But when we went about 4:30, there were people at the bar, but most of the tables were groups of older patrons enjoying the fish fry.

Last night was my first visit to Fiddler's Hearth, despite wanting to check this place out ever since I started dating my boyfriend, who lives in South Bend, a year and a half ago! Their regular menu looks sooooo good and their restaurant week menu also looked good! Just a note - only 2 of the items on their restaurant week menu appear on the regular menu, so get these unique dishes while you can these next two weeks! Like I said, I have been wanting to check out this SB institution for ages! Inside is adorable and absolutely maximalist. My minimalist mom would have a heart attack coming in here. So despite it being -5 degrees out, Fiddler's Hearth was packed and we were glad we made reservations. It was the first day they had the special restaurant week so it did take 2 hours for us to get through and finish everything because the kitchen had to make all these new items but I won't fault the restaurant for that in my review today. I am sure it is normally a well-oiled machine. My bf and I both got different things off of the menu but ended up splitting so we could try lots of different Irish foods. We started off sipping in some unique alcoholic drinks. I got the shamrock coffee which had Baileys and mocha. He got the restaurant week special of a pear and allspice old fashioned. His drink was very strong. Mine was delightful and I was a happy camper sipping mine. Round one goes to me for choosing the best drink. The drinks were about $9 for the old fashioned and $7 for the spiked coffee. Next round was our first course, the appetizer. He got the steak pie (a mini version of the Guiness Steak Pie on the normal menu) for the appetizer which was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC and seasoned to perfection with lots of onions. I got the potato and leek colcannon cakes for the appetizer which were very leek heavy on the taste. I liked it but agreed his appetizer was the winner. Next up to the plate were our entrees. He paid $3 additional dollars for their take on a salmon wellington. It came with a side of brussel sprouts and potatoes. I chose to be a fatty and get the patty melt with medium rare prime rib, stone ground mustard, grilled onions, and a side of pretty yummy chips (ie French fries). It was a very wet sandwich haha. I personally think mine was the better one, while my bf thought his was the best. Sometimes, you just need a really wet and juicy sandwich!! Haha! Last but not least was our desserts. He was the winner here but just barely. His bread pudding was a calorie heavy delight, smothered in a white chocolate sauce. Mine was a cute little classic Irish dessert, a cranachan, which was sort of like a trifle. On top was a moist and chewy gingerbread cookie. In total, our bill was a little over $100 for tax and tip. A little expensive, sure, but we had a great time and came home very full! I will be back!

We started with the Poblano and corn cheese dip which was super tasty, especially the homemade pita chips. I got for my entree the bagel and lox which came with a salad as a side. It is a decent, semi-local IPA, but for once, it is one that I prefer out of the can. The restaurant is clean, and large, and we were seated & served pretty quickly for a part of 5. The menu is semi limited...not a lot of anything, but probably something for everyone.Nothing we ordered was super complex . We ordered the fried feta and the arancini for an appetizer. Both were excellent, although of if I had to pick, I would opt for the feta. For entrees, my party ordered a variety of things! I ordered the panini with a side of fries. Portion on the fries quite small but they were seasoned well. The roast beef panini need something a little more to hit the flavor profile...maybe a dab of horseradish? It was good but not great For the $. Would probably opt for a different place next time.

But if you want to take a break, grab a beer and get some good homemade bar grill food, turn off the main drag (in this case, Highway 1) and go a block or two into the business district of Milford, where there is an awesome little bar with an upfront grill (the cleanest I've ever seen) dishing up homemade soup, awesome burgers and pub food, great deep fry, and some kind of daily special -- including a home made desert (we had awesome pumpkin bars but they usually have pie). On weekends they have crazy cheap steak, fish fry, and prime rib specials. You have to put up with the country music channel on the tv...(but on the flip side they have free wifi, so don't bitch). All in all it's clean, cheap, good, and friendly -- so why waste your change on fast food when you can get food fast, homemade good, and with a water back? It's the most pit-stop worthy place on a long empty haul where the only other attraction is an old corn silo with a tree growing inside it -- we call it the "Hannibal Lecter tree" and a big funny billboard for the "Hoopston corn jerkers." If you grew up a corn jerker, you NEED a friendly place like the Hangout. And it was even open on Easter! Hallelujah, brother, pass the fried pickles and corn nuggets!
