We went into Cranberry Sweets by accident. Boy that was a very naughty but incredible mistake that we made. We had just talked about dieting and cutting sugar out as we turned into the parking lot. I was told it was a gift store and we wanted to buy some gifts & souvenirs for family and friends back home. They had so many food samples, candy samples, popcorn samples. We ate like it was a meal. It was way better than Costco. The service was incredible. We bought so many things we did not need, but we got home and couldn't believe everything was fresh and delicious! The ambience when you walk in is like no other. The smell is incredible for coming from all angles. You can smell vanilla. You can smell cinnamon. You can smell even birthday cake! We got fudge, tea cakes, fruit jelly candy, cranberry tea cakes, scones, jellybeans, peanut butter fudge, and that's just a few of the things that we purchased after eating a sample. I've never seen so many samples are such an incredible selection of naughty delights. Do yourself a favor and skip lunch, and then go there. You will be full when you leave believe me. If you love sweets, you should DEFINITELY come by Cranberry Sweets! We were passing through Coos Bay on our way up the coast and a friend of ours (Hi Crystal) recommended we stop. I'm glad she did. We went to the factory store which was fun. I was surprised at the variety of candy they made. Not just stuff with cranberry (although plenty of that there) but things like flavored popcorn, peanut brittle, mint meltaways (with mint grown locally), their own version of butterfingers, fudge, fruit slices, and more. SELECTION: If you couldn't already tell, their selection is huge. Mostly when a candy store has a selection this fast, quality suffers. But so far I have not found that to be the case. Just tried a chocolate covered Oreo and thought it was delicious! I also love that they have a variety of packaging options. So many places have only one size but it's like Goldilocks and the Three Bears here. Small sample sizes, medium one or two person sizes, and family sizes! SERVICE: Not only do they have variety but their service is exceptional. Everyone was so nice and the woman helping us also offered to wrap it up for us. Just great experience overall. We were driving and randomly saw this place in Coos Bay OR. From the outside you would have no idea what's in store! Hundreds of candies all made inside. The best is you can taste test them. If you ever find yourself in southern Oregon on the coast near Coos Bay, do yourself a favor drive over and drop in this place. This independent candy maker has it going on. Cranberry Sweets started out as a fruit pate maker years ago. From that small venture it has bloomed a full blown candy shop with some great and tasty treats - killer truffles, awesome melt-a-ways, wonderful toffees, delicious pates - i sure I'm forgetting some others because everywhere you turn in the store there is some other kind of sweet treat, 150 different types if I remember the tour correctly. They have sample bowls everywhere of pretty much all of their offerings and if they do not have something out that you wish to try - just ask they will be glad to cut you a taste. There is about a 3-5 minute little "tour" if you like within the store; the history, what is what and where, etc - to get your bearings - and then the rest is up to you. You can mix and match, build custom boxes of sweets, buy single pieces, pretty much any way you want your candy they will make a bag, a box or more for you while you're there. We did the little tour and then walked and sampled a few different sweets and built a few different boxes to take with us on our trip. We sampled all of the ones mentioned earlier and some of our favorites were boxed. As well, they often use local purveyors for collaborations like pates made with local craft beers - one was 7 Devils porter. Stand outs: the Fruit Pates - very good true to flavor and very tasty, they are known for their Cranberry pate - but the Orange and Lemon were our favorites ~ the Toffees - two words... Smoked Bacon. ~ the Truffles - there were several very good ones, but the double Chocolate and Wild Turkey were my choices. The kid went for a Ghost pepper one - very hot! ~ the Melt-a-ways - all of them. The factory, processing area is in the back, behind a full glass wall so that you can watch them making, processing, etc. All of the ladies that were in front were fun, friendly and kind - they went the extra mile for us, and if you take your time like we did. Before you know it you will be walking out with 70$ bucks worth of treats too! Hey it was vacation... They can also be found online if you don't live local and they will be glad to ship you sweet treats - there was a big pile of boxes waiting to go out in the mail the day of our visit. Staff here are delightful. We were happily greeted upon entry, given a brief story about the company, and told we were welcome to request samples of anything we liked. Their popcorns are really great and full of flavor. We had both a savory and sweet and both were excellent. They are known for their cranberry pate (it's like a soft jelly candy), which didn't initially impress, but grew on me with all the free goodie bags they gave us with our purchase. No luck. The store is neat and clean. Kids shuffling around the store trying to stuff their mouths with as much candy as possible. Prices are ok, but still on the high end however. Chocolate is pretty good. Not exceptional, but good. Friendly staff. It's kinda fun to watch them make the chocolate right then and there. How fresh can it get? I am always amused by the thought of a cranberry bog. Although Oregon's crop is small, it is one of the special regional treats in Bandon and Coos County. This sweet shop was surprisingly large and I had no idea you could produce so many cranberry related products. But it felt rather generic, almost like walking into See's Candy and there was no production going on during our visit. Perhaps we caught them at a bad time or I should have visited the Bandon location rather than the factory store in Coos Bay, but it won't be a place where we will be rushing back. I purchased a couple chocolate items with raspberries and nuts. They also have a large Jelly Belly display so my boys got to mix and match and pay by the pound. Overall the prices seemed high and when we were there they didn't offer many samples, so it wasn't quite the experience I was hoping for in the area. But I'm happy to report that Cranberry Sweets went above and beyond for my order. About a week ago, I placed an order for my son and his family. I was working, distracted, and so when placing the order I selected that the candy items should be shipped to my billing address. MISTAKE! I called about an hour later and a very nice person made notes and made the change. However, the candy showed up at my house today. I called--again they answered! Very nice again. All I wanted was a shipping label to pay for shipping to my son's home in San Diego. Instead, they said to keep the candy, and they would replace the order (in tact) and send it to the address that they had in their notes. Driving down the road we saw the sign, "CANDY CANDY CANDY". Well, Fat Girl Wonder and her Diabetic Boy sidekick just couldn't say no to THAT siren song. We walked into an adorable little sweet shop. As it was the weekend, production wasn't underway which was a bummer because I love watching things like that, and their setup has large windows that look into their small confection kitchen. The shop has a selection of gifts and retain candies, but the gems are the confections they produce there on site. Many well crafted candies, ranging from unique white chocolate barks (orange, mint, hazelnut, crispy) to chocolate creams of many flavors to truffles. There are unique specialties including Pie Candies -- a dip that tastes like meringue in flavors of lemon, apple and pumpkin. But my favorite was the cranberry jellys -- sweet blocks of soft jelly dipped in silky milk chocolate. YUM. I believe they started in Bandon, and opened this second store in Coos Bay. Rachel Ray made a visit as part of her $40 A Day series. It's a real local treat, with recipes honed and nurtured by a now 2nd generation owner. The staff was friendly and helpful. My gf and I were able to taste all kinds of different chocolates and we ended up buying a lot more chocolate than we thought we would. I was especially thrilled to see a wide selection of specialty candies suitable for diabetics. I have a dear aunt who simply cannot have the sugars, but was able to gift her with a lovely array of delectables from Cranberry Sweets. On a business level, I've not gotten the "response" when trying to acquire cooperation on local projects, but I've tried not to have that impact my overall opinion of the stores and the value they add to Oregon's South Coast. Anyone traveling through, or certainly those of us who live around here should consider Cranberry Sweets first for the "better than expected" gift. Even though the prices aren't terribly high, if you spend too much time in here, you might end up spending a lot to get everything you want. If you get there right when they open, they have some coffee for you to drink while you look around at everything. You can taste all the fudge and some other sweets they make there. They make their own fudge, caramels, taffy and chocolates. And it smells wonderful when you walk in. A candy store can be a dangerous place for someone with a large sweet tooth. read more
