They messed up my hair, and by they, I mean there was literally two people cutting my hair at the same time. I asked for a trim. One person (Jackie) cutting the right side told me she didn't have her cosmology degree. The left side was cut by (Maryanne) who apparently was trying to teach Jackie how to cut hair. This was not anything I had agreed to. They just sat me down in the chair and started in. They also were pretty boisterous and oddly insulting about my hair. I asked Jackie to stop cutting because I could see how horrid she was at cutting hair, but she wouldn't stop. But once you sit down and people have started cutting, it's not easy to stop them. The left side by Maryanne is okay. Although she cut more off than I asked, and she didn't stick just with a trim because she tried to do damage control for Jackie's mistakes. The right side by Jackie is hideous, with huge chunky layers cut into it. Maryanne, (the experienced hairdresser) admonished Jackie, (the one without a degree), saying to her "remember how good my side looked before I tried to fix your side". I knew some damage had been done but wasn't sure how much, because they styled my hair in a way that covered up the mistake. I was charged 75 dollars and had to tip two separate people on top of that. As I left I was told they could fix any problem, to just to come back. But when I came back the next day and tried to talk with them. Jackie was hostile and said I asked her to cut the right side that way, while Maryanne accused me of making a scene although I didn't even raise my voice. I then was bullied out of the door by a burly mean acting guy. Later that day I received a phone call from Maryanne (the experienced hairdresser who had done the left side). She appeared drunk or to be dealing with mental health issues. I tired to discuss my concerns with her, and she said something like "I'd rather talk about anything else than your hair, can we talk about the war in Syria?" Like seriously? No. Maryanne refused to see the problem with what had happened (they basically used my hair to teach somebody without a degree). To this Maryanne said "But I Love Jackie". And "you don't need a license to cut hair". She refused a refund, even partially. Kept saying she "had to go" but then kept talking. Just to get her off the phone I told her I'd consider having her cut it again in some random point in time, after the much-too- short pieces from Jackie's chop-job grow out. But honestly I am not planning on ever going back there, I don't see how I'd ever trust anybody from that shop near my hair in the future. read more

Sometimes it seems like it's hard to find a men's barber between Super Cuts on one end and the aggressively hipster joint (you know, everyone has a slicked back undercut, lumberjack beard, rolled 501s with boots and suspenders, and the place looks like a turn of the century apothecary) on the other. And then there's Louie! Super personable, excellent, meticulous barber, will cut it how you want in a way that's flattering to your face. If you want an undercut he can do you up, but he's not going to just go with his house style regardless of what you ask for. I've never had such a bad experience with a haircutter, and maybe not with any service professional. She totally ignored my instructions, and disrespected me throughout the haircut. I said I wanted my hair long all around, and ended up with it all chopped off--when I expressed concern about it at the beginning of the haircut, she told me she knew what she was doing, and "it'll grow back." Hairmergency Thursday I am amazed that no other review has pointed out the irony in having a woman named Tresca deal with your, uh, tresses, but here's the scoop-a-loop: In need of an emergency color correction at 3:45 p.m. on a Thursday, Cuttin' Up's digits were dialed and luckily for me, Tresca answered and, despite being last minute, was willing to fit me in and try her best to correct what was, admittedly, a hairtastrophe despite having never met me before and despite it being her birthday (a fact that was later gleaned from the parade of well wishers waving to this lady from the sidewalk). Would I, in her shoes, have agreed to provide a time-and detail-intensive service to someone at the last hour on my birthday? Probably, but that is why Tresca is getting this review. II. Hair Apparent If you have ever decided to redden your locks, you will know that red is 1) always permanent; 2) always a poor choice if you do it yourself or for near-free; and 3) never turns out like you think it might, even though the ladies in US Weekly make it look soooo easy. Tresca is credited with having a 6th sense- H.S.P.- Hair Sensory Perception. She went in the back, mixed a beautiful natural covering shade, and had the genius to match my super-white eyebrows in the same breath, making the dye job not only well executed, but also believable. This was precisely the look I needed to obtain a mere 12 hours before having a major professional opportunity that would have been cheapened by the Orphan Annie stylings of my prior hairstyle. I truly appreciated her approach, which included giving my hair the time it needed, despite "squeezing" me in. She never once mentioned that she was hurried. She is a true professional. III. UDPATE: Tresca has moved to Glama-Rama on Telegraph in Oakland. Find her there! I am pretty particular about my hair but I also don't want anything extravagant or expensive. When I moved back from Chicago last year. I was looking for a place that I could get to easily by BART. I noticed that haircuts in the Bay Area are nearly twice as expensive as in Chicago (ugh). In fact, the other place near Rockridge that I got my hair cut just a few years ago has doubled its prices. Cuttin Up was one of the few places with reasonable prices and good reviews. My experience with Cuttin Up has been fantastic. Tresca cuts my hair, and I get excited to see her every time because of the amazing, thoughtful conversations we get to share. The rest of the staff is friendly and helpful in my interactions with them. I also love the laid back, retro vibe of the interior, and it's a great bonus that it is next to Trader Joe's and Pharmaca, where I can run some errands. As for the haircut itself, I've been more impressed with Tresca than any past stylists of mine. I showed her a few photos of things I liked the first time, and she helped me work out what to do. She's also been able to take into account requests like "make it wedding appropriate," or "job interview appropriate," or "let's have some fun with it," and has never let me down. Again, I'm kind of picky. I have a really strong growth pattern with a cowlick that is hard to cut around, and I always want lots of choppy texture on a short cut with great blending. Tresca delivers. Her attention to detail is great--with previous hair cuts, it has been the norm that I have to touch up a little once I realize there's a bit near my ear that wasn't cut, but that has been the rare exception with Tresca. My last haircut, I actually walked out feeling a little iffy because it was slightly shorter than I had wanted. Hah! It turns out I've gotten more compliments on this haircut than any I can remember. To me, it speaks a lot about the skill of a stylist in delivering a good haircut when a slight miscommunication actually ends up with an even more amazing look. And of course, once I adjusted, I was super happy with the cut as well. Now I'm planning to ask for the same cut at my next appointment. WARNING: This is a long post! Walked in on a whim to get a haircut on a Saturday because I had an interview coming up and I hadn't cut my hair in about 4 months. I was greeted by a stylist that seemed to be unhappy to be there and basically pointed to an empty chair where I was supposed to (apparently) sit. I brought in a picture on my phone of what I wanted. A very simple request really: just longer side bangs at about mid-cheek (already had some grown out layers about an inch longer) and a 1/2" trim for the rest of my hair. She barely acknowledged the photo and decided to get started like she knew what she was doing. My heart sank after the first snip. Instead of the asked 1/2" she took off a huge chunk of hair over 2" long that was now the length of my longest layers. And to make it worse, it wasn't even... as in, the scissors snipped unevenly so there were some longer pieces within the chunk. The second cut was on the other side of my head and was even shorter and NOT even close to matching the length on the other side. I mentioned that "Ummm excuse me? I think you are cutting too much, I just wanted a trim" and she just nodded. Then the bangs. That's when things started to really go downhill fast. The first chop of my bangs was ABOVE my eyebrows (remember: I had requested mid-cheek). My bangs literally stuck straight up into the air as if I were wearing a unicorn horn. At this point, given that my hair was 75% cut with 3 very large chops with her shears, I was at her mercy to finish. Once she was done, she started putting in literally 3-4 styling products to try and slick down the bangs. When I mentioned that I wasn't happy with the result and the bangs were far too short, she had the nerve to state that "if I parted my hair to the other side it would look right" and "it's because I had a cowlick on the left I SHOULD have mentioned first"... Um... what? If I changed my part and warned you about my cowlick you would have gotten it right? She then spent another 10 minutes trying to flat iron the bangs flat but they were so short they would only either go straight up or forward. I was furious and paid the $35 fee for the haircut but no tip since she was just awful. She obviously was not willing to acknowledge any mistakes. Right when I got home, I called and asked to speak to the owner/manager. I spoke to another stylist (Tresca, I think) who stated the owner was out for the day, but she'd be happy to speahk to me. She was actually in the back of the salon with another client while I was there, so she offered to give me a refund if I would come back in and show her what had happened. She also mentioned (and here's the clincher) that the stylist was a JUNIOR STYLIST and it was her responsibility to mention to me that she was still in training (of course she didn't). I walked into the salon with my disastrous haircut and my phone with the photo I had shown the original stylist. She agreed that it was nothing like what I'd asked for and the bangs were nowhere close to the photo example I'd shown her. She offered to try and fix them for me (which I declined because I'd already lost too much hair that day). She did immediately refund my money, which is why I gave an extra star. I was back in the salon literally 15 minutes after I'd fled and the stylist who had cut my hair had apparently already left for the day -- I guess she really was reluctant to cut my hair since she took off IMMEDIATELY afterwards! But the overall experience was pretty traumatizing and I'm not even someone that is particularly picky about haircuts. I've had my fair share of "okay" haircuts in my time but this was by far one of the worst experiences in my many years of hair adventures. I won't be back to this salon, although Tresca was very sweet and clearly far more skilled than the stylist I had the misfortune of being stuck with. read more

In the last half year I've tried several different salons on College Ave. including the two on College between Russell and Ashby. left fairly disappointed with both of them after having paid top dollar for pretty mediocre haircuts, and both of them resulted in hair being cut shorter than what I asked for. Why is that? So many times I've asked for maybe 3/4", they say, "Ok, no problem.", and then start cutting off twice that. Anyway, maybe 4 weeks ago I had gone into another shop, didn't like the cut, lived with it for a while, but enough was enough. I walked b today with no appt., she didn't really have time, but she fit me in. She right away noticed the mistakes my previous visit at another shop had resulted and observed my style as being somewhat of a 'Man Bob' haircut, which was true, and she fixed it and even trimmed my eyebrows which were starting to resemble those of an osprey or other bird of prey. This review is specifically for Tresca at Cuttin' Up, because she's the best colorist I've ever been to, and the only one I trust with my gray hair. I've been dying my gray hair since I was 30 and I was sick of being a slave to the bottle and being embarrassed by the skunk stripe every 5 weeks. Now, having finally met my true love, I've decided to grow my gray out. And I wouldn't do it with anyone but Tresca. Tresca's a highly-trained colorist, and I've always loved what she's done with my color. She has a technique for growing gray out that makes it look intentional and stylish, like Tish in The Addams Family. Now that I'm growing my gray out, people tell me all the time, "I love what you're doing with your hair." Strange women approach me & ask for the name of my colorist. Men even notice (!) I've been to other stylists and tried to get them to do what Tresca does with my color, but they just don't get it. read more

I received the best haircut of my life courtesy of Mary Ann. I asked her to cut my hair in a way that would bring out the waviness of my hair. She did a perfect job and also wasn't afraid to cut my hair shorter in places that would help achieve that goal. She was also really fun to get to know. I've never met a 6th generation Oaklander before. Lastly Mary Ann gave me great recommendations on how to style my hair (don't brush it essentially to let the wave do its thing). My hair responded beautifully and the weeks that followed were glorious. I've never been so happy with my hair because Mary Ann taught me about what my hair needed to do naturally and accentuated that. I'd recommend asking Mary Ann what she thinks would be best to bring out whatever makes your locks special -- she knows her stuff. This has really taught me not to say, "cut 2 inches off" ever again. Mary Ann is a pro -- let her do her thing and your hair will be happy. Hopefully you will be too :). Going back for my second cut today! read more

Great hair salon -- I live in the neighborhood and have come to Maryann back with long, curly hair, and I'm going to her now with short (but still curly :) hair. Her cuts are competent and compelling both, and she knows color (I occasionally get highlights in my dark-blond hair). And on the personal side? I'll never forget that one time when somebody else had colored my hair *yellow*, I went to her all dejectedly, and she gave me anti-brassiness shampoo -- that deeply purple kind -- to put in my hair and take the fake yellow tones out, for free. Maryann rocks! She's been making my son look terrific for years (almost ten, I think) and when I moved back to Oakland from LA, he kept bugging me to go see her. When I finally made an appointment, he advised me: "Mom, Maryann's an ARTIST. She's not your average stylist. Just hold still and let her do her stuff, and I promise you'll like it." I'm glad he warned me: she multitasks her multitasks, chatting with people, overseeing things in the shop, cooing over a cute doggie, all the while laughing and cutting my hair. WIthout the warning, I'd have been twitching, since without my glasses I can't see what she's doing. Well, at the end, my son was right: she's an artist. The hair looked GREAT. It looks a little different every time she does it, but it always looks great. Today she took me on a walk-in, and it is picture-perfect, easy to care for, and I get loads of compliments. Two of my family members go to Maryanne at Cuttin' Up, and finally persuaded me to try. I was very pleased. I went here for an eyebrow wax because The Nail Spa down the street was booked up. $15 seemed a little steep but usually you get what you pay for -- not in this case. I've gotten probably 50 eyebrow waxes in my life (tweezing makes me sneeze!), in cheap nail salons and in high-end spas, and never have i experienced something like this. It seemed like the people in there getting haircuts were having a good time and happy with what they were getting though. But they should probably stop offering facial waxing until they hire someone who knows what she's doing. I had to wait ten minutes for the wax to warm up, which would've been fine if I'd gotten what I paid for. Then a woman with short dark hair led me to the back. She wasn't friendly but that doesn't bother me. I said I wanted it cleaned up and she said I didn't have much to clean up -- something I've never heard before. This made me nervous. I do have a good natural shape but I like it to be neater. I could tell right away she didn't know what she was doing. She was moving in slow motion like she was on quaaludes. Rather than putting the cloth strip on and immediately ripping it off, she let the strips sit there for a while before ripping. this has left a nice red mark where the wax was on both eyes -- she didn't remove the wax or offer aloe either. After 10-15 minutes of this she gave me a mirror. It wasn't what I wanted, but I also didn't want her anywhere near my face again, so I paid, tipped $2 (I'd normally tip $5), and ran home, as I was now late for a meeting. It'd seem upon close investigation in my bathroom that her accomplishments include shortening my eyebrows by removing the outer side, and turning the entire eye area red. she didn't even touch the edges of either eyebrow, just the end and the middle. read more

However I did not get what I want, I asked the lady to cut a bit and she took most of my bangs on the front which took me 3 months to grow. She did a in betweener not short but still not long as I wanted. I just think that if you want a specific hair cut do not come here as they are good hair dresser but they are not good STYLIST, they can only do so much of what they know. I had a very disappointing experience at Cuttin' Up. I do not recall the name of my hairstylist, but she was clueless and unprofessional. She immediately informed me that she just graduated from beauty school. I asked her if she could touch up my roots. I requested that she bring my hair up to the highest level of blond, NOT bleach it. She repeatedly said that my hair was bleached and she would have to bleach it in order to blend the color in correctly. There was no convincing her otherwise. I asked to see a sample of the hair colors available, and she said that she didn't have the correct color. I became frustrated at that point. She offered no alternatives (other than frying my scalp with bleach). Needless to say, I didn't let her destroy my hair. I was simply looking for a decent hairstylist to touch up my roots. I was casually looking for a place on College Ave. to get my haircut, stopped in to a couple of salons to get some prices, but was unhappily greeted or not even looked at all (perhaps I looked like a kid that just got out of school?). None of them gave me an incentive to stay for a cut. I stepped into Cuttin' Up, attracted to the decor in the window, and I was greeted by a stylist with a smile. I asked how much a cut would be but the stylist didn't know (she mentioned she was new?) so she ran to the back to get another stylist to answer my question. While she was back there, I admired the decor. Late 80's with a touch of vintage and punk. There were candies and chocolates casually laid on the counter and plenty of magazines to keep an awaiting friend busy. But enough with the story, here are the details: Stylist: Rebecca Cut: Absolutely happy with my haircut. All I wanted was a trim on my layers, my split ends gone, and to have my bangs back (it had been more than 6 months since my last cut, my hair grows like weeds). She was very meticulous and detail oriented. She asked often at what length I wanted my bangs and never made an assumption (as some salons do). She took a little longer than I'm used to, but absolutely worth the time and patience. $45 and tip, money well spent. I look awesome and I will definitely return again. read more

I have been coming here for over three years and have never had a complaint. All of the ladies are fun, professional, and very skilled. It isn't the cheapest haircut in town, but you get what you pay for. I also love that they have lunch time walk in specials. Its great coming to a business that treats you like a friend and a customer. They even gave me some free product when they chopped me right before my wedding as a gift. They have also saved me when I have had some Supercuts disasters. Serves me right for trying to get a cheap haircut in the first place. I am a total slut when it comes to hair salons. No monogamy for me--I'll see you once, then decide you're not really what I want and keep searching for that elusive perfect stylist that really "gets" me. I have thick, wavy hair that a lot of stylists don't know what to do with--they thin it, they razor it, they make a mess of it. Lately, no one's wanted to cut it short enough--not super-short, just a cute, cheekbone-length angled bob. My hair was an overgrown, shaggy mess when I walked into Cuttin' Up on the spur of the moment. I saw one of their junior stylists--can't remember her name, but she was Greek and used to live in London. Much to my surprise, she gave me EXACTLY what I asked for, worked with the texture of my hair and snipped just the cute, stylish bob I wanted. Love this place! I have had my haircut everywhere and with some truly amazing stylists. Maryanne has an edge that inspires me and motivates me to try new things with unfortunately my last hair stylist didn't so much- hence my branching out. She has character and flavor. Louie just worked on both my boys' hair as well and did a fantastic job! My eldest has lots of hair- long thick and he cut it with style and class. I was in desperate need of a haircut on a Sunday. Marisol was good, but for $35 I think not. I could've gotten a cut at Cinta Aveda in SF for $14, no appointments available when I needed one! The atmosphere was so 80's, and I was covered in a leopard print cape. Oh well, not bad but I felt sooo out of place as a 30 yr. old male. The median age served gas to be about 50.....I will not be going back, if only a pinch. read more
