I went in to check it took 10 minutes to find and at some point, they looked kind of panicked that they didn't actually know where it was. Finally, three months later, I called to check and the owner calls me leaves a message that they misplaced it in another pile and it has been ready, they just didn't call. Finally as I pay $120 for a slight adjustment the girl tells me if I use a credit card they are going to pass the service charge onto me. This is absolutely insane for a business that charges an exorbitant amount of money for their jewelry. She argued with me trying to educate and Millenialsplain to me why they were passing the cost on to me. I understand there is a service charge with a small business, but this is an establishment that has been in Chapel Hill for a while. Shame on you for bad business practices!

I've had this business create a ring for me and repair a ring for me. I described what I wanted and…read moreasked for an estimate and a drawing before the work was done. The jeweler did the work without giving me either. I didn't like that he took it upon himself to decide what I'd like without talking with me as agreed. I did like this ring. The repaired ring is another story. I asked that the prongs be tipped because the stone was loose. The repair took weeks longer than promised. When I got the ring back, I saw that the jeweler had again made a decision without consulting me first. Instead of tipping the prongs as agreed, he created a new setting and a new leaf probably because the ring was damaged during the repair. The new leaf did not match the original, and the jeweler insisted it was the original, all while the original leaf and leftover gold from the repair sat in a bag on the counter between us. Worse, the setting was crooked. The jeweler insisted it had always been like that. I told him I'd worn the ring for 40 years and it was never like that. I spent six months trying to find someone to repair the damage, but no one would touch it. Finally, a friend of the jeweler's convinced me to take it back to him, and he agreed to repair it free of charge. The setting was straightened somewhat, but it has since crumbled, and the ring is no longer wearable.

The owner/manager (not sure who she was) was awful! She did not treat the young guy with respect and honestly made me feel like a hostage. The young guy saw me looking at a bracelet and overheard me comment that I wished it were just a little bit different. He was super nice and offered to restring the bracelet to my liking. So kind! The older woman BURST out of the back room and started LOUDLY telling everyone in the shop that she had been in a meeting and started asking people how she could help them. The young guy had been calmly helping everyone before her chaotic vibes burst into the room. She took over helping me and talked super fast and really loud and kept telling me it would take a long time to restring the bracelet and she acted like I was a huge inconvenience. I kept saying not to worry about it and I would look around the shop some more. She would not allow that. She was beyond worried about it. She was so abrasive. She kept commanding the young guy to go in the back room and look for some special bowl of beads. He went back twice but could not find what she was asking for. He looked terrified to tell her that he could not find her special bowl. Why didn't she just go get it herself? Why would she not allow me to look around the store? Why is she so loud and abrasive? She finally went to the back room to search for her special bowl and my friends and I bolted out of the store so fast. When we were passing through the threshold of the door to outside I could hear the woman YELLING from the back room for us not to leave!! It was so scary for me and I am sure every day working there is scary for the young guy. I sure hope he gets a job working somewhere else. If she was not the owner, I sure hope the owner takes this review into consideration. It didn't take me long to realize that being a master goldsmith isn't just about working gold into…read moresomething beautiful. It's also about working with jewels and precious metals to create one of a kind pieces. More than jeweler, a goldsmith learns and works with, the properties of the metal and the stones. Apex Peak Fest gave me a chance to stop by Virtuoso Jewels, a shop that's been closed during my other visits to downtown Apex. There, in a small shop upstairs I found a working studio -- there was no doubt about it -- the tools, the hammers, the workbench. Everything from this goldsmith, Larry, is done in the shop, the design, the creation and, should it become necessary, the repair. He has several projects working at any one time. There are three small display cases of work, two are his, a third is from Sheila, another artist who creates unusual pieces replicating old techniques. The cases displayed, among other things, a gorgeous opal and tourmaline pendant and for me, some wonderful black pieces I later learned were blackened silver drawn with gold. I never really considered how beautiful silver could be when it's tarnished, although mine doesn't blacken on its own nearly as perfectly as this. Still, it was a good reminder of appreciating something unusual.
