Good food VERY small portions for the price. My order was made and waiting for me before my estimated ETA which was good. The Creole Seafood Dip was FULL of flavor. I wish it was served with tortilla chips instead of bread (which is nothing special) but never the less it was VERY tasty and had a hint of spice which wasn't too overbearing. The portion was very small for $15 though. The Bourbon Street Fettuccine on the other hand was very very bland. I had to add in my own seasonings and the shrimp and chicken tasted like they had no kind of seasoning. I would not get that again. I'm giving this restaurant 4 stars mainly for the excellent customer service. I came here on a Friday evening with my daughter because she was craving crab claws. Our waitress was very, very nice and personable and knowledgeable. Any questions that I had she always had an answer for and she was very patient with me as I am kind of a picky eater. The crab claws were amazing the seasoning on the crab claws Were a hit. I ordered the redfish Rockefeller and my daughter ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich. Let me say the red fish Rockefeller has a distinct taste. It is very overpowering from the fish. It has a sweet onion taste and if you like that, then I would recommend this dish, but I didn't like it at all. Our waitress was very nice and told me to pick another dish. I decided to go with chicken dish. I think it's called Bayou chicken I'm not quite sure but it has a crawfish Louie sauce. I asked for the sauce on the side just in case I didn't like it and I'm glad I did. The sauce is thick, very thick like a gravy and was tasteless. I told her I would just pay for the entrée and not worry about sending it back, but the manager came over and asked me how was the dish and I told her I wasn't a fan but I would pay for it. He said no and brought me the menu again and told me to pick another entrée I was surprised because normally by this time you know, people are over it and, not really willing to please the customer but they were. I decided just to play it safe and go with fried shrimp which came with fries and coleslaw. I'm glad I chose this dish because I really enjoyed it. Craving some Cajun on a Sunday afternoon. Catfish Pontchartrain, catfish was seasoned right and cook perfectly, the Louie sauce delicious. I wish I didn't have to finish, the stuffing was a cold gelatinous mess. I understand the kitchen was short handed this day as was the front of the house. The service was great, one take out order, 11 tables full, 4 at the bar and these Two ladies took care of us with a speedy smile while also bussing tables. Great job ladies. I'm a fan of Cajun Steamer. The original location is in the Patton Creek shopping center in Hoover. This location is in Cahaba Heights, and I like the layout here better. It seems more strategically planned. The bar is on one end of the dining room, and there is a connected outdoor dining patio.. My friends Craig, Robin, and I had lunch on Tuesday. We were seated promptly, and our waitress was wonderful. Even the manager checked on us mid-meal to make sure we were satisfied with everything. I consider their 1/2 poor boy and cup of gumbo one of the best lunches in Birmingham. I had the shrimp poor boy (fries, but you can get them grilled). The poor boys are prepared "dressed" (lettuce, tomato, and pickle) and a roulade dressing. I love the seafood gumbo. read more

I really enjoy the casual and fun atmosphere of Cajun Steamer in Cahaba Heights! I'm a big fan of raw oysters,and this has been my go-to place for a while to satisfy my craving. Fresh, salty, and cold! I can also knock out my crawfish cravings here when in season. Nicely seasoned and not too spicy. Those are my staples, but I always like to add in something each time. The Creole Seafood dip appetizer is really delicious. I ordered it for the first time recently, and It is packed with seafood and flavor. I believe it's worth the price, and I would definitely order it again. I've had their red beans and rice and the gumbo often, and I think they both have a nice depth of flavor. My boyfriend is a big fan of Po-Boys, and he was not disappointed with the shrimp po-boy. Lots of shrimp lightly breaded and crispy, not greasy, and the bread was great. Another recent first for me was the beignets. They were probably a little denser than normal beignets, but the fluffy parts were really airy and good. I've enjoyed their Cajun Steamer French 75 (a nice light. Drink with gin, lemon juice, and top with champagne) and they have a frozen machine which includes a Bushwacker to give you the feeling that you're on vacation somewhere. We've had excellent and friendly service each time we've been. Emma has taken care of us many times, but everyone we've encountered has been very welcoming. Was in the mood for some good ol' cajun food and decided to give this place a try, and needless to say i was pleasantly surprised! The food was delicious, seasoned to perfection, and sooo tasty. The portion size was great great, i couldn't even finish my plate. I came during lunch hours, so it was not busy at all and our food came out pretty quick. i believe we were the only ones there, besides from the people sitting at the bar, so our server was very attentive. the vibe is pretty chill and laid back, i loved that they even have mardi gras beads all over the place for decorations. overall, i rate this restaurant 5/5 and you should definitely check them out the next time you're in the mood for some authentic new orleans/cajun cuisine. read more

It's been a long while since I've visited Cajun Steamer. My favorite dish there is the Bayou Chicken so I was excited to get it again. I think the recipe must have changed over the years, it just wasn't as tasty as I remember. And the stuffing clearly outweighed the amount of chicken. Very small piece of chicken. The red beans and rice as my side were delicious tho the service was spot on. Why 3 stars? For a Tuesday evening, dining with my adult daughter, the live music was so loud and obnoxious that it totally ruined conversation. read more

I have been to the location in Hoover numerous times. But I am glad to have one much closer to our house. It has been years since we went to the previous location and I was never impressed. But this location was amazing. We really enjoyed the service and the food. The brunch prices were also great. I had the Mardi Gras scramble and it was fantastic. Mimosas were also on point at a really good price for brunch. They have done a great job outfitting the space. I have since been there and had a couple of meals that were also really good. It was just a casual lunch on Labor Day weekend when the rest of Birmingham went to the beach .. and sat through that traffic jam on 65 South at Greenville. Y'all. Seriously. Enjoy your storms :) My youngest daughter was home from school, and we met her older sister and boyfriend at the Cajun Steamer. Service was super-prompt, our server was great but everyone there was attentive if we needed drinks refilled or anything at all. We had the Shrimp and Grits, the Voodoo Chicken, the Pasta Alfredeaux with chicken and I had the Redfish Rockefeller. My daughter and her boyfriend loved their entree - exactly as described and very tasty. The "Red Rock" was recommended and was just as good as billed. Bacony, creamy-rich with spinach, shrimp and redfish (which could be a much cheaper fish in disguise, because you'd never know), served over mashed potatoes, you should bring your appetite to finish this plate of deliciousness. I brought half of it home and can't wait to hear it up! Tab for four with cokes and a good tip was $100. A little expensive for lunch - especially with football blaring in the background - but definitely worth the price. I will be back for sure. read more

The service was excellent! But, the food was wayyyyyyy too salty. The batter on the crab claws was so salty, I asked if I could get a second order without the batter and lite cajun seasoning. They had zero seasoning and were loaded with so many shells, I stopped eating to prevent chipping a tooth. The cook needs to taste the food before sending it out. Cajun Steamer was a favorite restaurant, but something has changed and not for the better! Six in my family went there yesterday. One ordered the fried green tomato burger from the menu, and the server told her they no longer serve fried green tomatoes, so she had to order something else. Another person ordered fried sweet potato fries as a side (listed on the menu). She was told they no longer serve this side, but she could order any of the other sides listed. She selected crawfish ettouffe on the sides menu. I was entitled to a side with my entree, so I also ordered the crawfish dish. My wife ordered a po-boy sandwich (described on the menu as made on a special bread from New Orleans). The po-boy was not the N.O. bread. I'm from N.O. and I know she got something closer to a hot dog bun! One of or party did not get served when the others did, and finally her husband had to search down the server to get her selection. When the bill came, the crawfish ettouffee "sides" were charged extra, one listed at $3.59, the other was $2.00! When the server was queried about this (same server who had stated that any side could replace any other side) she responded that the extra charges were shown on the menu, even to saying that the difference in charge for the same exact side was on the menu. One word to describe this restaurant: Average(ish). Overall it wasn't bad but also it wasn't good. If this restaurant was a color it would be beige. Came in for dinner with the roommate with high expectations and excitement. Left the restaurant feeling like a child after being told Santa isn't real. First off - the bartender was struggling with 2 easy cocktails, a Cosmo and a Long Island. Both were heavily over poured with triple sec (and I'll guess lightly with the rest of the liquors). They were decently priced though. Ordered the peel and eat shrimp w cajun garlic butter and was utterly underwhelmed. It had a tinge of flavor but it was not giving garlic and was not giving cajun. Roommate got fire shrimp tacos and unlike the cavemen, this restaurant has not yet discovered fire. Taco Bell could honestly make a better fried shrimp taco. Lastly the service was manilla. Not horrible by any means but not anything to make up for the otherwise lackluster experience. Also this restaurant's music so obscenely loud, when I'm yelling my order to the server and she still can't hear me you might need to change something. Got the Cajun trio and it was just ok at best which was both surprising and annoying since any Cajun restaurant should have good crawfish étouffée, red beans and rice, and jambalaya. Very curious... so I've been to this location when it was a different business. I was curious how they were going to make it different. Yes food would be different but was it going to feel like the old place once I stepped in? Absolutely not! They have done an amazing job renovating the space. You walk in now and see no remnants of the former business just a new start as Cajun Steemer's bar and Grill. Let's start with our waitress- she was phenomenal! On top of everything, polite and overall great service from her. Management- came over to check on us make sure everything was to our liking. Unfortunately something you don't see very often anymore. The kitchen staff - we were there during shift change. The staff leaving made an effort to stop at our table wishing us an enjoyable evening and enjoying our food. I was very impressed with all of the staff! Let's move onto food nothing I had disappointed me. I highly recommend the gator bites and grouper as an appetizer. Oysters were delicious!
