They are striving to open a transitional facility that will give victims and survivors housing, counseling, therapy, education, financial aid, healthcare, and childcare. Rufs is located in the St. Lucie plaza. While this plaza has seen better days, don't let the shabby exterior deter you from visiting this gem of a thrift store. Inside is a boutique like interior with tons of clothes, accessories, small appliances, and household goods. Prices are deeply discounted and everything is attractively arranged. If you have a young lady in your life in need of a formal dress for prom or homecoming, this is the place to go. Gowns which still had their hundreds of dollars price tags were marked down to $50. Another item that caught my eye was a the perfect pair of high heels for Halloween. The couple who were working the store were friendly and sweet. Come out and support this great organization while updating your wardrobe and saving money all at the same time.

The Salvation Army has churches throughout the world called Salvation Army corps but they are probably best known for their thrift stores. When items are purchased at the stores, the money supports the Salvation Army's emergency relief efforts and programs. All sales directly fund local programs and services in Indian River County. Unlike a lot of businesses, the Salvation Army will hire ex felons. Some of the shops support the Adult Rehabilitation Centers which help people combat addiction. When you donate to or buy from the Salvation Army you are helping to support many worthwhile programs. I discovered this Salvation Army store while driving down Oslo Road in Vero Beach. It is located next to a Goodwill for even more thrifting fun. This was one of the nicer Salvation Army thrift stores that I have been in. Everything was clean and neatly organized. Inventory included like new home goods, art, furniture, records, linens, books, toys, and a large selection of clothing and accessories. Thrifting helps people save money while keeping items out of the landfill. The Salvation Army welcomes donations of clean and gently used clothing, furniture, automobiles, household goods, and appliances. Whether you're on the hunt for vintage treasures, everyday essentials, or just browsing for a good deal, there's something for everyone at the Salvation Army Family Thrift Store in Vero Beach.

The staff is extremely friendly and will negotiate on prices if there is something you want, but maybe feel is priced just a little too high or out of your price range. Just ask if they can work with you on price. Clothing is tagged with plastic strips on the collar that indicates pricing. Purple tags are $2 and Red tags are $5. They do have a dressing room for try on. You can find some nice clothes in the mix, however they are not sorted by size, and you have to make a commitment to browse through it all. There is more women's clothing than men's or children's. Clothing is located in the front part of the store along with purses, tote bags, a small selection of shoes, jewelry, DVD's/CD's, health care items, and some collectables and vintage items under glass. In the back portion of the store are children's toys, games, & books, pet supplies, figurines, glassware, dishes, household & kitchen items, arts/crafts items, general books, artwork, tools and hardware, small kitchen appliances, holiday items, and limited travel accessories. There is little to no furniture at this store. You may find small end tables or lamps, but no large furniture items. They have recently been working to re-organize their shelves and displays to put more similar items together. Makes browsing much easier. When you arrive, they have a chalk sign posted inside the door entrance that indicates any specials and discounts they are offering. Like any thrift store, it's "hit or miss" depending on what you are shopping for, but there are definitely treasures to be found!

Their name comes from the bible verse Matthew 17:20, Jesus said, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." The Mustard Seed Ministries mission is "to coordinate the energies of the Christian churches of St. Lucie County to meet the spiritual and material needs of the whole person and to make referrals to all available relief agencies in our community to take care of those in need". According to their website their "services include assistance with food insecurities, past due utilities, rent/mortgage payments, furniture, transportation/travel, emergency shelter, prescriptions, medical equipment, clothing, gasoline, medical care vouchers and many case-by-case interventions. As part of our food program, we implement a summer food program for school children who receive free/reduced meals during the school year; operate a Community Bucket Garden and an annual Community Thanksgiving Feast." For more than 3o years the Mustard Seed Ministries has been using a grass roots model to meet the needs of the community holistically. They are supported by hundreds of volunteers and community members who administer 17 programs and services available to individuals and families in St. Lucie County. They also operate a food pantry at their thrift store and provide medical education. Proceeds from this thrift store and the one in Ft. Pierce raise funds for their programs. The thrift store receives donations from businesses and the local community. They sell art, small appliances, clothes, furniture, accessories, and household goods. They sell a varied selection of items and prices are inexpensive. Strangest item found here this trip, a very serious portrait of Fred J Ball. Who was Fred and how did he end up here? I have so many questions but he is keeping watch on the store. So many cool treasures here. You can donate and shop in confidence knowing you are supporting one of the worthiest charities in St. Lucie County.
