Let Bea take you downstairs to show you where slavery took place on the MD side. The most interesting topic in the world to me is the Civil War and 18th/19th century American history so I'm always looking for a place to truly take me back. The proprietors, Greg and Sue, provided a warm welcome and a tour of the property (we arrived before other guests had checked in.) The tour included the perhaps "haunted" Paul room and the remainder of the house that's completely decked out with Civil War memorabilia. Later, we discovered that much of the memorabilia exists because the Rosensteel family played a large role in the area's history! The entire property is a beautiful re-creation of the appropriate historical time, with beautiful wallpaper and antique furniture in every room, incredibly comfortable beds and bedding, and striking quilts. Cozy living, dining, and outdoor seating areas create a great environment where you can meet and chat with other guests, read any one of probably hundreds of available Civil War books, or observe the stunning scenery outside. Throughout our stay, our hosts were friendly and informative, with such amazing stories! Each day's breakfast was delicious (I'm talking to-die-for French toast and fresh strawberries!). I hope that as you read any of the negative reviews of this property (though there are few), you focus on the important criteria, not trivial concerns such as "the water for tea not being hot enough" (it was fine for me) or "Oh no! I can't have food in my room." (No, you're not children, but have you seen the mess some adults make with food? I have!) I was flying solo, so I stayed in the smallest (cheapest) room - Violet Room - and it was nice if not huge. Bed, bath, etc., were really nice. Room does have TV and wi-fi, but I was "on vacation" and did not use them that much. Mornings I went down, grabbed coffee, and sat out on the 2nd floor balcony reading and enjoying the view of the yard. Weather was great this visit, and this was hard to beat! The public spaces in the inn were plentiful on both 1st and 2nd floors, and I felt very comfortable. Gaslight's location is in the heart of Gettysburg, and everything but the battlefield itself is an easy walk. That included places to eat and get ice cream. I preferred this to being farther out, driving around, finding parking, etc. Hosts - Mike and Jennifer - were great, friendly, answered all questions, and helped with anything I wanted. If you are looking for a 9-room B&B experience with other nice people, want to enjoy the heart of the town of Gettysburg, and do not need a mega-hotel, the Gaslight Inn should be high on your list.

Laura and Ron are the most amazing hosts. They saved a piece of history when they chose to take on this house project and they will proudly tour you around the house explaining what was there before. The dedication and resilience they have is unparalleled. They had a complimentary overview of the battle at cemetery hill with a licensed guide and offered cheese and a glass of wine too! We also participated in a paranormal investigation of the house with all of the other inn guests and it was one of the most fun nights I've ever had in gettysburg. We definitely had a bit of activity but nothing that made any of us feel scared or uncomfortable. As far as location goes, it's absolute perfection. It's right in the middle of everything so whether you want to walk to the square, Mr G's ice cream or the Dobbin House, your walk won't be more than 5-7 min! They are also right on the main drag so if you're attending for a parade you'll have front row seats. There is on site parking in the back, which is huge! The rooms are all adorable and cozy, roomy with beautiful bathrooms and super comfortable beds. VERY clean! The breakfast offered is not only plentiful, but delicious! Everything is made from scratch, served hot and changes daily! If I could give this place 10 stars, I would! If you're questioning staying here over other places, do yourself a favor and book it. Where do I even begin?! Well, sit back, get a cuppa and relax - this is going to take some time!…read moreOctober 1st-October 5th - the weekend of my daughter's long-awaited wedding. We took over. Every room. At first, everyone was "omg - we're all a minimum of 3.5 hours away - WHY!!!" As Mother of the Bride, I had a lot of work on this wedding, and Connie was my first contact here. She made everything perfect from the onset. My husband and I visited about 3 weeks before the big day to lock down decorations with Connie in the amazing barn. She made us feel welcome & was so incredibly helpful. We left with a feeling of control, where before I was just frazzled. I knew she understood my vision for the decorations and would do everything she could to make it happen. The house itself is a magical place with rooms tucked through this door, past the games, to up one of the two staircases, to behind that door off the parlor, to down the stairs through the solarium! Tea and coffee are always available, along with lemonade and water. They offer a variety of teas and coffee pods for all flavor lovers, including decaf. From this room we open to the grand solarium. Completely surrounded by the 2nd-story deck and porch with an outdoor fireplace! Big windows allow for streaming sunlight all day - it sparkles! Tables set here are for the 100% delicious breakfasts Sally whips up in the kitchen! The deck/porch off this room lent itself to the cocktail hour for the rehearsal dinner, where everyone had the most fun petting some of the many cats that live on the property! The stairs leading down from the solarium held two more rooms. Anna's Garden room. The other is Houghtelin Hideaway Room - wow! This was our room. While not technically an "old" part of the house structure, it oozed aged refinement. A large king bed was the highlight with the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept in! I seriously need to know what it was - I peeked under the sheets and did see a foam topper, but that couldn't be the whole secret! A big 1920s oak 'set-back" dresser gave ample room to put our clothes away. smart lamps on either side of the bed lent some modern convenience with USB ports, plugs, and such. A beautiful vanity sat as a use for either a desk or a vanity with a large mirror over. There is also a bench with a large mirror over - plenty of "getting ready" mirrors. A closet with overhead light helped to hold out garments, bags, with hooks set extra high for gowns and such. The other side of the room held a huge leather sofa that you just sink into! Chairs and tables allow this area to be a nice conversation nook. The bathroom was a masterpiece in itself! A huge walk-in stone shower with both a hand-held wall-mounted spray as well as an overhead rain shower head. They also supply shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel in a wall-mounted dispenser. The enormous soaking tub was well used by myself three times! The vanity was well lit with so much room for things underneath with open shelves. A door out of the room at back led to a small patio area with a table and chairs and a path that leads directly to the wedding garden. Everyone there did everything possible to make my daughter's wedding weekend a magical event, and I truly hope we didn't overwhelm them too much! Right to the moment we pulled out on Sunday morning, watching the house fade in the mirrors behinds us - we knew we would be back again and again. This place felt like home. She took care of us as if we were members of her own family. Ann has thought of every possible thing to make our stay an absolute delight. Our beds were comfy and everything we could ever need was right at our fingertips. Ann's breakfasts were delicious and wholesome, and our surroundings were pretty and enjoyable. On the last morning of our visit, I became seriously ill. As she had said we could, we woke Ann at 3 am and she accompanied us through the night to Gettysburg Hospital, where she had been a nurse. She stayed in the ER room with us until the doctors pronounced me well enough to return home - and Ann's home had definitely become ours. Ann is a very special human being who, as she said, "Just loves life!" She lives to serve and she took care of me as if I were my dearest relative. We plan a Christmastime visit to Ann in late December because it will be like going home for the Holidays. She decorates her Victorian-themed home with NINE Christmas trees! We enjoyed a pleasant three-night stay at this historic inn. The location is unbeatable--right on…read morethe town square, with most sites and restaurants an easy walk away. The property itself dates to 1824 and has been converted over time into five "suites." We stayed in the top-floor unit, which was very spacious and included a full kitchen--great for a longer stay and those that want to eat in. The place was spotlessly clean. That said, it's important to set expectations. This is not a modernized property, and some features may not suit everyone. There's no central HVAC; cooling relies on two window units, which took a while to bring the room down to a comfortable temperature on a warm (high 70s) day. The plumbing is functional but a bit inconsistent--expect to let the shower run and occasional temperature swings. Being right on the square comes with some noise, especially at night, with traffic (including trucks) passing through in the wee hours. We also had no Wi-Fi access in our room, and check-in would have been smoother if instructions (including access codes) had been sent in advance. Parking is limited to three spots, so you'll likely need to use the nearby town garage about a block away. One safety note: there were a couple of raised nails in the floorboards, which had been flagged by a previous guest by applying stickers --we reported this upon departure. Overall, we would recommend it for travelers who value location, space, and historic character--but go in knowing this is more "charming and quirky" than "updated and polished."
