My first trip here was not a good experience. Mainly because the fresh crawfish must have been sitting in a pot all day. They were mushy and almost disgusting. I ate less than a lb. I wanted to give them a fair shake so I went back again. Unfortunately it was just as bad the second time. The seasoning is bland. The crawfish were again over cooked or sat around to long. I promise that I will never go back. The prices are not worth it. I would pay double at another place in town and drive an extra 20 miles for not only fresh crawfish but freshly boiled crawfish as well. read more

Best boiled crawfish in BHAM and the surrounding areas bar none! Excellent red beans and rice too with delicious sausage included. I like the food here but the service is below par and they are actually proud of it apparently because they admit it on their t-shirts. They may think that's cute but I don't. If the attitude towards their service was better, I'd be there once a week instead of just crawfish season. read more

I've been enjoying Crazy Cajuns' good food and service since it opened, but the last few times I visited the quality of the food and service went down. I got a bowl of seafood gumbo that was watery and tasteless, and the waiter kept ignoring our table even though he walked back and forth in the small space a dozen times. Went to the register to pay without having our ticket, and the worker there wasn't very friendly either. Guess I'll just start eating at the cajun restaurant in Cahaba Heights now. read more

I tried this place out the other night. I heard this place talked up a lot so my expectations were high. I have to say it feel just a little under my expectations on my first visit. I got the catfish poboy and it was just ok. It tasted fine but not something that I would go out of my way for. However I don't think this is what they are known for. I saw a few people with the boil crawfish and the boiled shrimp and they both looked amazing and I think that's more there specialty so I'm looking forward to going back to try some. When in town this place is a MUST!!!! When you walk in and smell the seafood and seasoning, your mouth literally starts to water. The restaurant itself is very small and quirky and they have half dozen outside tables as well. The decor is dusty and odd but fun. Staff was very friendly and they all take your order, deliver the food and refill drinks if they see you need one, which is nice in case your server is busy. We ordered the friend green tomatoes which came with lump crab and dijon mustard sauce on top and they were so good. Also as an appetizer we had a dozen boiled shrimp which were freash and delicious. The seasoning was a perfect spicy taste. For my meal I ordered a blackened shrimp poboy and cup of seafood gumbo. The gumbo was so spicy and yummy and full of shrimp and crab. The poboy came on fresh bun full of huge gulf shrimp and nothing else and lettuce and red onion on the side, as well as a homemade spicy remoulade and cocktail sauce. My husband got a soft shell crab platter that came with two sides and he opted for the crawfish ettouffe and the absolute BEST cheesy grits we have ever had. It is a solid 4. Not truly authentic Cajun but better than most in Birmingham. Personally I'd tone down the decorations but I get it. Have pretty good beer specials if you like Mexican or domestic beer. Take your pick. If you like Southeast Louisiana cooking everything on the menu is pretty to very good. Smallish which they supplement with outside seating which is fine from October to April. There are table covers but I can't eat in 90 degree weather. Unless it's at a beach or lake anyway. This is a place I used to go to a lot when I lived nearny. Don't make it over as often now but when I do it always makes me happy. read more

When we went it was on a Tuesday night and it wasn't too busy. We had about 10 people in our party and decided to sit outside. The small place is what it is and has been for years. Extremely slow service, cold food and only ok Cajun food. I thought the crawfish ettoufee was overly spicy with out real flavor. I love spicy but with taste and this was lacking. I went here with a friend and I had their seafood gumbo and a cajun pasta dish. The Seafood Gumbo was dark and rich yet REALLY spicy ( Which I'm OK with. ) I'm a bit of a gumbo snob so I have to remember that I am reviewing for a cajun place in Birmingham not in New Orleans where they have access to all the fresh seafood at cheaper prices. The cajun pasta was good as well. The only thing I sort of raised an eyebrow at was the bread pudding. The pudding itself was dark and good but the rum sauce had a good flavor and was really runny. They also covered the bread pudding in whip cream. I have never actually seen that before and would prefer it without. Overall very good and decently priced. read more

First time here, had 1/2 Po Boy & Gumbo which were great. Not a lot of space, but lots of character, casual atmosphere, & friendly staff.

This is a regular dinner spot for me and my husband. The food is always good and always spicy! Just a warning that some menu items may be too spicy for a lot of people. I usually get fried oysters along with the jambalaya and mashed potatoes--both are really fabulous, but again, they are very spicy. My husband loves the gumbo. The wait staff can be hit or miss--some are really friendly and on top of their game, others not so much. Overall, we will keep coming back for more! read more

My husband and I come here when we miss NOLA food. Such great flavor! I recommend the blacked tuna po'boy! My husband always gets the shrimp basket! The crawfish are to die for!!! I am hands down a crazy Cajun fan , the pink package had referred me and my husband. Ever since then when we are in Alabama I have to go at least once. The first time I went it was exceptional the only thing is they told me their rice didn't contain pork (later on I found out it did). Once our food was served, we never saw the server again. Finally, someone saw me writing this review and then showed us some attention. This place has good, high quality food. I did feel the price was too much and the amount of food was way too small. For about $17 i got blackened catfish and a sweet tea. The catfish was excelent but only about one small piece was served. The red beans and rice was excellent but only a small cup of it. The second side they got wrong, but it was good. It is a shame with excelent food they give you so little of it. The inult is greater because they serve it on dishes too large for the tiny tables, so you have to ballance a large plate with part of it hanging off the table. This only emphasises the tiny portions. Sorry guys but if i am paying the equivalent of a decent sized steak, i dont think a tiny portion of catfish is appropriate. Called in an order, asked for specifically for the seafood rotini with crayfish only. Mike took my order, asked the kitchen if they could do crayfish only, was told they could. Picked up the order, got home...only sausage!!! Called them, told them this was the second time this had happened. They did apologize but when I walked in no one had done anything about filling my order and the wait staff were laughing about the mix-up while I stood and waited for them to make my order right. I expected perhaps a partial return of my money, since it was a to go order and I had to make 2 trips to get one order. NOTHING. They must not need the business on a Thursday night. If I could give this restaurant a negative 5 I would. I called in my order for a pound of shrimp and specifically asked if they deveined them; to which the guy replied yes. I picked up my order and asked about butter; to which he replied its in with the shrimp. It was not deveined nor did it have any butter. I had to devein the shrimp myself which essentially washed off what two specs of seasoning they had on them. The potatoes were dry and not seasoned. After having to do all this work I simply gave the food to the lady at the front desk of the hotel of which I was staying. She took a couple of bites and did not want it either. I gave this restaurant $30 of free money and threw the food away. This is not a cajun restaurant. It is simply a mess. The sausage was hard as nickels. This food was THE worst I have ever had in my 40+ years of eating out. I would not want this if it were free. I am simply going to leave town tomorrow to go back from where I came. I will pretend I never heard of them. If you are looking for something plain and boring or to throw your money away this is the place for you. The crawfish platter is so good here! They get fresh shipments twice a week I believe. The service is mediocre although the staff seems like they've been trying to be more attentive within the last few times we've been here. The patio is a nice place to eat and drink on a nice night. read more

Excellent food! It was a Saturday night so it was very busy and it took a little while to get our drink order in and to get our food, but for a busy night, it wasn't that bad! We had the alligator tail appetizer, nice sized chunks, the perfect size for two people to share, very tasty! I got crab claws, which were excellent, and crawfish etouffee which was quite spicy, but very good. My boyfriend got the Blackened Fish Ponchatrain, which had a delicious creamy garlic sauce on noodles with artichoke hearts, a nice piece of blackened snapper, and a whole fried soft shell crab.
