One of the saddest days I experienced recently was saying goodbye to my coaches, friends, sweaty workout partners, newcomers etc at CrossFit WallStreet. This gym did two amazing things for me. It kept me fit and healthy and happy and it introduced me to some of my closest friends in New York. It was indeed with a heavy heart I departed (for work purposes) to Switzerland. I've found a box CrossFit Kreis9, but as good as it is it doesn't come close to CFWS. Let me tell you why: First off like most things in this world its the people that make things awesome. And CFWS has lots of amazing people. Both current and former coaches are all amazing people. Sarah, Lola, Natalie, Keith, Somerton, Chris, Libby the list goes on and on. The people in the class kick ass too. They challenge you and support you as you lift heavier, row faster, kip better and of course look sexier!! The classes are the perfect size, the equipment is great and the workouts are so well planned and organised. I miss this gym every day and I especially miss all the wonderful people I met in the gym every day. They are my family and will remain my family no matter the distance. I can't wait to come back and drop in and workout with them again. To finish up, if you want to give CrossFit a go, you will not be disappointed by CFWS and you shouldn't be scared about giving CrossFit a try when you come to CFWS. What's behind everything that makes this box great is that the owner, Keith, is anything but complacent and actually gives a sh*t about his clients, his box, and his business with how clean the facility is, the great shape of the gear (all of the equipment is regularly & professionally serviced), and his attention to detail during workouts. But he's not the only one; the other coaches I regularly see - Libby, Rebecca, and Daniel - all bring individual style to their classes, but share a common amount of effort, patience, attention, and professionalism. The programming is challenging, but Keith and the others have been very good at squeezing every last bit of effort out of me without driving me into the wall. The community has been a big part of why I've quickly settled in here - have yet to meet any meatheads or a**holes - and everybody has been really friendly and welcoming. I've been coming for 4-5 months to the 5am class, and looking forward to seeing the friends I've made gives me a push to get out of bed and go on days when I'd rather just sleep. And that's important because sometimes a workout won't go exactly as I'd hoped, but I'm always happy in the end that I got up and went and challenged myself. I've been training here for the better part of a year and it's changed my perspective on fitness. On top of all of this, the workouts never get monotonous. You'll never stop learning new movements and find yourself getting a little better every day at old ones. Having visited a number box's in the city, I must say that CFWS has not only met, but exceeded my expectations. I wasn't sure if CrossFit was for me, but after completing the foundations course, I knew this was the sport for me. For anyone who feels hesitant about CF, trust, that it is for everyone. The coaches (Keith, Libby, Chris, & Somerton) are absolutely amazing! The community/culture they've created is diverse and athletes athletic abilities range (there's always someone you can relate to or someone you aspire to be like). I joined CrossFit Wall Street 3 weeks ago. And i have nothing bad to say about this box. I am a personal trainer, someone who is technically already physically fit and every class i feel like i am being pushed to the next level. Not only that but every class is extremely educational. We don't just do workout we learn why we doing it. What the purpose of it is and how it will benefit the body in the process. Absolutely would recommend it. I joined CrossFit Wall Street a month ago and was immediately welcomed into the gym. The coaching has been excellent -- each coach has customized workouts to my ability, but also pushed me past where I thought my own limits were. The classes are very small and have given me a sense of community that I haven't found in other gyms in the area. I have done crossfit before for about 3 years then took a year break. Found this gem which is conveniently located close to work. The Box is very clean - which offers stand alone showers (body wash, shampoo, conditioner, towels & lockers that you can rent for $25/mo). The class size is max'd at 8 per class which is a perfect class size. All Coaches Keith, Libby, Sommerton & Chris are extremely knowledgeable, very experienced and fun! They pay close attention to movements & WODs and there to correct your form and push to the next level. I've had so many friends hop onto the xfit bandwagon and I'm happy to say I have as well! Joined up with Crossfit WS as my main box. I was happy to learn the basics from Paul and I was glad to see that he cared to ensure that his gym members knew what correct form was before handing them over to a real barbell. The class sizes are nice and small and you truly do get to know people that join up. I'll admit that the freebie trial class is a bit salesy, but that's to be expected. I really love going to CrossFit wall street. I've been going for about a year and it's definitely the best box I've ever been to. All of the coaches have their own style, so when you come consistently you really benefit from having different people helping you with your weaknesses. I went from being stuck with a lot of movements to PR'ing my movements every few weeks. I love the smaller class sizes because it allows you to really get to know the coaches and the people in your class if you have a preferred time that you go to consistently. Though the classes are small, I've never had trouble getting to go to the time that I wanted. I've been to bigger gyms with the same amount of people where everyone felt more on top of each other at CFWS. Since it's a small space, everyone knows to be respectful of the people around them and to not throw things around wildly. I drop into other gyms when I travel, but even if they're bigger or fancier they never feel as welcoming as when I come back to CFWS. read more

For years, I have been doing strength classes at great gyms in the city and cardio at soul cycle, but I felt like I was plateauing and I was looking for an additional workout program. I was skeptical of CrossFit in general - due to many friends that have been injured. But, CFWS is a breed apart. Classes are maxed at 8 per instructor. They take their time and insure that you are doing the technique correclty for your skill level. The classes are always challenging and always leave you with a smile on your face. I recently started CrossFit Wall Street (having never done CrossFit before). I was concerned before doing CrossFit as I read a lot of general negative reviews of CrossFit that coaches tend to be focused solely on pushing you hard, don't know how to correct poor form, and are of general low quality. While I can't speak to anyone else's experiences at other CrossFit gyms, I can tell you from my experience, the coaches here are very high caliber. One complaint might be that the gym is too small and sometimes you're stepping over people, but I think it's actually a blessing in disguise as it forces classes to be no more than 8 people, so you get more personal attention. The coaches are very focused on constantly giving suggestions to tweak your form, and while you'll be pushed hard, they are very long term goal oriented and will slow you down to make sure you're getting proper form. This was my biggest concern with joining a CrossFit gym, but from my experience, this CrossFit Wall Street is top notch in this respect. read more

I went to CrossFit Wall Street for about six weeks, during which time I spent $790 ($265 of which was refunded), injured myself in three places, and then was kicked out of the gym via email for having a "bad attitude," which, from my perspective, involved my holding back on certain movements and workouts when I was worried I might seriously injure myself. I am a 34 year old woman in pretty good shape for a regular person, which means terrible shape for a Crossfitter. In Jan 2013, I went to a free beginner's class with Keith, one of the two coaches. I didn't particularly like being told to put my whole front down on a dirty gym floor, but I get it, we're going to be hardcore. I signed up for Foundations (3-4 sessions of basics). At the end of our workout, the other coach, Paul, shouted something about how we weren't really working out, because there wasn't any "sweat on the floor." After Foundations, I joined regular classes. Keith said you needed to come three times a week, maybe four, to see results. I came four times a week for about three weeks. I now realize that recommending this to beginners is potentially very dangerous. Classes with Keith were okay, except for when I ended up hurting myself. There was also a theme week called "The Nasty Girls of Crossfit." To Keith's credit, he said he's not sure why they're called girls, since they're accomplished adult women. But, of course, calling something "Nasty Girls" just opens it up for all kinds of offhand jokes ("I like nasty girls, heh heh," etc.) Paul was not encouraging to me at all. His tone was often mocking. But I kept coming and working hard. I started getting injuries. I bought this kind of elastic brace for my elbow. My shoulder started to do weird stuff. One day, I did 250 squats (bodyweight only), where they put a medicine ball under you and your butt is supposed to touch the ball. After, my hip joint was on fire. I really hadn't expected to feel that until I was maybe 70 years old (Oy vey, my hip!) But they really police you to make sure you go down far enough on your squats, so if you're like, "Oh, that hurts, maybe I won't go down quite as far," you get a "Get your butt down on that ball!" I made an appointment with a physical therapist to look at, now, the elbow, the shoulder, and the hip. I figured I'd take a few days off Crossfit, see what the physical therapist says, then get back into it. I went to one more workout, on Friday March 1. We would be running outdoors and then squatting. My quads were still shot from the squatting we had done earlier in the week. We did some warmup sets, and I'm thinking, "Wow, just these warmup sets are kind of a lot. I'd better conserve my strength." I sat one out. This made Paul angry. He refused to acknowledge me for the rest of the workout. The next day, I get an email saying they've terminated my membership and refunded my last payment. Whoa. And: mortifying! I was in the neighborhood, so I walked over and asked why they kicked me out. Keith refused to tell me, but set up a meeting with Paul for Monday. When I arrived at the "meeting", Paul just gave me a blank staredown and didn't say anything. So, they made me stand in the doorway and ask them questions. Paul said he didn't like my attitude (ironic!) I told him that I was frequently being asked to do things that were not possible for me or that were injuring me. I asked, "Don't you think it's reasonable for an adult to decide what to do with their own body, and to adapt whatever's going on to avoid getting hurt?" Answer: That's "not how we do it." So, wow. I thought people only got kicked out of gyms for threatening others or serious offenses. They kicked me out because it's more important that I obey Paul than take care of my own body so I don't get hurt? Really? I was also accused of "giving dirty looks," which I'm pretty sure is just the face I make when I'm trying to visualize and steel myself for doing a complicated multi-step lift. What kind of business kicks you out because of your facial expressions? My final crime was that I "complained about running." Considering that it's been about 30 degrees out, it seems likely that I did indeed complain about running outdoors (and did it anyway, just like everybody else). But, LOTS of dudes complain about the workout ("Oh man, more squats!"), almost as a way of building camaraderie by acknowledging that we are all about to do something hard. I'm pretty sure the last guy who said, "Oh man, this is gonna suck!" didn't get kicked out. Finally, you know what really sucks? When you do an intense workout program, you're letting people see you at your worst. There you are, sweaty and panting and in pain and trying to get those last few reps in and failing again and grunting and finally crumpling with exertion. So getting kicked out and told off by a coach after that is really having someone kick you when you're down. read more

I've been attending classes at crossfit Wall Street for four months now and highly recommend it for anyone looking to change their lifestyle and get in shape. I think that it is wise to enter crossfit with the correct mindset, the idea is to find out where your physical limit is, and work past it. This provides an incredible experience and the atmosphere at Wall Street is very supportive as you push beyond your limitations. Paul and Keith provide a great program that will keep you on your toes and your body guessing. Expect them to try to help you reach your limits similar to any athletic coach would, telling you to push more or try harder is just the way the support system is in crossfit. It is true that pushing yourself this hard opens the door to injuries, that's why the coaches stress form above all else. I've heard Paul say countless times "take weight off and do it right". Be careful and listen to these guys, you'll love the results and find some great friends in the process. read more

I've been to a number of Crossfit boxes/gyms and this one is fantastic. This was my home gym for a year until I had to move out of the city. The personal attention from the two owners (Paul and Keith) is great as are all of the other members of the gym. I was very skeptical coming into CrossFit at first. I had been working with a personal trainer for years and loved the one on one attention but hated the cost. I was welcomed into the CFWS family with open arms. The coaches are amazing - super supportive, helpful, encouraging and truly let you work at your own pace without feeling uncomfortable. The small classes give the same benefits as personal training at a fraction of the cost. I have been a member for 1.5 years and am in the best shape of my life. Unfortunately I had to cut my training short due to back issues but I fully recommend this place to anyone who can manage to get in there. Classes are small enough that the coaches can really help you work on your own individual issues. I have trained at several CrossFit "boxes" in NYC over the past 5 years, but CrossFit Wall Street is definitely my favorite. The small class size (they limit class size to 8 people maximum) is a huge value add, as it allows the coaches to ensure everyone is doing all of the movements properly and safely. I have only been going for about 3 months, but the program has been excellent thus far, and I am definitely seeing/feeling positive results. The coaching staff is fabulous, and it is apparent that they actually care about each member's progress. I would recommend CrossFit WS to both beginners and experienced CF athletes.
