I had a blast here at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. This is a beautiful place to visit that is an excellent spot for hiking, biking and skiing. I have been skiing my whole life and have had Crested Butte on my list to ski for some time. I am glad that I finally made my way over here to ski their slopes. Crested Butte Mountain Resort is owned and operated by Vail Resorts. My buddy and I have Epic Passes and chose to ski here this past winter. This resort is geared toward intermediate to expert skiers as there are lots of blue and black runs. Overall, we had good snow and a fun weekend. We started our day off by taking Red Lady Express Lift from Base Area. We spent a lot of our time hitting the intermediate runs off of Paradise Express Lift. We eventually hit some black runs off of Silver Queen Express Lift. We didn't do it, but Rambo run is the steepest tree-defined ski trail in North America with a 55-degree pitch. That run looks insane. Crested Butte Mountain Resort opened in 1960. We stayed in town near the base of the resort and had a lot of fun. We were able to walk to the lift from our hotel. Crested Butte is a former coal mining town that is a popular tourist destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Mount Crested Butte is in the heart of the Elk Mountains and sits over 9,000 feet above sea level. The town is named after its iconic 12,168-foot mountain peak. You can see the peak while you ski from almost anywhere on the mountain. read more

Crested Butte Resort is an awesome skiing destination. It is set up well and relatively easy to navigate around the entire resort from the Front Side (the Base Camp area) to the lifts/terrain on the back side (Paradise Express, East River, Teocalli) as well as the Ten Peaks area! Approximately 40% of skiing trails are marked as Double Black Diamond Extreme, so if you're looking for the most challenging terrain, then this is the place for you! But even if you're not an "advanced expert," then there are still plenty of runs that you can take it easy on... or that will push you to keep on learning and getting better! Of all the Vail Resorts, I feel like the Crested Butte team was the friendliest and most welcoming. First time skiing here at Crested Butte and it was great! Temps were crazy cold but people were still out. Didn't seem to fully deter anyone. Lots of intermediate and black diamond terrain. Beautiful mountain and the kids had a great time. Lodge was packed at the top (typical) but we were surprised because it was such a cold day. We didn't anticipate as many skiers in negative temps. The lack of safety control and management at the resort is concerning. The excessive speeds near the bottom are ignored by the resort. No guest services no patrol present to regulate, other than slow signs (which obviously aren't enforced). If slow signs are the extent of their safety efforts, someone is going to get hurt or killed. Additionally lift operators away from the base, many sit, on phones or not paying attention. I see this more these last two years. Something has slipped. Other than that skiing, instructors, terrain is great. read more

Whenever I come to Crested Butte, I've had a great time. The skiing terrain is varied and interesting enough to keep you on its toes. My two favorite chairlifts are East River and the Silver Queen. The prices to ski are reasonable even though the location is more remote. read more

Was a little light on green terrain options. We covered the gamut in about four runs. The Silver Queen express lands you in blue and black territory only! This was a horrifying discovery for my rookie 12-year-old who was petrified by the narrow lanes and sheer dropoff. The ski patrol guys up top said, essentially "tough break, walk down," though they had sleds and such. I found that pretty unsympathetic, even if it turned out to be a satisfying man-up occasion. We couldn't have been the first unwary skiers to end up here, after all, even though it was admittedly my fault for not paying attention to the signs at the bottom of the lift. Fortunately, the kid handled the blue part with only two major breakdowns, and was then gleeful at his triumph. Still, I'm not used to a big ski mountain having only one lift option for green runs... To boot, the one green run lift went only halfway up the mountain, providing about 10 minutes of downhill time. The top of the mountain, and the top of the really cool gladey green run, Yellow Brick Road, could only be accessed from that blue/black landing spot of the Silver Queen. Apparently the other side of the mountain has a bunch of great blues, but this doesn't really serve a family experience. It's also worth noting that the lift lines were ridic. Even during COVID restrictions with reservation-only limited capacity, we waited in line for 30 minutes. It really put a damper on the experience. It was a good place to add to our CO repertoire, but we probably won't be going back. Breck is so much better. read more

I had such a wonderful time snowboarding this mountain!! Crested Butte offers runs for all levels. I hit pretty much all of the blue runs and really enjoyed them all. We were blessed to get to ski/snowboard three powder days in a row. What a pleasure it was! The lifts are pretty gentle which is nice for us snowboarders and I enjoyed the bars/restaurants in the mountain. Umbrella Bar was the cutest little spot for a drink and meal. Great local mountain. So fun it's part of the epic pass! Lots of stickers that say Vail Suck... so obviously some locals hate that the Epic Pass bought them into the conglomerate. Fun local mountain. Definitely a Smaller feel, but still plenty of terrain to explore. Great snow for almost closing day!!!!- skied 04/02/21 and they close 04/04/21. Minimal lines. Gorgeous views of snow capped peaks - 13,000 and 14,000 foot. Fun drive into Crested Butte-- through farm land, then you see the crested butte in the distance, then you pass through town then drive 3 miles to the mountain. Free parking at the base. I recently had a ski trip scheduled to Crested Butte and a few days prior to the trip I fell on the ice at home and hit my head. I ended up with a concussion and my doctor warned me not to go skiing. He said if I were to hit my head skiing I could get brain damage or even die. When I attempted to get a refund for my ski pass I was given the biggest runaround you can imagine! I submitted the official CT results that were signed by a radiologist but was told that I needed to get a doctors note. When I sent them the doctors note they told me it needed to have an actual signature on it. When speaking with the people that process the refunds they were cold and not willing to bend an inch. It became very clear to me that they were doing everything they could to avoid refunding my money. Never again will I ski a vail property, never! read more

My go to place to ski/snowboard!! Just on the back side of Aspen, about 18 miles straight line distance but a 4 hour car ride to get around the mountain. Just purchased by Vail and now part of the Epic Ski pass. Great place to ski but not the best for beginners. Greens are more like blues and blue are closer to blacks. Located in a great little town; you'll love Crested Butte and all the restaurants and shops. read more

This has been our favorite resort for winter fun for years. This year there has been a big increase in people so getting more crowded. Mostly Texans for some odd reason. Hopefully they keep it smaller so the town never loses its charm. We will have to see how the crowds are next year. If it gets too much more crowded we may have to find another resort but time will tell. read more

We purchased our epic ski passes over 2 months ago with plans to once again ski at CB during Thanksgiving 2020. Vail Resorts started a new reservation booking for skiing and it stinks! When they opened up reservations last Wednesday opening day tomorrow (Nov 25th) was blacked out. We continued to check the web site and it became "booked". The web site & Facebook continues to promote "Buy Your Epic Passes Now, We anticipate that we will have plenty of ski runs open to accommodate everyone" They don't have openings .......even for property owners who travel to CB every year for Thanksgiving opening and purchased epic passes months ago! If you are headed to CB and thinking about buying your passes, DON'T!! Buy a day pass at the ticket office and guarantee that you can actually ski before you rent equipment. We have been in CB for over a week and other than eating at McGills twice our trip is a bust. read more

They recommend that my 17 year old son enroll in the ski school since he had never been on the slopes. The ski school pace was so slow and they never took him up any lifts So I ended up having to work with him. as a result, he learned so much more that he was doing blue runs very effectively by the next day. They need to consider a better solution for people that have a quicker leaning curve. I also want to mention that was was overcharge a full day ski lesson that I booked early in that week by accident because their website pre- populated that date and not the one I was arriving on and they would not refund me any money. I thought that was lame especially since they could see the dates of the booked ski lifts tickets. Very annoyed at the Vail policies. Every part of the trip was awesome except this. read more

Had the hardest time getting the really expensive buddy passes. The website kept telling me something went wrong and to refrain from trying again. It Had me call a number then that lady couldn't help me so i had to call another number that went to the wrong department. When i finally got to Brian he was very helpful but come on Vail. Massive Issues with Vail Conversion and management is in chaos.. We were contacted a month prior to arrival that our flights were significantly changed and we would now have a 4.5 hr layover. Only option was to put us on another flight and we would have to pay more. Then we were contacted 2 weeks prior to arrival to inform us they lost all customers credit card info(who knows where) and had to recharge. Then when I looked at my reservation again, they had slipped a $265 charge for travel insurance that I didnt ask for. They refused to take it off. Then when we arrived they had lost our lift ticket reservations. Took an hour for them to print 3 tickets. And they said when it came over to the vail system it came over as 3 adult, instead of 1 adult and 2 young adults. I'll have to reconcile the bill when I get home. Then when we arrived at our condo we were informed that the hot tub was closed. The manager Cat, at the Plaza, who manages that property and the unit here at this property, gave us 2 options. Refund our entire reservation and put us on the street on a holiday weekend after 15 hours traveling from Florida, or give us $20 off per night, which she explained was way above and beyond what they would normally do and was extremely generous. When I asked why she couldnt make an exception and let us take a dip in the Plaza hot tub or another property she manages, she simply said she wasnt willing to. Period. No hot tub for you! Very disappointed. Be very wary booking through www.skicb.com. It's in chaos. I'm seeing bad reviews about the ski school reservations too. You may be charged for things they dont deliver, and they just seem more concerned with profits than making the customer happy (or just dont care). This is sad. Weve been coming to Crested Butte for the last 5 years. Unfortunately the Vail vibe is already evident and is turning this ski resort into a snobby, stubborn, profit-focused resort. It has lost the sense of integrity and friendly atmosphere we found so special. We had hopes of making Created Butte our forever family annual trip. If this is the new management at CB, it wont be. Theres a reason we came here the past 5 years, and not Vail. read more

Just stopped in to ride the Silver Queen ski lift to take in the scenery of the wild flowers in bloom. The lift was $23 per person for one ride which was a little steep but well worth the scenery we took in. If you purchase the tickets online you can save a few bucks. Would love to see the fall and winter views here. Lovely little place to visit. Best scenery anywhere. read more

Come on, manage the lift lines instead of trying to make it self service. And where did all the friendly staff go? Such a sad experience this year for our ski trip. There is now a pervasive corporate culture of just get things done fast with as few people possible, and just tolerate guests as a necessary evil instead of interacting with them and help make their visit to the mountain a great experience. We began visiting CB in 2007 and have visited every year since (except one due to injury). We love this town and mountain, but the change in resort ownership is evident and I think detrimental to what made this mountain great. It's becoming quite simply; common. And due to the transition to just another common resort we will consider a different location for our next ski trip after 14 years of visiting CB. read more

There are some bonuses to having a ski bum for a brother. While he was living in CB, I decided to make the drive from MN to check it out. What a lovely mountain. The added bonus was having bro to guide us around. Now, I can't say that I liked it as much as a Vail, but, to be honest, I'm a little bit more of a "resort" skier like Vail...but that's basically because I'm not a super awesome skier like him. But it's quaint and lovely. I hope to return sooner rather than later. read more

Amazing mountain with a great town to boot. This is the place you think of as a "classic" ski town. This is NOT a resort by any means. This is a ski town. Every person I ran into in Crested Butte were incredibly friendly and always looking out for one another. I am very happy with this resort. I mean, the views, THE VIEWS!! Wowza. So even if you're there to be a snow bunny, as apposed to a powder dog, you got yourself covered. My first time here I just opted to kind of wander around w/o a trail map... Started out well, found a few on-mountain bars (YEAH! The Paradise Warmer something or other had some fabulous bacon bloodys, and a pbr w/ a shot special for ST Patty's, heck yes), cus why not? Spring skiing is vacation skiing!! After riding skiiers left for awhile, I decided to take a detour and see the rest of the mountain. All was fun and games until I was trying to get back to the base... And that's my only beef, poor signage for the runs. After talking to a few locals and lifties, they finally guided me back to where I needed to be, but as far as someone not having a map (my bad) I was pretty clueless where the signs said "back to base area", but were still pointing to several different runs, making it sooorrrtttt of complicated to get back. Granted, now after my little exploration, I'll have a better idea for when I go back, cus heck yeah I will! I have to dissagree with other reviewers about there not being enough blues, I thought there were plenty. For not having very much base this spring, they did an awesome job with their grooming. Spring slush can be pretty hard to contend with to make even cords, but I didn't find many blemishes at all! And with or w/o a good snow they've got a great vertical rise to the mountain, and plenty of space for steeps n deeps. Even the green runs had some great character to them! YAY CB!!! read more

After finishing lunch, I went outside to pick up my skis and found that they were gone. The ski patrol got me to the base of the mountain and I anticipated that my day was over until my skis were located. I shared my story with one of the ski maintenance crew, Nate Hasselton. He gave me a set of skis free of charge to finish out the day. Another employee, Jen at CBMR, contacted other facilities along the base of the mountain to keep an eye out for my lost skis. I was totally impressed by their caring and willingness to help. Thank you so much, guys! My skis were located and returned to me the next morning. read more

I love it, I love it, I love it!! This quickly became one of my new favorite mountains. From the town, to the slopes, to the locals, this place was kick ass all around! Not many ski resorts have been able to maintain the old school feel that Crested Butte has, it hasn't been overdeveloped yet and still has some of the best extreme terrain in the US. Be warned, this is not a very good beginner mountain, it will chew you up and spit you out, the runs are STEEP...and I happily got my ass kicked by this mountain over and over again. I encountered more locals than tourists, and everyone of them was super friendly and willing to impart some knowledge about a hidden spot or good place to grab a drink. Can't wait to make it back here sometime, loved this mountain!! read more

We took a ski trip to crested butte this winter. I had gotten my girlfriend a five day trip as her Christmas present. We stayed at the elevation hotel which was absolutely outstanding. They offered free wine after the lifts closed. They had valet parking service for the duration of our stay which was very convenient. As far as the skiing goes it was wonderful for both of us. There is plenty of terrain for all types of skiers. Plenty of nice little green runs for my girlfriend to cruise on and plenty of steeper more challenging terrain for me to ride. Plenty of good places to eat on the mountain. As far as the town goes, I'd say this is probably the coolest ski town I have been to. Every single place we ate at was just amazing. The food is just great in This town. It's impossible to find a bad meal in crested butte. It's so hard to pick a restaurant for dinner when they are all so good. I would absolutely recommend crested butte for a ski trip. Absolutely perfect for families who have skiers of all different abilities. We really liked how the mountain was kind of separated in half by easy terrain and more difficult terrain and it was very easy to navigate. If you could time it right and hit this resort on a good snow day you'd be pretty happy I think. read more

An exhilarating ski mountain. Tons of double black extreme terrain for those seeking it, but a real plus for folks like me is the inclusion of groomed black runs. What a rush! International may be one of the best runs in Colorado. Intermediate and expert skiers can have a blast but beginners might bore a bit on the more limited number of green runs, none of which are up high on the mountain. The only thing that keeps this mountain from getting five stars is the poor (near non) management of lift lines. The poor design at the major base lifts on a busy weekend nearly produced fisticuffs on my latest trip. Four parallel lines with no merging guidance. It is a small thing, but for a mountain with a wonderful laid-back vibe, it is a jarring, tension-inducing omission. Notwithstanding that shortcoming (and lift lines are nothing compared to Summit County) I'll keep coming back! read more

Why is noone reviewing Crusty Butt? Oh, because it's off the beaten path, it's too far from Denver and Colorado Springs to easily do a day trip to, and the locals realize what a gem they have. I recall once taking an avalanche course and the instructor talking about how steep Crested Butte is and how it probably has some of the steepest in-bounds stuff in the country. Well, it's STEEP, and on a powder day that is damn fun! I easily had the best snowboarding weekend ever here, although to be honest it was dumping which helped a lot. The mountain itself is fairly small with limited actual runs. If you're a blue or green only skier or rider, you're going to get bored here over the course of a weekend or longer. If you're a black and/or double black kinda guy or gal, there's some really great stuff here and the trees are a blast as well. And then...there's the T-bar, and the hiking capabilities. Unfortunately, Intrawest recently bought Crested Butte. Let's hope they don't over develop it, and Crested Butte is able to keep its non-resort-y feel while still being a kick-ass place to catch some pow. read more

My only complaint was with the ski school. When you check in they put you in groups according to ability, my daughter's ability was between group 4 & 5 and after I explained to the instructor in group 5 that she has skied blues frequently but still "pizza's" through her turns, he said go to group 4. I explained to group 4 instructor that she needs to get parallel turning down, that's all I was looking for. After a full day lesson and only 2 students in the afternoon she still pizza's her turns... At the end of the lesson he gives a report card and said her next lesson needs to focus on weight shift and timing of weight shift... Well, that's what I thought the lesson was supposed to accomplish. He was a really nice instructor and my daughter had a great time in the school but I was disappointed that after a full day she was exactly where she was before the lesson. read more

I love me some CB. It is my happy place. Every time I've been there (in Jan or Feb), the snow has been plentiful. Unlike some resorts, they do not lie about their snowfall because they DO get a whole lot of snow. They get some COLD temps too, which I love. I do not like to sweat while skiing. The blue slopes are awesome. Even the greens are challenging. The staff at Butte & Co. are friendly and helpful. The Elevation Hotel and Lodge at MS are top notch. The free town shuttle is a fun experience as well - great people watching. Except for MLK weekend, go anytime during Jan. 1 - Feb. 17 and it will not be crowded. President's Day weekend - closing sees more crowds. read more

They were severely short-staffed for the children's activities, with most of them closed down for the day, but they did not tell us before we bought a day pass. Several different families were in the same boat and we all felt severely ripped-off and insulted. Give it a "pass". read more

My family and I fully enjoyed our experience with the resort. Although we did not stay in the hotels/suites/cabins at the resort, we rented ski's and snowboard equipment, lessons on how to ski and snowboard, and experienced the different slopes and lifts the resort had. All and all, we have very much appreciated the staff and the community of Crested Butte. Every one is so nice and the process of renting equipment was so easy and organized. An example of the impressive moments from the staff here was whenever I was so frustrated with my inability to pick up the ski talent that literally took off my skies and walked down the rest of the mountain- one of the CBMR employees skied down to carry my ski's and blocked the other skiers from trampling over me and offered me ski lesson coupons just to encourage me to not give up. He was so personable and ensured me that I would keep getting better with practice. As far as the family friendly aspect, I saw dogs (on leashes) just hanging out, there were children as litter as 11 months skiing down the green slopes, there were tons of ski instructors helping people of all ages learn to ski. The class I took were all adults with 7 people + the instructor and there were many comments about how the class I was in were one of the largest they had seen all season. It made me impressed that they had made it so easy for people to get one on one help so they could learn quickly and efficiently. As far as the quality of slopes go, I have heard nothing but great things from the experienced skiiers in my family and the unexperienced. The blue slopes are a little more on the challenging side: they are closer to greens than blues. So if you are comfortable with skiing then this is a great place for you to start. However, there are "magic carpets" and "peach tree" slopes for new skiier to start with. They have great restaurants, the people are SO NICE, and the resort in general isn't overly crowded which makes it so much fun for us to ski. AWESOME TIME!!! read more

February 2008, another great trip to Crested Butte. The snow is at historic high levels this year, a 90" base the other day. Crested Butte touts having more lift serviced extreme terrain than any other resort. It's true, but I'm not sure how many visitors really make use of all of it. I rarely do, which leads me to only 4 stars. They are lacking a good variety of intermediate level runs. The new owners have acknowledged this fact and are trying to add nearby Mount Snodgrass to the Crested Butte Mountain family. They face stiff competition as this has been denied before, even though their plans are scaled back compared to the previous efforts. Besides that, the new owners have spruced up the place and it does look better. Of course with new investment money, comes a way to recover those dollars and for that they've built large new condo buildings with more on the way. CB has always had minimal lift lines, partly due to its location, far from Denver and day trippers. It's one of the main reasons I return year after year. The locals are pretty nice and more friendly to the touristas than many other CO resorts. The T-shirt vendor stand/wagon near the slopes has been there for over 10 years. A woman named Angie recently bought it from the guy who ran it all that time. Some of the best quality shirts I've ever owned. A great cut, almost a tall fit and durable wash after wash. If you're buying a tshirt while you're there, get them there. read more
