This is the only company in the Portland, Oregon tri-county area that really does custom orthotics. They never use a machine to make your shoes or inserts. They are, without a doubt, the BEST. Unfortunately, they are VERY picky about insurance. They don't take UHC, for example. To my knowledge they only take Providence or Regence. Therefore, after having them make my shoe inserts for over a decade, I've had to drop them because Regence Medicare has gotten too expensive, and Providence doesn't have my doctors. They claim that UHC won't take them, but that is simply not true! In reality, Crary Shoes refuses to take any insurance other than the ones that pay them top dollar. I guess they don't need the business, but they shouldn't lie about the reason they won't take UHC or Humana. For that I've docked them 2 stars. Otherwise they deserve 5 stars. read more

I have had foot problems most of my life following serious injuries sustained in a fall 42 years ago. Over the years I had shoes made from several custom shoe shops. Unfortunately, it is a very tough business, and some shops had to close up. Luckily for me the last shop referred me to Crary shoe, all the way on the other coast from me. Not going to say they are cheap (they aren't!) and not going to say they are stylish (most are not) but they are kind, friendly and helpful-and they stand by their product. Good luck on getting in to a valid appointment. Their customer service is atrocious. Had an appointment for June 15th and the scheduling the appointment said since my insurance with Moda was going to end at the end of July and Medicare would be kicking in, I had to wait till Medicare kicked in. A couple weeks ago she called and said everything was OK and set me up with an appointment for what turns out to be tomorrow. Today she calls back and the insurance wouldn't work for them and I would need to be out of pocket to the tune of $500 plus and wanted to move my appointment up. Just called back to find out if I was going to make it. I told her to cancel it. I don't think this company needs my business. Go somewhere else. read more

I think it is fair to say that Crary Shoes and Meredith and her team changed my life and very much for the better!! I have a left foot that was badly injured in my 20's and which has plagued me and caused challenges for me ever since. Fortunately, my podiatrist recommended Meredith and Crary shoes and they have been a genuine godsend. Not only has she created an orthotic that supports and stabilizes my foot, but also shoes that enable that orthotic to function effectively. It has made all the difference in the world for me. I had all but given up the idea of hiking anymore because it was so painful and troublesome. Now, thanks to Meredith and her team, I am able to hike and in many cases I'm able to do so without pain. I have been to other specialty shoe stores and this stores sets itself above them in several different ways. First off, they have not one but 2 pedorthists on staff and both of them ( john and Meredith) are 2 of the most kind, helpful and knowledgeable people i have ever dealt with in the specialty shoe business or any other business. I am diabetic and have neuropathy and several other foot problems and recently purchased 3 pairs of shoe and inserts. A pair of sheep skin slippers for around the house, gym shoes, and a pair of walking boots. After wearing them for a few days i developed large blisters on both feet and they got me scheduled in right away to modify the inserts. I plan on having a long term relationship with this store and couldn't be happier with my shoe, inserts, and their awesome customer service. Please, Crary, stay in the diabetic shoe supply business as i don't want to go somewhere else where they have no knowledge of feet and shoes and only corporate training to push certain products. If you have foot problems i would highly recommend coming here although i think you have to have a doctors prescription. read more

Got a pair of shoes made by Crary Shoes wore one shoe my other foot is broke and the sole of the shoe started pealing off in 3 weeks, My insurance paid somewhere around $750.00 for this pare of shoes that come apart in 3 weeks. Called them the women on the phone asked me to bring them in and they would re glue it that did nt make me to happy and told her that and she said well we cant make you happy so what do you want to do i said make me a good pair of $750.00 shoes that hold together for more than 3 weeks I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER PAIR OF THESE SO CALLED SHOES OR WASTE MY INSURANCE $$$$ ON THESE SO SHOE'S will pay $20.00 for shoes that hold up better than CRARY SHOES.On top of that it took 4-6 weeks to make this shoe... read more

I am writing this directly to Bill and for all to review. I had Bill make a pair of short top with zipper on side cowboy boots. As a city guy, I wanted the cowboy high heal and lower shape of a cowboy boot but didn't want the bulky top. He didn't like the idea but for a $1,000.00 he would do what I wanted. Professionally, I had heard of Bill for sometime before I placed my order. He was highly recommended and I put my total trust in his reputation and years of experience. This encounter was approximately 10 years ago. Bill personally measured my feet and was cordial. Over the next few months, Bill called me to say he had completed my boots. I went in with great expectations because of the price I paid and his (I thought) great record of excellence. Remember, I paid a lot, and Bill was suppost to make the boots for me........He brought the boots out.....but....they were not short top cowboy boots but a pair of low heal Italian style boots. Bill was shocked that I was concerned that this was not what I had ordered. I was shocked that this appeared to be the first time that Bill had seen my boots. Remember, He was suppost to use his years of experience to build and supply me with a "Custom" order. At that time we reviewed the paper work for my order and it was very specific to be a modified cowboy boot not and Italian short boot. I ask Bill if he didn't build my order then who did. He took me to his back production room to have the details worked out with the young man who ..as Bill stated..was learning the craft. So, Bill had contracted out the building of my boots to a young man who didn't have the skill, years of experience that Bill did or that I had paid for... This young man didn't build the boots to order but to what he thought it to be. Are we starting to get the picture. To qualify the events: Bills business was starting to go very well and he couldn't do all the work himself. Bill told me he would build the boots but that was not the case in the end. The young man had a Russian or Eastern European accent and had difficulty communication in English ideas. They indicated that the boots would be redone to my specifications. I left it to them to make it right. A month went by and I was call in for a fit. Some shoe construction clarification: 1. Cowboy boots require a specific arch with a unique curve and dimension to create the bridge to the heal and flat part of the foot. 2. An Italian boot or any shoe (other than a cowboy boot) requires a completely different arch insert between the sole of the shoe and the inter sole. Here was the short cut to the their failed solution. They originally made the heal appro. 1" in error. Now they would add 2" to the heels """Without putting the proper cowboy arch in to support the curve of the foot...""" I challenged this error. Bill ask me to try it and see how it worked out. This I have come to believe was to just get me out of the store with the boots. And it did. The boots never were comfortable and I could only wear them for a short time without discomfort. I called Bill about this problem many times and he finally wouldn't return my call or see me when I went to his location. Shortly after that, I moved out of Portland and was unable to resolve the fit and 10 years latter ....Have a pair of custom made boots to fit that I still cant wear. Dear Bill, life is a journey of honesty, truth and excellence. You stated to me that you are a man of faith which bears many connotations. I am asking you to deliver the honesty, truth and excellence that you represented to me when you took my order and money for your product and supply to me what I paid you for.
