I typically like businesses/ventures run by mom-and-pop or husband-and-wife, and this place is all the above. Steph and Louis are affable, easy going, and hard working. My go-to here is Ericka...like a genie, she consistently grants me my three simple wishes when it comes to a haircut: 1.) Don't cut off my sideburns, 2.) Don't cut off my ears, 3.) Don't give me Jim Carrey's haircut from Dumb and Dumber. When my wife and I first moved to Lexington I tried all the different salons in Lexington Center. All the women that worked at these salons seemed to have more issues than Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes combined. At one salon I had one muchacha that was cutting my hair talking to her pal about getting trashed the night before, having unprotected sex with some meat head from Quincy, and feeling "wicked" hungovuh. It wasn't reassuring that her hands were trembling like Muhammad Ali when she was using the shears near my pointy Vulcan-like ears. No explicit raunchiness and never any hint of pretense at this place...Muy bueno. Everyone here - besides me of course -seems to be pretty hip and stylish, but definitely not snooty. read more

After seeing all of the awesome reviews, I decided to check this place out. I went for a trim and was not awed. The cut I got is fine, but I had a very "meh" experience. No frills, rough with the hair brush... Also, I'm not a fan of having a stylist shout in my ear so she can talk to her friend across the room. And 35 minutes from the time I walked in the door until I walked out? Not sure if the stylist was racing herself or is just that awesome that she can work that fast, but I've never spent less than 50 minutes in a chair due to my curls. Though this salon is $2 cheaper than my current salon and down the street from my office as opposed to the 30 minutes I have to drive to my current salon, I'm going to splurge and spend the $2 and continue driving out of my way until I find something better in the area. Probably won't come back here again unless I'm in dire need of a cut and can't wait another minute. read more

I love this salon. The folks there are all friendly and the owners both work there (I think that usually makes a huge difference). Since my first appt there they all have treated me as a regular. i have always gone to April (recommended to me from someone I trust). April is a terrific colorist, finds the right shade for my skin tone every time..and I switch from blonde, brunette to auburn. Her cuts are terrific and she never pushes products or services (for the record no one there does - I hate when places do that) but she makes great suggestions when I inquire. I love the look and feel of the salon, they recently updated their look and it's even fresher than it was, cozy but sophisticated. The salon is located in lex center and parking isnt usually an issue but bring a few quarters and give yourself five extra minutes since it is metered street parking. I love that they email receipts now. If they could find a way to do online booking and appt confirmations that would be amazing! read more

Shannon is my girl! She is really good. I always get compliments and asked who cuts my hair and two of those people that asked were other stylists from other salons. I've been going to her for about 5 years. She's creative, but not pushy and listens to what her customer's want. If I say only an inch off the back, only an inch comes off. She makes great suggestions when I say I need a change, but she does what's best for you and your tastes and doesn't hit you with her "vision" of what your hair should be like. LOL! She treats me like her client, not her art project. I trust her, and when it comes to women and their hair, that is very important. The Salon it self is a great environment. Its casual. Everyone is friendly, not snobby or stuck up. You can always find parking too. I will NEVER go back to Newbury St or Boston salons again. read more

I came here as a walk-in on a whim after seeing the Yelp reviews. I was just in Lexington Center for a few hours passing through and had time to kill. I felt like doing something with my hair. I got a trim and the haircut was fine. However, I felt that the hairdresser rushed me. I asked her specifically to show me how to use a curling iron the way that her hair was curled, and she said she didn't have time. I have very manageable, shoulder length straight black hair. It is not difficult to style. I was disappointed by the lack of care given to me. I understand that I was a walk-in; however, they did not have to schedule me if they did not want to give me their full attention. Or, they did not have to schedule me to someone who had to leave the salon right after my haircut was done. I didn't ask for the hairdresser to curl my entire head. I just asked her to demonstrate the technique. I did see that other customers there were pretty happy that day, including a young man/teenager who was a college student and came back to town to get his hair cut by his regular haircutter. So I would say this salon seems like a good place if you are a local and you know the staff. read more

Very easy to talk to and does a great job on my hair. Rarely do I have to wait. The place is clean and comfortable. I have now lived in the area for over 5 years and needed to switch salons from my 20+ year Newbury St hairdresser. I'm so happy to have found Stephanie Louis Salon. It's family owned and has a nice close knit vibe. Stephanie has done wonders to my hair. She blends my color perfectly and her cuts reflect her decades of experience. She has true talent and is a great conversationalist. I never feel rushed and she always remembers me and asks about my kids and husband. Even my husband now sees Louis who does the best male cuts. Another uber talented stylist, Christina, does the most impressive balayage highlights and colors. If I were brave enough I would ask her to take my color to blonde. Also noted is another assistant, Kerrie. She is so friendly and authentic. She does a wonderful shampoo as well. Really, this salon has the perfect team. They have always taken great care to keep their salon clean and welcoming and of course provide the best hair cuts and color along with great conversation. Since Covid, they have taken it to another level of professionalism. I was the only client in the salon when I had my hair done the last 2 times and was impressed with their commitment to keeping a safe environment for their customers. Aside from all the state mandated rules about cleaning and mask wearing, etc, I noticed they have added an air purifier and witnessed them cleaning everything, before and after use while I was there. In the 28+ years that I've had hair, 5 people have cut it (one was my dad). Stephanie has occupied almost half of that time. I love her! I like that my appointments don't go on forever (I don't color my hair but my mom's color always comes out great) and Stephanie remembers "that thing that you did 3 haircuts ago? Can we do it sort of like that but longer". My brother, who lives on the west coast, waits until he comes home to have Lou cut his hair. Needless to say it is a challenge each time but he does a great job. Stephanie also did my hair for my wedding; it was exactly what I wanted and absolutely beautiful. I was very disappointed. The stylist was inexperienced and gave me a horrible blunt bob, when I specifically asked for layers. I showed her several photos of the cut I wanted before letting her touch my hair. "Oh yeah. No problem." By the time I could see what a crappy job she was doing, I knew it was too late. I should have known better though. She looked like she was about 18 years old. Still growing out my Supercut, waiting to have it fixed properly. Also...all the stylists were yelling to each other over the screaming hair dryers, deep in conversation with one another and their assistants. It was unrelaxing, loud, over-priced, cramped, kind of dirty, disappointing. I would never go back. The key to their success is their location. Nothing more. read more

Went there for my second haircut in the area after moving to town. Was lucky to get Louis to cut my hair and I know I'm not going to anyone else for as long as I can. I'm getting married soon and was nervous to find someone who could cut my hair the way I wanted and was very impressed. Add to that that Louis gave me a lot of recommendations for restaurants in the area and those were great too! Can't beat the convenience or the quality of the cut. Twice I have scheduled appointments over the phone, moved meetings, found childcare coverage etc, and twice I have found upon arrival that I had no appointment scheduled in their system. I LOVE MY HAIR! I have very thick long hair that I like to keep as blonde as possible. I have gone to all sorts of salons where I have paid a fortune for highlights and still left with roots or with multiple colors of hair! I found Erika last year at Stephanie Louis because it was near my work. This was the best thing that ever happened to my hair. She colors the roots before even doing the foils so that I have absolutely no growth line when I leave. She got the color I wanted and is super friendly and down to earth. The whole salon is friendly and down to earth these people aren't catty and competitive like in other salons. When I wasn't able to get an appointment with Ericka I saw another stylist with no issues who consulted with Erika on how to color my hair. What a difference from my experiences on Newbury st! The best part about this salon? The prices are completely reasonable I would be paying double at any other salon for a half-ass job. I've been going to Stephanie since I was a teenager and she worked in another salon. Since then I have lived in Boston and Washington DC and have tried other high-end stylists on Newbury Street, etc., but I find that no-one colors my hair the way Stephanie does. I always get compliments on my sunny blonde highlights that are very natural looking. Stephanie always takes the extra time to style my hair if she knows I am going out that evening, and she and her husband Lou are so much fun to be around. I look forward to every visit! The customer service at this salon is the best I've experienced. I am new to the area and was referred to this salon by a few different people for a color and cut. My hair is dark brown, long and incredibly thick. I walked in and asked for an ombre to blonde ends. My hair didn't take to the color as we all thought, leaving us a little confused. I immediately knew I was in good hands when both Christina and Stephanie worked on my hair until it was the perfect shade. The attention and care I got to make sure that I left the salon feeling great was incredible. They both even stayed late, making sure I left satisfied and happy. The staff is fantastic and the atmosphere is fun and relaxing. I live in the city and will make the longer drive to only go to this salon! She didn't seem to hear my request and simply cut straight across the back which resulted in an oddly uneven look when the hair moved in front of my shoulders. I had to trim it myself. After my hairdresser left my usual salon, I had to look for a new salon so I tried Stephanie Louis after reading good reviews. I don't think I'll be returning. I had an appointment but had to wait on the awkward/cramped waiting bench for about 20 minutes. I felt unwelcome the whole time - everyone else there was clearly a regular and as I result I felt like I didn't belong there. I didn't request anything complicated for my cut - just long layers and a blow dry. The stylist talked me out of getting the amount that I initially wanted cut off, and as a result my hair didn't even look like I got it cut. I also felt like she rushed, especially during the blow dry. Overall, I paid too much for a cut and experience that was really nothing special. read more

Bring your safety glasses if you are getting a color!! After reading the reviews on this salon I was looking forward to a excellent experience. While the hairdresser who did my hair was competent, I couldn't believe how she slapped the hair dye on my head, to the point where droplets were flying everywhere, including on my face. I told her I was going to put on my eyeglasses to protect my eyes but that didn't stop her. After the coloring, she spent about 10 minutes cutting my hair, she was in a rush to finish. The result was OK - but not worth the $130 price tag. Management needs to train staff in developing more refined chair side manners if they are going to charge such a high price for their services. They should also not pummel new customers for their personal data as they pay. I don't think I'll be returning to this place. read more
