There's changing rooms, bathrooms, and showers (haven't tried, not sure if they work), and plenty of lockers (bring a lock). Don't expect shiny squeaky floors. There's a few classes that don't require membership. Their schedule is on their website, as are schedules for other NY recreation centers. Membership - The membership for NY recreation centers applies to all locations in the state and some other locations are probably newer, cleaner, and include pools and such, but this is a relatively humble convenient location if you live nearby. The annual membership is $50 for adults and $25 for seniors, free for under 18. Membership includes all locations. Sign up in person, pay the fee (no cash accepted), take a photo, get your membership card. This center also functions as afterschool for the school it's located within. Fitness center - humble fitness room with some free weights, a few well-used treadmills and ellipticals, a few workable workout machines for legs and arms, and benches for weight training. Very minimal but nice when you come during the off hours (later towards closing). Classes - Walk-in or pre-register. 1) bootcamp with Alexia was intense! There's a series of gym exercises the instructor demonstrates and directs for the students such as lunges, varying difficulties of crunches, deadlifts, squats etc. Great for cardio and quite tough. She means business and is very encouraging. She plays upbeat Latin music during class. 2) yoga with Crystal - 6-7pm Wednesdays until June or July. Open and free to the public since it's a ShapeUp class. Sweet instructor who knows what she's doing and goes over basic yoga poses and flows. 3) plenty more classes like ab/core workouts, exercise with Latin music, open badminton/pickleball/ping pong etc. tl;dr humble, dusty, convenient recreation center catered to afterschool, adult fitness, open gymnasium for certain sports, small fitness center, changing rooms and lockers available. Come without expectation! Get a tour. Membership applies to all the centers. Schedules online.

I've also done several birthday parties here. Planning and set up is all meticulously handled from confirming the date to confirming all details right up until the day. On day, all of the coaches are attentive to all of the kids and work with the parents to make sure everything is on track with food and having cake. Kids have so much fun here and love coming. It is a dream if you're an avid tennis player. They offer various different tennis clinics for both adults & children from May thru October. Claudio Urra, the head pro is a great instructor and really keeps you movin' (and groovin') during the clinics. They are both fun and challenging! The atmosphere here is very laid back and intimate where it seems like they are all an extension of a big family. Members vary in all ages (Oldest member is 90 y.o and he is quite dashing and will probably beat you on the courts!) Added bonus: Traditional "Tennis Whites" are NOT required! In June, they will host NJ State Div 1 Championships which should be a lot of fun. I plan to go watch some great tennis as much as possible.

First of all, their programs for kids to learn and play tennis are FREE. You don't even need to buy a racquet. Second of all, during the warm months, they usually have more than 60 locations all over NYC (depending on the funding), so there is bound to be a location in your neighborhood. Third, they have State-Certified guidance counselors with Masters degrees on staff to help kids in the program to choose the right high school or a college for them, or help students if they have trouble in school, or with filling out all sorts of applications for colleges or scholarships.
