I got kicked out for writing a polite e-mail asking if I could, in any way collaborate to communicate to other athletes to wear their face-coverings at all times. I explained that I was being over sensitive due to the fact that a family member died of COVID this week. Tried it via class pass at first. I booked the fundamentals class because I'm not super strong yet. As soon as I walked in, I felt super welcomed. Nelson checked me in and gave me a basic intro/tour. I honestly felt like we were friends lol. I arrived early to my class so I was able to see the other classes in session so it was great to see what I would be able to do in the future. I was so lucky that my first CrossFit class was with coach Fooch. He is extremely nice, helpful, and fun. I was nervous before starting but it all went away once class started. In Fundamentals, the coaches do a lot of talking, but it is to teach you about the workout and your form. So far my classes have not had more than 3 people, and I once came to a class where it was just me with two coaches. You will definitely work hard, but have a lot of fun too! read more

Extremely disappointing gym. Emailed to check out the gym when i first moved to NYC, and cannot describe my experience for the next month as anything short of harassment about joining. At least once a week, sometimes multiple times a week, i received texts or emails from the owner "following up" on my visit with link to sign, despite having informed him I was out of the country for two weeks. Had a bad feeling from that but bought a 10 class pass membership in November of 2023, and looking at the schedule each week, there was at most a single day with a class worthwhile of the $30 price. For anyone serious about getting a good, hard workout in your hour in the gym, avoid this gym. At a glance, the nearby Crossfit SPOT seems to have a better program if you're looking to get a real sweat. I went in and would describe the value to be pretty much nonexistent. No personalized coach attention from any of the three coaches I interacted with - and not due to the class being busy, since i never experienced a class with more than 10 people in it. For people new to crossfit, I would recommend a different gym. Looking at the signup on any given day, most classes seem to have about 4-8 people sign up, which would seem to indicate that I am not the only one questioning the value of this gym's classes. During my most recent attempt to use up this membership which I now very much regret paying for, I hurt my hand within the first 15 minutes and had no option but to leave. I contacted the owner to see if i could get the remainder of my classes refunded, and was denied that opportunity to end this relationship on a positive note. Overall, a very bad experience. Borderline harassment to acquire members but no value or pride in their offering to maintain them. Avoid. read more

Terrible customer service. The gym, without an official notice to customers sneaked in a $10 fine for now show 2 hours before the beginning of the class. This info, to be fair , is on the automated confirmation email that they sent when a class is booked, that nobody reads, exactly because it's automated and therefore presumed to be always the same. But if someone, like myself , is paying already a monthly membership and has to cancel, due to work or other factors, the last minute, gets penalized and charged on the top of have already paid for the class to begin with. It happened to me just yesterday, and when I emailed the gym I got the rudest of the emails from the owner, who practically asked me to leave the gym. Mind you , I canceled via email , one hour and a half before class. An hour later , I got an email telling me that I was charged $10 dollars for no show. Just like that. $10 on the top of my monthly membership. I have been going to that gym for a very long time time. I love the trainers, but their customer service and policies are very questionable. read more

Overall, this is a great gym - not perfect, but scores well on most dimensions. My 4/5 rating is based on 5 months of membership, and breaks down as follows: COACHES - 5/5 The coaches are the best part of this gym. Paolo, Alan, and Catherine are all highly effective (and fun!) coaches. Catherine (my regular weekday morning coach) in particular is a huge stickler for proper form and technique -- in her hands I've made great progress in a short time, and most importantly, I've remained safe and injury-free throughout. I highly recommend training with Catherine, particularly if you're new to CrossFit. FACILITIES - 3.5/5 The gym is sizable well-appointed, BUT the ceilings are low, which means 1) only a few spots where you can do muscle-ups without hitting your head, 2) to get 10 feet on your wall balls, you have to throw the med ball straight up and ricochet off the ceiling, which is awkward, and 3) no climbing ropes or other implements that require more height. Equipment-wise, things get a little unwieldy once the class size gets larger than about 10 people - at that point, you're sometimes running multiple heats in your class. Adding a bonus half point for having showers, even though I don't make use of them. PROGRAMMING - 4/5 I've generally found the programming to be good, but the strict divide between "Beginner" and "Experienced" becomes limiting when you're somewhere in between, or looking to learn a new skill. I've found that I've learned some of the more advanced skills (e.g. handstand push-ups, ring dips) elsewhere, like when I've dropped in to other boxes that have mixed-experienced groups. Adding a point for having TONS of classes and time options, even on Sundays, and offering a range of specialty tracks (Endurance, Oly, Barbell, etc.) VALUE - 5/5 Their monthly, 6-month, and 12-month packages are well priced, particularly if you get them discounted at the conclusion of your Fundamentals sessions. I also appreciate that they offer "Off-Peak" membership for those with more flexible schedules. I did some comparison shopping and found that CrossFit NYC offered the the most economical membership options vs. others in the area. COMMUNITY - 3/5 The downside to a large gym is that it can get somewhat impersonal, as it runs like a machine and classes become a bit rinse-and-repeat. While I've met some great people and members are generally friendly, the community is nothing like a smaller box where everyone knows each other and it's like one big hysterically fun #fitfam. Overall, CrossFit NYC is a great gym that offers good bang for your buck along with excellent coaching! read more

I started my Crossfit journey here so I'm gonna be a little biased. I have never been athletic. Or fit. Or in shape. I used to be very thin but that doesn't count. My friend has been trying to get me to try Crossfit for a while but I always had excuses. I was tired after work. I wasn't a morning person. I didn't want to work out during lunch since I couldn't go back to work looking unpresentable. But really, I just didn't want to look "bulky." You know the stereotypical girls who have more pec muscles than boobs? Whose shoulders are so big that they can't wear strapless dresses? Yes, I was that superficial. And ridiculous. Cause I had I done some research, I would've realized how dumb I was being much longer. I started Crossfit at this box (yes, we call it a box and yes, it is pretentious) about 18 months ago. I took one of the free intro classes from Meaghan and was immediately reassured. She is this tall, leggy actress who was a former gymnast but talked about junk food like a "normal" person. She didn't have veins sticking out of the side of her neck. She was toned and muscular but not in a steroid-y type of way. I took the free intro class and it was fine. Then the next day came. I live on the 4th floor of a walk up. I could barely make it to my bus stop. I seriously was worried about getting off the bus. This lasted for almost four days. During those days of absolute pain and terror, I thought a lot about my physical state. I had been "running" for year--really, I just wanted the medals. I was in the middle of doing the NYRR 9+1 program but only half heartedly. Again, I just wanted the shiny medals! So I decided to commit to Crossfit for a bit. The first few months sucked. A lot. A whole lot. But I made friends very quickly. There are two classes going on at pretty much the same time and I was in the beginners class for a while, learning the movements, improving my technique, and building confidence. Eventually I moved to the experienced classes--not cause I'm amazing (cause I'm not), but because these classes give you more time on the workout and less time learning the technique. Crossfit is not for everyone. Let me be clear about that. I don't really love to workout. In the three years that I was running a lot (I think I completed over 30 races during that period!), I only got the runners high once. In Crossfit, I almost always leave the box on a high. Even if I didn't kick ass at a workout, I can feel more secure, stronger, more confident. Before I finish, let me just talk about the community here. (And I'm biased but the evening classes with Dave are the best!!!) I need accountability. I need consistency. And I need friendship. I love that we have fun activities both in and outside the box. We've celebrated so many birthdays as a group (again, both in and outside the box) and have really built a sense of family. As someone who thrives in an environment of support like this, it is a dream come true. If you're scared about Crossfit, give it a chance. If you're in NYC and a seasoned Crossfitter, drop in! I went to a Saturday class at the UWS location. They offer a class on Saturdays for beginners to try a Crossfit class for free. My first issue was that I am not a beginner, I have been doing Crossfit on and off for the past three years. The class was not meant for me off the bat, but I was looking for a new location as I just moved to NYC. Additionally, the space was crowded which left the beginner group awkwardly displaced near the stairs at the main entrance. The coaches were nice, however, they did not attempt modify a more advanced workout for me even though I had explained that I was familiar with the movements and looking to find a good fit in the city. I spent an hour "learning"squat thrusts, air squats, and sit-ups for a 10 minute metcon. In my experience, coaches will modify WODs to meet the level/needs of the athlete, this was not the case and maybe it was because I was not yet a paying member. Overall, I felt out of place, awkward, and sized up by those around. Customer service is not this crossfit's strong suit which leads me to question the sense of community within Crossfit NYC UWS overall. One of my new colleagues explained that she has been there for two months and expressed there is a lack of community and warmth, but she likes Coach Jose, who was one of the coaches I met during the free class. At the front desk, I discussed options for someone who has already completed the foundational sessions. The guy explained that someone from my previous box would need to send an email to them to "verify" that I was able to do Crossfit. Something about that just bothers me - why not just ask me to perform movements specific to Crossfit rather than make me attempt to contact a previous coach across the country to attempt to contact Crossfit NYC? As far as student memberships go, you can only take classes at off-peak times which I believe was between 9 AM and 5 PM - this doesn't work for someone like me who has an internship 3 days a week at those hours. I don't remember the amount of times allowed per week or the rules regarding times on the weekend and honestly it doesn't matter because I don't care to be a member there. As a beginner perhaps you will have a different experience - try the free class. For the experienced crossfitter, don't waste your time - try a free class elsewhere. read more

Just started crossfit. it's a great workout. this location is underground and hard to find at first, but it's pretty intense. watch which instructor you get though. I went for a 7AM session, and there were 2 elements classes available. One was fully booked and the one I chose had 3 people including me. As the class began, I could see why my class was empty - the instructor was completely unmotivated and didn't seem to care. I was 5 minutes late (my fault), but the instructor refused to teach me any of the warm ups. She said if I didn't know the warm-up moves, I shouldn't of come late. So I just had to watch what others were doing and follow. While I was doing a pull-up, the instructor told me "what the hell are you doing? Is that what you call a pull up? go do something else". my biggest regret is not taking the other elements class. 4 stars for the location because I'm pretty sure the instructor I got is an exception. UPDATE: I tried the midtown location, and had a great workout. The instructor there was attentive and eager to teach us the techniques. Great workout. read more

Cannot recommend this place enough. I started Crossfit in jersey and then moved to Harlem for the last semester of grad school to do my internships. Well it took me about a month of checking out Crossfit gyms around me and then I found this place. Tucked away across a Starbucks and some chic boutiques it's a basement space. I checked out the Crossfit in hell kitchen but they were under renovation and the bathrooms were kinda iffy, Hell's Kitchen space was kind of narrow too. Crossfit NYC has a nice locker room and bathroom area and it was nice to get a shower in there and be off if I didn't have time to get back to my apartment. And the space is an adequate size. It's not huge it got the job done. Now the best part about this location. Is the staff and the coaches. They are just all awesome people that want to see you get those gains, they do everything right and make sure everyone is technically safe. There was always enough equipment to go around or share. They have student discounts which was nice. They also offer food prep programs and personal training session. If you were like me and looking for a good Crossfit spot around the west side area, this is it!! Hoping to return here soon. read more

Horrible customer service. Arrived to first class early to be told that we were going to wait around for 5 mins for more people to arrive and the workout was fine. Went back to class B was 5 minutes late along with 2 other people and was turned away by Instructor Paolo Calicchio because the instructor had gone over the instructions with the 1 person that arrived on time. read more

Newbie perspective... Coaches are great! Alan is so very patient and positive and always there to help, instruct, and praise. For my other classes I've had Jose and Paolo and really like them as well. I didn't think I'd like crossfit, but I find it to be really fun and challenging. I don't like working with trainers, but I do like working with the crossfit coaches. I am not drinking the kool-aid on crossfit as a sport, because I am more serious about another sport, but I really enjoy the workouts as an adjunct. When I have emailed questions, I have always received prompt courteous responses from the staff. The place seems well organized and the workouts are always planned and posted. Maybe that is standard fare for boxes, but I appreciate the ability to plan my other workouts around what I'll be doing in class. read more

When I first moved to the UWS I fell victim to the Equinox trap. After months spent giving both up my arm and leg to pay the crazy fees only to be underwhelmed by the experience, I quit. Then, I sat on my couch for a few months and got fat. One day, I put the brownie down and decided to look for something else. Much to my delight I discovered Crossfit NYC had just opened a new location a couple blocks north of Lincoln Center. So, I sucked up my unfit pride and went. I love this place. Yes, you will pay $199 a month. However, the quality of instruction alone makes it well worth the price. I like to think that I will workout hard on my own. However, I will never work as hard on my own as I will with great coaching and the support of other exercisers. While all the coaches are great, Michael is probably one of my favorites. The community of gym goers here is pretty great too as it really does feel like a community. I know it's easy to be intimidated coming to a "badass" gym like Crossfit if you're questioning your fitness. All I can say is don't worry about it. There are seriously people across the entire fitness spectrum here. You probably will not be the fittest or the least fit despite whatever you might think. That said, it doesn't even matter if you are - you're going to be pushed no matter what and supported just the same. Sadly, it certainly has not been an easy road for this newest location of Crossfit NYC - there is a curmudgeon that resides in the building above who has made it his life's mission to make the poor people that run this gym's lives a veritable hell. He seriously lurks outside to "catch" any misstep (noise, ordinance compliance, etc.). Curmudgeon, if you're reading this, back off. Or, at the very least, put on some gym shorts and give it a fair shake before assuming the worst. read more

I love this place. The coaches are the best - funny, helpful, knowledgeable. After wasted years at Equinox, fitness now makes sense, and makes progress. They cap classes so the coach can give everyone a bit of personal attention and they care about giving you a good workout. nobody judges you for doing the weight you want and you feel motivated to work hard in the class. read more

I would give them a 2 star but I like the instructors. I'm giving them such a low rating because it's not finished yet. 200 dollars a month and no water fountain, no towels, no locker room. Really?? If I didn't live so close id laugh. Only in manhattan you charge 200 a month for a hole in the ground with kettle bells. This gym should be a lot cheaper till they fix it. I joined the UWS crossfit earlier this year and I have really been impressed. I was initially a little afraid. I have always been in shape, but never been a huge gym buff. Some friends also warned me of the 'dangers' of crossfit. I can only speak from my experience, but the coaching has been great. They ensure that you are doing every exercise correctly so you do not injure yourself. If the fear is holding you back, then I recommend giving it a try. Classes at this box during the week are all beginner WOD, which is a great, VERY unintimidating way to start. If you can't do a workout, they give you modifications to your level. The classes are also small enough to get individual attention if you really need help. Every class, the instructor goes over each workout in great detail to make sure everyone is comfortable. They force you to work hard, and they kick your ass here. It also is paying off. I have seen some amazing results, very quickly. My body has never responded like this before. The one downfall is the class schedule. You can not just come when it is convenient and work out on your own. The gym is 100% classes. If the schedules are not convenient for you, then this is not the gym for you. read more

I Dropped in for a morning class, and had an OK workout, but it was definitely programmed towards beginners. And at $25 just to drop in and do some weighted squats and good mornings, it was not worth the money. As a former (mediocre) college athlete, I struggled to find a new exercise program that I was excited about after I graduated in 2011. I missed the team atmosphere and competitiveness, and was totally bored by going to the gym by myself a million hours a week (at least that's what it felt like) and doing 5ks on the rower. The struggle ended when, by chance, I came across a youtube video of crossfit girls doing pullups, which I thought was totally badass. I started Crossfit at the 28th street location of CrossfitNYC in November 2013, but recently have been going to the 67th street location and I absolutely LOVE it. The box is very clean and well organized. Class sizes are pretty small during the day, which helps build community. Equipment and facility aside, the main thing that can make or break a box is the quality of the coaches. I've been to other boxes across the country while traveling for work, and the coaches at CrossfitNYC are by far the best of the bunch. Coaches are very knowledgeable, patient, encouraging, and help scale the workouts appropriately for your abilities without being condescending . A couple of them are pretty easy on the eyes too ;) CrossfitNYC has positively impacted my life in a myriad of ways (the magnitude of which is outside the scope of this review). And while I originally joined crossfit to be able to do pull-ups (which sadly still elude me, but I'm working on it), I've fallen in love with the barbell. The price ($199) may seem steep compared to other local gyms (that do not do Crossfit), but I've definitely found it to be a worthwhile investment in both my mental and physical health. Instead of dreading the daily trek to the gym, I look forward to getting out of bed in the morning to lift heavy and go hard at Crossfit. I've tried to get many friends and coworkers to do free trial classes at CrossfitNYC, which is notable because members do not receive referral fees. Also notable is that every friend that has come to a free trial class at CrossfitNYC and lives in NYC has joined on the spot! The only con is that there are no showers yet. However, this is also sort of a pro, as it means the 8am class isn't too crowded. read more

A beginner like me can feel like I am in a welcoming environment where I'll be pushed out of my comfort zone, but I'll be given the tools and supervision to ensure I won't hurt myself. I loved this gym, before I injured my shoulder and put my membership on hold. The gym was able to waive my hold fee for the first two months of my recovery. However, after the third month, the gym seemed to get impatient with my recovery and then started asking for me to pay for a hold fee, even though I had sent legitimate doctors notes stating that I was still unable to return to the gym. I understand that there is a policy to charge for holding a membership, but if someone is legitimately injured, I think the policy should be re-evaluated and customized for the specific person and their injury. In my case, I felt that it was unfair for the gym to charge me when I had a legitimate injury and could not return to the gym. The hold fee is also ridiculously high, at $2 a day you're looking at $60 a month to NOT go to the gym. I especially didn't like Hari's (the owner's) tone when I tried to ask for another extension while I was recovering. Good gyms should be more sensitive to injuries, but I guess CrossFit NYC is not one of them. read more

For the past couple of years I have wanted to join a crossfit gym but have always backed out last minute. Finally, I gave it a chance and 5 months later I could not be happier I joined Crossfit NYC. Catherine has been my coach for the majority of this time and has not only helped me get into shape but also has taught me how to perform the movements correctly so I don't hurt myself while keeping me motivated to keep coming back. She is very knowledgeable and will take the time to give you tips before or after class. To all those who are unsure about joining, know I came into class extremely out of shape. While I am still not where I would like to be I am down 30 pounds and am able to do most of the exercises. I joined to change up my workout because i wasn't losing weight or making progress on my own. I was worried i would feel intimidated by the veterans, but this was and is the best experience i have ever had at a gym. The instructors are great and really take time to teach you the proper technique. You can scale any workout to your fitness level. I've managed to do things here i never thought i could. I love this place. I have never done crossfit before however I decided to give it a shot since my weight has plateau and I figured trying something new would help. The coaches her are so uplifting and they really are helpful. My two faves: Alan and Stacy....They really encourage me, even when I feel like I've been defeated they still cheer me on and hep me. **Update - showers are finally here - whohoooo!!** Crossfit is to exercise what San Francisco sourdough slathered with French butter and sprinkled with grey sea salt is to good food; both are as bare-bones and basic as it gets (and yet shockingly expensive!), both are so incredibly enjoyable they'll send wild hoards of endorphins rushing through the prairies of your brain, and once you've tried either, you'll wonder where they've been all your life. I'm hardly a star athlete - I've always struggled with my weight (see the metaphor above if you're wondering why), I've never been a great sportsman, and I used to hate exercise. Not any more. Crossfit NYC is outstanding in the way it manages to make aspects of sports usually reserved for teams or competitive athletes accessible to everyone - in particular, the complete absence of mollycoddling, the community aspect, the competitiveness, the intensity. Crossfit will give you the tools to achieve your goals (however lofty or modest), and a bunch of people to cheer you on as you move towards them. You will be working out next to people far fitter and far less fit than you, with the assurance that you are all working as hard as you possibly can - and that feels awesome! More specifically about this location: The good - Unparalleled coaching; sure, the coaches here are fit as hell and top-notch motivators, but I was expecting that. What truly exceeded my expectations was the personal touch - they remember my name, and they seem truly committed to helping me become the best athlete I can be. Worthy of particular mention are two coaches whose classes I go to most often - Michael (who is truly exceptional in his ability to structure a class and my favorite coach ever, but who I should also note is ugly and smells in case he reads this ;-) and Peter who manages to get me to spend an hour of my Sunday in the gym in every week. - Flexible scheduling; classes are available literally *all the time*. Useful given my irregular schedule. - Small class size; especially if you go to the 10am or noon classes. - Low price; don't laugh - it really is the cheapest I could find in NYC! - Excellent website; they clearly put a lot of effort into ensuring workouts are posted punctually a day in advance, together with entertaining and (sometimes) useful links. The maybe good/maybe bad depending on who you are - Crossfit only; this box *only* programs crossfit classes. This leads to great focus and class availability, but I feel some mobility/stretching or even (gasp) yoga classes would be helpful to round out my fitness program. The coaches are helpful in providing mobility advice, but it's not quite the same. You may agree with me, or you may love the focus. The bad - Lack of showers; (at the UWS location). This would be a deal-breaker for me, but they promised we'd have showers by September. This is the *single* reason I've taken off a star; the second the showers become functional, I'll alter the review. read more

I was extremely happy when CrossFit NYC opened an UWS location. It is far more convenient than heading down to 28th Street and you get the same quality coaching and equipment. CrossFit gets a bad rap from certain groups, but I can definitely say that CrossFit NYC lets you work out at your current level, modifying for strength, injury, whatever, while still challenging you and giving you a butt kicking workout. UWS has a brand new A/C system and construction is ongoing to make it even better. 5 stars will come when they update the bathrooms and add showers (which is in the plan). If you have ever thought about giving CrossFit a try, I highly recommend starting at NYC Black Box. With the multiple locations (your membership gives you access to all their gyms) it is convenient and you get the same programming no matter which location you choose. read more

They are focused on making sure we see our accomplishments and progress even when it seems so small, as small as just getting there and doing the workout! Great atmosphere, great people of all shapes, sizes and levels of fitness, great workouts, very knowledgeable and laid back coaches. I love attending classes here. I won't review Crossfit itself as a discipline. However, in the interests of providing a review that might prove helpful to a would-be attendee, I should point out that the upper west side box is a bit restricted in terms of space and ceiling height. This will earn 5 Stars once they finish construction. I won a membership here by being the high bidder in an auction. I was more than a little intimidated by the idea of Cross Fit since I am much older than most (maybe all) of the other members but I wanted to give it a try. I love it and am becoming addicted. It's a great workout with great trainers who push you but in an intelligent way. The other members are supportive and helpful and the overall environment is one of mutual support. I signed up for the 7am class today and checked the WOD before I left. When I saw box jumps, I told my husband I didn't know what I'd be doing since I absolutely cannot do box jumps. Michael was the trainer and was extremely reassuring and helpful. Well guess what -- I CAN do box jumps. OK, not very high but it's a start. I've had a similar experience with all the trainers there - throughout the Elements classes and in the daily workouts I've participated in thus far. read more
