If I could give Crissy more stars, I would. My ex used to get his hair done by Crissy, and he always looked great. He was a stingy, picky bastard who wouldn't let anyone touch his hair with a razor- only scissor cuts. Crissy indulged him, made him look fabulous, and didn't even raise the price because he was such a pain in the ass. He wouldn't let me go to Crissy while we were dating because he told her all his secrets. ;) As soon as we broke up, I called Crissy! I had a neo-mullet as the result of volunteering as a model for a friend who was in cosmetology school. Crissy came up with a game plan, and now my hair is back to fabulous. She's great with color, too. I've done everything from highlights to darkening, and she always knows exactly which color is going to look best with my skin tone. Her prices are UNBELIEVABLE. I can't believe the value you get, the personal friendly service, and the quality of cut for the prices she charges. The icing on the cake is that her salon is dog-friendly. Love it! read more

I forced myself to wait a month to write this review. The hair is still good. I found Crissy on Yelp after looking for someone who could give me a cut and color. I have only dabbled in highlights- and I wanted something to finally cover my gray. I also needed a fresh style. Crissy studied my head of wavy hair, looked at the pictures I brought (mostly of Meg Ryan), and then went to town. She gave me "sparkly chestnut" lowlights and "ashy blond" highlights, she wasn't afraid to chop off my hair for the first visit, and she peppered the conversation with honesty and down-home bar- worthy words. I now have a new look that is professional but not boring -a mod 60's kind of thing- that even the mechanic noticed. I 'm happily not blond ("I knew you didn't want to go a blond as the pictures"). Even better, this working mom was in and out in 2 hours for $90 plus tip! I knew I was hooked when Crissy said," I don't like to do hair for high maintenance chicks." Crissy is the best. And I am crazy obsessive type-A picky about my super-straight relies on a perfect cute to shape it hair. And I am a consoisseur of bob-style cuts, which I have rocked on and off for my whole life. And Crissy makes me happy. Her color is fantastic too. I regularly get asked if I get my hair cut at Vidal Sassoon. And I love revealing that no, it's actually a sassy Berkeley punk rocker who does my hair at a freaking STEAL. No, she's not actuvely taking new clients. But she does occasionally take walk-ins if she has time between appointments. It is worth stalking her a little. Not in a restraining order way though--she definitely wouldn't like that. Crissy is technically excellent at what she does and she is very fun to be held captive by for the length of time she's working on your hair. If you like your perfect hair with a side of dry wit, tastefully stalk Crissy within the boundaries of the law. read more

For those of you who used to go to Avenue Cuts, CRISSY KING is now at this NEW LOCATION, and she is as wonderful as ever! I've been going to Crissy for the last five years. I live in Connecticut now and still fly back to see her (Connecticut hairstylists do not understand Asian hair). Crissy is a genius when it comes to recommending color and layers. Crissy gave me a trim and listened to exactly what I wanted. I had a butcher cut my hair several months ago, and use a razor which on my long blonde locks was fatal, one layer was cut two inches long and it stuck up on top of my head. I found Crissy on yelp. She cleaned up all the wispy ends, we both knew I needed 3 inches off but I wanted to keep my length, she totally heard me and cut it dry so we could see how it looked right away. Crissy is a ridiculously awesome hair stylist. She listens to what I want, and then recommends/does a cut that honors that dream while still keeping in mind the realities of what my hair will do. I've also had her do highlights, and she does great color. She has a very good sense of what tone to go for. My hair is that mousy blond/brown where highlights can go really brassy & awry, but hers look completely natural. Probably the best highlights I've ever gotten, actually. Crissy gives great cuts at really reasonable prices, and I always have total confidence that I will come out of her salon with a great cut & color in the style I want. I've now gone to Crissy twice for haircuts. I have wavy/curly hair, and usually either the cost is prohibitive or the person cutting it really does not understand how to work with curly hair. Both times Crissy has given me fantastic cuts - perfect shape, perfect curl patterns and perfect style - that grows out really nice. She is great, and her worth every penny. She should be teaching all other hair stylists/artists on how to interact with their clients, or just go on to become a celebrity stylist. She really listens and tries to help you with your hair issues. I have had numerous stylists over the decades--even some that have become friends--but never one like Chrissy. I've been going to her for over six years, and remember when her chair was up the avenue in that other salon. The only only issue I have: it would be trying to find someone mediocre to "replace" her, because these crazy escalating prices in Oakland finally force her to leave us. read more

I have been seeing Chrissy for almost 15 years, following her through the last two salons before she started her own business. I have had so many great haircuts from her over the years. I just trust her. I give her a general idea what I need but she really does have a natural instinct and some of the best cuts I have had are when I just let her work her magic. Some on here say she is rude and some say she is not taking new clients. Neither of those things are true. She is just real and takes clients that she works well with. I prefer that over someone that is phony just to win over a customer. read more

Crissy's AMAZING! I've been searching for someone new to do both color and cut for over 2 years now. Crissy spent all of about 2 seconds looking at my hair before she gave me a complete 'play by play' of my last appointment -- what they did, what they probably told me and then why they told me what they told me. It took the last place 3+ hours to burn a chunk of my hair off while trying to make it blond and then give me a bad cut/hustle me out the door. Crissy's been cutting my short hair for three years now and she's the best haircutter I've ever had. She does the whole cut with scissors and then uses the clippers only to clean up my neck. She's the only person who has cut my hair that I trust so much I don't have to do the "looking at the back" review with the mirror before I pay her.
