This salon is beyond incredible! My story is interesting. I used to live in California, and found a hairdresser I loved there and paid top dollar for highlights. I have since lived in Santa Fe, and the Boston area, and have only gone to very expensive salons to meet the standards of what I had in California. I have not found it until now. Since the pandemic I have been doing my own highlights, and 2 days before being in a wedding I messed my hair up royally with bleach. I called them with one day to spare with blotches all over my head, and they squeezed me in with Sarah without time for a consultation to help me fix it before the wedding. There wasn't even an appointment open, but they stepped up to help and made time for me. Without an official appointment, this was supposed to be a "quick fix", but It's probably the best highlights job I've ever had. Sarah is an absolute magician. She is incredible! Trust me, if you could see the before pictures, you would be amazed. It was bad. Like really bad. Thank you Sarah! The additional point I want to make about this place is the glowing and wonderful energy of the salon. It's so vibrant, and everyone is so nice. As soon as you walk in there, you feel such a wonderful community of talented women who are really good at what they do, and just incredibly friendly to each other and their guests. Matilda has been cutting my very short pixie style hair for over 10 years. I won't let anyone else touch my precious locks! I followed her from Davis Square, to Arlington, and now to Lexington. She is very talented at shaping many different styles, always with a feminine flair. Best of all, Matilda's cuts look good right away and 6 weeks later- I get hair compliments even when I'm itching for a trim. She also never bothers me about dyeing my grays, despite the fact that color is a huge money maker. I even referred friend a with long, heavy hair to Matilda; the friend came back very happy with much lighter but not much shorter hair. Most importantly, this salon is always being cleaned! Whenever I am there, I see sweeping and wiping being quietly completed as the stylists work with clients. The salon also recently upgraded their scheduling system so that I now get automated reminders of upcoming appointments by text, email, or voicemail. The variety of communication methods makes re/scheduling super easy. My favorite part of this salon, however, has been watching young women progress from receptionist to assistant to licensed hairdresser with her own chair/clients. Over the years I have observed the ascent of at least 6 different stylists from answering the phone and greeting clients to actually cutting hair and doing color. I actually got my hair cut and my normal blow-dry combo that I get done before my best friends wedding and I got an insane amount of compliments on my hair! Haley is my go-to hair stylist. She knows my hair so well, I went from severely damaged long permed hair (previously treated somewhere else) to a very short stylish bob cut to trying out the ombré in different shades, then having healthy layered long straight hair with beautiful balayage throughout. Haley is both professional, patient to listen carefully when I tell her what I want and also takes Coved19 safety seriously. She's all in all my go-to girl. I was there for my first time after reading the nice reviews. I had asked for Hailie and was super excited to get my daughter's hair the very first time. The service and ambience was very good but the results were far from what we expected.We had a picture of what we wanted but the balayage came out very different. Hailie informed us that, that's what she could do to her hair, which was not correct. I have been to a few salons for my balayage and the color can definitely be lifted up.The results were not satisfactory. My daughter is so disappointed and I really dont know if they can be fixed to her liking any more. I dont think one should go by just the reviews. Had I known I would have not been willing to spend that much just to try out a new place. read more

I cannot express how happy I am with my experience. I have always had very long hair and this time Tina (thank you Tina!) convinced me to chop it all off and I cannot believe how happy I am with my new cut. Her criticisms of my previous cut were dead on and now my new haircut is fresh, modern and easy to maintain. SUPER HAPPY!!! Also, just a side comment... Tina did an awesome job cutting and styling my hair. I came into creative expressions with long hair (to the bottom of my shoulder blades) with years of damage from highlighted and bad keratin towards on the bottom. Pretty from a few feet away, but crunchy and frizzy up close. I was sad to have to make the chop, but Tina made it as painless as possible. I showed her a few pictures of lengths and styles I liked, but I honestly wasn't even sure what my natural hair texture would be like, it's so dead. She got the length perfect and added some really subtle, beautiful layers that make my hair bounce. It's so much healthier, shinier, and softer and I feel amazing. I got my hair bleached with super short notice (literally the night before), and everyone here was super helpful. I have thick, unwieldy, and very dark Asian hair, and it took around 5 hours for the whole process. I've recently moved to the Boston area and it's always hard finding the right hair dresser, let alone an affordable one too. Not only was I able to schedule an appointment for the day of, but I was greeted and whisked away by the super friendly staff - Sarah. She was so attentive to all of my needs, took her time, and certainly did not rush me what so ever. I've been to other hair salons where they don't give a rats ass about who's in front of them and what their needs are, as long as they make a buck. Not only did Sarah listen to my concerns, needs, and took her time, she was able to deliver a fabulous hair cut and I loved how she perfected every chop. I moved from Maryland and I wanted to check off one thing out of my bucket list and that was to get highlights. I found this salon through yelp and figured since its pretty close and it has parking was a plus. On the day of my appointment I was running late and Sarah was very nice about it. I told her that I was new to the area and that it was my first time getting color in my hair. She listen to all my questions and concerns. When the process started she made me feel comfortable and explained what she was doing. I appreciated that she took the time. Sarah gave my hair a subtle highlights to ease me to the process and cut my hair perfectly. She also gave suggestions how to take care of my hair. It was my first time going to the salon and the salon was very clean, bright, and has a inviting feeling. Most of all the staff was very friendly. If you are looking for Matilda (as you should be) she is now in Lexington. The Arlington Creative Expression closed down recently. I have been coming to Matilda for haircuts for over two years now and I am never disappointed. I have short fine hair (but thick) and I always get a great cut here. Lexington is a little farther out for me, but it is on the 62 busline from Alewife (and the bike path) and it is a beautiful little salon with lots of windows and very friendly people. And, you can get an affordable haircut here--$39 for a cut and blow dry. I highly recommend it! read more

When my wife and I first moved to Boston we quickly went in search of new, fresh haircuts. The first place we tried was less than adequate so we landed at Creative Expressions when it was in Arlington. My wife sat down in Sarah Fahey's chair and said, I need you to fix this terrible haircut." and Sarah goes, "I'm glad you said it!" and proceeded to fix both our hot messes. There are two relationships that, when you find the right one you never let go; those are your therapist and your hair stylist. Not only does Sarah do an amazing job with whatever your cut or color needs are, but she's super friendly and authentic. Kaylee gave me a great cut : from long hair to a chic bob after I asked her to give me a new look since I had just given birth and desperately needed to feel beautiful! She did exactly that! Creative Expressions salon is the definition of a gem I searched high and low for, but was hidden right beneath my nose. I lived down the street from the salon for over 15 years and never thought to try it out. Eventually, after reading reviews and looking at photos of clients' hair online, I scheduled an appointment. Since I first went to Michelle in July 2017 and returned this week (December 2017) I have been happier with my hair cut and color than ever before. I have naturally dirty blonde hair and like to color it to an ashy lighter blonde. Many stylists have trouble achieving a bright enough but also well toned color. Michelle, on the other hand, seems to have no trouble with this. She is able to mix a beautiful color and read how long an individuals hair needs to set to get the best color pay off. The layers she has done for me really complicate the shape of my face and she was able to make my thick hair feel light and airy! I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a well blended and bright color (which, let's face it, is everyone who colors their hair) as well as great conversation. I went in for my appointment at Creative Expressions right before a job interview, desperate to get rid of my overly-processed brassy blonde hair. Sarah put me at ease right away, we brainstormed, and she got it done. I left there feeling relieved to have found a great new stylist, and confident about my upcoming interview. She restored my hair to a natural looking base, and gave me highlights which really complement the base color. I am not normally in the area, so this is a break from my go to stylist, however I couldn't have been happier. Kay did a great job on my one process color to cover my roots. She matched the color perfectly. I really liked the haircut as well, she listened to everything I asked from the length, to the color. She did an amazing job on the blow dry and styling too.
