well I don't know if she was having an off day or what, but she did a horrible job on my hair. I had showed her a picture of the type of haircut I wanted and she advised me not to get that specific haircut. I trusted her judgment and I decided to let her cut my hair how she suggested. She is a true artist and great at pushing you out of your comfort zone (in a good way) when needed. It's really best to just give her complete artist freedom - you will not be disappointed! Even my wife, who tends to be more low maintenance when it comes to hairstyles, is now sporting an edgy modern Nicole short cut and she LOVES it :) The entire staff is GREAT as well - very welcoming. My regular salon jacked up their haircut prices by 15 bucks so I decided to try here instead because their prices were reasonable...especially with a beginning stylist. I scheduled online but had an emergency and had to reschedule and they were super nice and very accomodating over the phone. I finally went to my appointment today and was a bit leery about trying some place new. I don't need a lot done to my long hair...just a trim and I don't take care of my hair that much so I get a lot of tangles in the winter. I have gone to salons and have gotten judged or whatever for this. I had gone to another salon in hampden and was overcharged for my haircut because he had to comb out my hair. For a hipster place, this salon really is very friendly and not pretentious. I had gone to a hipster place in catonsville and while I got a good haircut and color, those ppl were too cool for school. I found everyone at crafted to be extremely welcoming from the receptionist to the stylist to the shampoo girl. I like that they specialize in edgy styles; My stylist Dawn was very easy to talk to and genuinely nice and outgoing. She gave me practical tips on my hair and suggestions for future services for my hair that were realistic and affordable and also gave me good tips about the local music scene because she is a musician. I really wanted to like this place and have been contemplating whether to write this review or not. But since I'm sitting in a hair salon next door trying to fix my hair that I really didn't like I guess I can say that I really hated that I paid so much money for a hair that I hate. So I have a a beautiful balayage hair. All I wanted was to extend the balayage up and add more lighter strands. Well I ended up with a dark coconut shaped top and the rest of my hair ended up in the weird reddish blonde color. No stylish painting of the blonde. It's all just solid blonde. It's awful. The color is too warm and brassy. They tried to tone it down already which improved it but it still sucks. I'm getting it fixed right now. Here are the actual photos. I had a consultation with Randi at Crafted when I wanted to talk about doing a body wave perm on my hair. She was warm and professional at the consultation and put me at ease. Appointment day came and she put in work! The Assistant, Theresa was incredibly helpful and efficient as well. They undertook a big project with me and I am so grateful. Randi is an amazing stylist; honest, hard working, sweet, and super talented. A major plus to me is that Randi has her own room in the salon. I can relax and feel at ease getting my hair done. Even after I washed my hair and did my usual routine (no product and air drying) the cut looks fabulous. His price point is on point for the skill he brings to the chair. I've got long hair and it hasn't been cut since August 2017 because I trust 2 people in this world to cut my hair and they both live on the other side of the country... now I trust 3 people.
