Crazy Larry's has been my go to bbq joint since high school (2003). It's just as delicious today as it was back then. They are consistent and I always know what I'll get. I've never had anything bad. Crazy Larry himself introduced me to his wife and sister; it's a 25-year-old family business. The food is stellar!! Served piping hot and fast, no wait at all. They had a condiment bar with pickles, onions, apricot jam, etc and warm BBQ sauce! I had the rib combo with pulled pork and made a sandwich with the warm bun, coleslaw and pork - perfect! The potato salad had a lot of flavor, not your grandma's wimpy salad. The beans were great but I have a full day ahead of me and didn't want to eat too many...iykyk When I told Larry it was my first time in, he asked how I heard about the joint. "On Yelp!! I had the Adkin's Platter with sliced brisket and ribs. The ribs looked absolutely delicious, and Larry assured me that they were better than they looked. He was right! Most of the ribs I've had are coated in BBQ sauce, but these were not. They were hands-down the best ribs I've had in quite a while! The brisket was fall-apart tender. I got to meet Larry himself who was warm friendly and made me feel right at home. I asked what was good and they suggest the chopped brisket (because you know you've got to have brisket in TX). Crazy Larry's BBQ need to come with a disclaimer. If you do not like beans then this place is not for you. If you like beans then you will love this place. The reason I say that is because to me (maybe others will disagree) but there is a strong bean flavor to most everything even the BBQ sauce. The first time I had it I was thrown off and not a fan but when you get the BBQ Frito pie it will make that dish shine. We wanted bbq on our road trip. Found this place on Yelp since our first choice sold out. We ordered the brisket and pulled pork. The coleslaw was super soggy and the potato salad had way too much mustard IMO. The beans were just okay. The "cherry cobbler" was basically a dump cake with canned cherry pie filling. You know if they don't ask "lean or fatty" when ordering Brisket, then it's not real BBQ. This is NOT Texas BBQ, this is a waste of time and money. Don't let how full it is fool you, it's bad. The baked beans were good, but it's only cause I like garlicky things, they are not very good otherwise. The Brisket is dry and NOT actually smoked (If it is then it's not for any significant amount of time). I'm honestly astonished that this place is in business. So, I don't get it. I see all kinds of great reviews, but the place is mediocre at best. I've eaten barbeque from coast to coast and consider it an art form... The meats aren't bad. The ribs were fabulous (just the right amount of spice, And a nice thick bark worth meat just falling off the bones), but the brisket sandwich was disappointing. It tasted like it had been sitting, and had a school cafeteria feel. The house barbeque sauce is sickly sweet - and completely over powers the meat. The sides were an absolute mess. The mac and cheese tasted like raw flour, the baked beans were soggy and so sloppy they looked like soup, the coleslaw was inedible and the potato salad probably came from a deli. When you walk in the door your greeted by Larry(owner) and his wife Jennifer. They are amazing and welcoming. The first time I thought this place was okay but the second and third times I thought it was really good! I have had the ribs a couple times and the Frito pie. I like that they have smaller portions for lower prices for someone like me that's on a budget. I'd love to order a large meal and have a bunch of leftovers but I actually have leftovers even with the smaller portions. The guys that work there are super nice and very helpful and give you good tips. I'm up in that section of town occasionally so I usually just stop by when I'm in the area. They have one thing that I haven't seen anywhere else, stewed apricots in a bowl by the condiments and they are delicious.. I think I would come back just for that. A spoonful of it makes a great side to your barbecue. They have a drive-thru although I rarely use drive-thrus but a nice convenience for those that don't want to have to get out to their car to pick up a to-go order. There is plenty of parking and it's easy to spot from the street. They don't have tap water available but they sell their water bottles for only $0.50. I guess they had a problem with teens coming in and asking for a glass of water and then using it to drink the pop without paying for it. Yet another Yelp failure. What's with the 4-5 star reviews? Staff were fine, prices reasonable. But the food. C"mon. I had expectations that were not remotely met. Brisket was dry. Sausage and Hot Link were no better than what's offered in your local supermarket. Beans too salty. Potato salad had an off flavor. Part of it wanted to be mustard based, the other vinegar. So far I'm impressed. I've only tried the Frito Pie so far, but it was DAMN GOOD! I can't say anything about the actual BBQ yet, but you can bet I'm dying to try it now. For $9, you get a full Frito Pie, which is a huge plate of Fritos, baked beans, pulled pork, and cheese. For an extra $1, you can get it "moose" style - which means you also get chili. To me, you HAVE to get it "moose" style! The crispiness of the chips mixed with the tender baked beans, hearty chili, chewy pork and the gooey cheese make for a very tasty dish. The "cherry" on top was the BBQ sauce. It's sweet and tangy and I want to put it on everything. lol There's no waiter service. You order up front and then carry your food to your table on a tray. After you eat, you have to bus your own table. You put your plates and silverware into the bucket and the napkins and cups into the trash. It's not a lot to ask, but I don't like having to clean up after myself when I eat out. As much as I loved the Frito Pie, it's impossible to rate an restaurant completely based on it. Even if the pulled pork, which is the only "BBQ" aspect of this Frito Pie, was bad it would've been masked by the chili, cheese, and sauce. So for now, Crazy Larry's earns a solid three stars. Stay tuned for a future update when I go back to try the ribs and brisket. I can't wait to go back again!
